  1. She said, "A what?" Sounds more like she didn't know what it was, but I can't tell for sure. If she did know what it was, I am sure she react as you described.
  2. I just read that and ended up skimming through the last scenes. It did sort of fall apart for me. I liked it for the most part, except that the narrator named every street, every business. He never just went home; he always named the neighborhood or street. Because I live near Boston, it became obvious he Googled to make it seem authentic (the main character talked about leaving a bookstore and going two door down to a cafe that is actually inside the bookstore, and is only a counter and a couple of tables, so you cannot go to the back...er, yes, I go there often). I am usually pretty forgiving about that kind of thing, especially if it serves the narrative, but it was distracting even before the silly, pointless errors. But he could never just walk into a cafe or restaurant. They all had to be named. I'm just starting Return to Oakpine by Ron Carlson. I've loved everything I've read by him, but I'll probably need something light and breezy after it.
  3. Reading a few updates this morning. More evidence seized: Hope there's something incriminating, but knowing Durst, there won't be. I'm reading "A review of the many Robert Dursts – a web of aliases, addresses, PO boxes and private companies – reveals clues left long after the murder of Susan Berman" from The Guardian. Too much to bullet point, but I'll quote one tidbit: The Guardian's investigator speculates it might have been to get around airport security.
  4. I recognized (and I can't quite believe I did) Julie's neighbor Annie from the movie Mean Girls, where she played the crying girl (who had a lot of feelings).
  5. I wouldn't read into that. I've watched every episode of The Writers' Room, and there is usually only one actor from whatever show they're featuring. I think once or twice, there were two. For Dexter, Michael C. Hall was the only cast member to appear. For Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston was the only actor. American Horror Story, Lily Rabe. Parks and Rec, Amy Poehler. Etc.
  6. Season 2 trailer here. Other shows are featured, too, but the link goes directly to the few seconds dedicated to The Returned. If you watch the whole thing, there's nudity in the clips for one of the other shows.
  7. This is embarrassing to admit, but I made myself a cheat sheet for episodes, in an effort to see them all (I have a terrible memory). I looked up how many episodes for each series on Wikipedia and wrote it out, so I can check them off as I watch. I'm even going to try to find all the extras. I also check back for the missing episodes, and I found a couple that were briefly back up. As I am working my way through old seasons of GBBO, I decided to give The Great British Sewing Bee a go. It's delightful as well, but just now as I was watching an episode featuring corsets with boning, I found myself imaging all the bawdy puns that Mel and Sue would be making. I love them. They didn't even have to grow on me. Then it's on to series 2 of GBBO!
  8. I know they played "Got to Give it Up" by Marvin Gaye near the end, but I can't swear it was during the (wonderful) kiss.
  9. The Atlantic has an article that describes our beloved show as "a teeming hotbed of smut" and "delightful." I learned from it that CBS is to blame for the US not getting any earlier seasons. Proceed with caution, because there may be spoilers ahead (there's at least one photo that might give something away).
  10. This episode really made me want an alternate universe version (which would need a different title) in which Harry doesn't get there in time and one of the other kids, probably Rocco, takes a bat hit to the head. I'm still in. I feel like I know a few of these people in real life, so maybe that's humanizing them a little, and/or the acting is good enough to do that. I thought Quinto's resigned "I know" to the basketball coach was a nice moment, not overplayed. I'll watch to the end, I am sure.
  11. I'm power-watching in reverse series order, so I am almost to the series 4 finale. And I still like everyone. It's amazing to be so invested in the show, to practically hold my breath through judging, but not actively root for someone to win or go home. I might have favorites, but I want everyone to do well and only ever want someone to go home because they aren't at the level of everyone else. It's never "get off my TV screen." Watching on YouTube is frustrating, though. There are weird gaps. For series 4, I have found every episode by two (2, 9) on the GBBO channel, and can't find those two anywhere. Really, I would pay to watch them all if they were available in the US.
  12. Four seasons is a great concept. But four days? The show is damn lucky all three designers did as well as they did, (better than I expected in so short a time) but with a little more time it could have been amazing. I remember being excited about a few pieces for each collectoin during the finale runway shows, but now I watch and think, "Not bad for for so little time." I don't expect to get my socks knocked off and I don't. I love every single one of you who posted about Helen being out in the live thread. I was behind and hoping to spoil myself. Thank you! I could watch in peace. I've been pulling for Sonjia all season, but I thought Dmitry was the clear winner.
  13. I have all the Trixie Beldens (including the terrible, awful but valuable later ones), some of them are the old hardcovers. I adored them. Have some of my old Nancy Drews, too. Just now reading Best American Short Stories 2014.
  14. Aw, I always had a soft soft for Vinson. He felt genuine. Thanks for the info.
  15. I like the Kordale and Kaleb commercial because of the backstory. Because I can't stand jewelry store ads, this Dairy Queen commercial cracked me up. Short but sweet (no pun intended).
  16. I liked their Facebook page. They're promoting their Comic Relief competition, so I've been getting a lot of adorable pictures in my feed (Mary can rock a clown nose, almost as well as Sue). Today's update (warning: puns ahead): LET'S GET BREADY TO CRUMBLE! I may have to unlike the page, as I want to see this NOW and I know I might not get to for a long time, if ever.
  17. I felt a little dirty when they showed Helen's red Grammy dress last night, because when I saw it that night, I had no idea designed it and I thought Mary Lambert looked gorgeous in it (and I don't remember noticing any fit issues). Mary Lambert is featured on Macklemore's "Same Love," and she sang it that night with Macklemore, and later Madonna, as Queen Latifah married 33 couples and I cried like a baby but not....segue...as hard as Helen did last night. I feel dirty again, because I did feel for her when she had to tear up someone else's garments. I can't stand her, but it must actually be difficult to destroy a garment someone you'd been going through the competition with created, when you may have talked with them about in the workroom, might have seen their enthusiasm and pride. I dunno. I get it if it was real. But still, I hate that she got in. Michelle's black dress was so much better (damning with faint praise).
  18. Yep, I already know I won't get to know the kids. Duff and Valerie have pleasant personalities and are at least enthusiastic. I'll watch again. I'll watch almost any cooking/baking show. It's a problem.

    Book News

Half my Facebook feed is about the new Harper Lee book. One article that just started popping up (and I don't want to be a downer; I just wanted to share it in case people are interested and some of this is in the article Sharpie66 linked to) is this: Be Suspicious of the New Harper Lee Novel.
  20. Yep, the different hair did all the work. If they're going to sell Katrina as full-on evil, they're going to have to give Katia Winter some kind of Medusa wig with hissing snakes.
  21. Thank you both! I wasn't sure if that was legit. I will be watching and watching and watching. Good thing I need to gain weight because power-watching this show could be dangerous.
  22. I saw some, but when I say "legally," I mean I want to make sure they're not episodes loaded onto YouTube by some random person. I know the account reads something official-looking, but I wasn't sure if it actually is. I was trying to go through a channel I knew was approved of by the BBC.
  23. I want to see the four previous series, but legally, so they see how much interest there is. I love this show. I'd even buy it, but I can't find a way.
  24. Ugh, disappointing. I was only half (quarter?) watching, but did the bride get choked up during the wedding? I'd assumed it was just a fake for the show, despite Alyssa's ordination, but wasn't expecting that. But, well, good for her, I guess, if it made her happy. I had a small but elegant wedding, so I had one attendant, my sister as maid of honor. I let her pick anything she wanted for her dress (she chose well) and when my mother asked if she could wear pants, I said, "Oh, cool, I want you to be comfortable." (She was stunning in her pants outfit; the most stylish person there). My mother-in-law was scandalized when I wouldn't tell her what color to wear, because she said my pictures would look terrible if we weren't all coordinated (they do not). So, at least, there wasn't the too-matchy factor I dislike in the wedding last night. But, geez, nothing was pretty. I thought the color choices the bride favored could have led to some beautiful dresses, and with more time, imo, we would have seem some.
