  1. It's possible Celeste pawned some jewelry, maybe sold a few pair of shoes on eBay. http://giphy.com/gifs/3oKIPDl6WDHI7u4yxq/fullscreen the second time Renata comes at her, Jane's hand goes to the area of Renata's head, though we don't see the contact. Notice that it IS Renata, not Jane, who was aggressive, while Jane took an active defense. Unless it's on school cameras, though, it's they say/she says.
  2. Just for kicks. http://gph.is/2mHsD9v
  3. Oh jeez, I am old. It was a huge hit way back in the Motown era.
  4. Because the song is from the POV of a single-parent child asking their mother where the hell daddy went?
  5. I think we'll see the pivot next week. The previews showed
  6. Green puke was awesome and unexpected. Shrimp? What could have been that electric green sauce? Dead straight Perry controlling opening night, at least he paid for it. Celeste gets a pad! Go, girl. I liked the Jane and Renata scenes. Especially Renata getting her eye poked out, heehee. I was surprised at how easily she made peace, though, so perhaps that was due to what we saw coming in the previews for next week. ie, giving Jane a false sense of security. Poor Ed. Poor poor Ed. Green puke aside, I thought the dinner went well.
  7. Great for TV, but I can't think of a more huge literary debacle, ever.
  8. Try looking at Bonnie through a social status lens: Bonnie is a smart (good) African American without a college degree (not so good) who is a fitness instructor (stereotype: bimbo with potential to marry well). She married well enough to afford being a part of this community (good), but in actuality, hubby is a loser (not good) who abandoned his first wife (who has major social standing) and child (not good). Now here she is, and as mother to a young girl, she wants to fit into the community, and she wants her daughter to fit in and be respected. Maddie holds the obvious key, and she vehemently hates Nathan. I can't fault Bonnie's motives in backing Maddie into the corner.
  9. Gosh, so much to reply to! Aye. Mostly I don't buy that these playlists are put together by 5-6 year olds. Chloe possibly could have some hipster knowledge passed down from her older sister. Ziggy? What he knows is what Mom knows and whoever his school teachers and Saturday morning cartoons are pimping. I'm leaning with Mochamajesty: the more I see of Bonnie's actions and interactions, the more I see her manipulating events and relationships. I don't think Bonnie is doing this through the goodness of her heart; if Bonnie is so smart and so wise and so cool, why tf is she trying to force Maddie into a normalized relationship? My guess is she's trying to improve her and Nathan's (and Skye's) social prospects. I'm leaning this way, mostly because Bonnie has, without picking up the telephone herself or otherwise directly appealing to Maddie, used Nathan to push it through. Tech guy lechery. But still lechery. I'm surprised as all hell at the Maddie/affair reveal. I guess that's her real revenge-against Nathan fuck.. and I hope it doesn't blow up in her face. If Abby was aware, what are the chances she told Bonnie about it? It's also surprising as all hell to find out she never said a thing to Celeste, while all that was going on. I'd feel as much sympathy for Nathan as I would for any tool, but he's mounted enough passive-agressive attacks that I don't feel much need to defend him. And, not knowing how far /close that house was to the neighborhood transformers or powerlines, I'm on her side. It doesn't look irrational when you have a high-risk acquaintance getting 5 tumors scooped out of their brain. I'm trying to decide if that was brilliant writing, or heavy-handed. ie, if we hadn't yet confirmed for ourselves that Perry is an abusive psycho, the case is now open and shut. That made me laugh. It shouldn't have. The ladies should be free to age naturally. If they want. I'm okay with S. Woodley's performance in this ... her character has PSTD and is probably in a clinical depression, as well.
  10. I believe that, too. Are we seeing a flashback, or a dream, that is the question. Re: Dern. The picture from Wild At Heart, geez, that's in character and I dare say she was far prettier than her make-up. Also, see Ramblin' Rose, to catch a look from her youth. She's a very attractive woman, just not a typically homogeneous, Hollywood-ingenue beauty. "Striking," would be the word, although some people don't think that's a good thing.
  11. It actually wasn't half bad. He was, basically playing a King Robb whose head stays on.
  12. I was thinking that Celeste's wardrobe was reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, a la sweater/hip hugger combos.
  13. Dear Mods: It would be so nice if we could have separate episode threads to include book talk. Just sayin' ... Good call. It's possible Abigail is just being a teenager, wants to enjoy teenage life and test the limits without having to answer to a parent that acts like a parent. So far, we haven't gotten to see Madeline go off about Nathan in front of Abby, but maybe the daughter knows how the mother feels and, just like a teen wants to prove their parents wrong, wants to move in to see how wrong Maddy is, about Nathan. So far, on the surface, it looks like Abigail is simply playing a card that she has, that's not available to kids who live with both of their parents. Nathan continues to be immature / passive-aggressive and when I start to wonder what Bonnie sees in him, I notice that she's really the one controlling that relationship. Bonnie wants to do yoga, Nathan follows. Bonnie has to deal with a pissed off Madeline, Nathan goes and picks a fight with Ed, then comes back and complain Ed threatened to beat him up. Both made mountains out of that molehill. And now Abigail wants to move out. I wonder what they told her about Madeline's behavior. Glad to see the Frozen trip didn't wreck Ammabella's birthday party, but it was kind of weird the main attraction was dancing MILFs. Laura Dern continues to impress in her isolation. To some extent, Renata is comic relief and I feel bad for her; I get the feeling she's the type of woman who doesn't have much use for other women. And her wardrobe rocks. Perry and Celeste were less sexy, more sad, this week. Jane needs to make up a sperm bank story, pronto. And Ed's great.
  14. Until it's in the script, I wouldn't bet on that. Madeline, so far, seems incapable of keeping a lid on her anger no matter what the cause. If she is able to shield her own emotions re: Nathan and allow Abigail to have her own opinion and feelings, with no guilt trips, she really is SuperWoman. But she's not. If there's one thing about Maddy I do dislike, it's the way she is trying to use Chloe as a social bargaining chip. After watching this episode a few times, it really looks like Laura Dern is knocking it out of the ball park. All of them are, but Dern's hysterical when Renata's social mask falls off.
  15. Nope. This was a boundary that Bonnie needed to respect, as step-parent and she failed to. Let alone, in a situation with this much tension: Day 1: You sign a complaint about a theatrical production that turns out to be headed by your husband's resentful Ex. Crap. Not really your fault, though. Day 2: You are asked to take the offspring from your husband's previous relationship with said resentful and now even more pissed off Ex, to PP. Option 1: Explain that it would be unacceptable behavior on both your parts, and tell her she needs to go with someone else (the list of which could have included Nathan, Maddie, or someone in her class with their own car), or take an Uber or taxi. Option 2: Take the kid to PP. After all, even though she's not in a sexual relationship at this time, that could change at any minute and should be considered an urgent matter. Option 3: Take the kid ... and whine to your husband when his resentful ex confronts you. Spoiler talk: I agree, it was oddly worded, but think the threat Ed inferred was along the lines of, 'if you don't get your wife to behave, I will."
  16. Bonnie shouldn't have done it it, for no other reason, than she gave Madeline a perfectly valid reason to come get all up in her face. It is not cool for a stepmother to usurp parenting duties in a relationship where the actual mother isn't doing a bad job. Perhaps Abby felt more comfortable having Bonnie take her, but facing discomfort is one of those things you do to grow up. Trying to save herself that discomfort only resulted in being grilled, and being the reason for even more dischord between her mother and step.
  17. It may not be a repeat thing, but choking a jid, yeah, that's abusive.
  18. Their relationship is confusing. It's not the 'typical' domestic violence situation - where she cowers in fear of the abusive husband. Celeste slapped him back - hard. She only stopped when he slammed her into the wall. I think it's because a slap is one thing but at the end of the day, she would lose in any purely physical confrontation. Agreed. When the sexual tension came into play, initially, I thought Perry was going to rape Celeste, but it became apparent she had the choice to leave the room, or not, and chose to stay. AS is perfect for this role, he's like Eric (True Blood) without the fangs. Menacing and vulnerable in the same episode, and Kidman plays well off of it. I am not a book reader, but have been in the spoilers thread. I want Ziggy to be innocent, so it's easy to point out that any number of child abuse victims will purposely finger the wrong person, if they feel the consequences of being honest will be worse. Renata? What. A. Bitch. I'm glad Madeleine stepped in .. what Renata was trying to do to Ziggy was isolate him even more, socially. It's a war tactic, a little much for a 5 yo. I like Ed. I like that he is a nice guy without being a doormat. From what I've seen so far, Madeleine is a lucky, lucky woman on that front. And stepmom was waaaay out of line for taking Abigail to PP without discussing it with her.
  19. That's got nothing to do with sexytime. I can't imagine Drogo going downtown on Dany or any other woman, the Dothraki don't seem to place womens' pleasure very high on their priority list. Daario? Original recipe Daario, perhaps.
  20. Nymeria is now the leader of a huge pack of wolves. Canada has a lot of them, I hear. Perhaps it's not all CGI.
  21. http://www.vulture.com/2017/02/hbo-young-pope-unexpected-victory-for-the-network.html In terms of ratings, Young Pope hardly qualifies as a blockbuster, but it was far from a bomb: The network estimates each episode has been seen by an average of 4.7 million viewers across the network’s various linear and digital platforms. That’s a fraction of the audience the network’s fall hit Westworld pulled in season one (11.7 million) and below the buzzworthy summer mini-series The Night Of (7 million). But it does puts Pope on par with an HBO comedy staple such as Veep and ahead of the far more heavily hyped — and ultimately unsuccessful — Vinyl (4.3 million). ...But the limited financial (and even emotional) commitment the network made to Young Pope means HBO didn’t risk a whole lot to put the show on the air in the U.S. Given the solid ratings and reviews, HBO’s investment seems to have more than paid off. While this doesn’t guarantee there’ll be a second season of The Young Pope— Sorrentino has indicated he’s eager to do more episodes — it does mean a sophomore outing wouldn’t be at all surprising.
  22. I agree it took a huge turn here, and I think a huge part of it had to do with coping with Andrew's death. So much has been made of Lenny's abandonment; when you're an orphan, or otherwise lose a parent at a young age, unless there's a good reason not to you idealize that missing parent. Any child of divorce can tell you all about that. Losing Andrew was the first time in his life, probably, that forced Lenny to stop pining over the parents he didn't have long enough mourn the loss in the family he DID have. Doubly so when Spencer died, further along.
  23. It was hard to tell if that was Jesus or a Madonna, it went so fast. But it was a fun nod on a night that had many of them. I think a LOT of people who are watching are afraid to comment just yet, it's a really confounding show. And, thankfully, I have a suspicion that many TV critics and bloggers fear wading into these waters without their thigh boots on.
