50 best season finales in TV history
WRITTEN BY ABBY MONTEIL SEPTEMBER 30, 2020
https://stacker.com/stories/4549/50-best-season-finales-tv-history

Quote

To find the best TV finales, Stacker compiled data on every TV finale with more than 750 votes on IMDb, then ranked them according to IMDb user score. Ties were broken by the number of votes, and miniseries and documentary series were not included. However, midseason premieres that were followed by large gaps in their air date, such as “Mad Men” season seven, were included.

This data, compiled by Stacker on Sept. 15, 2020, includes 50 episodes from 35 different television shows. So sit back, grab a refreshment and some popcorn, and read on to see if your favorite season ending made the list. Beginning at #50 and counting down to #1, here are the best TV finales of all time.
*  *  *
#45. Arrow - Fadeout

- IMDb user rating: 9.4
- IMDb user votes: 2,532
- Season 8, Episode 10
- Air date: Jan. 28, 2020
- Director: James Bamford

“Fadeout,” the series finale of “Arrow,” unfolds in two different timelines. In one, Oliver Queen/Arrow, played by Stephen Amell, apprehends a human trafficker in 2012. In another timeline set in the present, the remaining members of Team Arrow rescue Oliver’s son William from the same trafficker.
*  *  *
#13. Arrow - Lian Yu

- IMDb user rating: 9.7
- IMDb user votes: 6,964
- Season 5, Episode 23
- Air date: May 24, 2017
- Director: Jesse Warn

In the season five finale of “Arrow,” Oliver/Arrow, played by Stephen Amell, searches for his son, William, played by Jack Moore, who has been kidnapped by his vigilante enemy, Adrian, played by Josh Segarra. Oliver recruits several unlikely allies, including Nyssa, played by Katrina Law, and Slade, played by Manu Bennett, to get his son back. It’s the last episode of the show that featured a flashback storyline to Oliver’s past.

All "Superhero" Shows Included On This List:
#50. Daredevil - A Cold Day in Hell’s Kitchen
#47. Shadowhunters - Beside Still Water
#45. Arrow - Fadeout
#42. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - S.O.S.: Part 2
#38. Daredevil - Daredevil
#34. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - What We’re Fighting For
#21. Angel - Not Fade Away
#18. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Becoming: Part 2
#13. Arrow - Lian Yu

The results of the poll, and the intro text. I'll miss his passive aggressive and transparently biased write ups. ("Thriving fanbase" that netted 19% of the vote in one category, lol)

This year, we had fewer categories, and also removed some of the more negative ones, both out of respect for the show and the talent, but also because the last thing 2020 needs is more negativity.

You can find past results here.

Votes were limited to 1 per IP and “won” fair and square — if something got the top spot, that means enough fans were motivated to vote.

Maybe we will do this all over again if Green Arrow and the Canaries gets another chance, or we can do a full-series poll like we once did for Smallville.

Kat McNamara won with 79% of the vote, that's more than SA got for best male actor. In a year that EBR wasn't eligible under the rules it should have been a blow out for KC if she really had that huge a fan base, especially because whilst Kat has her own large one they're less likely to vote in Arrow polls than Shadowhunters. Laurel also came in at 30% in "favourite character". She obviously has some passionate online fans but but either they don't vote in fan polls (on a famous site that is well known for disliking Felicity) or she just doesn't have the numbers.

I did think her directing was good and would put her above Bam but not above Antonio Negret.

It's worse than that - "Oliver Queen came in at #2 with 30% and Laurel Lance came in #3 at 12%" for Favorite Character.

The GATV Awards results are not surprising, but still very gratifying. Here's the related (neutrally worded) GATV tweet...

Oops. I wonder how many people voted this year given Arrow being off the air and everything that's going on? Huge amount of enthusiasm going on in the likes and retweets. /sarcasm. Although none of these are in the slightest bit surprising I *am* a little surprised Laurel doesn't do better at least in the percentages for some crazy reason.

I'm sure it's a total coincidence that this will air on the CW right before the season premieres of the Arrowverse shows.

The option to allow online submissions makes me skeptical of the legitimacy of these awards. Since it's airing on the CW, I'm going to guess The Flash is going to sweep the Superhero Series/actor/actress category.

Despite spelling her name like she's a 15 year old on AIM, Felicity Smoak is kind of a cool character. It's too bad that she falls into all the tropey pitfalls of fictional hacking. It's almost as if television writers don't think viewers will understand that a character is a hacker unless they're gothed out and speaking gobbledegook. The real reason we think she's the worst is because she's against erasing all of the world's student loans.

Harmless doesn't mean incapable. Felicity is a tech genius and can hack into anything in a matter of seconds by slamming on a keyboard and spewing hacker gibberish. But she's so bubbly and adorable that you can't help but love her. She is one of the very few sources of light and levity on Arrow, which probably makes us love her that much more. Plus, any woman who gets Oliver Queen's attention has got something working for her.

Best TV Villains, Ranked: 50 Baddies From Alias, Vampire Diaries, Dynasty, Game of Thrones, Arrow and More

Note: We limited our picks to just one villain per series, which certainly wasn’t an easy task when it came to the plentiful options on Game of Thrones. That said, one actor is so good at being bad that he appears on our ranking twice, for two very different roles!

17. Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, Arrow
Take Slade Wilson — a badass with a legitimate beef — and jack him up on Mirakuru, and you get the most formidable, and personal, of foes for Oliver Queen. The way that one-eyed Slade slid back into Oliver’s life still gives us chills, while his brutal kills (not Moira!) made us double over, as Oliver did, in anguish.

Arrowverse: 10 Best Kisses, Ranked
Kath Leroy   November 3, 2020
https://screenrant.com/arrowverse-best-kisses-ranked/

Quote

7/10  The What-If Kiss
...
Barry and Felicity are one of the couples that never truly happened - but would have been perfect together. Felicity liked Barry from the first moment she met him, and he also returned her affection since they had a lot in common. He even went to dance with her at a party even though he stated he couldn't dance.

And in the first season of The Flash, Barry ran to accompany Felicity on her way back home. They kissed, but even though it was a sweet moment showing what could have been, they were both already in love with someone else by this point.
*  *  *
5/10  The Reunion Kiss 2.0
...
Speaking of reunion kisses, there's also the one between Sara Lance and Oliver Queen. These two had a brief relationship in the past but it ended in tragedy when the ship they were on, Queen's Gambit, sank.

However, when Sara returned back to Starling City, they quickly rekindled their romance - and it all started with this kiss that was intense, full of passion. And even though Sara and Oliver later broke up, there's no denying they were a good couple - both fighters, with tragic past experience and a strong desire to right their wrongs. They remained close friends even after their break-up, and when Oliver died, Sara took it really hard.
*  *  *
1/10  The First Kiss
...
Oliver and Felicity weren't originally meant to be a couple since Felicity was supposed to be a much less important character. But the creators brought them together and many fans loved them. Their romance wasn't perfect, they broke up multiple times, but in the end, they reunited in the afterlife.

As for the best kiss between them, one of the most notable ones is their first kiss. It happened in the first episode of the third season of Arrow when Oliver kissed Felicity to prove that he did have feelings for her.

10/10 The Alternate Kiss [Barry & Earth-2 Iris]
9/10  The Alternate Kiss 2.0 [Earth-X Leo & Earth-X Ray]
8/10  The Reunion Kiss [Caitlin & Ronnie/Stein]
7/10  The What-If Kiss [Felicity & Barry]
6/10  The Distracting Kiss [Thea & Roy]
5/10  The Reunion Kiss 2.0 [Oliver & Sara]
4/10  The Goodbye Kiss [Sara & Snart]
3/10  The Fake Kiss [Barry & Caitlin]
2/10  The Kryptonite Kiss [Kara & Mon-El]
1/10  The First Kiss [Oliver & Felicity]

Year in Review: The 22 Moments ('Destiel'! McDreamy! Riker and Troi!) TV Fans Had Been Waiting For

Quote

Fan service — or a show’s move to meet its fervent viewers’ demands — often gets a bad rap, particularly when said service doesn’t make much sense given current characters and plot. But when a show serves up something you’ve been waiting for for a very long time, and does so with style and love? Yeah, that’s a good fan feeling.

And since 2020 has been short on good things overall, we thought we’d gather our favorite fan-service-y moments in one place. The assemblage includes returns of favorite faces (we still haven’t recovered from Grey’s Anatomy‘s McDreamy’s surprise), nostalgic callbacks with wry twists (aka 95 percent of Saved By the Bell‘s continuation series) and super satisfying scenes from series finales (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s flash-forward, anyone?).

And before you put on your “Well, actually…” hat, know this: We stretched the definition of fan service when it suited us, because celebrating when your favorite show does something you’ve wanted your favorite show to do is #selfcare.

The most memorable shipper moments of 2020

Believe it or not, 2020 had its fair share of romance. There were first kisses, happy endings, and everything in between. Here are the TV shipper moments we cherished most.

Olicity's reunion, Arrow
There was no guarantee that Emily Bett Rickards would return as Felicity Smoak in Arrow’s final season after departing the show in season 7. Thank Beebo she did. After Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) sacrificed his life to restart the multiverse in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, he went to rest in a paradise dimension and Felicity eventually joined him there, thus giving the couple the happy ending they fought oh so hard for. —Chancellor Agard

Oliver and Felicity reunite in the afterlife – Arrow

We’ve had a complicated relationship with Arrow throughout its 8 season run, and to say we were disappointed in the finale would be an understatement. Still, this is the show that kicked off the Arrowverse, and we have lots of fond memories attached to it. Seeing Oliver Queen die and the show come to an end was heartbreaking, but it was nice to see him finally happy with the love of his life.

Olicity ~ ‘Arrow’

Yes, Arrow ended this 2020, it seems like eons ago, but not a year has passed.

We would not have ended the show in this way, we’re much more traditional when it comes to show endings (and we still don’t understand that, having a choice, they chose this, but things are as they are) but there is no doubt that the moment in where Oliver and Felicity meet in the afterlife and just live happily ever after is one of our favorites of this 2020.

No one but them deserves all the happiness in the world, after all the shit they went through, fighting Crisis included. Their ending may not be what we would have chosen, but at the end of the day, they are together forever.

Whether it's a pair we haven't seen in some time (like Wynonna Earp's WayHaught), the most stable coupling in an entire franchise (NCIS: Los Angeles' Densi), or even a reunion that took a couple decades (Arrow's Olicity), there were plenty of happy moments to bring us joy when we tuned in. (For others, like The Flash's Barry and Iris, it was just too bittersweet and rough — she's trapped in the Mirrorverse — to make this list.)

Arrow's Oliver and Felicity

After Arrow fans had to watch hero Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) die in the crossover (across two months and technically in two different years) more than once, he more than deserved his happily ever after. As tragic as it is that he didn’t get to raise his kids, we did see him reunite with his wife when Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) stepped out of the Monitor’s portal into what’s best described as an afterlife of sorts (though we didn’t see her die and Oliver became something else).

Arrowverse's Anti-Monitor

It had to be a major villain that would bring the Arrowverse shows — Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow — together in a five-part crossover spanning two months (beginning in December 2019 and ending in January 2020). Not only did the superheroes that were left when the final two parts aired earlier this year have to put the universe back together after the multiverse was wiped out, but doing so claimed the life of the hero that started The CW’s super franchise: Arrow‘s Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).

Arrow changed the face of The CW almost a decade ago, becoming the flagship series for a shared television universe, not unlike what Marvel has done on the big screen. The show ended with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) getting a happy reunion with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) in the afterlife, which was a welcome respite after the hooded hero spent so much of his vigilante tenure tortured and convinced that he had to live a solitary life to keep those he loved safe. The end of Arrow meant the true end of an era for The CW, and it's strange to think of its universe continuing on without the original show. The solace is that the Arrowverse has been left in very capable, heroic hands. Read our finale recap, as well as actor David Ramsey's thoughts on the finale. - Megan Vick

The Oliver-less team’s final mission — to rescue a kidnapped teenage William — was a bit perfunctory, and the new Season 1 flashbacks it teed up were conspicuously missing Felicity (due to former cast member Emily Bett Rickards’ limited availability). But Oliver’s funeral, well-attended as it was by favorite and even some “resurrected” characters, ended the series on a properly reverent note, the hint of Diggle’s “green” destiny was pleasingly teasy and the closing scene that reunited Olicity in some sort of “afterlife” promised the ultimate (if kinda lonely?) Happily Ever After.

Shout Out to All My Ships of 2020 as We Sail Into 2021

  • The series I’m very late to and I can’t pick a ship for because my opinion keeps changing: Arrow

*  *  *
Series: Arrow

Where to watch: Netflix

How many seasons: 8

Will there be more: Nope, it’s done!

I know I am extremely late in my viewing of the CW’s entire line of superhero shows. That’s my bad. But I’m here now and I … can’t decide what my ships are for this one. Mostly because every time I think I have one something happens to make me turn the other way.

For. Example.

In season 1 I thought Oliver, Laurel, and Tommy would be a cute OT3. I liked that Oliver didn’t have an issue with them being together (and was surprised because I seriously thought the series was gonna do the “how could you be with my girlfriend even if y’all thought I was dead” trope) and overtime he ended up having chemistry with BOTH of them. It would’ve been Team Childhood Friends and I was ready for it.

Except.

Tommy breaks up with Laurel because she’s still in love with Oliver, Oliver tells Tommy to go after her because he obviously still loves her (and Oliver isn’t going to pursue her), then Oliver… sleeps with Laurel… and Tommy sees them making out from outside since they’re doing it in front of her open window.

I call this “CW-ing,” which is when the network adds unnecessary drama. It happens A LOT in this series. Like, for a hot minute I thought Oliver and Diggle would make a fine ship, or Oliver and Felicity, or the three of them (because I stan OT3s) but Oliver hooked up with Sara, you know Laurel’s sister? The one Oliver cheated on Laurel with before he was thought to be dead? The one Laurel found out was sleeping with her boyfriend because they BOTH were on the boat that sank and BOTH reported as dead?

Just… um… Team Felicity and Diggle (though Felicity and Ray are cute too). I’m only on the 3rd season, though, so I’m expecting this to change at some point.

Thinking about some other finales and the ups and downs of Arrow it ended well compared to how they could have gone out, even if it wasn't the happy raising of the kids (maybe with occasional missions) that I would have chosen myself.

As for changing ships, I never really did for Arrow. Disliked Lauriver from the get go wasn't a big fan of dead brother's wife. Merlance have great chemistry but rewatching really showed Laurel was using him as a place holder and was never really that into it. Was into Olicity from the start but didn't think it would turn romantic, I thought we'd get the Clark/Chloe route until late in 2A and even then wasn't sure it would stick.

Interesting that person ships Delicity romantically. I never saw that personally. They have great chemistry but even in their early one-on- one's it never came off as romantic. Now I want to find an Earth where that happened just for the Woah. Carly was a good character except being Dig's sister in law so he could show Oliver how sibling swapping is done honourably and Dyla was awesome from the start. I could read an OTA OT3 crack though but I've never seen one.

I'm actually surprised there wasn't more of Oliver/Dig and especially Oliver/Tommy (two white guy woobies style) but I never got that vibe from either of them.

This is the last year for a ship we loved since the moment Emily Bett Rickards and her red pen made an appearance on Arrow. In fact, there were times where we loved nothing about the show, but we always loved Olicity. And that’s why we both raged and rejoiced at the ending they got. Yes, they were together, but we’re not really fans of afterlife reunions. I mean, yes, better than nothing, but a couple who survived so much, who conquered so much, who brought so many so much happiness deserved an actual life together, didn’t they?

But why? To set up a spin-off that we didn’t end up getting, anyway? To be edgy? Because superheroes can’t get a happy ending, that’s cliché? Whatever the reason, it was dumb, and it ended up completely ruining a show most of us had already given up on years ago, but that some of us still had fond memories of. Now there’s no chance I’m ever going to back and re-watching anything, that’s a promise.

As if we weren’t emotional enough this year, we faced the ending of some of our favorite shows. Some were planned, such as Arrow, Supernatural, Schitt’s Creek, The 100, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., etc. And others were due to cancelations, such as One Day at a Time, Party of Five, Stumptown, etc.

Even if some of these shows had time to write a proper ending to bring their stories to a close, none of us were ready.

Oliver Queen, Arrow

This is another one of those that we just want to take back because it was so …pointless? Yay, an 8 year journey ends on a death! Just what we wanted – NOT. Can TV shows just stop doing that? Plus, why did Oliver have to die again? Oh yes, to set up a spin-off we didn’t even get! Wonderful.

Stephen Amell might have always thought this was the perfect ending for Oliver Queen, but let us be the ones to tell you he knows even less than Jon Snow. This is not what the fans were around for – not even after they did whatever it is they did to “reunite” him with Felicity. That’s not a happy ending, that’s placing a Band-Aid on a broken bone and hoping like hell no one notices.

For a show that started off doing everything it could to call its hero anything but Green Arrow, Arrow became one of the most important pieces of the growth of DC's heroes over the 2010s. Premiering on the CW Network in 2012, Arrow— which was clearly influenced by Nolan's Batman films— started as a stand-alone series about Oliver Queen as he battled evil in his hometown of Starling City.

This "realistic" approach to a superhero quickly gave way to the Arrowverse, a series of seven TV series and counting. While Arrow came to an end in 2020, the legacy it created will continue to live on for years to come.

10/10 Batman Signaled The End Of The Standalone DC Movie Era With The Dark Knight Rises

We love the series but clearly sometimes, there is abuse on the side of the writers who make us wait for weights before FINALLY concretizing the relations of certain characters. Although they don’t always happen on the show at the same time (like Rick and Michonne from The Walking Dead), or that we know they’ve slept together offscreen before (like Brittany and Santana from Glee), it still had to wait a long time to see some couples kissing on the screen. Examples.

*  *  *
Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak on Arrow (Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards) – This relationship has been very rocky to say the least; and given how upset Felicity currently is with Oliver, it’s not going to be smooth sailing. That being said I want to believe that TPTB at The CW and specifically behind the show itself, will find a way to get them together on strong footing, eventually.

At a lighting ceremony, Oliver made a very public display of love by celebrating “the one who lights his way” in front of all their friends and family members, not to mention dozens of Star City residents. “Felicity Smoak, would you make me the happiest man on the face of the Earth?” Oliver asked on stage. For someone who had lived in darkness for so long, it was a surprisingly showy and vulnerable move.

Who doesn't love a happily ever after? We know we do! And what better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than by celebrating some of our favorite TV ships that sailed off into the sunset. While their shows may be over, we will continue to go back and rewatch them again and again just to relive their beautiful love stories. So keep reading below to lose yourself in a bit of sappy romantic TV couple feels! Also, these aren't in any particular order! It's just a small collection of some of the ships we love that got their happy endings!

ARROW - OLIVER AND FELICITY

As if we aren't going to take this opportunity to discuss one of our all-time favorite couples! Oliver and Felicity had a beautiful love story full of passion, support, and the occasional breakup thrown in to add some frustrating drama. While it was a little bit of a slow burn, we didn't have to wait too many seasons before Olicity set sail!

From their first epic kiss to saving each other's ass, an incredibly romantic proposal, a fake wedding, a real wedding, kids, and even meeting in the afterlife. Their relationship was as much of a journey as the entirety of Arrow. They made us laugh, swoon, sob uncontrollably, and left us in ugly tears. It was quite an adventure!

Arrow tells the story of entitled billionaire playboy, Oliver Queen, and his return home after spending five years on a deserted island. Though he maintains the party-boy persona by day, by night, he hunts down criminals in his city armed with a bow and arrow and a whole lot of martial arts.

Before we even begin, we know there's no way to please everyone when ranking the finest females in DC and Marvel history. Second, superheroes are defined as any hero within the DC and Marvel universe (plus a sneaky hero or two from elsewhere) rather than someone with super powers. Of course, this list of 15 is not an exhaustive list, but it's made with love and sheer admiration. If you don't see your favourite on the list, let us know in the comments below (play nice).

14. Felicity Smoak

Wait a second before you yell at us. Felicity Smoak isn't a traditional entry into a female superhero list, she dons no mask, has no powers to speak of, but that doesn't mean she hasn't earned her way on to the list through loyalty, heart and off the chart intelligence. Originally the stepmother to Ronnie Raymond The CW gave her a make-over after Emily Bett Rickards impressed them performing alongside Stephen Amell. It's this version that now appears in the comics.

There's no one with Smoak's brains, the Green Arrow would have been nothing without her behind the computer and in his ear on The CW series, and the later comics. She's proved divisive, but there's no denying fleshing out her character on the small screen has created yet another strong female hero, and this time one we can aspire to be, after all nailing code is a little more likely than mastering the cosmic power of the universe for the average woman.

15. Scarlet Witch
14. Felicity Smoak
13. Gamora
12. Emma Frost
11. Black Widow
10. Batgirl
9. Shuri
8. She-Hulk
7. Wasp
6. Supergirl
5. Barbara Gordon aka Oracle
4. Storm
3. Captain Marvel
2. Jean Grey
