These Are The Most Streamed Movies And TV Shows Of The Decade, According To Vudu
AJ Dellinger, Contributor  Dec. 31, 2019

Quote

Over on the TV side of the coin, the super hero effect as also felt. Seven of the top 10 most streamed TV shows of the decade were shows that can trace their origins back to comic books — though the domination kicked in during the back half of the decade. At the start of the 2010s, action dominated. In 2010, the first season of 24 was the most-streamed show, according to Vudu, as people tuned in to relieve the first season of Jack Bauer’s seemingly endless series of bad days. In 2011, the fourth season of Breaking Bad took the top spot — the season before Walter White’s harrowing arc came to a close. Season three of The Vampire Diaries dominated 2012.

Then came the comic book shows. 2013 and 2014 saw seasons one and two of CW’s Arrow take the top spot for most streamed TV show. Another CW hit climbed the ladder in 2015 and 2016, with the first two runs of The Flash dominating those years. To close out the decade, it was all The Walking Dead. The massively popular zombie drama took the top spot in 2017, 2018 and 2019 with seasons seven, eight and nine of its run, respectively.

Underrated Actor – Stephen Amell, Arrow. Given that this is the final season of the CW series, it only makes sense for the man behind Oliver Queen to get a healthy dose of love for it. His fans have come through and come through big.

ARROW: SEASON 2 (2013)  95%
...
We’ll be honest, Arrow’s quality wavers in the extreme, but its second season was a standout in terms of achievement and intent. Intended to be a season-long tale called “City of Heroes,” the show expanded its universe with the arrival of Sarah Lance (Caity Lotz), the return of Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), and the debut appearance of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). It was also the year its flashbacks to Lian Yu felt the most resonant. In that story, we see what turned Slade from Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) best ally into his worst enemy just as the present day story carefully built up Slade’s plan for revenge. The show would try to mine that idea the next few seasons, but the device never works as well again as it did here. Also, this season set the standard for all the Arrowverse shows to follow.

The Biggest TV Deaths Of 2019
LAURA HURLEY  JANUARY 3, 2020

Quote

Oliver Queen, Arrow
Arrow leading man Oliver Queen's death has actually been foreshadowed since all the way back in December 2018, so the demise of the Arrow-verse's founding superhero in the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover wasn't shocking. That said, some were surprised that he died with little fanfare in the first of five crossover episodes. His friends dipped him in the Lazarus Pit to bring him back, but he was still kinda sorta dead by the end of the first few episodes of the crossover event. It's probably a safe bet that he'll be back among the living for the Arrow series finale later in January, but his "Crisis" death was a very big deal.

The Clock Tower: Our All-Time Favorite Moments From the Arrowverse

Group Hugs
The DCTV Trinity of Oliver Queen, Barry Allen, and Kara Danvers will forever warm my cold little heart. While we’ve finally seen Oliver step into the role of Green Arrow in his last several seasons, he’s played Batman for basically the majority of his run. His humor (and his cooking) didn’t start coming into play in full force until Beth Schwartz took over as showrunner. Bless her and her incomparable team for that.

Every team needs a straight man, and Oliver acts as just that in contrast to Barry and Kara’s never-ending wells of hope. Each crossover group hug is a thing of beauty, and I’m definitely not sappy over the fact that we won’t have any more after this year.

Felicity. Megan. Smoak.
This entry is listed as the character because I couldn’t pick just one of her moments. I love Arrow, but man oh man was it bad for a few seasons. Felicity Smoak’s warmth, wit, and endless babbling was the only thing that kept me going through those rough seasons. Even when you take all the crying she was forced to do into consideration.

Felicity has been the show’s conscience and heart from the jump. What was meant to be a one-off appearance turned into a founding member of Original Team Arrow (OTA). The rest, as they say, is history. Her presence has been sorely missed during Arrow’s final season. Thankfully, The Bitch with Wifi will be returning for the series finale.

The Undertaking and the Death of Tommy Merlyn
It’s been, like, seven years since Tommy died and I still get emotional every time Colin Donnell’s name comes across the screen. As far as I’m concerned, he’s just as much a member of OTA as John Diggle or Felicity Smoak. All three of them had to put it all on the line to help create The Green Arrow we’re finally enjoying in his last season, one of them just happened to die for it.

The Undertaking might have happened years ago, but it’s difficult to pin down a finale more relevant to the series. Tommy’s sacrifice is used as a pivotal turn in Oliver’s decision to use murder as a reasonable means for justice. Or at least mostly. Ollie will still mess up a few times before it’s all said and done, but that’s just the theme of the show!

With apologies to Barry and Iris, the premiere love story of the Arrowverse has always been Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). The seventh season of Arrow showed us a future where these two were separated for over twenty years, as Oliver was taken and seemingly killed during the Crisis. We don’t know his ultimate fate as of yet (there is some definite foreshadowing), but we do know they reunited when the Monitor takes Felicity away to a place “from which there is no return.” ....

6. Arrow (CW)
...
Since it’s conception in 2012, Arrow had redefined what a comic book TV adaptation could do. Out of its successful first two seasons, it managed to create a bigger world with spinoff shows that became interconnected. With crossovers with The Flash among others, Arrow managed to help redefine comic book TV. While it has definitely had its lows in certain seasons, it somehow always found a way to return to form in spectacular fashion. Take Season 8 for example, the final season of the superhero series.

Although only being ten episodes, the final season of Arrow manages to do so much with each episode. Building on the character of Oliver, this last installment has him look at his legacy of the past 8 years worth of television, serving as a celebration of what Arrow is. With clever callbacks and melancholic tone, Season 8 has proven to be one of the best yet.

Honorable Mentions:
Stranger Things (Netflix)
Rick and Morty
Mindhunter S2 (Netflix)
Righteous Gemstones (HBO)

10.  Harley Quinn (DC Universe)
9. Umbrella Academy (Netflix)
8. The Boys (Amazon Prime)
7. When They See Us (Netflix)
6. Arrow (CW)
5. Doom Patrol (DC Universe)

Performers of the Month - December 2019 Voting **RESULTS**

When any show begins the transition to its natural end, viewers start to wonder what its legacy will be. New characters are often introduced to mixed reactions from an audience waiting to see what emotional resolution will be awarded to their favorites they have followed for years. Arrow introduced an actual legacy character in Mia Smoak, the daughter of beloved original characters Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), played by Katherine McNamara. While carrying the responsibility of continuing the spirits of her character’s parents, McNamara also got to create her own equally thrilling hero, which is no easy feat. Viewers were wary of a new character at first, but the gusto that McNamara brings to the role proved irresistible. Her fantastic portrayal of Mia’s equally powerful fragility and strength as she molds her own identity has even created the potential for more stories with her character in a spinoff. McNamara turned in some of her best work yet in Purgatory when Mia is forced to confront losing her father. For that performance, viewers voted her SpoilerTV’s December’s Outstanding Performer of the Month.

HONORABLE MENTION | As Crisis neared its end, Arrow‘s Stephen Amell had a formidable task: bring to life an imposing new persona, and then ease into death the hero that we knew and loved. On the former front, Amell found just the right level of gravity in Spectre’s voice, as the powerful figure laid out for the Paragons their universes-saving itinerary. Similarly, when toe-to-toe with the Anti-Monitor, he projected a ferocity that sold us on Spectre being the villain’s equal. But it was in Amell’s very final moments, as an undefeated yet depleted Oliver, that he beautifully capped the character’s eight-season arc. “You did it. You all did it,” he said, beaming, to Barry and Sara. He then noted that while he in death will be at peace, “the real heroes are the ones that keep going. So keep going. Don’t ever stop. This new world, it needs both of you.” One final time Amell hit the bull’s-eye.

Readers' Choice Most Outstanding Performer of December - Katherine McNamara
Posted by Aimee Hicks at January 31, 2020
https://www.spoilertv.com/2020/01/performers-of-month-readers-choice-most.html

Quote

There is no getting around the fact that the version of Arrow that has entertained loyal fans for eight years is coming to an end. When any show begins the transition to its natural end, viewers start to wonder what its legacy will be. A new generation and iteration of characters are often introduced to mixed reactions from an audience waiting to see what emotional resolution will be awarded to their favorites. To honor Arrow the writers and producers chose to create a character to carry on the legacy of Oliver Queen – the Green Arrow. Viewers were wary at first when Arrow introduced Mia Smoak, the daughter of beloved original characters Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) played by powerhouse actress Katherine McNamara. While carrying the responsibility of living up to her parent’s spirit, McNamara got to create her own equally thrilling hero, which is no easy feat. McNamara quickly won over fans with her portrayal of Mia Smoak’s equally powerful fragility and strength. Her growth into the legacy of Green Arrow was cemented by the beginning of the passing of the torch from Oliver to his child in Purgatory (8x7). McNamara turned in some of her best work yet when Mia is forced to confront losing her father. For that performance, viewers voted her SpoilerTV’s December Outstanding Performer of the Month. McNamara joins a small but elite category of performers that have won Performer of the Month more than once; even more rare, she has won for playing two different characters on separate shows.

The Mia that McNamara presents here is one of the more stoic versions of the character. Having been whisked away to the unfamiliar island of Lian Yu, on the heels of a recent journey through time and space, Mia is unimpressed. McNamara portrays this through the quiet, watchful stance she assumes as Mia takes in her new surroundings. She stands to the back of the group with her arms crossed as Oliver explains to them that everything up to now has brought them here. The look McNamara lets linger on Mia’s face is unreadable but unmissable. When Oliver mentions a weapon that will help with the upcoming Crisis, something sparks in Mia. McNamara steps forward eagerly, showing us Mia’s investment in the positive possibilities behind the statement. It falls to Oliver to bring his daughter’s hopes back down to Earth. He asks for a moment alone with Mia and her brother William (Ben Lewis). We see Mia recognize his intent before he even speaks. McNamara draws back, her body posture defensive towards her father, protective towards her brother. When Oliver confesses to his children he won’t survive Crisis, the gut-punch cracks across McNamara’s frame, and she catches her breath. The moment flashes by, but it effectively establishes the weight of this impending loss. She reacts immediately with anger, snapping at her father that he’s giving up, and turning her back to him. The truth is though, at this moment, Mia isn’t truly angry, she’s scared and in denial that she will soon lose the father she just met. The way McNamara smooths her expression into cold stillness creates a tangible wall between father and daughter, the reverberations of which transfer directly to the viewers, ensuring that we need the reconciliation this episode must inevitably build toward.

One of the greatest joys of Arrow’s final seasons has been watching the relationship between the Queen children develop. Lewis and McNamara have crafted a moving sibling bond that will stand the test of time. That bond comes into focus again in this episode. As William works on configuring the weapon, Mia perches on a stool in the back, laboriously examining every inch of her knife’s surface. With each deliberate gesture Mia is making, McNamara shows that her character is purposefully trying to distract herself from the gravity of their situation while also wanting William to notice the dissonance in her voice and demeanor. He does notice her purposeful silence and walks over to her. McNamara lets Mia carefully unspool what she’s feeling. She feigns a callous attitude towards their father’s life-and-death situation, but her eyes are very attentive as she waits for William’s expected response. She is contrary, both wanting his sympathy and wanting him to help her be angry. When Mia turns around to face William, to deliver her faux superiority at being right about their father being untrustworthy, there is a slip in her bitter mask, an unspoken plea for William to echo her words, to feed that rage. He doesn’t take the bait, and Lewis delivers the most gentle, compassionate turn of his head. McNamara reels back at once, with Mia again turning her back on her family member and storming away.
*  *  *
The final scene of the episode is a true passing of the torch. Mia approaches her father and apologizes for not having been proud of him, for resenting him. There is a maturity and a resolution in her demeanor at this point. The Mia that first came to Lian Yu would have been, as Oliver joked, the first one on the rescue plane off the island. The one that stands here now is far different from that one. McNamara brings in the most grownup version of Mia here, carefully choosing her words, while also putting a quiet request in Mia’s stance. A wish for reconciliation. Amell’s voice cracks with loving pride as Oliver tells Mia that he can’t be completely angry at the island since his experiences there have brought him to this moment where he’s standing in front of his daughter. Happiness diffuses across McNamara’s face. She smiles, brings her shoulders up a little straighter, and Mia thanks her father for letting her be a part of his story. Something tells him she’s going to create her own stories. They hug fiercely. Their departure from the island is interrupted by the arrival of Harbinger to warn of Crisis. Mia instinctively moves closer to Oliver, that determined look on her face that McNamara effectively uses to show Mia’s warrior side emerging. It is at this point Crisis arrives on Earth-1 and Mia is where she wants to be, by her father’s side.

It is no surprise that Arrow fans are eagerly cheering for the CW to order Green Arrow and the Canaries, the spinoff continuation that will feature Katherine McNamara’s Mia Smoak as one of the lead characters. McNamara’s electric chemistry with all her costars, coupled with the love and dedication she pours into shaping her character, plus her commitment to the physicality of the role has given her the opportunity to build a beloved new addition to the Arrowverse from scratch. For all the reasons mentioned in this article, and all the dynamic performances she’s given on the show thus far, McNamara was voted December’s Performer of the Month by our readers.

Here Are 23 Of The Most Unforgettable TV Moments From This Week
Nora Dominick   February 7, 2020
https://www.buzzfeed.com/noradominick/tv-moments-of-week-2-7-20

15. The Flash returned with its first episode after "Crisis on Infinite Earths," and featured Diggle visiting Barry after Oliver's death.

Oliver was already retired and living off the grid with his wife and baby, planning on getting custody of his son. He didn’t  “learn to too late”, he was basically dragged away because he was told the whole universe was going to end if he didn’t help and that he was going to die anyway. The way the Flash writers treat Arrow characters is ridiculous and disrespectful and I hope they never get to borrow or mention them again.

I totally agree. Also, I posted some quotes from this episode in the Quotes thread and they had Diggle say something like, "Felicity skimped on the dry-cleaning?" when Barry questioned why there was a smudge of dirt on the GA mask that Oliver gifted to Barry. I found that comment to be both disrespectful and sexist.

Now comes the hard part where you can only vote for 1 performer. The poll will be live until Tuesday, February 11th at 6 pm ET. After you vote be sure to make a pitch in the comments section for what the performer you voted for most deserves to win.

And totally lacking in class (on the part of the writers and Barry). Felicity was so devastated by the death of her husband that she couldn't get out of bed but she still thought to gift Barry the mask in memory of the fact that he gave it to Oliver 7 years earlier, and they're still throwing shade at her.  Not funny, guys.

It just unreasonably annoyed me because it's not even a new development with Oliver, he's given up for a peaceful life with family, multiple times since S3 and Diggle has seen that. If he wanted to pass that message on it should have been that he knew that because he had found that with Felicity and the kids. Even in the depths of S3 he was sacrificing everything for Thea and everyone else. And I got a frustrating feeling that Barry's going to have a 99% very happy finale alive with twin babies etc. Oh well.

The Best and Worst of TV 2019 - RESULTS

Hmm. Interesting list. I haven't seen All American since S1 so I can't comment on that. Charmed dumped a lot of stuff that wasn't working but I can't say what they replaced it with is working any better and whilst I enjoyed a lot of Arrow this mini series it's not fair to compare 10 episodes to an entire season. Take out the crossover, the pilot and the finale and you have the length of the Prison arc and a lot of people would have also loved S7 in its entirety if it had ended with Olicity kissing as he's released from prison (with bonus 3D death).

Like newly resurrected Tommy, I'm grading on a curve and I have to say compared to Supernatural's final Season so far, Arrow's short one was a revelation.

As for happy endings, I, too,  think the Flash will get one. At this point I'll just settle for the Flash writers no longer trashing Oliver at every turn/in x-overs. *very angrily looking at you, Elseworlds*

And yet when it comes to leadership of multi-team-ups, the former "killers" are the ones to turn to. First Oliver, now Sara.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it a lot. I just think any season that's heavy on nostalgia and the most beloved guest stars and going for broke is always going to be better than a 22 episode season of anything. I will give them full credit for the merging timelines twist, that was inspired.

I gave up on SPN many years ago and nothing I've seen since has enticed me to go back and I think the finale will be lucky to be a fraction as decent as Arrow's despite the ups and downs of it and COIE.

Since this is the awards thread, my least favourite crossover award is now definitely Elseworlds. The Legends one kicked off the BMD arc and the Hawks/Savage but I now like Adult William a lot and Olicity resolved those issues eventually and I still love LOT. Elseworlds has some good comedy but was completely ruined by the wholesale trashing of Oliver by almost everyone so he could sacrifice himself in some rushed death scenes this crossover (itself very, very uneven), even if they did all acknowledge his sacrifice and he's Spectre!Alive.

TV's Worst Couples: 30+ Pairs We Wish We Could Forget This Valentine's Day
By Team TVLine / February 13, 2020
https://tvline.com/gallery/worst-tv-couples-photos/worst-tv-couples-arrow-oliver-susan/

Arrow‘s Oliver and Susan
Not only did they “meet not anything close to cute” — the Channel 52 news reporter made herself known by publicly trashing his mayoralcy — their eventual hook-up was colored by the fact that she was snooping into his possible secret identity. In a season that also gave us Felicity/Billy, it was a bridge too far.

5. Ollie and Felicity — Arrow

I still have mixed feelings about the final season of Arrow, but it hasn’t changed my feelings about Olicity. They remain one of my favorite TV couples of all time, so it’s natural that they’re on my list of favorite TV couples on Netflix.

Felicity has always made Oliver a better man. She’s called him out when he’s been a jerk and made him want to actually save the city instead of just killing all the bad guys. And then, she’s offered him the tech help that he desperately needed because she wanted to find a way to help others.

Meanwhile, Oliver has helped Felicity gain more confidence in herself. She’s often second-guessed some of her actions or struggled with her nerves, but Oliver often gave her the confidence boost she needed.

Together, they’re an excellent team. I’ve always wanted to see them parent together, but that was never meant to be except for the brief time they worked together to give William a home after his mom’s death. However, they would have made an awesome duo when it came to parenting.

Ending the series finale with the two of them together was all kinds of awesome.

10. Sheila and Joel — Santa Clarita Diet
9. Piper and Alex — Orange Is the New Black
8. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage
7. Titus and Mikey — Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
6. El and Mike — Stranger Things
5. Ollie and Felicity — Arrow
4. Alex and Jo — Grey’s Anatomy
3. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip — The Crown
2. Magnus and Alec — Shadowhunters
1. Claire and Jamie — Outlander

Five TV shows with better action scenes than most movies

5. Arrow (2012-2020) - Out of all of the CW’s action-oriented shows, Arrow offers the most ambitious fight choreography. Stunt coordinator James “Bam Bam” Bamford has had a long and successful career in the stunt world, working first as a stunt double, often for high profile characters such as Mulder on X-Files. His career evolved to include producing, director and stunt coordinating. When he began work on Arrow his leading man told him straight off the bat, “I’ve never punched anybody in my life.” With no martial arts training whatsoever, Stephen Amell was put to work. Bamford chose Arnis, a weapons-based Filipino martial art, for Amell to study. He felt the style would improve Amell’s timing and allow him to keep up with Bamford’s preferred choreography, adding, “One of the things I don’t like about combat on television is that they use old-school, John Wayne-style timing – whereas I like to introduce half beat style timing.”

1. Daredevil (2015-2018)
2. Vikings (2013-2020)
3. Black Sails (2014-2017)
4. Banshee (2013-2016)
5.  Arrow (2012-2020)

The 10 Most Influential Superheroes of the 21st Century (So Far)

2  GREEN ARROW
...
Greg Berlanti brought Arrow to TV audiences in 2012, but initially, the show tried to separate itself from its comic book origins. Not only wasn't the show titled Green Arrow, but the character himself wasn't using that name, going by "The Hood" instead.

In time, Arrow would not only accept its comic book roots, but it would also spawn an entire universe of DC shows that would regularly cross over. Arrow ended earlier this year after running for 170 episodes, but the show's legacy will live on in Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and the other CW/DC shows.

International Women’s Day: Fictional Ladies Who Rock

Jacqueline: Hands down Felicity Smoak from Arrow is my favourite fiction role model. She is strong, smart and supportive, plus she’s a woman in tech! Being a woman in tech, this really resonated with me. That so many women, including myself, adore her, is a testament to her character. While I have been a fan of numerous female characters over the years, Felicity Smoak was the first time I saw someone like me reflected on screen. And she wore lipstick! I love that she wasn’t perfect, she had a lot of heart, especially for Oliver Queen. I could identify so much with her – even though I didn’t save any city – Felicity made being smart cool. It was her intelligence and kindness and her wit that made me not just see myself in her but made it so I wanted to be like her. She inspired me, and I’m sure countless other young women to not hide their intelligence and fight for what they believe in.

Other fictional female characters recognized in this article:
Leia Organa (Star Wars)
Waverly Earp (Wynonna Earp)
Hermione (Harry Potter)
Brienne of Tarth (Game of Thrones)
Lucy (Timeless)
Temperance Brennan (Bones)
Jo March (Little Women)
Olivia Benson (Law and Order: SVU)
Buffy Summers (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer)
Lydia Martin (Teen Wolf)
Kara Zor-El (Supergirl)
Sydney Bristow (Alias)
Tami Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
Feyre Archeron (A Court of Thorns and Roses)
Clarke Griffin (The 100)
Mulan (Mulan)
Claire (Outlander)

The Clock Tower: Let’s Talk About the Amazing Women of the Arrowverse

Who Run the World?
Girls. Doesn’t matter which show of the universe that’s in question. Arrow literally doesn’t work without Felicity Smoak, to the point that she went from a one-off character to the planned endgame almost immediately. Iris West-Allen spent several seasons as the heart of Team Flash and is finally being given the opportunity to do her own thing. It took all of one season of Legends of Tomorrow for creative to realize that Sara Lance needed to be the captain of the Waverider over Rip Hunter. Over on Black Lightning we have the Pierce sisters adding complexity and youth to the world of a once-retired hero.

We’ll get to Supergirl and Batwoman in a bit, because they’re a little different.  None of the women listed above are the primary focus of their respective series, but none of the aforementioned shows would come close to working the way they do with their contributions. And that’s not even considering the Caitlin Snows or Nia Nals of the world. The Arrowverse is, thankfully, very progressive. It focuses on diversity and inclusion and important current events. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s not what a small subset of viewers want to see. Good thing the CW’s slogan is “Dare to Defy”.
