"The Colbert Report": Week of 7/14/14

Recommended Posts

I would have liked to have seen Stephen bring out Hans so we could have seen him celebrate Germany's World Cup victory.

John Boehner and the right wing Catholic douchenozzles on the Supreme Court are why America will never be able to break free of the deathgrip conservatives have on everything in the country.

And I love how Stephen takes apart these ridiculous new products and creates his own fictional products that make about as much sense but arte hilarious to think about.

BEARS! It's been too long since Stephen warned us about these GODLESS KILLING MACHINES!!! But I feel for Pyros, who faces castration. Leave him be people. Try castrating Bill O'Reilly instead.

Loved the interview with Vint Cerf. It sounded more like Al Gore was the mouthpiece of the internet, while Cerf, Robert Kahn, and others did all the hard work.

That was a fun show. Stephen mocking The Enlightenment was perfect. The Threat Down - All-Bear Edition was great. ("Let's Go: Eat Children") The graphic of the bear in the shark suit cracked me up, and it was hilarious when we see Pyros masturbating.

I didn't expect to enjoy the interview as much as I did. Vint Cerf is an excellent evangelist. So great when they put up the pic of the Architect from The Matrix.

What was the deal with those boots Stephen was wearing? Was it something to do with Kinky Boots?

According to an audience member in attendance at last nights show, the boots where a part of a segment on Rick Perry that got cut.

Heads up: Stephen is slated to announce a new Captain America title on tonight's show. Here's the speculation as to who would fill Steve Rodgers' boots, in case you want to get spoiled.

ETA: You can never go wrong with bears . . . though it's tough to beat the footage of bears grinding their backs on trees while stripper music plays. That was awesome. On the flip side, I didn't need to see bear self-manipulation, thank you very much. And I don't really need to think about ursine pole-smoking, either . . . though I can now torture my mother by saying, "Hey, Boo Boo!" so that's neat.

ETA2: Well, the speculation was right about Sam "Falcon" Wilson being the new Cap. Joe Quesada showing up with a pic of "Stephen" as Falcon was a cute gift.

Gore was much more than just talk. He pushed through congress the funding for key bits of infrastructure and research at crucial points, like the NSFnet backbone that Cerf mentioned. One thing I like about Cerf is that he has always squashed the "Al Gore claimed to invent the Internet" lie every time he gets asked about it.

Also, Cerf was a key player obviously, but literally hundreds of researchers made important contributions. I wish Colbert and Cerf had mentioned that, but the format and time limits usually don't allow all the complexities to come through.

How is coal rolling legal? At first I thought it was some kind of cosmetic fake smoke, like the CGI "smoke" coming from Stephen's desk, but when they showed the dude whose face turned black after being sprayed, I would guess it's real. Aren't there laws about emissions? Though I would imagine that the numbers of "coal rollers" is pretty small, considering the $5K price tag Stephen mentioned.

I think there are stricter laws about emissions in states like California, but it's apparently up to each individual state to regulate (or not regulate) it.

Here is a good Slate article about the coal rolling, trow. And here is the EPA's official answer on it. (This TPM article from this month highlights the relevant paragraphs.)
