One Night Ultimate Games: Season 2

Since we're getting back into the swing of things, might as well bring back the One Night side series as well.

For those that are new, or need a refresher:  I, or anyone else inclined to do so, might run a game based on the One Night Ultimate Werewolf series of tabletop games from Bezier Games.   These games differ from the other, "more serious" games in several ways:

  1. It's a more relaxed vibe.  The source is a game meant to be played around a table with friends, and I try to encourage that feeling.  Out-of-game chatter and kibitzing/playing along are permitted.
  2. As the name implies, there's only One Night.  Meaning only One Vote.  So the games are much shorter.
  3. There's usually not a theme or story.  There can be, but it's less a necessity, because...
  4. There's no clues.
  5. Character/Role claiming is not only allowed, but highly encouraged.

Since it's been a while, and there's also a lot of new faces around here, I think, if there's interest, we should start with the latest offering in the series.  Most of the rules are the same, but there's a few changes that I think would go over very well around here.

So, is there interest in visiting Shady Grove, USA, and battling the (One Night Ultimate) Super Villains?

With the regular game set to start on Monday, I think there's going to be enough time to play through if we start on Friday.  So sign-ups will end on Thursday 8pm PDT, with an introductory rules post and PMs to follow shortly thereafter.  And an official start about 24 hours later.

Sign-ups are now closed.  PMs will be coming shortly.  Edit: PMs sent.  Please respond with your actions by 8pm PDT tomorrow.

In the meantime, the rules.

The base conflict in ONUSV is between the Dastardly Trio and SCOOP (the Secret Club Of Overt Protectors).  SCOOP is trying to capture one of the members of the Trio, while the Trio is trying to avoid being caught.  (It's a superhero story; there's no killing.  Think Adam West's Batman.)  Voting can occur whenever, but is not finalized until I call time.  After the votes are final, the person with the most votes is captured.  (If there's a tie, all people in the tie are captured.)  I will then reveal the identity of the captured party (or parties), and declare victory for the appropriate faction.  Then I will reveal the actual events as they happened during the Night.

As with the Werewolf games, there are 3 unclaimed roles in the game.  Certain powers do still interact with those.

Superpowers and the order in which they are used are publicly known and are as follows.  There are a few abilities not used in any of the previous games, and those are marked with an asterisk.

  1. *The Dastardly Trio go first, in a semi-co-ordinated effort.  They all know at least some of what the others do.
    1. *The Temptress can choose any other player and turn them into Henchman #7.  She does not get to find out which hero they were.  Henchman #7 is a standard part of the Villain team, so the Trio will lose if he is caught.
    2. Dr. Peeker may secretly look at the role of any other player.
    3. *The Rapscallion may secretly look at one of the 3 unclaimed roles.
  2. *The Evil-ometer detects villainy nearby (either directly above or below on the list of players (with wrapping).  Not exactly who, but will know the proximity.  The Dastardly Trio will find out who the Evil-ometer is as she does this.
  3. *The Annoying Lad annoys one of their neighbors (either directly above or below on the list of players (with wrapping), as proof of his heroic identity.  The person "annoyed" will know that they were annoyed, but not which of their neighbors for sure did the annoying.
  4. The Detector uses her electromagnetic detection field to determine the role of either one other player, or any two of the unclaimed roles.
  5. Role Retriever retrieves the role of another player.  The other player is now the Role Retriever, and the former Retriever can now see their new role (but they do not get to act as that new role.)
  6. Voodoo Lou does the voodoo that he do so well.  He may look at one of the unclaimed roles.  If he does, he has to give that role to any player, including himself.
  7. Switcheroo may blindly swap the role of any two players other than himself.
  8. Self-Awareness Girl checks her role at the end of the night, so she is aware of who she actually is.

There are two roles in this first game that do not wake during the Night.  And it so happens that they are their own factions.

  • The Mad Scientist did... something terrible.  He wants to be caught (for redemption), and will only win if that happens.  If he wins, the Heroes and Villains both lose.
  • *Family Man wins if none of the members of his family, including himself, are caught.  The other members of the family may be any number on either side of Family Man on the player list (including wrapping), and of any other faction.  Who the family is in relation to the Family Man's position will be public knowledge.  Family Man can win with SCOOP, the Trio, or the Mad Scientist, depending on the final composition of the family.

I'm still waiting on a couple of actions, so I'm extending the deadline.  Not too much though; just 12 more hours.  New deadline is 8am PDT.

Edit:  Under 6 hours to go to the final deadline for actions.  If you do not submit an action to me before then, I will assume that means you are opting not to use your action.  Which is an equally valid choice to using it.

All righty, true believers!  All actions have been decided upon, so let's get the super-shenanigans under way!

The Dastardly Trio have completed their plotting and are evading capture.  It is up to SCOOP to now catch one of the Trio, while not getting one of their own caught instead.  Meanwhile, Family Man just wants his family to stay out of all this trouble, no matter who's side any of them are on.  Meanwhile, the Mad Scientist, who started the day putting on his lab coat backwards...which not coincidentally only allowed him to speak in Mandarin... agreed with his therapist and decided that he needed to be captured today for the sake of humanity.

The roster of players is:

  • SilverStromm
  • Drogo
  • aquarian1
  • raven
  • TheCrazedSpruce
  • MarkHB
  • Machiabelly
  • Lisin
  • CuriousParker
  • SilverStromm...

That is not a typo.  Silver is on the list twice to remind you all that the list wraps around, so Silver is below CP and CP is above Silver.  This is important because of the Family Man and his family.

In this round, the family consists of the Family Man and the 3 players below them on the roster.  This can and will change in future rounds.

Game will end on Sunday night around 8pm PDT, or if it looks like there's no more movement in the votes, whichever comes first.

Excelsior!

I wasn't annoyed but if the annoying lad is in play - was anyone annoyed? Does TAL want to speak up? Even this though, w/o knowing who was swapped, won't be that much help.

What'd you do last Night?

You seem a little...dastardly.

I can say that I wasn't evil at the start of the night, but that at least one of the people @Drogo listed was.

Same for both.  I know I was not evil at the start of the night, and I know one of those people was evil at the start of the night.

OK, full disclosure: I am the Evilometer, and I know that either or both of Spruce and Machia were Dastardly at the start of the night, but I don't know any more detail than that. And my power was the first Heroic one to go off, so that was right after the Trio made their moves but before any of the heavy-duty switching happened.

I also note that Self-Awareness Girl is strangely quiet.

She may not be in play, or she figured out "quiet" is all the rage in here.

@The Crazed Spruce & @Machiabelly - what say you?

I'm a bit reluctant to reveal who I am, because it might paint a target on not only me but other people in the game. And I probably said too much....

So, you're claiming Family Man?

Gonna need some votes on this to make it stick; since:

  • the 2 other Dastardlies aren't going to vote for a member of their faction,
  • Mark isn't going to vote for himself,
  • The Mad Scientist doesn't want anyone else but himself captured, and
  • Spruce can't vote for a member of his Family.

Realistically if all those other roles are in play, they could all pool votes for me now (save for the MS.)

Ok I annoyed Machiabelly but that info is mostly useless... and I’m not fully understanding all the switching but I can get behind this current plan I guess...

2 to DL MarkHB (Drogo, Lisin)
