Good grief, Lis! Can't you be set up to work from home? That's ridiculous!!

Machiabelly, don't worry about being quiet lately - as you say, you're game-dead. :) *slides beer over* Hope RL starts treating you better.

I'm working on the Day story, if I can stop laughing.

I'd like to see more participation from a few of the "Active Accounts." If RL is getting in the way, please let me know. Otherwise, Night might get active.

I wish caprice! I'm a legal assistant so I kind of have to be in the same office as the attorneys because for some reason in 2015 we still have to file original documents for court... I do sort of half work from home in these types of situations but it's still annoying. I'm DONE with winter!

I'm guilty of being the inactive active. My bad. Although...school is kicking me down this week. Not that it's an excuse. I used to be so much better at playing this game. Ok...drinking. Drinking's good.

Day Six:
A back room:
Jim, Ted and Duck were putting the final touches on their plan and Duck had to laugh when he realized that if they were able to pull it off, Lane would be the only account man remaining at what once was Sterling Cooper.

Jim was amused by the idea that Sterling Cooper (he could never bring himself to bother remembering their new name) would be left to rely on an essentially castrated leader.

MoMA:
It had been a risk, but Ted knew that the biggest risks sometimes paid the biggest dividends. It helped to know that both of their wives were on the fundraising committee. Standing near the Pan of Rohallion, Pete Campbell appeared lost in thought.

“Pete.”

Startled, the slender man turned to see Ted approaching with two champagne glasses. He accepted the offered glass and sighed, “You know, every time I see this, I want to make a wish and toss in a nickel.”

Ted laughed. “I don’t know about you, but I’d be wishing to be anywhere else.”

“Oh, yes, I’d rather be anywhere in the world than right here,” Pete agreed. He drank his champagne in two gulps and everything became grey.

On Ted’s plane:
Pete awoke with a start, unsure of where he was but aware that he was cold and cramped. There was also a persistent droning that he slowly realized boded nothing but trouble. When his seat suddenly fell from beneath him, he knew the worst was true... he was on a ridiculously small airplane, trapped with Ted Chaough.

“What the hell?”

“Welcome back, Pete.” Ted’s tone was dry and laced with irony.

Pete spluttered, desperately trying to ask what was going on, where they were, where they were going and why, but just couldn’t put a coherent thought together.

Very calmly, Ted explained that, as a favor to Duck, Pete was being personally escorted to his new career in Dallas. It seemed that Duck had some information about Pete’s past with Peggy that could potentially be damaging to them both. Duck was more concerned about Peggy’s future than Pete’s, so Pete was... invited... to stay out of New York for two years and have no contact with anyone at SCDP, particularly Don and Peggy.

Once they landed and left the small plane, Ted walked Pete to the greeting area attached to the hangar. There were a few other conditions, but the upshot was that if any of them were broken, Pete’s exile would become even worse. “Butte was mentioned, but I thought you should be allowed to work.”

Before he left Pete alone in the nearly deserted building, he added, “There’s a guy I graduated with down here. He said he’ll be happy to have you on his team.” He handed a business card over with directions to the office. “Good luck, Pete.”

And he started the walk back to his plane, ready to grab some coffee and a sandwich before refueling the plane and returning to New York.

“But... but, Ted... I don’t drive!!”

Contract renegotiated:
SVNBob - Freddy Rumsen – recruitable by either – Since being fired by Sterling and Cooper, and let’s be honest, it was a long time in coming, you’ve been at loose ends. You want to get back into the business and would prefer to work with Don, but.... Beggars can’t be choosers, so you’ll join the villains if CGC find you first. Until then, you may vote as you wish but you have no special powers.

TJtrack99 - Roger Sterling – Hero – Lately you’ve been coasting on your charm, which does go a long way, but you’re also a go-getter professionally and personally. Did anyone say “twins?”
Curious Parker - Bob Benson – Villain, investigator – You’re a mystery to everyone around you, making you a perfect choice to sneak around and gather information. With the ability to investigate one player each night you can share that information with your team. You should also know that Freddy Rumsen is looking for work. If you find him first, he’ll become a member of your team.
Machiabelly  - Mrs. Blankenship – Hero – You are an astronaut; the Queen of Perversions; the best secretary Don Draper ever had, and probably the only one he hasn’t slept with besides Peggy. You’ve certainly been around the block with your share of leadership though. Bert Cooper will never forget.
Lisin - Ken Cosgrove – Hero – Accounts man, published author, tap dancer, you are a man of many talents. You’re generally well-liked around the firm and do your job admirably.
BizBuzz - Lee Garner, Jr. – Villain – Now head of Lucky Strike, you are not pleased with Don’s open letter to the media, denouncing tobacco advertising. We may not have seen you on the show for a while, but we know you’re there... waiting.
The Crazed Spruce - Pete Campbell – Hero, investigator – Although you’re a bit of a smarmy weasel, you have an uncanny ability to sense developing trends. You rely on that sense to investigate one player per night. You should also know, you might not like him personally but Freddy Rumsen is looking for work. If you find him first, he’ll become a member of your team.

There are two clues in the story.

As I'm struggling with finding the clues in the latest story, I thought I'd review some of the previous comments which were interesting:

If Biz is a villain then there's some major long-term strategy going on behind the scenes of evil, because she was the third person to vote for CuriousParker. So it would probably mean they've got at least one fairly diabolical vet on their squad to suggest such a thing. I'm still feeling unsettled by stacey for fighting so hard for CP, but that's not evidence. Still though, the double z stuff is crazy suspicious. If Biz is a hero, then hopefully we could use the lynch to target actual villains next time, since it would reveal a whole lot. Sorry, BizBuzz (even though you do seem pretty villainous).

There's deffo strategy going on....let's join each other's lynches would be one lol.

Ok, so I saw a couple of possible clues:  Pete's mind wandering down strange paths(maybe TCS), Duck speaking in puzzles, and pizza being kosher.  Do you guys really think the clue is ZZ, for BizBuzz?

WritingDreamer 'kinda' pointing the finger at TCS and 'kinda' questioning the clues for Biz...nice 'n' vague but still potentially 'sowing' a seed. I also note that WritingDreamer voted to lynch Lisin but neither of the villains.

That TMunz idea is actually really, really interesting.  Not so interesting that I want to switch the lynch, though, just because I'm either reading signs correctly or inordinately credulous.  But for next Day, worth considering.

4 to DL BizBuzz, (SilverStormm, Stacey, Spruce, MarkHB) 3 to overturn the hive

1 to DL SilverStormm, (BizBuzz) 6 just to make things interesting

Updating my voting recap from the previous page:

We can't 100% trust this, but this is the list of the surviving players who didn't make it into the CuriousParker lynch.  Names in italics voted to lynch SVNBob; names in bold didn't vote for either of the first two lynches (CP or Bob); underlined names voted to lynch Lisin.

Athena

jessied112
TMunz
writingdreamer
Dougal

BizBuzz and Silverstormm voted to lynch both CuriousParker and Lisin.  Having said this, I'm still very high on the typewriter clue for writingdreamer even though it happened on the show.

TMunz also voted to lynch both SVNBob & Lis but not CP and jumped on to lynch Biz last. Now we have it confirmed that villains will vote to lynch fellow villains (Biz was the third vote to lynch CP!) - food for thought.

Not sure what to do, both players seem to have clues pointed at them.  How long do we have to DL someone?

Again WritingDreamer dillydallying about lynching Biz (yet the only other person who voted to lynch me was the other 'lynchee', all heroes who participated knew Biz was the OBVIOUS choice based on TCS's info) by acting dubious about whether to vote to lynch me  - based on what 'clues' (plural as in the quote above) precisely? Then, having stated the above, missing the lynch but conveniently showing up less than an hour after the last vote was cast. Hmmmm.

Arrgh there goes our investigator. Now I'm gonna re-read everything Spruce has said. R.I.P. TCS.

I'm not assuming anything because SilverStormm and Biz were at odds last vote but Butte, Montana is located in Silver Bow County. And for the Night story "Dream On" is a famous song by Aerosmith, whose lead, Steven Tyler, is the step dad to Alicia Silverstone. Could be coincidence.

ETA I'm still on board for suspecting writingdreamer. ETA again, now it seems ridiculously obvious that it's writingdreamer. The conversation's about writing a novel and ends with Pete saying "dream on." I mean. Having read back the first few days, I think the silver thing was likely coincidence.

Dougal, I'm wondering the same thing.  I feel so bad for TCS, but honestly you're barking up the wrong tree!  Do you really think the clue is Dream on and writing, would they be that obvious?  I know I haven't been around much, but I've been spending as much time as possible with my boyfriend, who's here from out of town.  I'm sorry, I'll participate in the next DL, as long as it's not me. ;)

The fact that a. I started the lynch against a villain and b. said villain attempted to start a lynch on me should be a pretty decent clue as to my hero status by now....?

Well, sure, when you apply logic of course it makes me look crazy. I may have also found a few things that could point to me but I'm not bringing them up in case I try to use them against me. And I'd prefer to wait until a few more folks have chimed in but it's been a quiet weekend so:

Well, that was quicker than I thought. I have to admit... I've kind of had this scenario in mind since deciding that Duck should be a character in this story.

Night Six:
(Dedicated to all fans of the show who were horrified by a certain event in Season One.)

Duck Phillips was a little worried. Despite his best intentions, it looked as though Cutler and Chaough were pulling away from him and his help. ‘It isn’t fair,’ he thought. Bob was such a bright young man and should have been allowed to go much further. His best days might have been behind him, but Freddy still had a lot to offer; it was simply a matter of figuring out how to utilize his talents.

It was becoming chilly so he tugged his collar up, hoping to keep somewhat warm. He didn’t know why he’d taken this path through the Park. Even during the day, he didn’t like how overgrown it was. There was something about the way the leaves rustled that bothered him, even on a still afternoon.

Sure enough, they were whispering at him now.

‘It’s only dusk, there’s still light out,’ he reminded himself. Except... what was that strange sound? It was almost like someone was panting.

Duck picked up the pace, not quite jogging, but certainly walking briskly. There it was again, but now there was a low growl attached to the rustling.

Suddenly from his left came a reddish blur. “Chauncey?” He gasped in horror.

The now feral Irish Setter was on him, silent as the grave, but just as deadly.

Day Seven:
Talking about the insanity of losing most of the Accounts Department, Stan and Peggy were having a late lunch in Peggy’s office. Her chicken salad was better than usual, until she caught a good whiff of Stan’s meal.

“What the hell is that?”

“It’s a gyro.” Noticing her baffled expression he added, “I just found this little place in Midtown... Web of Pallas, I think it was called.” He took another bite and spoke through his mouthful of food, “It’s really good.”

“It smells horrible.”

***

Jim Cutler came unannounced into Ted’s office, shouting, “I’ve got it! I’ve finally found the way to get Don Draper out of our hair!”

Ted quietly and quickly ended his phone call before asking, “Is this the uppers talking, or are you serious?”

“Faye Miller.”

Ted couldn’t help but be completely confused. Waving at his business partner to take a seat, he opened and closed his mouth, unable to decide how to proceed.

“Draper had an affair with her.”

“So? Lots of men have affairs.”

“Yes, however, this is a special case. If we play our cards right, and I know we can, Draper will be on his way to the location of our choosing. I’m thinking... somewhere south.”

***

“Hello, Francis residence.”

The young voice caused a lump to form in his throat. “Salamander, it’s me.”

“Sorry, Daddy, Mom’s not here.” Sally wasn’t sure why her father was calling after such a long time, but she also knew her mother’s new husband wasn’t going to like it.

“That’s fine, Sally,” Don sighed. “I really wanted to talk to you first anyway.”

Before she could protest, he started telling her about how something had come up with work and that he was going to be working for a different company. “Unfortunately, it also means that I have to move away from New York.”

“But, Daddy, why do you have to move? I don’t understand.”

He couldn’t tell her that CGC was prepared to destroy an old friend’s career if he didn’t leave. Yes, it was blackmail, but Faye knew things about him that he couldn’t afford to have made public. “I can’t explain it right now, Salamander, but maybe someday I can tell you about it.”

“Well, where are you going?”

“I’ve been contacted by another ad group in Atlanta. They have some nice things to say about the area, so maybe you can come visit me on your next school break.”

“Can I travel on my own?” She was always looking for ways to expand on her independence.

“We’ll see about that, Sal, we’ll see. Have your mother call me at home when she gets in.”

“I will, Daddy. I’m sorry you have to move.”

He hung up the phone and poured a long drink.

Gah! Another one bites the dust....

Anybody have any idea how many villains are left, 2 or 3? Now off to hunt for that clue...

Well....that didn't take long:

  • Pallas (Giant), a son of Uranus and Gaia, killed and flayed by Athena
  • Pallas (son of Lycaon), teacher of Athena

and if those 2 aren't enough, this clinches it:

  • Athena, who used the epithet "Pallas Athena"

If Athena isn't a villain after all the above, I give up!

R.I.P. Mark! Dang, good job hanging in there!

That Pallas clue is pretty convincing. I was so disappointed when I couldn't link the Pan of Rohallion to Athena because it seemed like an obvious fit, but I found nada. This Night 5 paragraph also bugged me:

Sitting at his desk, Ted Chaough was reading the sports pages, curious about the final report on the Richmond/Davidson game. The NCAA was gearing up for March Madness and despite having been at the Gardens the previous night, he hadn’t been able to give the game the attention he’d wanted.

I googled both of those teams and their mascots are the Spiders and the Wildcats. Didn't get me anywhere, except for another random cat vaguely pointing at jessied. (Katz's Delicatessen is a famous deli in New York known for its pastrami - take google away from me.) But Athena once infamously turned a woman named Arachne into a spider according to Greek Myth. So. Hmm. I'll probably end up voting for Athena but I'd like to see what some others think first. And re-read stuff with her in mind.

Does anybody left alive watch the show?

Night Seven:
Harry Crane was tired. His company had lost two partners, a somewhat demented secretary and two of the best, although sometimes very annoying, young accounts men he’d had the privilege to know. Sighing heavily, he reached for his phone.

“Cutler.”

“Mr. Cutler, this is Harry Crane of Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce. We need to talk.”

“Who? Why are you calling me?”

Harry was used to being treated like day-old doughnuts. “Mr. Cutler, I am Head of Media Services for Bert Cooper and I thought that, at the very least, it would be the polite thing to let you know that you’ve been stepping on a few too many toes. The Paley family has had it with your grandstanding and CBS is cutting your clients.”

After listening to a lot of spluttering, Harry continued. “You’re more than welcome to retire, sir. That will keep your clients getting their television time and spare your company.”

Jim Cutler let loose with a long, profane tirade before accepting that he had no other choice but to retire. Immediately.

It is a good day for drinking!

It is also a short day for drinking.

And yes, it's short because of the damn migraine.

Day Eight:

Overheard that day at Cooper and Pryce:

Bert and Lane, sipping sake in Bert’s office – “Lane, I’ve been here a long time. Maybe I should just retire and try to relax.”

“No, Bert. We’ve lost so many people lately. Why don’t you stay... see what happens next? I do think this is all about to end soon.”

Stan and Ginz busily smoking in Stan’s office – “I can’t believe we’re being stuck with American Airlines and they won’t let us use the stews in the ads.”

“It’s all about The Man,” Ginz grumbled. “And then Peggy wants us to use tourist traps? Is she serious?”

“You know,” Stan’s mind was already wandering, “my mom wants to go to Italy and see the Trevi and the Villa d’Este, then on to France for Versailles and end up in Spain for the Alhambra and the Generalife. I don’t think any of them will be better than that little Manneken Pis in Belgium.”

Peggy and Harry, discussing the television campaign for Heinz – “Peg, yeah, it’s a great idea, but you have to think of how it will play in Ft. Wayne!”

If you find him first, he’ll become a member of your team.

writingdreamer - Duck Phillips – Villain, protector – Formerly a lecherous, drunken Head of Accounts at Sterling Cooper, you are now a sober head hunter looking for revenge on your former firm. Especially Don. As you provide safety nets for ad men looking for new work, you are able to protect one member of your team each night, although never the same one twice consecutively.

MarkHB - Don Draper – Hero, two-kill – Still a creative master, you’re also one of the luckiest, most resilient bastards around. Your personal life might be in shambles, but there’s always a woman to be found.

Athena - Jim Cutler – Villain – You can only wish you were the Roger Sterling of Cutler, Gleason and Chaough. Well-mannered, successful and charming enough in your own way, you are able to hide your tendency toward chaos. You aren’t above slipping uppers to your team if it means increased productivity. Needless to say, you can’t be trusted.

It is Day and you have 48 hours. Yes, there should be at least one clue in there, but will it be the one I intended? Heaven knows....
