Looking at the Cipher Circle, after this latest episode has cleared up a few of the symbols in the circle.

Firstly, each symbol represents a person, so we're looking for 10 different people.

The Pine Tree - Dipper (hat)

The Chomping Fish - Gruncle Stan (fes)

The Star with the eye in the middle - Gideon (tent)

6 fingered hand - The Author (hand)

Question Mark - Soos (shirt)

Heart with slash - Robbie (hoodie)

Shooting Star - Mabel (shirts)

harder choices here:

Glasses - McGucket (wore glasses before going Unseen)

Bag of Ice - Wendy (every time she's on a mystery hunt, ice is involved)

Horse/Llama - Pacifica (mainly because she's a Northwest, a rather important family to the town, and the only one not in the circle.  Of course it could just as easily be Thompson, Grenda, or Susan.)

Link to comment

The llama is almost definitely Pacifica; there's an identical one in one of the paintings she and Dipper find in the hidden room of her mansion.

The glasses have been long suspected to refer to the mystery character who we now know is also the Author. I am down with McGuckett as a plausible 'next most likely.'

Observation on rewatch: Stan was planning on telling the kids that they're going to hear some bad things about him, some of which are true, before he knew that the government was onto him, when all he was focused on was opening the portal and seeing his brother again. This is, I'm guessing, not going to be a happy reunion.

Just saw this episode after the Author's return, and it got me thinking... what if Soos' dad is the Author?  Someone who Soos has never seen, and only responds by a postcard on every birthday (Who does that any more? Someone with an old soul, or just someone old.)

I think that Stan is the one who's been sending the postcards on his brother's behalf with messages that are short and quick.  It would explain why Stan has kept Soos working there for such a long time, because Stan cares about his family.  It's certainly not his skill, Soos is horrible at repairing things.

The Author disappeared 30 years ago, and Soos is only 22 (July 13, 1990- the show is still in the summer of 2012).

Ah.  I thought the gap was closer.  Shame really.  I had hoped that Soos' dad wasn't a complete jerk.  Being trapped in another dimension does make for a decent excuse.

Days later, I'm still laughing at Wendy checking out Mabel's flirting.

IT'S BACK! Yay!

So Stanley & Stanford (the six-fingered one) have another sibling, Shermey whom I'm guessing is the grandpa.

This episode explains so much, and of courses raises plenty of new ones. We finally get an origin story on Stan...and Stan! And the journals! It was great seeing young versions of lots of the characters like Tyler (who wore boots even as a kid), Lazy Susan before she got the lazy eye (courtesy of Stan's science thing) and the bouncer pre-tattoos.

What will happen now that Grunkle Ford is around? Tune in August 10th for the next episode! (Seriously, this erratic schedule is driving me crazy)

JK Simmons as (The Real) Stanford Pines? Hirsch, you magnificent bastard, I salute you.

We still don't know what's on the other side of the portal, though.

It was enough for Fiddleford to start the Society of The Blind Eye and apparently saw Bill Cipher.

And I was half expecting Ford to shout something along the lines of "and get me pictures of Spider-Man" to the agents. JK Simmons will do that for ya.

Yeah, I was pretty much Dipper when the journals came up.

I've heard that Hirsch plans to have four seasons, so I'm guessing the Stans will patch things up by the end of this one, but will still have a long way to go actually defeating Bill or whatever else is through the portal.

4 seasons? I thought the original plan was 2 seasons and Hirsch wasn't budging for Disney, hence the stupidly long airing of season 2. Can you believe it's only half way through and it's been nearly a year now. Why couldn't the show be made by Netflix, we'd know everything by now.

I recall reading (trying to find the link) that Season 1 was the first half of summer and season 2 is the second.

I know, right!! It's on the day before my birthday! I remember thinking "Hey, a Gravity Falls SEASON TWO episode is out on my birthday" (the Golf War) last year..

I loved the episode though, not another filler episode and we finally got to learn some of the secrets of Stan (and Stan).

The joke about poor Soos and being an underground mole.. poor Soos :P

I'm going to have to watch it again so I can pick up on everythingn (or maybe watch all of it from the beginning so I can remember everything that has happened).

JK Simmons as Grunkle Ford!  This show just gets some great voice actors.  Awesome!

So, Ford is grownup Dipper and Stan-ley is grownup Mabel.  It does explain why Stan-ley gets along better with Mabel than Dipper.  Maybe Ford and Dipper would work well together... with Smart!Waddles.  Sadly, it looks like the Ford character will just disappear below ground for future episodes.  I want him to have more scenes with McGuckett, Wendy, and Soos.  But the big thing, like DIpper, I NEED ANSWERS, Ford!

I loved the Soos and Wendy phone call at the end credits.  Poor Wendy is getting the story from the wrong person.

Does this mean that Gideon is the big bad villain of GF?  Or is Bill the champ here?

The Gravity Falls team is really bringing it this season, especially with the voice cast!

Hello everyone! First time posting specifically on the GF board (otherwise I've been around here and there).

Loved the episode! I love the parallels between the two sets of pine twins. Poor Mabel looked so worried at the end of the episode. :(

Poor Grunkle Stan as well. Yeah, he screwed up plenty of times, but at least he tried to correct some of his mistakes (like the science project, or saving his bro). Ford was definitely harsh with him about having to leave the Mystery Shack at the end of summer.

Yes, Stan does say that Dipper and Mabel are Shermey's grandkids. But that had me confused at first, since Stan never mentions another brother. I just realized they showed Mrs. Pine with a baby in the scene after Stan ruins Ford's chances at college.

This show is pretty intense for a kid's show. I wonder how Shermy fits into the picture.

The next episode is airing August 3rd, not August 10th. My bad.

Does this mean that Gideon is the big bad villain of GF?  Or is Bill the champ here?

It's "The Beast With One Eye." I've seen theories that it could mean Bill...or Stan(ley).

I thought I remember reading that the plan was for three seasons, one for each month of summer. Season 1 was June, and we're currently in July.

Boy, this one was just straight up plot after plot after plot. I did like all of the Stan Pines Products. I'm quite satisfied with all of the information we have now, but it didn't produce as many laughs as usual. I guess that makes sense since we were watching a tragic story, but it didn't feel like an episode as much as a "here's a list of everything you wanted ok thanks bye"

^ I think it's a good mix of both. I still chuckled quite a but through this episode.

I love love love all the parallels between the two sets of pines twins. It's mix and match with them too, which is even greater. Mabel's a lot like Grunkle Stan and Dipper's a lot like Ford, but on the other hand, Dipper's a lot like Stan and Mabel's like Ford too. They're a good mix of both and it makes them unique from the original pines.

This episode was sort of weird, in that I'm sure it was awesome for the people who don't live on the internet, but for those of us who do the fandom got so much of it right that it almost felt like we didn't learn anything.

One thing I find interesting is that I saw so much speculation that Mabel trusting Stan over Dipper was going to be the final "I can't trust anyone" straw that would push Dipper over to the dark side. But he's totally thrilled by how everything's played out so far, and it's Mabel who's suddenly afraid that maybe this was a bad idea.

I live on the internet and liked it. I don't follow absolutely everything but I think it was good to finally get the information we've been waiting for this season. I'm hoping the brothers learn to get along again and maybe Dipper and Mabel will bring them back together.

I re-watched today and well, I fell asleep in the first watching, which I know is crazy! So glad I went and watched it again when I was more awake.

We finally get to know the author of the journals, and he doesn't want to talk about all the weird stuff. Not surprised with that.

"Take it hard. Take it hard and serious." So wrong if that were ever taken out of context.

I'm also not surprised that Soos (plus Blubs, Durland and Tobey) is a FCLORPer (Foam and Cardboard Legitimate Outdoor Roleplay). I loved that Tobey would totally be the lame "fireball" spellcaster guy.

"Don't mock our fantastical monetary system!" Academy Award Winner JK Simmons, everyone!

Personally I think Regular Show pulled off the "real-life DnD" plot better. But hey, this one has Weird Al as an evil nerdy wizard!

Mabel: He had a secret twin brother?! That's the surprise twist we've been waiting for?

Soos: I predicted that like a year ago.

LOL! I would seriously watch a Duck-tective spin-off.

Great episode!

Ducktective is great too. So many shout outs to the fandom. Lol.

That LoZ Navi bit was great.

They also nailed the 90s well with the whole "cooler! Hipper! More extreme!!" aspect. I remember those days.

Ford and Dipper were adorable and I'm glad that Dipper has a fellow nerd to bond with, but it was a big no-no asking Dipper to keep a secret from Stan and Mabel.

Where was Candy????

I'm glad Mabel seemed to recognize (at least by the look on her face) that she can be a bit too hardcore when it comes to teasing Dipper when he mentioned it. Maybe she'll try to tone it down a bit from now on. Who knows. I still love her though.

Weird Al was great.

I love Stan and Mabel. They're so alike! I always get a warm fuzzy feeling when he calls Mabel "sweetie." I loved the bit when Stan reassured Mabel that the ogre was magic/etc so he probably didn't actually die, but then agreed with Grenda to take it to their graves. Lol.

And classic Stan cheating. That's certainly one way to win.

Soos and his group :).

I also found it interesting that they say "great uncle Ford" rather than Grunkle Ford.

Fun episode overall.

^ that part was awesome. stan literally fulfilled the dreams of a zillion LoZ fans.

I'm curious: just like the growing rift between Dipper and Mabel, some of the GF fandom on tumblr seem to be taking sides defending their recent behavior in this episode.

there's plenty of people who are aware of the complexities of the characters and their interactions, so many see the fault in both parties (which I think most of the fandom does) too, but...

Has anyone here taken sides on Dipper/Ford vs. Mabel/Stan?

Edited by HoodlumSheep

I haven't. I'd generally say I prefer Dipper/Ford because if I knew Mabel and Stan they would drive me crazy but I actually like the rivalry and how each party is taking it.

I am entertained by both and, as long as it doesn't cause another big issue between each set of siblings, am happy to see where it goes.

I think I prefer Mabel/Stan. I find their interactions adorable. I also like their selfish tendencies (which people seem to be attacking Mabel for currently on the internet--she's 12 people!!!) and general zaniness.

Ford and Dipper are adorable too, and we've only seen one episode of them interacting together, so maybe I'll grow to love them more.

I'm having fun reading people's thoughts on which twin they think will be the cause of the great rift occuring in their relationship. I can honestly say that if that happens, I'm totally fine with it being either Dipper or Mabel (or both), and I won't love them any less for it.

It'll just add to the complexity and awesomeness of their characters.
