Pretty much everyone in Hawaii is Auntie or Uncle if they're older than you.

In the first few episodes Kono called Kamekona "uncle". I don't know if they were aging the character to near the actress actual age when they dropped it.

I don’t understand people’s hang ups about children calling non blood relatives ‘aunt’ or ‘uncle.’  My friend’s daughter calls me Auntie. Growing up I had several ‘aunts’ who were really just close personal friend’s of my parents. What’s the big deal?

Yes, Uncle and Auntie are terms of respect for elders in Hawaii, nothing to do with bloodlines.

Maybe I am the only one bothered by Lou's referral to the corpse as "a Mr. Potato Head", the term from his Chicago days. Here we have an innocent (as it turns out) victim in a murder, and that certainly isn't a term of respect to the dead. I'm not that sensitive of a person, but I am surprised no one called him out on it. Given all of the various "burial of the ashes at sea" ceremonies that they have had, I would think someone on the team would be a bit more respectful. I didn't think it was a funny line, either.

I haven't researched the illegal sand trade in Hawaii, but if what McGarrett said is true that the dredging in the ocean is legal, I can't believe that would be good for the native plants, animals and corals?

The conclusion on the double homicide seemed to happen quickly as well, wonder how much was cut out of the episode to make it fit. Seemed kind of rushed at the end to me. I'll put this on my skip list when I get the Season 9 DVD series.

The burial storyline was well done - I'm not usually emotional with this stuff but I had a lump in my throat during the letter voiceover. And yeah, I've known, let's say "average" bodied friends who have tried to enlist and couldn't hack boot camp. Why did they feel the need to throw the panic attack in? I did appreciate Junior saying that not everyone is cut out for the service, and that's totally OK. Heck, I wouldn't be! But respect 100%.

The other plot was good up till we had 2 sets of feet, and Grover and Tani investigated a house, and all of a sudden I was totally confused. Then, it was over, and involved an affair and a hitman? Lots of great McGarrett/Danny scenes (loved all the boat stuff); horrible storytelling.

But, at least we got Eddie!

My friend's brother enlisted right out of high school and he wasn't as big as Jerry, but he wasn't really someone you could imagine even walking an obstacle course, much less running one. I can't remember which branch of the service took him, but they immediately put him on a diet. He even had to wear a badge that read, "Half-Rations," so that when we went through the food line, he couldn't cheat on his diet.

This show is so ridiculous at times that I admit I watch it for the laughs, *especially* when they think they're being so serious.

Then once in a while they do "actual serious" like the soldier's remains being escorted home, and I have to assume that they take particular care to get the details right on stuff like this.  Watching that storyline was something like watching an educational film.  Very informative, and again, I assuming quite accurate, because they'd catch hell for it otherwise.

The story with the feet... whoa.  And yes, it did wrap up very quickly.  A couple lines of dialogue with the husband and a background shot of the hitman, and that's all we needed I guess.  But that's okay.  More time for the other story, which was better anyway.  I too got a little choked up during the reading of the letter.

I think Peter Lenkov, the Creator & Showrunner (& oftentimes Writer), has said they run all the military stuff (like the different ceremonies & things related to the Navy—remains repatriation, the Pearl Harbor Attack, etc.) we’ve seen through, & get technical assistance from, at least the now Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam there in Hawaii, if not the Defense Department & the appropriate military branch there in Washington. Since Honolulu, in particular, is a big “military town” (like the entertainment industry is the big thing in LA) they try to be respectful & accurate when they depict military life.
