"What kind of act is this?!"

Liked how things ended, with Jimmy finding his friends again and Maya reconnecting with her dad and step mom. I hope he shows up every once in awhile, even if he is just calling in on Skype. "Keep it in the subtext!"

Fun start to the season.

YAY for Jimmy's old punk band! :D I hope we get to see them again; but if not, I just think it's cool that they're the ones who ended up helping the DiMeos get their house back (since Martin turned out to be not as well-to-do as Maya had thought). His plot with his new friend, Rowan, was cute too; oh, and that picture of young Jimmy was actually John Ross Bowie playing with his old band, Egghead:

The JJ/Kenneth plot was so sweet... I had wondered how they would address the fact that Kenneth won't be able to work as JJ's aide once the boy graduates; they may not know yet what their next moves will be, but JJ has some reassurance now that they'll still be friends. :)

Why am I not surprised that Ray would be the one to spill the beans to Martin about his family needing money for a house? xD What I did find a tad surprising, though -- particularly in light of s.2's Thanksgiving episode, in which he was willing to do anything to impress his mom's pretentious mother (even have his then-girlfriend pose as his sister) while Dylan couldn't be bothered to learn about soccer for the occasion -- was that he would have so much trouble connecting with Maya's other relatives while Dylan was able to win them over with little-to-no effort (primarily through her strong resemblance to a deceased, beloved family member who was photographed with a tiger).

I had mixed feelings about this episode. I loved the Beefeater opening and Jimmy making a friend. I didn't like the JJ and Kenneth plotline since it could have happened back home. JJ went to meet his grandfather and had very few scenes with him that's a mistake. I'm sure they will figure out how to have Kenneth be JJ's aide in college.

I liked this episode. With funding for Kenneth, it'll be more paperwork, but the state will pay for some of Kenneth - not nearly as much as JJ needs, but they will pay. Well, while JJ is in college, he can be a client of vocational rehabilitation, who can pay for Kenneth while JJ is going to and from school, and during his classes, and the state will probably pick up the rest under a different program (Probably classify Kenneth as a PCA?) which would hopefully be enough for Kenneth to earn what he is earning now - but I wonder if he is still employed by the district, just moved from groundskeeper to para? Giving up the benefits of working for a school versus going out on your own is rough, but he would be willing to do it for JJ

As a UK viewer of US sitcoms, virtually every one that has sent it's cast over here has produced appalling, cringe making episodes (I'm looking in your direction, Friends). 'Speechless' didn't! It was fine. No jokes about bad pubs, bad food, soccer, bad teeth  etc..... The British cast didn't play awful caricatures.  Well done!

And this was easily the most I've enjoyed John Cleese in over a decade. His last half-arsed attempt at lying by claiming he had cancer made me laugh out loud.

Another thing... I thought I was gonna be so disappointed that the DiMeos simply got to move back into their house -- rather than (as I had hoped) finding a similarly cheap crap-hole house in the same school district -- since it would've been too similar to what 'Fresh Off the Boat' did for its s.3 finale / s.4 premiere. But honestly, I was okay with this; unlike the FOTB plot, which ultimately seemed to have so little impact on the characters that it might as well have not even happened, the 'Speechless' plot was a sweet and fun way to develop Maya and her relationship with her father (who I hope we'll eventually see again -- perhaps at JJ's high-school graduation?), and to get Jimmy to reconnect with his old bandmates (whom I'd been wanting to know more about since the 'Star Wars' ep in the middle of s.2, when Maya first mentioned something about Jimmy having had a band). :)

Also, still no mention of where Pepper was during the London trip, unless I missed something; but I assume he could've stayed with Mr. Powers, who (as I recall) was in on JJ's plan to surprise his family with the dog at Christmas as part of his film-project gift to them...

It also moves the DiMeos to home owners which is a slightly different can of worms which I feel like is something that Speechless might deal with.   The Huangs went from renting to owning as well but they aren't in the margin in the same way so having a landlord fix the AC isn't as big a deal for them as it will be for the DiMeos when everything goes terribly, terribly wrong and it is all on them.

Can a British loan officer provide an American mortgage?

I think the band friends were back home in America. Jimmy just decided to reach out to them. I think?

That was my thought too.

I still wonder where they would get a down payment from, but ok, that part makes sense.

The bank will also require homeowner's insurance.

Homeowner's insurance payments can be rolled into the escrow account and added to the monthly mortgage along with the yearly property taxes and the mortgage insurance, which is required if they have less than 20% down payment.  I think it's still possible to buy a house without a down payment (I did, almost 30 years ago, when it was like pulling teeth to get a mortgage), but you get better rates if you have at least 20% down.
