It gives off a very This Is Us vibe (I'm convinced the same people who make the TIU trailers made this one; it has the same sappy music and same flashy backgrounds in between the shots of the show). Is it a good thing that it's airing on another night, or not? Will it stand on its own or will the TIU comparisons be too much for the show? I really liked the trailer and I'm definitely tuning in, but I think that it could go either way for this show. Not because it doesn't look good, of course, but because it's going to rely heavily on the timing.

Yeah, it definitely feels like the TIU vibe was intentional...which I'm not happy about.  From what I've read, this show is supposed to be more "comedic" than TIU...which, if true, I am happy about.  And, so far, no one in the cast has told me I'm going to cry, so that's a plus.  But, I'll admit I'm just here for David Giuntoli.

I'm totally here for David Giuntoli. After having to stop watching Grimm due to its very poor writing and plot arcs, I've missed seeing David around. 

I think it has the potential to do really well. I've already read that the show has been sold global rights to CBS Studios International, which means it'll be distributed internationally. ABC is clearly trying to capitalize on the This Is Us success and I have a good feeling that it could do well. The show is going to air while TIU is starting its third season, it's on a different (later) night, AND if it does have more comedic moments, then that'll at least differentiate it from the schmaltzy NBC hit.

My friend, we are in the same boat--this is the second show I'll be watching just to watch actors I had to quit watching in the disaster that was Grimm. 

I do worry, though, that from what I've heard of this show, that there isn't that much actual *story* going on.  Of course, that didn't stop TIU (at least up until the middle of this past season, when I quit watching).  It's hard to tell from a trailer, so I am more than happy to be wrong on this count.  Still, this is the show I'm most excited about next season so I hope it all works out.

Oh, and I am glad to hear that we already know how the guy dies.  That already puts this one a good season and a half ahead....

and also Ron Livingston and Romany Malco, so I'll probably give it at least a 2-episode chance.

I just saw the trailer for this and I only watched it because of Roday and Giuntoli. I hope that the trailer isn’t entirely indicative of the show because it seemed to be firmly riding the emotionally manipulative train much like This Is Us, a show I quickly bailed on. The themes touched on seemed quite depressing: suicide, cancer, depression, infidelity. I’m trying to imagine this having a comedic vibe that works. I’ll give it a shot but I’m concerned with it’s obvious desire to emulate TIU in the trailer.

I caught the trailer out of the corner of my eye this evening and thought: Huh. Is James Roday in the new season of This Is Us?

I’m old, I got The Big Chill vibe from the promos.

I’m hesitant to get involved with this because, well, it’s ABC (Already Been Cancelled) network.

Well, it has been described as The Big Chill meets This is Us, which kind of pisses me off.  If I wanted to watch The Big Chill, I would watch that (I haven't seen it in decades...and haven't tried to watch it again).  And, if I wanted to watch This is Us, I would watch This is Us.  And I don't watch This is Us.

Still, I hope that all that talk is just a hook because I think this show *could* be good.  I've read from people who have read and/or seen the pilot that it is great, but the marketing is making me apprehensive.

The Big Chill was smart enough to NOT show us suicide Alex in flashbacks.  He was originally played by Kevin Costner, but was cut out in the final edits.  This one appears to show suicide whats-his-name, so I guess that's who we get the moralizing and wise council from.  

I can't stand TIU, and Ron Livingston has done ONE role that I liked, in "Office Space".   So I'm torn on whether to bother or not.  

Depends on how much ABC beats us over the head with their advertising campaign.  I've skipped shows just because I got so sick of their preliminary ads.

There has been some pushback about how the show is handling suicide.  I've read some survivors post that they are very concerned that this show (I guess like 13 Reasons Why--a show I haven't watched, so--disclaimer--I'm basing this on their comments) shows suicide in an almost positive light.  I guess it's "This guy kills himself and his friends are all ultimately better for it."  Now, I don't know if that is what is going to happen.  I will say that the ads support that suspicion, though.  And, if so, that is definitely problematic.

I seriously doubt they're saying their lives are better after their friend/husband/whatever kills himself.  I'm sure it'll be framed more along the ways that these people learn how to continue living their lives without the person.  Is the push back from people who have seen the pilot episode, or are they basing it on the preview?  Because if they haven't seen it, it's really unfair to make such a claim without seeing, at the very least, the first episode.  Also, I don't agree that 13 Reasons Why shows suicide in a positive light, but that's a discussion for another thread.  ;)

1. James Corday

2. Ron Livingston

3. Allison Miller (took me a minute to place her from Selfie- RIP)

4. David Giuntoli (I only watched about 3 episodes of Grimm but he is nice to look at)

I've seen them in enough things to recognize they are weak actors, so it bums me out a little.

 I've seen comments on FB and other such social media sites, so my assumption is that it is from the preview.  It could be unfair--I agree judging an entire show by its preview is not fair--but the concerns are out there and it may cause some to reconsider watching the show.  I do think that if it does seem like it is romanticising (for lack of a better word) suicide, it would probably course correct fairly soon.  At least  I hope so.

I forgot this was the show that decided to roll the dice on recasting someone affiliated (formerly?) with a sex cult around the time the leaders are on trial.

Kind of odd choice from of ABC/Disney considering Roseanne and James Gunn.

I gave up on This Is Us when I realized the show thought it was its job to try and make me cry every episode.  I don’t have time for that.   This looks interesting enough that I’ll guve it an episode or two but if it makes me cry too much it’s done and I don’t care who is on it.

This popped up in my IG feed today (I'm not sure why...I don't follow the person who posted it, but whatever...)

 

And this is my biggest irritation right now with this show (which is still 3+ weeks away from even airing).  Why is everything about it derivative?  It's like This is Us!  It's like The Big Chill! It's like 30Something! (Apparently, that show was a little before my time, so I'm taking their word for it).  Right now, my only desire for this show is to break away from all of these comparisons in the first episode and do its own thing.  Normally, I'd give a show a little more leeway, but this is getting ridiculous.  It's like they are trying to win the re-boot contest by rebooting everything in one show.
