Ratings and Scheduling

Does anyone know if any Canadian network airs this show?  I PVR it from ABC from the closest American city, but I'd prefer to watch it on the CTV, GlobalTV or CityTV website when I am on the go.

I checked during Season 1 and no Canadian network picked it up, so I was wondering if it was still the case.  Canada purports to be multicultural, yet none of the networks felt Canadians would watch this?  That's kind of disappointing.

Why is the season ending so early this year?  Are they just not taking any breaks?  Does it hurt the show not to season finale in May?

I know absolutely nothing about TV production but wasn't Constance going to be in a movie Crazy Rich Asians? Maybe that has something to do with the earlier ending.  I also noticed that they started the new episodes the first week of January, which I don't remember them doing it so early before.

It looks like that movie filmed last year, from April into the summer.

"Rosanne" is premiering in the 8pm timeslot on Tuesday March 27, which moves "The Middle" into the 8:30pm timeslot (which is where "Fresh off the Boat is currently airing).

It's probably partly because networks want to have less repeats so they order more midseason shows. There is also the fact that networks seem to cancel less shows during the season. This season The Mayor is the only ABC comedy that was removed from the schedule while there are still unaired episodes. More shows now get to at least air their full episode order even if ratings are low. In the past it was more common for low-rated shows to be taken off the schedule while there were still unaired episodes and midseason shows would take their place in the schedule. Since most low-rated shows now get to air their full seasons it means that some shows have to end early to make room in the schedule for the midseason shows.

The ABC TGIF comedy block was a successful programming strategy for the network for many, many years.

1989-2000 was a different era, though.

They tried to go back to TGIF in 2003, but it wasn't as successful, and they stopped trying in 2005.

These days, families won't necessarily watch network TV together on Friday nights, what with so many streaming services where they can watch stuff whenever (if they even watch TV together at all).
