S05.E01: A Fog That Won't Lift

Recommended Posts

Why is Katee still limping? I know she had hurt her foot at the end of last season, but surely they didn't start filming this season immediately after?

I sort of remember as well as Walt what happened last season.  That phonecall.........

But why leave him and take her????

I think Longmire has really been excellent with continuity.  Vic hurt her ankle in one of the last episodes of Season 4.  But remember that this season opens on what is essentially a day after the final episode (What Happens on the Rez) so she should still be limping since in terms of the story only a day has gone by.

I like it when they follow through with these things accurately and pay attention to details. Like in Season 1 when the Bronco is wrecked in the pilot and stays all scraped up for several more episodes instead of miraculously returning all spiffed up the next day.  That's real life!

I'd just watched the last episode of Season 4 and rolled right into Season 5 a few seconds later, so it made perfect sense that Vic was still limping. I agree @Kohola3, Longmire has great continuity. Though they tend to give them superhuman endurance (Henry and Walt's ability to not just function but climb mountains and such with bullet holes in them), they also show bruises and cuts healing in an appropriate amount of time between episodes.

I'm not sure I like the direction Mathias is taking, I was enjoying his growth and complexity last season. But it's just the first episode, so maybe it's not quite what it seems.

Ferg's interaction with the woman at the hospital was fun, and I'm hoping there'll be a little bit more of her and Ferg in the show.

I agree and I admit I am more interested in the Standing Bear developments this season.  It will be tough for him to work for Nighthorse AND be Hector for Mathias along with working under Malachi plus supporting Longmire.

I had hoped Mathias would head more toward being a mellower critter but so far it only looks like he's delighted to have something to hold over Henry.

I am really glad they include those recaps for Netflix series, because it feels like its been ages since I watched the last season. I forgot how much I missed this show and the characters. Last season was wonderful, so I hope this season keeps up the momentum.

Same here. I liked that they added more perspective to the supporting characters, especially Mathias, last season, and I hope that this season does not go back on that.

Also, I got some dark laughs out of Walt passing out in that office, and Vic thinking he is doing a "we need a distraction!" thing, instead of actually being passed out! Whoops!

When Walt spit his pill out the window, I yelled, "What are you? Five years old?!" so I loved that Vic stopped the car, backed up, (miraculously) found it on the ground, shoved it back in his mouth, made him show under his tongue so she knew he had swallowed it this time, and then said, "If you're going to act like a four year old, I'm going to treat you like a four year old."

Hee, like Vic, I thought Walt was faking so they could get the files. When Cady said they had to return the files, I was trying to imagine what kind of ruckus they would cause so that they could get the files back into the office (since they obviously couldn't stroll in with a box of files and admit that they had stolen them).

I wish I had at least watched the last episode of season 4.  I was lost.  Do we know/remember why Cady had a bruise on the side of her head?

I agree; I almost started to like Mathias last season.  One thing I do miss from last season and the start of this one is the Walt/Henry friendship.  It seems like they've been at odds with each other for awhile and I don't like that.

I've pretty much always liked Mathias, even more than Walt.  ;)

He's intriguingly mysterious -- Good guy? Bad guy? Situational ethics?

But in the end, always pocket-sized sexy.

In the opening moments of Season 5, when Cady finds Walt he is thrashing around and hits her. Thus the bruise.

I've always hated that thing that characters do where they are seriously injured and meant to be in hospital but decide that they know better than the doctors and leave to go do something that they are not physically capable. I was glad when Walt passed out and was obviously struggling. That was realistic. I get why he felt he had to try and find his girlfriend but he has two competent deputies and he could have coordinated with them from a hospital bed. To me it says that he doesn't trust their abilities.

I watched the first few minutes of the episode.  I realized I was lost and went back and watched the final ep of season 4.  I am glad I did.  It made a lot more sense to me.

I am just glad this show is back on.  Netflix does a better job of the show than A&E did.

Absolutely.  Plus the fact that the time isn't limited to fit into a TV hour makes a huge difference.  No need for deleted scenes that can be important plus more time for the character development.

I like Walt and Donna together and want more of that.

Yes, I did rewatch the last episode in Season 4, thinking that would help. It didn't. Maybe watch the last 4 epis in Season 4?

I do love this show, regardless. Happy to see it back. I have only watched the first episode,  so far. Hope they don't fall into the "female cop falls for her boss" trope.

The Season 4 episodes that introduce Donna and those that are about Gab are really kind of key pre-watches for the new season, I think.  They set the groundwork for Mathias' threats to Henry as the new Hector and Donna's involvement with Walt.

And I 'm with you, OoogleEyes, I definitely do NOT want Vic and Walt together.  I think Donna and Walt are a good match both intellectually and emotionally.  Vic just seems like a teenager lusting after an older guy;  I don't see them as soulmates.

I’m way behind and finally just catching up, and I do love this show, and Robert Taylor is super dreamboaty. But...yes! I hate that the show went here. Vic is way too young, I like Donna a lot, and there’s zero chemistry between Walt and Vic. When Cady and Vic were leaning over Walt in the hospital just after Vic kissed him, it was super skeevy. Vic and Cady are the same age!

I like Walt and Vic together romantically, but I didn't like her kissing him when he was in the hospital because it felt like a cheat. It was a way for them to kiss without the writers committing Walt to a relationship. However, I did laugh when he fainted and love when Vic confronted him about spitting out the pill.

I thought the kidnapping of Donna was a lazy and useless story. I wanted Walt to have crime-free normal relationship drama with Donna.

I didn't like Mathias blackmailing Henry, but at least he didn't arrest and charge him.

This show has always sought to bring attention to current social issues.  I think this story was in line with that although we don't see it until the next episode.

I gagged when Vic kissed Walt.  That was so totally uncalled for.  And if it were the other way around it could be construed as sexual assault.

I don't see that is at all. I don't consider Vic kissing Walt sexual assault and if Walt had kissed Vic under those circumstances, I would never consider it sexual assault either. Walt and Vic are dancing around each other their romantic feelings for each other. IMO, it is pretty much understood that Vic has been waiting for Walt to finally make a move and it will just be a matter of time before he does.

Legally it making advances on a drunk or unconscious person is a criminal offense in many states.  Just kissing would probably not be but it doesn't take much for the law to be invoked.

In the context of Vic and Walt's relationship, I don't think that for a second that either of them would consider that kiss sexual assault no matter which of them did the kissing because they are in love with other.

VIc is like a teenage girl mooning over her favorite teacher.  Walt didn't even share with her anything personal.  I don't see love in that relationship at all.  Or chemistry, for that matter.  He let the Doc wear his hat, never did that with Vic.

I don't agree. Chemistry is subjective and I have always seen it between Walt and Vic. I also believe that the show has been setting up Walt and Vic's romance from the beginning. Walt doesn't share his feelings much, but it has always been obvious to me what he hasn't said and what he has done showed that he was in love with Vic. She has simply been more overt with her feelings, but Walt has occasionally been petty and jealous like a teenage boy mooning over the popular girl is school when it comes to Vic and other men.

I don't get why Walt putting his hat on Donna's head is significant of anything. I could easily counter that he covered Vic with his jacket and never did that with Donna, but I don't think that means anything either. What matters is that he and Donna ended their relationship because it was nothing and was going nowhere. Anyway, we have different opinions and are never going to persuade each other so I am stopping here as this is one of the forum rules..
