Overnight oatmeal!  I made some for the 1st time last night, it was blueberry-banana and I was surprised at how much I liked it, especially since I am NOT an oatmeal person.

I discovered steel cut oats myself for the first time last year, and haven't looked back. Overnight oats are so easy ( directions on package) and yummy!  I like mine with brown sugar and a little bit of maple syrup or bananas cooked right in it.

I've been doing overnight oats for a few weeks with this recipe. It's super easy to prepare and is quite cheap if you have a good bulk foods section at the grocery store:

http://minimalistbaker.com/peanut-butter-overnight-oats/

I just pinned this one, looks REALLY good!  I just might add a sprinkle of dark chocolate chips I have left over from my Christmas baking.

I haven't ever had a "real" weight problem, but when I get that little extra weight on that makes me think of my fat jeans I go to the chicken.  Chicken is all I eat for 3 weeks--breakfast, lunch, dinner.  Of course cannot give up my coffee and tea (with splenda).  The last 7 days I will begin to add fresh veggies like broccoli or cauliflower but the first 14 days chicken is my only food.   Plus ketchup and mustard.

I was about to say this! Or baked oats! Sooooo yum. If you google "slimming world recipes", not sure if SW is about in the states but it's plan that you follow. It has loads of recipes with healthy "tweaks" so you can basically eat what you want. There's so many breakfast ones!!

Ever tried protein pancakes? You can make loads in one batch, seperate into tubs and heat them in Chef Mike. (Microwave) with fruit and yoghurt. yummmmm

also anyone looking into slimming world, DO IT. I stuff my face from dawn til dusk and still lose weight at the end of the week. Good times!

Oh that's grim ☹️ Bless you. Hopefully they help! I've heard about what a pain thyroid problems are ☹️

My friend bought some cheap diet pills off the Internet, but didn't realise she'd just been sold laxatives. Long story short 2 bottles of Chardonnay later she shit herself. Had to hose her off in the garden. Memories.

omg that's a hilarious story, so bad for her but yet so funny.

I'm reading reviews of it now to know what to expect. At least he understood that I've been exercising more than ever and the weight just doesn't come off.

Do you have a good recipe for protein pancakes?  Keep in mind I will likely eat it with eggs, spinach, and some turkey bacon so not sure if that defeats purpose???

Random but has anyone else heard the preaching of:

1) a spoonful of apple cider vinegar a day keeps the doctor away and helps you look 20 years younger?

2) start everyday with a warm glass of water with fresh lemon squeezed in it to cleanse out your body

3) a spoonful of turmeric (blech!) makes everything run smoothly

Any truth to any of the above?  My mom also said to stop eating anything cold (like ice cream) but I'm not sure that's possible ...

Ah, girl. I feel you so hard. You have no idea how much I understand. I've heard of these things. It's all bullshit. All of it. It's a multi BILLION dollar industry. Cleanses, juice fasts, pills, blah blah blah. Fewer calories, better quality of calories and movement. CONSISTENTLY. That's it. That's all there is to it.

I understand, god knows I do. I wasted more time looking for an easy way out than it would have taken to just get off my ass, make healthy meals and exercise. I have PCOS and a TON of debilitating digestive health issues (not to mention I Just turned 45), it's an uphill battle. Everyone has SOME reason/excuse that tells them "it's too hard". It's just HARD. Losing weight is hard. One day I said to myself, if you want it bad enough, you'll do the work and create some tools in your life that work for you. I told myself "Stop trying "tobeyoungagain" (wink wink) and reinvent yourself NOW!! You're still sucking air girl! Get real, adjust what's important and count your blessings. What CAN you do? Who are some role models your age that rock your socks off to motivate you? Start where you are". It's a fight every. single. day. but once you see that first pound come off, once you start seeing the rewards, once you wake up in the morning to workout and think about that fatass at work that you can't stand that's still sleeping in while you're working your tired, crabby ass off, it starts to click. Whatever motivates you. Some days, that's all you've got. LOL. Moral superiority for thirty minutes on a stationary bike, sister.  HA! I feel your pain. Now, I'm going to go click on a DCC rerun and bike ;-). If you need an "accountabilibuddy" as the great, beloved wonderful Schramm said, I could use one too, just PM me anytime ;-)  xoxo

xoxo you!  thanks!  I definitely have the working out part down but the eating ... well, let's not talk about that shall we (eating a big arse Tupperware of chili mac as we speak .. and thinking about what sweet thing to wash it down with).  I was just thinking there would be little things I could do to help make myself healthier and to fight off the even threats like cancer (scary).  But yeah .. maybe it's about eating more plant based diet and less of my current meat-based diet.  Bacon so gooooooodddd though.  Pork ... mmmmmm

Hmm my protein pancakes are sweet cos I have them with fruit and yoghurt but I mash a banana, 2 eggs, some almond milk and half a scoop of vanilla protein powder. It sounds horrendous from the ingredients but they're really good. Don't know if they'd go well with savoury stuff cos the banana makes them sweet

Oh wait, one thing I was going to say about apple cider vinegar is that it does really help my digestive system. Hence, I feel better, hence, I feel like moving more. I don't know if that helps at all, but who knows, it may have a similar effect on you? It doesn't "make you lose weight" per se-at least not for me, could for others I suppose. That stuff is like drinking gasoline though!!

wow I commend you for doing that!  I use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and witch hazel thingy to make a toner for my face.  That's about all I can muster right about now... and even then, I've been super delinquent in doing it everyday haha.  I've started reading all these "natural" blogs so am now fascinated by all these natural health and beauty boosters!

I read a discussion of the hot water in the morning thing, and the consensus seemed to be that it's just a good way to start hydrating for the day. So not magical, but probably still a good idea.

My friend & I used to go to the cafeteria at work and have our hot water with lemon, which we affectionately referred to as an "old lady drink." :)  My uncle swore by it as his "morning constitutional," but I never really saw any benefit to it except as a different way to get in a serving of water.

Random recipe request .. I bought 2lbs of beef short ribs when they were on sale at WF and I have no clue how to cook them.  I found a recipe using a crockpot (love) but it called for 6lbs of short ribs and supposedly if you cut the ingredients to accommodate a smaller size meat, it dries out the dish.  Aikes ... anyone have a good and relatively tried / true recipe to share?

I would braise them in hot oil after a dredge in flour (after applying salt and pepper).  Then brown some flour in the drippings and get a gravy going--onions, garlic (can't ever go wrong with onions and garlic).  I'm not much of a crock pot person but if you use a pressure cooker they will be tender in 10 minutes.

The only thing I've used apple cider vinegar for is to take care of a plantar wart that was harassing me for years.  Finally, I threw caution to the wind and tried it.  I took half a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar, taped it to the bottom of my foot (some sites say use duck tape, but I found a tape that seems to be the generic version of what is used with IV lines and is found in the grocery store), put a plastic bag over the top (to stop any drips or stains), and then a pair of anklet socks over that and went to bed.  There were times it HURT like crazy, but I just kept putting it on night after night (and taking it off in the morning) until one morning, the wart was gone.  This should work for warts on the hand as well.

Taking this face work conversation to this thread.

I am oldish. I relied on facials my entire life and they have worked well for me. Once a month I get/got facials and they tighten my skin, get the circulation going, cleans it up and hydrates.  I had the most amazing facialist when living in NYC, not to mention the water there is killer good. Then I moved to LA, where the water is the worst.  I don’t have wrinkles and my facialist here is not as great as my NY facials but I still rely on them.  It really works.

I also have my hair dyed/cut every 7weeks and get my eyebrows and eyelashes dyed every other week.  If I could, I’d dye my eyelashes every week. I look like I am in my ’40’s. I grew up in a different era where face work was not an option.  When I moved to LA and people found out my age, they all asked me what I had done (really-?). Nothing. Never occurred to me. I would do other things (my boobs) but nothing to my face. It think it makes you look older.  But that’s me.

Not just you, I also think it does.  I hear many times that it's not noticeable if done right, but I find it really hard to believe that all of the wealthy celebrities who have had obvious work done are all going to doctors who aren't doing it correctly.  Even Jennifer Aniston, who IMO is the most natural looking I've ever seen, still looks like she had work done.  IMO there's no way to hide it.

wooooo who do you recommend in LA for facials?  And who in NYC for facials?  Know anyone in NJ?

I go to Nellie at Raya on LaCienega for facials in LA.  I “taught” her how I liked my facials and she has done the best she can to replicate what I had in NYC.  Unfortunately, my facialist in NY is now retired and not doing well physically.  She was AMAZING.

I don’t know anyone in NJ. Research your area and try different people until you find someone you like.  There are some amazing people out there. I tried a bunch of people when I moved here but it took 5 or 6 people till I found someone I liked.

OMG.  This is going to be a book but okay.

My Dutch facialist in New York was amazing as I have written but this is why.  She really understood skin.  She could look at it and know what needed to be done. She could go to a drug store and read the ingredients off any tube or jar and know what it would do (or not) for skin.  In the winter to end my facial should would put almond paste in the calming mask to further moisturize my skin; in the summer, zinc oxide to dry it out.

Here was her routine (all done out of her apartment):  I get in the chair and she cleans my skin, wipes that off and puts on another cream and starts a great massage first on my face then to my neck and down to my shoulders and across my bodice.  Then she used an electric scrub brush; the brush was mild. She would rinse that off then the steaming begins (eucalyptus oil in the water).  Over the years she did all kinds of things to get the dirt and such to rise to the surface during the steam. She used Vaseline, she put a very light sheet masks on during the steam and with an eyedropper, continue to wet it with water so that it stayed saturated, she used a variety of creams.  She steamed for a long time, which is a no-no that I’ve heard over and over (I think she steamed my face for 20 minutes or so). I loved it. I knew my pores were really open and ready for the extraction.

When extracting she used gloves and a tissue and she was pretty intense with my face but I needed it (oily skin prone to acne).  She only used a pin if I had a milia. I’ve been to some facialists who just stick a pin in everything.  Fuck that.

After extraction my skin needed to be calmed and the pores closed.  This seems to be the part that the LA faicalists forgot to learn.  One facialist I went to here kept steaming throughout, even after extraction. I scolded her as I was uncomfortable and she was PISSED.  Anyway, my darling lady would then use that electric thingy that kills all the breakout bacteria, put on the calming mask and THEN...wait for it, take saturated lengths of cotton soaked in water that have been in the refrigerator and lay them on my skin from forehead to under the jawline.  Heaven.  Ended with a protective moisturizer.

I haven't seen her for many years so I might be missing a step but the comments I used to get on my skin after seeing her, well, they were awesome. I stopped breaking out and I had acne. My skin was very clean.  If I broke out it was because I had my period but even then, it wasn’t much. She used Christine Valmy products which most people have never heard of.  I still use the cleanser and toner but I do change up my moisturizers.  As someone once told me: skin likes the same, hair likes a variety.

To top it all off, it was two hours and she charged $65.00.  I really hit the motherload when I found her.

SO INTERESTING! I am obsessed with others' techniques and product usage. I think that the 20 minute steam thing is TOTALLY ok if it's necessary. When you have that oily, thick skin, it takes WORK to get those pores opened so you can clean em out. And I LOVE that she added essential oils to treat oil/dryness. It's so important. And you have GOT TO CLOSE THE PORES!!! It's like stitching a wound closed!! Jesus christ! The electric thingy, was it like, a zapper? Or a blue laser? I LOVED the zapper when I was in school. We'd sit and zap our zits like crazy. It was super fun LOL! I'm copying this to my notes, it's really thorough and interesting. Thank you for taking the time to share.

Now, about the 'Froggy went a courtin thing".....

Oh also, I'm watching "Black Widow" with Theresa Russell and Debra Winger and I'm in heaven.

a) I believe it is the electric zapper thing.  It makes that noise and has those LED things.  Sorry, my eyes are always closed.  I just know the noise!

b) You and I are cut from the same cloth.  I own BLACK WIDOW and know it by heart!  What “character” is your favorite?  Theresa Russell really was the worst actress but her husband kept putting her in his movies.  Why Debra Winger agreed to do the film escapes me.  Maybe for the $$$????

I have 2 questions for you regarding the movie. I’ve seen it probably 50 times but still don’t understand. Maybe I’ll email you as I don’t want to give anything away if any of the lovelies on this board wish to experience this SO BAD IT’S GREAT movie.

Oh, she used one or two toners to clean my skin as well.  I forgot that.

I know. She is probably 90 something years old now.  I was so sad when I left NY.  And she was the biggest reason why.

The key to a great facialist is someone who will do massage and extraction.  I had a big problem finding someone who would do both here,  believe it or not. Massage is key for keeping your skin healthy.

I wish more doctors believed in science, not kickbacks.

Doctors receiving kickbacks from prescriptions is illegal. If you know of this happening you should report it to the medical board of your state.

Also if it's something that really worries you in regards to your personal care, go to a doctor associated with an academic institution. They're generally on salaried so their income isn't based on reimbursements.

@QuiteContraryMoni, you know I would never think you were lumping me in with the "bad guys" :)

As a medical professional, it is both ethically wrong, not to mention illegal, for us to accept kick-backs. In any field, there are those who don't play by the rules and it makes it frustrating for those of us who do.

There is no peer-reviewed, non-biased scientific evidence that apple cider vinegar has any benefit for weight loss. The weight loss most people experience when they take apple cider vinegar is because they are also changing their diet and exercising more. Simply taking apple cider vinegar and making no other change will not result in any weight loss. Sorry to burst bubbles, but dems da facts.

Anyone know where the thread/posts are for season 11? There's 9 and 10 but 11 is empty.

My mom is coming to visit next month. She asked me to record The Affair for her. I said I wasn't sure if I would have enough dvr space and she said 'why?' I said 'I have 50 saved episodes of my cheerleader show.' And she wanted to know why I couldn't just delete them since I've already watched them. Hah. She just simply couldn't understand.

ACV did wonders for my gallbladder pain and I actually felt better taking it.

honestly lady that's the part that matters most - and ACV may ruin your teeth, but so will sugar, and I'm sure there has to be some way around possible damage to your enamel.  Personally for supplements I notice the biggest difference when I'm taking spirulina (tablets, not the gross powder) and Vitamin D.  My mood is better and I have more energy.  Also, I noticed that I lost a ton of weight when I was able to choke down whey powder.  I'm trying to gear up to do it again but it just absolutely makes me gag.

As far as doctors go, I have seen an enormous variance but I have been incredibly lucky to find some that I absolutely worship.  They are kind, and caring, and enormously competent.  I trust them.  That said, I have also had some incredibly demoralizing experiences (including literally getting cut open with no anesthesia when I was 23 and too timid to do anything except swear and cry on the table) that might have made me hate doctors if I didn't have others I was fortunately able to come to trust.  @SopranoKris is right about checking out the academic centers in particular for docs, but more than just being on a salary, no ethical doctor would EVER accept kickbacks of any kind whether it be favors, money, or their own convenience (whether they are at a center or not).  If you see something off, report it - ethics boards take that kind of thing incredibly seriously and rightly so.

I definitely understand how being a part of the system can make you cynical about it but there is so much heroism there too, with nurses and NPs, as well as doctors and other members of the medical teams.

PREACH IT.  lol  One of the main things I've had to deal with after years of tons of cardio.  My cortisol levels were so high I was clinging to every piece of fat, not to mention it was hard to sleep which in turn causes more weight gain.  I swear these girls do so much cardio it ends up backfiring.

@LaurenBrook are you saying that the cardio caused your cortisol levels to rise?

Too much cardio can put your body into a constant state of 'fight or flight' - cortisol can be a good thing but not too much of it in your system (stores as fat).   Cardio is still great and VERY important - the trend these days seems to be 'ew cardio, so uncool' and sorry, it's important for your health.  But don't do what I did, like 7 days a week, double digit runs all the time, etc.  Yipes.

And I love ACV - I put two tablespoons into about 6 oz of water and mix in some lemon juice.  I hold my nose while I chug.  I used to get...certain infections lol...quite a lot.  Haven't ever since I started taking ACV on the reg (a year and a half now).  Did it make me lose 10 pounds tho? I WISH.
