Dejana December 27, 2014 Author Share December 27, 2014 Hm, the news keeps talking about The Interview selling out every theater it's showing in, but its per/screen average doesn't seem to be that high. The Interview isn't playing at the big chains, independent theaters generally have fewer screens (maybe just 1-2 as opposed to 18 or 24) while at the multiplex, theaters 13-15 might be playing nothing but the latest Hobbit movie 4-5 times a day. The movie was yanked around the schedule and maybe the theaters made plans to show other films, further limiting the number of showtimes per day it might have. Link to comment

xaxat December 29, 2014 Share December 29, 2014 The Interview made over 5 times as much online as it did in theaters The Interview was budgeted at $44 million. Whether or not it can make back its production budget will depend on how well it holds up in online sales (something that's still relatively untested), but it has a much better shot at that number than you would think from its relatively paltry theatrical ticket sales. It would have to perform absurdly well to make back marketing costs (which are unknown to us) as well, but for it to even break even with its production budget would be an accomplishment and set a solid precedent for future online releases. Ohwell December 29, 2014 Share December 29, 2014 When I first saw the promos for The Interview a few weeks ago, I thought it was just a stupid idea to make a movie mocking a deranged leader who had nuclear weapons. Not that I care about the little North Korean's hurt feelings, but I just thought it was...dumb to make a movie about him. This was before all the hoopla, but I wasn't surprised at all when the shit hit the fan. I honestly never understood why Sony gave the go ahead for such a dumb movie in the first place. Plus, I can't stand Seth Rogen or James Franco. So they'll make some money and maybe they'll cover expenses or perhaps do even better. I'll just be glad when all the hoopla is over and the dumb movie goes away. Needless to say, I won't be watching. 2 Link to comment

Ticket sales at the box office fell 4 percent this year versus last year, and in the first nine months, profits at Regal Entertainment, the No. 1 theater chain, were down 50 percent compared with the previous year. More worrisome still, the Nielsen Company said last week that movie attendance for Americans ages 12 to 24 dropped 15 percent in the first nine months of 2014, compared with the same period a year earlier. IDK, the cost of moviegoing hasn't dramatically increased in the past 2-3 years, but this weekend increased from the same weekend last year at the box office (6 percent), and maybe the plummeting gas prices helped. As far as going out for entertainment, I still think a movie is cheaper than concerts, major sporting events or clubs, especially a matinee (I never go the movies at night and don't live in a Top 10/20 market, so maybe this is why it doesn't seem so expensive to me?) I think VOD/streaming and the slate of films not compelling people to attend are bigger issues. Dealing with a generation who've always had tablets and Youtube might be a growing challenge for movie theaters in a few years. It used to be a huge deal for a teen to be able to go to the mall with friends, but now you have helicopter parents, they can all text each other constantly, and they can probably pirate whatever movie they want fairly easily. With further numbers, Into the Woods came in second for the weekend, ahead of Unbroken ($31M vs. $30.6M). Both are still outperforming expectations so far. Link to comment

It will have to collapse not to make $300M and could challenge for the number one movie of 2014! I knew the ads were good, but this is one of the all-time box office shockers. An R-rated Iraq War drama having a $90M weekend in January might even get studios to consider releasing blockbuster action movies in the month (some are speculating Mission: Impossible 5 might move to this weekend in 2016 to get some breathing room from Star Wars). Blackhat, OTOH...I guess Chris Hemsworth can take comfort in it having a better first weekend than Paranoia and be glad that at least one more Huntsman and several more Marvel movies are in the works. The early talk was that Blackhat might getting a qualifying Oscar run...that seems to have quietly dried up. I think without American Sniper, maybe it could've doubled or tripled its opening weekend, which still wouldn't be very good, given the budget ($70 million). If the studio cared at all about making money, they should've moved it the minute it was revealed Sniper would go wide the same weekend. I think they decided it would tank no matter what, so why bother? As of yet, Chris Hemsworth simply hasn't proven himself a draw outside Thor. Edited January 18, 2015 by Dejana Link to comment

But the domestic alone should make this very profitable indeed. Right, American Sniper has no chance of overtaking Transformers but it might not fare horribly outside of the US. It's already off to a good start compared to other Eastwood movies overseas: American Sniper added seven markets this frame for a total of eight, with an estimated $9.3M from roughly 1.2M admissions on 1,467 screens and a $25.36M cume. This week, it added career-best openings for Eastwood in the UK, Taiwan, New Zealand and Peru — and it still has debuts to come in several major markets. Possibly, though it did extremely well in limited release, with three of the four theaters being in New York City and LA, and just one in Dallas (not that everyone on "the coasts" is super duper liberal). More info about the top markets this weekend: Sniper's top-grossing theaters were in San Antonio (Kyle was from Texas), Oklahoma City, Houston, New York, Albuquerque, Nashville, Knoxville, Kansas City and Irvine, Calif. Regionally, Calif. ranked No. 1, followed by Texas, Ga. and Fla. "It shows the depth of the movie. It is playing in both red states and blue states," said Warners domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman. "It’s the biggest opening of all time for a war film, but people don’t view it as a war film. It is about a true hero, and family and patriotism. It doesn’t matter that the movie is R-rated, which is sometimes a problem in smaller towns. This is the first ‘real’ superhero movie." Execs at rival studios agree, stating (off the record) that "It felt like we opened against a Marvel movie" and complaining it shaved millions off the initial projections for their films. Dejana February 5, 2015 Author Share February 5, 2015 (edited) Kingsman and Fifty Shades of Grey come out on the same weekend. It's really just a matter of how big 50S0G's opening weekend will be and how much its second weekend will collapse. I think the reports predicting a $60 million OW are too low; Valentine's Day did have half of Hollywood in it, but wasn't half as anticipated and managed $56M.
