S02.E17: Adaptation

Recommended Posts

While Team Scorpion works to stop an influx of drugs being smuggled into the country via drones, Walter gives Happy and Toby an ultimatum on their new relationship.

I'm used to the goofy pacing on this show, but I did have an issue with functional (not dried out) duct tape being in the coyote shack. Or do we know that Sylvester or Happy always carry duct tape? Or do coyotes always leave fresh duct tape in their hide outs to restrain their "clients"? Clearly I have given this much more thought than the writers thought was warranted.

I wish Walter had fired Happy and Toby. No permanently - I love them - but  Walter needs to learn that it really doesn't matter how smart he is, he can't do Scorpion alone. I'm not even sure why the others agree to call it "his team". When it comes to these jobs, he's nothing without the others. I would think Gabe would say something too. He put his butt on the line for the team. If Walter destroys it then it's Gabe's career too.

This is the first episode in a long time where I couldn't find much to nitpick on, bc the story made a lot of sense and so did a lot of the psuedoscience shenanigans. I did have a few issues with the strange timing- it shouldnt take 45 minutes to get a medevac into the Yuma desert. And there should be backup hidden in the shadows to help out Scorpion in case of things like their car breaking down - they shouldn't be abandoned like this. Other than that, the story was pretty solid and I liked it.

It was refreshing that the story did not include one count down after the other to the next potential disaster. To answer another question, before they left, Happy was packing a cargo type bag. It might have held duct tape.

The boy playing Ralph is showing more personality. His acting has improved. The mother-son relationship with Katherine McPhee is well done. There are small touches that occur either because of the directors or because of Katherine.  Sometimes it is just a glance from Katherine to check on him, or there may be a quick affectionate touch to his shoulder or hair. It reminds me of interactions in real life.

The humor on the show is fun. I enjoy the relationships but won't like it if they go the on/off route.  It is OK to have a slow build up, but so often on these shows within a couple weeks there is a break up. UGH!  Often a show is considered to have jumped the shark once the main couple gets together.  That has not been my view. When that happens, I think the show suffers for other reasons. Waiting to hear about renewal. This is one of the few shows I watch routinely.

I'm actually surprised that Walt didn't fire both Toby and Happy, because I thought for sure they were setting it up where the next episode is about Team Scorpion faltering, and Walt realizing how important Toby and Happy are, and he can't do all this on his own.  But I guess he's already over it.  He was being an asshole, but I understand some of the caution, especially when it pertains to Toby.  With Happy, I think she can keep things mission focused, but I do wonder if Toby's feelings for Happy could end up causing him to make decisions that actually end up hurting the mission or someone else.  Yeah, things worked out in the Arctic, but he was still incredibly lucky.

Drug smuggling drones is actually one of the least craziest things yet, and something I could actually see happening.  Either way, it was win just to see Cabe shoot one of them all badass-like.

The trend over the rotating one or two members staying behind is noticeable.  Again, I wonder if it is simply a reason to give the actors a break from running around and doing more action stuff.

I wonder if Sly will ever actually get on one of these various games shows?  I'm sure they can get some entertaining stuff out of that, assuming they get the real game show hosts and whatnot, to play along with it.
