If any of you like classic ghost stories, there's also "The Uninvited", with Ray Milland from 1944.  It's always a pleasure to watch, heavy on the atmosphere and dread, low on the blood and gore.

Here's a fun thing I like to do. First watch The Others so you can see Nicole Kidman give a master class on acting followed by The Skeleton Key. Contrast and compare Kidman's acting ability to Kate Hudson's lack thereof. Bonus: Gena Rowlands and John Hurt being just mind blowingly great.

Are you safe?

The last fire update is very scary in your neighborhood.

Thanks, Cupid Stunt, for thinking of us.

So far, so good.  There's been ash falling from the sky since this morning, and the air is very smoky.  Temps have been around 110 since noon so it's filthy weather to be out in and those poor firefighters.  The closest fire to us is about 4 miles away, but on the other side of Mt.Diablo, that one seems to be heading for containment.  The other fires are further away and while we're getting the ash and smoke, I don't think they pose any immediate danger.

I have a friend in Healdsburg who has had to evacuate again - 3rd time in 4 years, with her young family.  That's terrible enough but with covid, it's even harder to do that safely as well.  Luckily, she still has her mother living down the Peninsula, so they can go there.  But for the first time, there's a serious fire near her mother's place.  My friends up in Santa Rosa are on evacuation alert.  Luckily, they also have a place they can go in San Francisco, but for so many, how do you socially distance when you're fleeing from a fire?

2020 is just such a terrific year, isn't it?

2020 is pure suck.

When the CalFire web site crashed it has to be a horror show statewide.

Bea is in Leggett, near the Lodge Lightning Strike Fire (40% contained, and with the wind shift, moving away from Bea). Her orchard had already cut grass/hay for bales and haylage, selling it off. The surrounding fields are stubble and slowly growing 5th cut hay, but the orchard is dry. They cleared the old fire line around the orchard (cut in 2014), trimmed trees and removed deadfall in June.

Eight of her seasonal workers are volunteer fire fighters; one tested positive with Covid-19, along with 6 others. Yay. So everyone in town has been conscripted into the local fire department. They are as ready as they can be.

This is a bad year.

Stay frosty, boes

Geez you guys, stay safe.

My manager at the physio place left me a message on my cell Monday afternoon that sounded vague enough that I was in no hurry to call her back. I finally did last night. After asking how I was doing and if I was enjoying my summer, she went on to mention that unfortunately they will not be needing my services anytime in the near future. Shocker. Like, I've barely heard from you in the six months since I've been off, and you've been open for two and a half months and haven't contacted me once so yeah, I kind of figured. Apparently she'll miss my laugh. I won't miss you, you cheap bitch. I just mentioned I will need to pass by at one point to pick up my things. She paused for a second before saying that was fine and to text her before I want to pass by. Grr. I sent her and her mother a pleasant email last night asking for my record of employment. According to the government of Canada website, it should have been sent no more than 5 days after my pay was interrupted. Failure to produce it can result in a $2000 fine or six months in jail. I didn't mention that part yet. If I don't get it, I can fill a form out online and the government will get involved.

Fire update from the Bay Area.....

Small victories in putting out some brush and grass fires, grim, with no ending in sight on the large number of bigger fires.  We have a lack of firefighters and firefighting equipement, partly due to the number of fires in neighboring states, as well as throughout the rest of the state, and the number of firefighters is down.  Usually there is a significant number of fire crews drawn from people in prison who fight fires for a reduction in their sentence, but those numbers are down because of the rapid spread of covid among the imprisoned.

Up here, hard choices are being made as to what to save and what to leave to the fire.  Our neighbors received his brother and family last night after they evacuated from Guerneville up in Sonoma County.  The firefighters were staged at their property, which was encouraging, but they were staged there because the fire was just two houses up, which is not.  The old growth Redwood groves at Armstrong Redwood Grove has been abandoned to its fate, as has another grove down in Santa Cruz.  The old growth trees may very well make it through the fire, they have before.  It's the "younger" trees, that next generation which are still 200 years old or so that may not.  Silly to worry about trees?  Oh, I don't know.

Anyway, we're okay except the air is absolutely foul, full of ash and the smell of burning.

You all stay well!

Geez Boes, stay safe.

About 20 years ago a friend and I were able to stay with her uncle in lovely Sonoma for two weeks. We even went to Santa Rosa for a carnival. We saw the petrified forest, the Redwood forest, went wine tasting, and went down to San Francisco a few times. It was amazing and such a lovely area. The thought of it being on fire makes me so sad. I've always wanted to go back and I think of my time there fondly.

That absolutely suck, boes. We were surrounded up here in WA a couple years ago. Wildfires in BC, Eastern WA and Oregon. The smoke and stink of burning in the air lasted for weeks. Hell, even my ancient rosemary plant succumbed to the foulness. I hope you get a break soon.

The Lonely Work of Performing Funerals in Lima, Peru -- Ronald Marin, age 30, left his home in Venezuela in 2018. He moved to Peru for health reasons. Formerly a teacher, he found work at a Catholic church and was soon asked to help comfort mourning families nearby. Marin later took vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, becoming a lay worker for his church. As the current pandemic grew, Catholic churches in Peru began closing their doors and restricting services to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Some of the devout, like Marin, continued to work with members of the community, administering funerals, comforting families, praying with the sick, and more. Rodrigo Abd, a photojournalist with the Associated Press, recently spent time with Marin in and around Lima, as he worked alone, supporting others, in a country hard-hit by COVID-19.

Walter's book came out this past spring. His publisher had not set up a book tour and in March I was working with him to set up a book signing at a gallery in downtown NYC. Then came the lockdown and everything in life abruptly halted and we didn't discuss it anymore. The Waldos were scheduled to play in May at Bowery Electric in NYC, but that show got cancelled due to the pandemic. The show was rescheduled to play live stream this coming September.

Here's the tiny tribute I posted on my fb page:

Back in the day, the three bands I’d go see the most were the Ramones, the Cramps and the Heartbreakers. I saw the Heartbreakers at all the clubs in NYC and at venues that I never saw any other band play ever. They were always playing somewhere. I watched Johnny Thunders go from the most amazing cool guitar player to a guy who would stumble onto stage and pass out. One show in particular stands out in my mind. It was at one of those venues where I only saw the Heartbreakers play. The band came out on stage from the right with Johnny last. He stumbled out, reached for his guitar, but never made it. Usually he’d play at least part of a song before he passed out, but this time he passed out before his hand even touched his guitar’s neck. Walter, who usually looked pissed, looked the most pissed I’d ever seen him, frighteningly pissed. But he led the band, as usual, doing all the singing and guitar, very angrily. That was the night I realized that even though they were booked as Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers, it was Waldo’s band. Walter, thank you for the music of my life. Thank you for playing as long as you did. And thank you for playing on my song on Subterranean Jungle. (I know he’s laughing at that.)

I saw him in my dream last night. Basically it was like being in the dressing room after a show. He wasn’t wearing glasses. We had a short conversation and there were lots of people there, everyone anxious to talk to him. I don’t remember my words exactly, but at the end of our conversation I told him that when he spoke, his words made people see pictures in their minds. Honestly I don’t know what made me say that. But I remember the thoughtful look on his face before he turned away to talk to all the others, one by one. Goodbye Walter.

Can I ask you guys to say a prayer for someone? She's a long time acquaintance, Gail, who is paralyzed from the neck down, due to a motorcycle accident 30-40 years ago, and she just tested positive with covid. As if life isn't hard enough for her and her husband. I'm very concerned about her since she is physically so weak and immune compromised. There's still no way to know who will have a mild reaction and who will pay the ultimate price. So far she has a bad cough, that's why she got tested. I'm just hoping it doesn't get any worse. Thanks.

Worse, unfortunately.  We had a grass fire last night and that , combined with the winds bringing the smoke from the other fires has put us in the "Very unhealthy" category .  The whole Bag Area is pretty much in the same boat.

The Lake Fire (70+ miles north, slightly west of Burbank) is burning merrily along. The wild shifted last night and Burbank was covered in ash, the air acidic, in an unnatural ochre haze. We cleared the patio furniture and planters, and took down the sun sails last week. Melvin sits at the patio doors, grumbling that he can't go outside.

I stopped at the in-laws this morning, delivering restrung tennis racquets and to walk with MIL on her mission to get to the tennis courts. We made it to the park benches, about 150 yards away from the court -- So tantalizing. The wind shifted and I called FIL to pick us up. MIL NOT happy about that, but the air quality was changing for the worse. MIL is in excellent spirits. Her ability to smell and taste are still off, and the joint aches continue, but that doesn't stop her. The hospital equipment is going to be moved out this week, and only one nurse comes to check up on her progress. I brought chicken biryani and rice pilaf to tempt her appetite.

Bea said locals have been cutting fire breaks and removing dead fall that should have been cleared months ago (people don't learn). The weather and air quality is horrible, and families are evacuating for health reasons, leaving properties unprotected and unmonitored for fire. A few fools left their cattle and sheep behind to fend for themselves; a private feed lot is collecting them to keep them watered, fed and out of harms way.

I'm so glad you MIL out of that bad air.  After what she's already been through, this smoke is just too much.

Are they as short of crews where Bea is at as they are here?

I warned her, but she was determined. <shakes head> When we started out the wind was coming off the ocean, but things got ugly when she was ready to turn back.

She wears a N95 mask, gloves and gown all the time. I wear the same when I'm with her. I don't want to take any chances after everything she's been through.

There are so many people sick in rural areas, everyone has been put to work to protect life and property. The fire department was closed a month ago for a Corona outbreak; half of the regulars were quarantined. The volunteer crews have been filling in. 90+ volunteer crews went down to Big Basin to cut fire lines, and anyone able-bodied is carrying a shovel to protect the town.
