S29: Peta Murgatroyd

She does get called out for "here's my crotch" costumes, but I've never noticed her costumes as more revealing than others. Especially the crotch thing - with athletic dancing and sexy costumes, you see everybody's crotch - or at least where its located, but it's got clothes on, so who cares. I remember a couple of costumes of Karina's and many costumes of Edyta's that made me, at least, see it as envelope pushing. Maybe she gets that criticism because, revealing things aside, sometimes the costumes are a little on the tacky/wacky side, and sometimes the choreography is as well.

I don't think it is the revealing-ness of it that people are reacting to, it was that it was basically a bra, panties, and garter belt combination, i.e. something that implies that some sort of adult behavior is going on.  Most of the costumes, even the more revealing ones, are just costumes.  It's all about the context.  I mean, after all, a bikini is fine on the beach, but no one would wear one to work.  Unless their workplace was awesome.

I guess my response would be so?  If you want to say you are not comfortable with that combo of items that is one thing...it does not make it ok to assume she is sleeping with all her partners, calling her a slut, or a cheap hooker.  Being uncomfortable with revealing clothing is fine but I think it says more about the person making the comment than the person wearing the cloths.  I don't think we heard a thing about Maks when they did the jungle book dace & they actually called on twitter to have Tony take his shirt off.

The whole thing just screams of misogyny and the notoriously puritan attitudes America in general has with the human body (specifically a female one) and sex.

I didn't even particularly like her costume (hated the color) but slut shamming is ridiculous. That is what I have issue with.

I usually don't care one way or the other about what Peta wears, but this time for me it was inappropriate and didn't qualify as a costume especially for the dance they were doing.  For me it would have made a difference in my opinion if she would have had on a little skirt and the bra top and removed the garter.  Still a skimpy outfit but in my opinion much more suited for the dance.

Which is a perfectly legitimate feeling to have about the outfit.  What is not legit is for people to make assumptions about her personal life based on an outfit (which you clearly did not do.)  That is the difference & it is a clear line to me.  It is also a really thin line.

As to why people feel it is an inappropriate outfit- well that is a mmv situation.  I personally don't mind those types of outfits because I like to see the work the human body is doing in a dance.  It think it is beautiful and should be celebrated because it is impressive. Nakedness is a big deal because people make it a big deal.

This particular outfit was not to my personal taste (kind of because I'm jealous- her abs are sick) but mainly because I didn't like the color.

Edited for moderation to fix the flow of the convo...

I agree, there's nothing wrong with seeing the body and how it moves while dancing. I didn't like her outfit at all. The fact that she stripped down to a red lace bra and panties and took off James's shirt is the real issue I had with the costuming and choreography. There was a moment where I felt like it was the beginning of a bad adult film, and completely inappropriate for a family show. If she was wearing the same amount of clothing but was wearing something that actually resembled a dance costume instead of lingerie then I personally wouldn't have a problem with her wardrobe. She has an awesome body that I'm sure she worked hard for, but I think a costume that showed skin, fit into the dance, and didn't look like she raided Victoria's Secret  would be a better way to show it off.

OK, we are not using the word slut again, THE WORD (not you necessarily) is derogatory & misogynist and will be moderated. BUT also discussion of "slut vs don't say slut" is now done. No more bringing it up or it will be moderated as well.

ETA: clarification the discussion of "slutty" fashions or use of the word slut to describe people dressed a certain way is what I mean to curtail. PLEASE feel free to discuss how terrible the outfit was, how inappropriate for the dance, or for 8:15 at night (think of the children!), or that you LOVED it. Just keep the "slut" out of it.

I hope that makes it clearer!

Couple of thoughts. 1. Context counts. Peta's outfit was just underwear and it looked like underwear. If she had worn exactly the same amount of fabric but styled differently, I don't think there would have been as many criticisms. 2. Again, context. The setup was a fantasy at a gas station. If it had been a romantic rumba, it would have seemed somehow less racy. 3. According to James' blog, the producers wanted them to take it even further - I shudder to think what the producers had wanted them to do. So I guess this was the more "conservative" version?

Uke, your comment about the context of the outfit and about Peta wearing the same amount of fabric but styled differently made me think of the Tango Peta did with Gilles during the All-Star season. She was also wearing clothing that looked very bedroom appropriate, but it fit into the context of the dance and because of that, I don't think it caused as much controversy. I think that since it was mostly sheer, overall it was the same amount of fabric too, minus the weird butt-cape thing. That dance can be found here  if anyone is interested.

While it was technically more fabric than many other outfits, I'm still not sure Peta's red outfit is even legal in all 50 states!

No conclusions about her life or self, but the big issue in that it looked cheap. No not super-affordable cheap, but the other kind. The woman behind it might not be, but it communicated "low budget porn film". Vs. what that dance should have had--sexy.

I know some people feel a certain type of way when it comes to Peta, but I just adore her. My favorite partnerships she's had are the friendly ones, because they appear so genuine. Her relationship with Donald Driver was spectacular and I loved how emotional she was when she and Nyle got their scores last night. She's seems like a caring and nurturing teacher that's also strict. She balances that well I think. Her wanting to learn sign language is also admirable.

I particularly like that she's not holding back with Nyle. She could easily give him easier choreography, but there's definitely some degree of difficulty there. I also think she's one of the best pro dancers on the show. Their rumba has probably been my favorite of their three dances so far.
