-- Per WM, Team Arrow won't just be fighting to save Star City this year - this time, the finale is going national. In order to finally take down Dahrk, Oliver will have to get over his fear of magic and learn some new tricks. WM: "He's going to really have to dig deep to find a way not just to find the strength within himself, but actually inspire a bunch of other people to find that same strength and push back and fight back." Diggle's guilt over Laurel's death will lead him to make some unexpected decisions, while Thea will have to decide once and for all if she's more of a Queen or a Merlyn. Felicity and Oliver put aside their differences to take down Dahrk, but this reunion doesn't necessarily imply a happy ending.  WM: "I think we land in a somewhat surprising place for the two of them.". As for the finale title, "Schism," WM says it hints at "the ultimate setup" to what the show will explore in Season 5, particularly with Oliver. (TV Guide article, page 35 of Spoilers thread)
-- WM: "It becomes a question of: How does Oliver defeat his magic?... And that really won't be answered until the finale." (TVLine article, page 35 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per WM, approaching the May 25 closer “was less about plot and more about unanswered questions about character stuff. We’re going to take the team to a pretty dark place [so] it’s much more about, ‘Where are we going to pick these guys up?’ [in the fall]. The character arcs that we built this season, we knew exactly where we wanted every character to end, and it was in a very sort of morally grey place. So they’re asking themselves some pretty profound questions.” (TVLine article, page 35 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per WM, the S4 finale (Schism) is "a good clue" for what Season 5 is about. WM: "We talked about Season 4 as a soft reboot and I think Season 5 will see some big changes on the show." (TV Guide article, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per WM, DD's target is much bigger than Star City.  WM:  "The finale revolves around Oliver [Stephen Amell] finding a way to inspire the team. It goes back to Lance [Paul Blackthorne[ asking him to step into the light and lead" - even if it means a face-off with DD that takes Oliver away from Star City and puts him smack in the public eye. WM: "It's the Green Arrow coming out in a very bold way... He is out there saving the country."   (TV Guide's Finale Preview article, page 35 of Spoilers thread)
-- Akin to S2's Deathstroke showdown, a "huge" location shoot in part involving "a big intersection in downtown Vancouver" was needed to do this deadly denouement justice. And deadly it will be. WM: "It's a pretty grim one, I'm sad to say. We have a huge number of potential fatalities... And you'll definitely get a hint about where the team is headed for Season 5."  (TVLine article, page 35 of Spoilers thread)
-- On whether Olicity will reunite, WM: "We started off this season with Felicity really wanting to come back and do this because she herself enjoys this kind of vigilante lifestyle, but that is separate from Oliver. In [the Season 4 premiere], he didn’t want to; it was more about her making herself happy than anything else. So she’ll be grappling in some ways with that ."  Per WM, the coming episodes “will echo [the premiere] in terms of where a lot of the characters end up ... specifically Oliver and Felicity."  MG: "People will have to see if things change or not change” as Season 4 winds to a close. (TVLine article, page35 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per WM, the romantic situation between Oliver & Felicity will not be resolved right away.  WM: "Felicity does come to see her own role in the breakup and that she can't put it all on Oliver... We felt compelled not to wrap that story up with a bow."  (TV Guide's Finale Preview article, page 35 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per WM, Thea will be grappling with the question of ‘Did she become Speedy because of the Lazarus Pit, or did she become Speedy because that’s actually who she is and what she wants to do?'”  When that question is answered by the May 25 finale, WM: “She will have a clear sense of who she is and what she wants.” And during that soul-searching journey, WM: “She will also be facing an old foe." (TVLine article, page 36 of Spoilers thread)
-- WM: "Thea had bloodlust earlier in the season and since then has been questioning her place on the team, and questioning whether or not she is Speedy, which goes back to her character's struggle with whether she's more of a Queen or a Merlyn... She's going to answer that question in [the finale] and come up with, what we hope, is a pretty surprising answer."  (TV Guide article, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- On S4 finale's big fight scene, JBam: "Without giving anything away, there's the old saying, 'Go big or go home.' This finale sequence buries every other one we've done." (ComicBookResources article, page 158 of Starling City Times thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), SA gave two truths and one lie for the final two episodes of S4: Oliver gets off the island, Oliver kills someone, and the final two episodes take place over several days. (ah-maa-zing tumblr post, page 398 of Social Media thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), SA: "Characters are honored. Feels like a season finale not series. There's a pocket of intrigue that's gonna jazz people up." (BackhandedComps tweet, page 27 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), SA said that the end of S4 will be the opposite of S3 in terms of who stays and who leaves. (PDDArrow tweet, page 1049 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), SA said that the Olicity relationship will be in a "mature place" at the end of S4, but no firm resolution like at the end of S3. Also, per SA, everyone will be happy with the end of S4, intrigue, will excite people, continues one of his fav parts of S4. Per SA, we will be satisfied with the season finale and there's a part at the end that will jazz people up for S5. (Emony, iamdemi02, honeybunstoken and bratvaolicity tweets, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), SA said that we will get "a certain sense of what the future holds for Oliver and Felicity" in the season finale. (Soulfire post, page 404 of Social Media thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), SA said that Oliver and Felicity are now in a mature place with regards to their break-up, and the finale will have a certainty about the direction in which they are headed in S5 and beyond.  (Ah-maa-zing tumblr post, page 398 of Social Media thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), SA said that there is a theme we’ll see at the end of this season leading into next year’s overarching theme for Oliver that he was adamant about wanting for Oliver. (Soulfire post, page 404 of Social Media thread)
-- SA: "Last year the finale felt like a series finale. This year, it's very much like a season finale.... It's almost - in a very, very strange way - it's like the inverse of the last finale that we had." (Video of SciFiNow interview with SA, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- In CW Upfronts red carpet interview (on May 19), SA said that everyone will "basically have to choose a new path by the end of the episode [423]... where they're going to go, what they're going to do. What all the events that have transpired over the past 23 episodes have meant to them.  It's a good spot and then there's just a little - ... there's a little hint and plug and spark for season 5 that I think is really going to excite the fans." (OliversQueen_86@nlee86 tweet, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per CammienRay tweets (on May 19), SA said that 423 will not cause tears but will be a "spark for next season, that everyone on Team Arrow ill have to choose a new path, and that Darhk is specifically after Felicity. (CammienRay tweets, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At CW Upfronts (on May 19), SA:  "The public visage and version of Oliver Queen within Star City is something that we really haven't touched on. And I think that something happens in the finale that will help change that." (ComicBook.com article, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At CW Upfronts (on May 19): On whether Olicity will be different from S3 finale, SA: "Yes, it is different, but in a lot of ways, it looks the same." Also, 423 will not be about rescuing Felicity. (PaigeOTA tweet, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At CW Upfronts (on May 19), SA said that Darhk showing up at the loft (at the end of 422) will be resolved very early in this episode, which will be about what Oliver is going to do with Star City descending into chaos and how is he going to deal with it.  Also SA: "We call back something that happened way back in our premiere this year, and we see a side of Oliver... as it relates to and as he deals with Star CIty, that we've never seen before." Also, SA: "Ironically, Curtis is one of the people who helps him see things a little differently and try a bit of a different approach." Per SA, Oliver has gone up against Darhk so many times that it's not a physical thing but a mental hurdle that he has to get over. This episode feels like a season finale, not a series finale. (IGN video/article, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- SA tweeted: "The past three seasons have been building towards the choice Oliver has to make tonight." (SA tweet, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- SA: "Last year, our finale felt a lot like a series finale because Oliver and Felicity were literally riding off into the sunset... I would always prefer that in the series finale of Arrow, Oliver dies, which I've said is good. If you're going to end it, end it properly and have him die heroically. ... This feels very much like a season finale... We have some good resolution. You know, we have the critical moment of choice between Oliver and Darhk and we see what happens. It's a good finale with lot of action."  On whether there will be any "resolution" between Oliver and Felicity, SA: "No, not in this episode. ... We don't play with your heart in this episode at all. At all... This episode is not about Oliver and Felicity. This is about a whole host of things. And they're just part of it." (ETonline article, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- On 423, SA: "I think there's always hope for Oliver and Felicity. But that hope is not addressed in this episode at all." (E! News video of SA interview, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- SA: “I can tease that there is an ultimate showdown, and that ultimate showdown takes place on a level playing field... And I know the hook from the last episode made it feel like the whole episode would be about rescuing Felicity, and that’s really not the case at all. We solve that problem pretty early on. ... “It calls back a little bit of our premiere from this year, which I think is always a fun technique. We get some resolution. Not just for Oliver, not just for Darhk, but for most of our core cast members. ...“Last year, there was just a ton of mystery [in the finale] — the team was staying, Oliver and Felicity were going... In this finale it feels very similar because its almost the opposite.” (EW article, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- SA: “There’s nothing we really do in the finale that introduces a big bad for next year. We do throw a little hook in there that will very much excite people for season 5, but it does not have to do with the big bad.” (EW article, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- SA: "We see Oliver connecting with Star City in a way that he has never connected as Oliver Queen. We had an extreme in Season 1, and another extreme in Seasons 2, 3, and 4, and this was a choice that Oliver made." Amell said. He'll have another extreme moment - but the way he handles it is considerably different from his previous season-ending encounters. SA: "But ultimately, life is not black and white, there are shades of grey, and we had him make a decision tonight, in the finale, and we had him make it in an incredibly deliberate, analytical way – not a hot-headed way, not a vengeful way, just quite simply, he does something that has to be done. I was very happy with how the finale came out." (ComicBook article, page 38 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 15), EBR gave two truths and one lie: more people will die, there will be a pizza party, and Donna will get involved in the action.  (Ah-maa-zing tumblr post, page 398 of Social Media thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), EBR said that Felicity has a number of questions before her, and a number of options: either she can accept that she will always be asking certain questions when it comes to Oliver (i.e. “can she trust him?”) or she can answer those questions in some form. She indicated that it may take a while for Felicity to answer these questions, but that she will. She also said that, in her opinion, Felicity will eventually forgive Oliver, because she cannot lose the connection she has with him, she cannot let go of that kind of love. However, the “when” is definitely a question mark, and there is no guarantee that it will be by season’s end. (Ah-maa-zing tumblr post, page 398 of Social Media thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), EBR said that it may take a long time for Felicity to come to terms with Oliver's lies. (Mirror.co.uk article, page 165 of Starling City Times thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR gave two truths and a lie: in the finale you find on E2 that Diggle is a superhero, by end of the season Olicity are not together, by end of the season Darhk dies. The lie is Diggle being a superhero on Earth 2. (Morrigan2575 posts, page 37 of Spoilers thread, and page 1046 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- Per DR, fans should be prepared for even more twists in the finale. DR: "Clearly, the end of the world is at hand... It's Arrow, so there's the threat of bigger-than-life catastrophes that will threaten Team Arrow and will threaten the ones they love." (ETonline article, page 36 of Spoilers thread)
-- On how 423 paves the way for S5, DR: "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. That's the big theme. You are going to see a team that's more fractured than it ever has been. The elements that remain of that team, ultimately, in Season 5, will be the strongest of the strong. I'm excited, because you are going to see a team stronger than it has been." (ComicBookResources article, page 36 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per DR, the season finale will be all about Damien Darhk - tracking him down and saving the world as Team Arrow are faced with tough decisions as they're against the clock to save, not just Star City, but the world. DR: "[Darkh] has to get his comeuppance." (MIrror.co.uk article, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that we wouldn’t get “the warm, fuzzy” feelings from the end of this season, that Darhk does something to the team and used the term “major fracture”.  Also per DR: “We aren't leaving it with the fuzzies but I think we are leaving it open for great storytelling."  (Soulfire post, page 404 of Social Media thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that Oliver & Felicity's status is more ambiguous; they're in a better place but not back together by the end of S4. (Morrigan2575 post, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that at the end of this season you can't really tell where Olicity is at. (kalichica12 tweet, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that there is hope but don't expect an Olicity wedding at the start of S5. (orchidd_111 tweet, page 1046 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- On Olicity in 423, DR: "Will there be a wedding? No. Will they make up? hmmm. ... You'll see movement in the right direction, but you won't get everything you want."  (MIrror.co.uk article, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that there will be a nice brief moment between Diggle and Felicity at the end of the season. (Morrigan2575 post, page 1046 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that Diggle's decision over Andy and Laurel will have impact on the team. (Morrigan2575 post, page 1046 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that it's a fractured group at the end of S4; Darhk does something to the team. (Morrigan2575 post, page 1046 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- At City of Heroes 2 (on May 14), DR said that we'll see a different Diggle by the end of this season and Diggle will pay for lying to Lyla. (Morrigan2575 post, page 1046 of Spoiler Discussion thread)
-- Asked to describe how things are with each of the characters at the end of this season, DR: "It's messed up... No one's happy.  And, as you know, Laurel passed away so we're still dealing with that. Diggle particularly is dealing with the guilt of that. Killed his brother, too, so that's not good. And, uh, so we're all in various stages of shock and grief - still, even at the end of the season." (Extra Facebook Q&A with DR, page 406 of Social Media hread)
-- Asked about what Diggle will be doing in S5, DR: "The team is fragmented by the end of season 4 and Diggle is a broken man." He doesn't know what will happen with Diggle next season, although the writers told him a few things and there's a lot to explore with Diggle.  He personally wants to find out about Diggle's parents. As for Diggle lying to Lyla, DR: "A day of reckoning will come for him facing his wife."  (Extra Facebook Q&A with DR, page 406 of Social Media hread)
-- Per CR, the season finale will be "intense, painful, shocking and scary.”  Also, CR: "It’s very open-ended for many characters — to such a degree that you will have no idea how Season 5 will resume, and which characters may be returning or which characters will be gone for good.”  (TVLine article, page 37 of Spoilers thread)
-- On Laurel's death changing Quentin's dynamic with Team Arrow, PB: "We’ll see that in the finale really, so I can’t talk about that too much. But I think he’s cemented a pretty strong relationship with these guys and he’s got a strong respect for Oliver now. There’s some rough patches, bumps in the road, but I feel like there’s a bond between them. Obviously it’s a terrible thing, but this grief will probably be the most bonding thing between them all." (Zap2It article, page 36 of Spoilers thread)
-- Per EK, there’s a moment in 423 where they were shooting late and he's laying down in the scene, and he went to sleep for real. (Vulture article, page 169 of Starling City Times thread)
-- Per EK, Oliver and Curtis have some moments in 423 where they have to talk brass tacks to each other to help figure out the situation. At one point, they have a heart-to-heart while things around them are spiraling. (Vulture article, page 169 of Starling City Times thread)

Um, so clearly the events that happened in The Flash finale could affect us in season 5. It does not affect our [season 4] finale though. Our finale is a standalone event." So, that new promo actually got me excited :)

It seems like Oliver enters the loft as GA, i.e. through the window.

Windows repair guy will be even richer after the riot. :D

Did I see a Ghost in the bunker? Also, kid is back with Damien so maybe Oliver did trade her for Felicity, Donna and Curtis. Speaking of Felicity, no shot at all of her in that promo. I get the CW promo monkeys really want to hype up the action but they couldn't include 1 measly shot? C'MOOOONNN! (Do I have to pay @wonderwall? ;) ) I hope that confrontation looks much better than it did when the Glades denizens fought Brick with 2-by-4s.

Finally, a promo! That looks good. Definitely looks like Oliver smashes through the loft windows to save Felicity, Curtis and Donna. It's just nice to see some more solo Oliver stunts.

Once again the city is in meltdown and seems to be fighting each other, and I really hope they take the end of season fight elsewhere next season. It's beyond tired now.

Re the latest trailer, the fight scene at the end reminds me of Dark Knight Rises.  I keep going back to what MG said in an interview several months ago, how they were going to do something they had never done with a villain before.  So far I don't see it, I see S1 earthquake machine callback, I see S2 street battle callback. Am I missing something?

pretty sure it was putting Darhk on trial

The trial where the prosecutor didn't even bother to do an intensive, exhaustive research of the defendant and had to be told by her friends that they could be witnesses and place the defendant at the scene of a crime, LOL! That will never not amuse me.

Looks like Oliver crashes into a second-floor window, not their bedroom but maybe the other side. Did Felicity order shatter-proof glass for the main floor? :P

Also, how long is Darhk supposed to be powered? Reiter lost his mojo after a while unless he killed again. Granted, Darhk did have tens of thousands of deaths fueling him.

Now, since we are talking Guggenheim quotes, didn't he say at some point they were going to do something "never seen in a TV show" or something like that? Was he talking about the nuke?

Did I or did I not call GA entering the Loft through the Window LOL?? I thought it would be how DS found out he's the GA, but dammit I'm counting it anyway!

The "never seen/done before" quotes from the EPs this season (also, SA said that we'll see a side of Oliver in the finale that we've never seen before; and DR said that Diggle will be different by the end of the season)...

Quote

-- Per MG, fans can expect to be surprised by a twist coming up with the season's Big Bad. MG: "The back half of the season, we're pretty much following the same structure that we have in seasons past where obviously the Big Bad gears up. That said, we're going to throw a hard six in episode 15 that I think will surprise people... We're going to do something that's never been done before on Arrow with the Big Bad. 15 is a real game-changer episode for us."  Also, per MG, this big twist "doesn't involve a character death. It's a move that we've never made with one of our Big Bads."  Per MG, his goal is to always try to do something differently." In Season 4, the intent was to mix up the familiar structure of 23 episodes with a "Big Bad climax at the end." MG: "One of the things I felt personally very strongly coming into Season 4 was Season 3 -- and I love Season 3. I know Season 3 gets knocked, but there's a lot of episodes there that I don't think quite get their due -- it ended with this orgy of plot twists, which I love ... We went into Season 4 going we want Season 4 to resonate for reasons other than the plot twists. We want to come in and be very disciplined and tell a different kind of story. Even looking ahead to Season 5, to tempt fate, how's that going to be different?" (IGN article, page 28 of Spoilers thread, and page 804 of Spoiler Discussion thread)

Quote

-- Per WM, fans can expect a “crazy back half” of S4. WM: “We’re really excited about some of the things we’re throwing at the team; they’re gonna be taking on some villains-of-the-week that we’ve never seen before, with tactics that the team’s never gone up against; we’re going to have Laurel (Katie Cassidy) helping to challenge and possibly even take down Darhk, at least temporarily, in a surprising way that we haven’t seen her use in a while. We’re intrigued by seeing where Thea (Willa Holland) goes with this bloodlust and where it takes her, and most importantly, really evolving Oliver’s relationship, not just with Felicity, but with the rest of the team.” (Variety article, page 29 of Spoilers thread)

Just watched the IGN video posted to Spoilers Only -- so the DD at the loft thing gets resolved pretty early in the episode. I'm gonna guess this is the cold open, including Oliver crashing through the window*. There might not even be anything for Felicity to choose to do anything re: DD threatening her.

[* Every time a version of Oliver Queen crashes through a window, I spend the next month singing The National. "There's a science to walking through windows." ...Yeah.]

Also, bless Eric Goldman for asking about Earth 2 Laurel, and Steve not addressing her directly in anyway. bwahahahaha forever.

It's near the end of the interview with IGN's Eric Goldman posted in the spoilers thread. Goldman asks SA about how Oliver would react to Earth 2 LL, SA responds with how he thinks Oliver would respond to the idea of multiple Earths.

It seemed like SA really didn't want to be there and was ready to bolt.

LOL was it like that the whole interview or just when he was asked about LL?

Kinda through the whole interview. His inability to look people in the eye when he's talking to them is probably not helping things.  He looked elsewhere about 98% of the time.

What's up with that? I've noticed that he has trouble looking into people's eyes even IN the show...

I've always let him off the hook because I thought it was an acting choice for a distant Oliver.  And, it seemed like it improved in S4 up until the Olicity break up.  But, it really does seem like it's more of a SA thing than an acting choice.

Random question.

Seeing as the country, homeland security or whatever knows about all of the nuke stuff. Why are they relying on a bunch of vigilantes instead of sending in some troops to support? Maybe i missed this explenation.

I found it hilarious that he can't hide his frustration -- Eric G asks about how the last episode ended in the DD at the loft cliffhanger, and Steve gives the polite version of "that's not at all important in any possible way". Like. Dude. It's not the audience's/journos' fault that your show ends the penultimate episode in a cliffhanger that then amounts to nothing.

That looks like a cool stunt.

And just to gloat for a bit, my faith has paid off as there are stunts at the loft in the finale with Felicity and Donna present. Oh, ye of little faith.:)

Let me live. My batting average isn't that high.

As for the dialogue tease in Spoilers Only, weren't cast members talking about Echo playing unconscious? So Curtis gets hurt? Maybe while wielding the missile repelling camera.

I don't know why but I have this pessimistic feeling that nobody will be really satisfied with the season finale. It just seems like everyone wants the season of mysticism to be over. Maybe I am just reading it wrong but at least in my opinion nothing sounds all that exciting at the moment.

Dialogue tease: I'm gonna go with either Curtis or Donna. I really hope it's not Thea but I did notice she gets jumped/attacked by someone in the bunker. Ugh.

I swear someone talked somewhere about Echo doing something while Curtis is unconscious.

Wasn't it that EK actually fell asleep while playing unconscious?

Either it's Curtis talking about Paul, or Paul talking about Curtis and they pull a switcheroo and Paul bites it, sending Curtis on his inevitable death-inspired superhero journey.

Noooooooooo.

This will probably happen but I'm so bored.com of death being a motivator. Why couldn't Curtis just want to be a hero after getting a taste of it and seeing what the team does? Whyyyyyyy?

Do we know when that came out? Can we pinpoint it to 423 filming?  I can't remember if Curtis has ever been unconscious,  unless we count 417?

I'm usually fairly easy to please with shows I like, I can and do happily ignore lots of things like plot holes, similar sets etc.  But this season, at least for me, I think the BMD has sort of put me on edge and tainted some of 4b for me.

4a though started out very well and it seems people including myself forget that in their 4b rage :D

I remain optimistic though that I will enjoy season 5 as much as I did 4a.

I am struggling through season 4 so so badly. Only good thing about it is Felicity and I'm zoning out half the time when she's not on screen. Ugh!

Loved season 3! It was melodramatic bit did not have the nasty BMD and I was fine with Olicity being star crossed and tragic.

Going to get super sh@tty if I reach episode 23 and Felicity is not in it much!
