Just 'cause he's eligible doesn't mean he's in. And it's good that he won't be able to profit off this.

Right, because the writers control the vote. They've kept out guys who were never officially banned, and one might figure PED use is less of a sin than directly betting on games. My concern is that they might be "persuaded" to "correct an injustice" and let Rose in.

I forgot to stay away from this area since I didn't feel like clicking on why everybody is irate.  I didn't feel like ruining my day, but I also forgot to avoid the thread and then immediately remembered why after Lantern7 elaborated on why everyone is angry.  Oh well.

I thought Manfred was quitting by the way.

There are still a ton of issues in Major League Baseball, and rather than address those significantly, this was the move that was made.  That's lame.

Despite the decision, and as mentioned by AimingforYoko, the writers still have to add them to the ballot & vote them in. So it's going to take at least a little more to put both Joe and Pete into the Hall of Fame.

I wouldn't be stunned if they got there, but it would be still a tad bit annoying for a couple reasons.  If Bonds, McGuire, Clemons, etc if all alive are still not in, then that would validate the pathetic motives from those making the Cooperstown decisions.  Plus, they could even wait a second after Rose passed to do this, but decades came and went and let him live & die not getting honored.

While the numbers are more than enough for both to be in, they're exclusion is not something I had a big issue with.  Choosing one's death and being deceased as the reason...and the one thing left to put them is just pathetic.

But hey!  Someone will say it has nothing to do with him being dead.  It's just coincidence & it played out that way.  But if that's the case, what changed over the past decade

ETA: Didn't see the last several comments at all for some reason before I prepared & published by post.

One point of clarification... these guys won't be voted on by the BBWAA. They'll be considered by the Classic Baseball Era committee because they played before 1980. Those committees are made of Hall of Famers, former executives, and a couple of baseball historians.

That's why they won't be getting in before 2028, because the next vote of the Classic Era is in 2027.

Yeah, I read up on the process, and of course the content was mixed between one process and another.

Still not automatic, but I do think they're definitely getting in.  They'd have basically a zero percent chance if the writers held the cards.  With the CBEC it isn't daunting.  Though it depends on who those sixteen people are.

Might not be this decade; they need 12 of 16 votes to be "honored" in 2028

Pete Rose played in the 80s. Wasn't he a player/manager for his last couple of years as a player? Would that affect when he's allowed to be admitted? (Please say yes.)

Change of pace:

I'm a quiz fan, so a daily quiz about my favorite team is right in my wheelhouse. Is anyone else playing Daily Walkoff? There's a new game every day and you can choose any MLB team. You can change the team by clicking on the arrow next to the team name. You have to sort twelve players into the correct category. The categories change daily.

I'm just going with this from the STL Post-Dispatch. I think "greatest impact" is doing some work here.

Quote

Jane Forbes Clark, who chairs the Hall of Fame board, said in a statement that the Hall “has always maintained that anyone removed from Baseball’s permanently ineligible list will become eligible for Hall of Fame consideration.” She added that the next time players who had their “greatest impact on the game prior to 1980” can be consideration is in December 2027.

The Historical Overview Committee will develop an eight-person ballot that is presented to the Classic Baseball Era Committee. Rose and Jackson could both be on that ballot and with support of 75% or more of the committee receive induction in August 2028.

More information about the Classic Era committee and process, for anyone interested. Honestly it seems like the HOF could pretty easily keep them out of they wanted, even now. They control who is in the nominating group, as well as who is on the committee.

This would be great fun if it didn't point out how little attention to detail I pay.

Tim Kurkjian once said in Frank Robinson’s presence that he would vote Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame (which, Timmy no!) and Tim said Frank exploded on him and said that he would never again attend the Hall for any reason if Pete Rose was in the Hall of Fame.

Moot point now, unfortunately, but maybe there are others who think like Frank.

12 of 16 votes are needed to pass and apparently the last time Clemens and Bonds were voted on they received like four.

If the PED crew continues to be a moral line in the sand not to be crossed but an admitted statutory rapist is fine the relevancy of the HOF is irrevocably tarnished.

Hey now he didn't know she was 14 he thought she was totally legal at 16 even though he has over 30. (Heavy on the sarcasm)

Pete Rose is great ball player ..one of the greatest of all time but he is a terrible  man who broke a cardinal sin in baseball. Both of those things can be true .  Even when given chances from MLB to repent and ways to get back in good standing   ,which included stop doing signings in casinos he never did and in his book he admitted he bet to baseball be never should remorse.

Ultimately the Hall of Fame is a muesum and their probably a way to acknowledge his accomplishments as the all time hit leader without enshrining him to the Hall of Fame.

And that's the big issue here.  The HOF is full of racists and scumbags.  Being an amoral and possibly even criminal scumbag in your personal life and getting in are not mutually exclusive to a lot of voters as long as you don't cheat (unless you're someone like Gaylord Perry).

I'm fine with this. I think the PEDS users should go in after they die, too. I'm not even a fan of Rose (fully agreed with his being banned), McGwire, Bonds, Clemens et al, but the idea that the Hall of Fame will never have some of the greatest players included is a little bizarre to me. Not getting in while they're alive, not getting that ceremony and publicity and all that, is sufficient punishment in my view - and of course, include on their displays why they weren't admitted until after their deaths.

In case you need to be mad: I’ve seen a post from Trevor Bauer wondering when he’ll be welcomed back now that Pete Rose is no longer banned.

I'm already angry.  In addition to the reasoning here, I'm even more irate because I actually forgot that Trevor Bauer existed as a human being on this planet.  I'm not joking either.

I don’t know if this means that Lantern and I need to duel behind the stables, but ESPN has declared that Mets-Yankees is one of baseball’s hottest rivalries but I don’t see it?

It’s early in the season, but they are two of the best teams in the majors. Also, I know Yankees fans are going to bitch about Juan Soto and how the Mets overspent to get him. You know, like the butthurt buffoons that they are. 😜

As far as Interleague rivalries go, it is one of the big rivalries, for sure. It's definitely one this season with both NY teams leading their respective divisions. It should be a very competitive series. Always a good show.

Yankees fans are going to let Juan Soto hear from them, no doubt, but if history holds true there'll be plenty of Mets fans at the Stadium to cheer him on. I wonder if the Bleacher Creatures have something special planned. 😄 If I were at the Stadium, I'd give him some applause. He did help the Yankees get back to the World Series. Honestly, I'm glad he made the decision he did, because the Yankees wouldn't be in first place in the AL East without Max Fried and Cashman would never have had the money to get Fried if they'd spent the insane amount of money they'd have needed to get Soto to stay. Win-win for both NY teams.

Let's Go Yankees!

(And tomorrow, that cheer at YS will be echoed by Let's Go Mets. Always fun to hear.)
