Guests include double Oscar winner Sean Penn, talking about his brilliant career and action thriller The Gunman; comic actress Celia Imrie, appearing in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel; and top comedian Ross Noble, about to join musical hit The Producers. Plus music and chat from Kelly Clarkson, who performs Heartbeat Song.

I sympathize with Kelly Clarkson.  Clearly there IS a problem though.  She should be getting sympathy for it though, not crass jokes.  Considering that she was probably already 25 pounds overweight before the pregnancy (which was fine--that amount really was no big deal and if people snarked on her then, then they're just assholes), she's headed into dangerous territory with her weight with another 76 pounds or so.  I mean she's only 5' 3" according to Mr. Google, and 100 pounds at that height?  Bad bad bad.

(here's the wrong way to handle the issue, from a monster named Katie Hopkins -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2963280/Did-eat-backing-singers-Katie-Hopkins-causes-outrage-Twitter-criticises-Kelly-Clarkson-s-weight.html )

I've never seen Kelly Clarkson interviewed. She's delightful. I love how down-to-earth she is.

On the other hand, there's Sean Penn. At least he was smiling, but he sucks at telling stories. If he were in the Red Chair, I'd flip him. Also, I hate that he kept flipping people. I know other guests have done that just to do it, but I don't find it funny, not when the person in the chair hasn't done anything to deserve it.

Ross Noble was funny. I liked his joke about getting in shape thru Shovelicizing.

I think I could listen to Celia Imrie for an entire show. I love her voice, and she's eloquent and witty.

Now my big question: Are we in the States going to get all the previous 2015 eps that haven't aired yet here?

So good to see Graham back!  He's just SO quick-witted.  I laughed hysterically at his reaction when Celia Imrie inadvertently left him out of her list of good-looking men in the vicinity.

Loved Kelly Clarkson.  Her comment that her baby was just so much better than every other baby was adorable.  As for her weight, she'll lose it in time.  She was a pretty, slightly overweight singer before, and now she's a pretty, overweight singer.  Both versions make me like her a lot.

Sean Penn seemed so out of place.  It was weird, it wasn't like he wasn't trying (like Harrison Ford often does), it's just that his version of trying seemed so painful and out of character.  I don't know what happened to him over the course of his career to make him so ... grizzled ... for lack of a better word.  His story about being an extra and not wanting to break character was funny, but it explains a lot about him.

Yay for the BBCA return of Graham!

I dunno.  She's right to not be concerned with any exact number with her weight, and certainly has every right to be angry at people making horrible jokes about it, but at the same time I wonder if she's not to some extent using it as an excuse.  Which is totally her right, but just from the peanut gallery, and because she's a very likable sort I wish the best for, I kinda wish if that's true that wasn't the case.  I mean there's a difference between being overweight and telling people to fuck off about it, and being obese.  And again, with her height, I think she's certainly crossed the line to obesity, and it's been 8 or 9 months since the kid was born.  Nobody should expect or demand she be a twig, or even back to her pre-baby weight (which remember, was already like 25 pounds overweight), but putting on three times that amount on top of that, and 9 months later at least appearing like she's still carrying the full 100 extra pounds?  She's a public figure going into a major record release and tour, so people are gonna notice, but even moreso I hope you're actually right and she is slowly talking it off (admittedly too slowly for us to notice, however).

I do suppose part of her attitude is probably shaped by the pressures she had after she won Idol to look like this:

I've always wondered if she has a love/hate relationship with this song/video.  Arguably it's what took her to a much higher level of fame than her initial releases, but it depended on a lot of sex appeal for it's success.

I adore Kelly Clarkson. She is, or appears to be, down to earth and as regular as one cane be after becoming famous. Don't care about her size, big or small. She's lovely.

I deeply despise Sean Penn. Almost any other celebrity tossing folks out of the red chair like that, might have been amusing to me. But from him, I thought was a total dick move. His stories were horrible. Hated him. I almost skipped the show because he was going to be on.

Ross Noble I enjoyed. I started paying more attention to him after seeing him on a previous Graham show and he was delightful then. That's what I enjoy about Graham's show, it broadens my US-centric celebrity view.

Celia Imrie was great too. I loved how when Kelly came out she said I loved you in Calendar Girls.

Would have been a great couch without that Sean Penn.

I just enjoy Kelly's personality and genuineness.  What she weighs is between her, her family, and her health care advisors, and matters nothing to me.  I think it's sad that this is what people are focusing on, rather than her talent and her recordings.  I'm glad it didn't come up on Graham's show. There's so much more to people than how much they weigh.

I was more upset about Kelly's dark roots than I was about her weight. Because roots can be fixed in a couple of hours, yo!

I've never seen baby-sized headphones before. Cute!

I reallyreallyreally wanted Graham to ask Sean about Madonna. Only Graham could get away with it, and if he didn't, that'd be great tv. (Do we think Sean dropped in on Madge while he was in town?) I for one am weary of the whole Geezers with Guns genre, and it's only just started. Ugh.

(edited)

As someone who's close to Sean Penn's age, I don't mind the geezers with guns genre, though I'd like to see more women kick ass.

Kelly's dark roots

They were pretty tragic. But she has an 8-month-old kid. I cut her a little slack. Her daughter is adorable.

Penn was a jackass with the Red Chair folks.

I know Sean Penn's a d-bag, but he's still kind of hot. I laughed when he called it the "geriatrics with guns" genre; I think it showed he had a sense of humor about it.

I liked all the other guests too, including Kelly Clarkson (she was great on the pilot episide of "The Crazy Ones," Robin Williams's sitcom).

Agreed, Kelly is awesome.    I thought Penn was going to choke when she just went in for a kiss as if he were a regular actor, instead of a pompous ass.  I couldn't care less what size she is. But her hair and outfit were horrid. She needs a stylist, not a personal trainer.  Before I get slammed for being shallow - these are simple fixes that don't involve changing who she is, or investing her valuable and limited personal time to look her best.  Just throw some money at the problem.

Katie Hopkins is a sub-human (most Brits know that already and didn't need the latest thing to learn that). I actually do think Kelly might have a legit weight issue, but the last thing anyone should be doing is mocking her for it.  It's never healthy to shame people into weight loss--it just makes things worse or leads to other more destructive behaviors.  Hopkins saw an opportunity to get international press and took it--I bet it was totally calculated on her part.

I've thought for years she needed a new stylist -- she seems to always be in the least flattering outfit possible, no matter what size.
