Castle is hired to uncover if a client's husband is having an affair, but the case takes a shocking turn when Castle witnesses the client's murder - by her husband. But with no proof that the killing took place, Castle and Beckett must investigate to expose the truth.

The one thing that really throws things off is the suspect telling Castle: "You'll never prove it!" Because you know that doesn't make a person want to really nail you to the wall. I like they are going with the classic Hitchcock and Suberbia spin on this but at the same time. I hope they don't do: "Castle is seeing things." It should be more: "We believe you but we need evidence and you have to be very careful finding it."

They already did that - with his birthday "Lives of Others" murder. I agree that it would be a much better story if this time around they believe him (and maybe mention that this isn't a setup like his birthday) and then work with him to prove the guy guilty.

I don't want this to come over like some tired rehash of TLOO but this time with an actual body.

As I mentioned on the 7.12 thread when I saw the promo I thought if they don't have Castle at the very least ask Beckett even jokingly if this is yet another set up I'll be disappointed. Especially since the circumstances are very similar. There's his enforced absence from the precinct, he's not stupid he must know they feel sorry for him with time on his hands and very few decent cases, to have him fail to mention it would feel like an obvious miss.

Has this played yet? CTV was rerunning Clear and Present Danger (which I did not appreciate enough first time around). But we can get ABC here in Victoria BC, so maybe I was just watching the wrong channel?

Nope the new ep is next monday. It was a rerun here too. Even the show's twitter tweeted about the rerun.

So other than the fact that Castle went willingly chasing after someone he believed to be a murderer, I liked this one.

I like that this case put doubt in his head about being a PI (starting to segue him back into the precinct for good?).

I like that there's continuity in Castle's wardrobe - this is the forth time he's worn that soft grey button down shirt. (He also wears it in Time of our Lives, I noticed today, so it predates him being a PI.)

I liked that this was outside the formulaic box and gave Castle and Beckett some nice scenes that weren't in an interrogation room or break room. Plus, supportive Beckett is great. I love her a lot.

The side-banter with Ryan and Espo and the dating site was fun, too. Of course Ryan and Jenny would create a dating profile for him ... and of course Ryan would be the one to manage it. I laughed.

I gave up on this show but tune in here and there.  I came back to watch the P.I. storyline and I'm liking how it's going.  I missed a few episodes this year but the stuff I've seen has been entertaining, much more entertaining than the formula they've been using before.  Castle working in the precinct wasn't interesting to me anymore and I appreciate the shake up even if it's temporary.

I like the idea of Castle with his own cases but with Beckett and the team still part of it all.  Also liked that Castle while right about a lot can have a hard time with this new job and make some mistakes.

I thought that lawyer was suspicious I didn't predict the twists and turns the episode would take or her reasoning for killing these people.   This was fun to watch.

I liked that too, but I also liked that we did see them working together and talking about the case.  Something about them together just elevates those scenes.  Beckett with Espo or Ryan just never matches them.  But I also feel like something was slightly off with the episode, at least the begining.  Maybe just because it was darker than I expected based on the episode description.  But I do really like supportive Beckett too, she was willing to look into the case when no one else believed him and she was encouraging him to keep with the PI stuff.

I suspected the lawyer from the first time we saw her, but I also was interested in the case and seeing exactly how it would play out.  It was much less cookie-cutter than we usually get with the cases. I was actually with Castle about Eva not really being dead and didn't predict who she was working with and all that.

I'm just going to pretend that Beckett would be able to work a case in a totally different jurisdiction.  They kept mentioning how it wasn't her case, but then just ignoring that and having them keep working the case.  And I guess there were no other murders this week.  Very convenient.  TV rules, I guess.

I also like that they are remembering Castle/Beckett are newlyweds and at least referencing sexy times.  I think that's three episodes in a row.

I always wonder, how many homicides are in New York any given year? And how many would fall in Beckett's jurisdiction? And how many of those would Beckett and Ryan and Espo get? I always kinda thought that there would be less than they need to make a weekly show, so I always kinda liked the idea of a box episode where they're making crap up, bored, because there's no murder. So I buy that Beckett's got some time to help Castle out, even if - technically - she wasn't supposed to. Or could she, if she got the other Detective's go-ahead.

Speaking of, I liked Westchester Detective.

Count me in as someone who also liked Castle's theory that Eva wasn't dead. I was a bit sad for him when they found out she was, because it seems like Castle's fellow students don't have the best track records - they're either murdered or murderers.

I do too! I loved how quickly she jumped to Castle's defense when the detective was all skeptical about what he saw, and also that even though they had no proof that the husband's coworker was involved, she immediately agreed to check his alibi AND told Espo that Castle has been right too many times to just dismiss his theory out of hand. All of it gave me warm fuzzies.

This. So much this. Ryan and Espo are my favorite TV bromance, and the dating site profile thing was too funny!

Couldn't agree with you more. I was pretty well giving up on Castle until the PI storyline. Really giving new life to the series for me.

According to Wikipedia there were 328 homicides in NYC in 2014, which is a record low.  But I think that that's cases declared homicides, there are people that turn up dead that the NYPD investigates only to find out they were suicides or accidents.  It comes out to about 1 a day and Beckett would get assigned to some of the ones that happen in the 12th's jurisdiction (since there are other detectives there). I don't know how big a precinct is, but the 12th is apparently oddly shaped since they have crime scenes all over the place.

I buy that she would have down time, I just think it's convenient that it happened at the exact same time that Castle witnesses this crime.  IRL she would also have to testify in court for all these cases she solves and the only time that has been referenced was in Headhunters (another time when they needed Beckett to have free time).

I know I didn't want his friend to be dead, but I also didn't want his friend to have been conning him.  Unfortunately, we got both.  But maybe she wasn't as good a friend as the one who was a killer.

Did not like Castle running off after the killer after he just mysteriously disappeared for 3 months.

Did like Beckett pointing out that Castle's wild theories are sometimes right, so it worth looking into.   That wasn't just a wife defending her husband, that is a smart detective who goes with what works.

For awhile I wondered if this was Castle getting Beckett back for the Lives of Others prank, but obviously too many outside people were involved for him to be like "sike!"

Besides the illegal aspect of wasting real police officers' time, I thought his note to meet him at the office could be the big surprise moment.

I didn't like him running off and I wasn't even thinking about the 3 months.  I was thinking he should call 911.  Or at least call Beckett  I mean, if I see someone dragging a bloody body somewhere I am calling the cops and running in the opposite direction.  He doesn't even have a gun to lose like Beckett does.

I wonder if his friend knew he would run after them.  Cause if he called the cops right away it could have put a kink in her plans, they might not have gotten away.

This ep went by so quick. Poor Castle hs friends. If TPTB introduce another person from Castle's hs yrs hopefully they fair better than the 2 we've met. I like that Beckett has got Castle back.

The Ryans making a match.com profile for Espo has gotta be one of the best hilarious subplots. I like how Beckett and Ryan were tag teaming to get Espo to go for a blind date scene in the beginning. It really showed their sibling/family like relationship vibe. Plus it was nice to see Espo not mean to Castle. TPTB should just bring back the transit cop for him to date.

Someone on Tumblr mentioned this and I did love this symmetry. Beckett making dinner waiting for Castle to turn up and not turning up and then getting the phone call - mirroring the night of her mother's murder (it also mirrored Castle in Beast waiting in the loft except without the phone call part).

They need to bring Marisa back for Espo. Did like the scene of the trio in the break room.

“Where’s Beckett?” Oh is it next week yet?

Gates is on vacation, how convenient for everyone, especially Castle who is back like he never left.

We're napping now not fonting. Okay.

Knock em dead babe... I love supportive Beckett.

Eva. Old School Friend Turns Up. Please not another one about to screw him over.

Espo is dating again, so soon? Does Tamala know?

I adore serious, reflective Castle wish we could see more of this.

Castle (very) amateur sleuthing in the woods, has he learnt nothing?  Was that meant to be funny because it made him look stupid. He even leaves his keys in the car so they can take it. The only smart thing he did there was try and call Beckett but I don't like it when the writers may Castle look foolish and out of his depth like that.  He might as well have had a sign stuck to his forehead saying KILL ME NOW!

It's the Jessica Fletcher Effect. Heh.

As soon as he heard the scream I was thinking: Well, if it was me, I'd call 911. And then he jumps the frickin' fence! Oy. Call 911 already! And then I'm thinking:

Did not like Castle running off after the killer after he just mysteriously disappeared for 3 months...

So by the time he was out in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service, I had very little sympathy for him--especially since the nice folks who clunked him over the head and stole his car were kind enough to leave him a turned on flashlight/torch with fabulous batteries. Plus, since it's TV, I knew he wouldn't have a TBI from being knocked unconscious. Or maybe that's why he has no sense anymore.</snark-rant>

I actually really liked the way the twisty plot was woven, and, like others, it was nice to see supportive Beckett. They have a really nice Hart To Hart thing going.

Old Man Winter is better at writing their intimate moments, none of this frantic, over rehearsed looking grappling but small gestures and slower more tender moments of the kind I can enjoy than sexytimes which are anything but on this show.

As soon as the lawyer waltzed in to stop the mistress talking, I knew it was her, just the way acted. *Sigh* I hate it when they make it so obvious like that.

They love their cronuts.

What's going on with the pillows? First they have these fancy covers on then which they're sleeping on, then they're ordinary ones the next morning. And these days I half expect to see Kate in a scarf and coat in bed she's so buttoned up in bed wear.

“I believe he’s been right too many times to not consider it.” Supportive Beckett... can't get over her like this when I think about how she was before at times. I hate doubting Beckett and it's good to see this side of her on a consistent basis having confidence in her husband when it comes to the serious stuff.

I was surprised there was no mention of Castle’s birthday present of the fake murder by anyone, that seemed like a miss to me by the writing team.

Oh Eva. Poor Castle, I bet this has put him off any future old school reunions.

Kiss at the end was the best one in a while, nice and slow and tender, like the gentle swaying back and forth in the chair, Katic got it just right.

Espo's dating life as the B story with Ryan was kind of funny but that's enough for now.

Poor Castle he got played and now he's having second thoughts aaaahhhh the start of his return to the precinct kicks into gear. Just in time for the return for 3XK.

Too many red herrings piled on for me to completely enjoy this episode in trying to twist and turn constantly it felt predictable trying to seed doubt plus I immediately spotted the killer due to the direction and acting. It was solid though and the time passed quickly watching it. I thought they over did the Hitchcock references a bit too much. The Caskett moments were all solid, the best thing was supportive Beckett and serious Castle and Fillion does hurt and betrayal so well. Feels like a good lead in to the turmoil that's to come. The arc is slowly running out of steam though with ideas on how to get them together but they've kept things relatively fresh each week I have to say but things are obviously coming to a close on Castle's PI career (at least for now).  I do wonder if Castle PI will get another outing next season.

I wasn't surprised, no one cares about Castle's disappearance least of all the man himself and the people around him affected by it.

Her support has been the highlight of this season so far. I enjoy the show so much more when they are a team. I have to say even with the mythology hiccups that so far this season has been much better than the last 2 for me. I just wish they would make the cases more interesting.

I prefer them as a team always, that's where the magic is and supportive Beckett is the best. Which is why this arc despite managing to get around the issue pretty well can't continue forever unless Gates takes long service leave or something.

You're not the only one that wishes the cases would improve, that's been an ongoing issue for the last few seasons, the quality has obviously dipped, yet it's not as if all the old writers have disappeared although there have been some departures which has impacted negatively there, they need to stop being complacent and up their game.

They're banning them over here too, in fact they're banning any kind of bulb that gives off a decent light, it's hurting the environment apparently well I don't care I want to be able to see and not break my neck falling down the stairs. Now all I get offered is those energy saving ones that you switch on and you have to wait ten minutes before you can see anything through the gloom. I guess they use those a lot on Castle too, they can last ten years apparently.

What a good episode, some nice twists and turns and look, they finally are acting like a team again. I mean, as Beckett said: "How many times has he been right?" Exactly, drives me crazy when writers act like these characters haven't been together for years and so forth. Why I was so upset with the season premiere and of course with the DA restricting Castle to the department unless it directly involves him. He had most of the story and structure together and I like that Rick is feeling the problems with being a PI and playing cop. It has a lot of dark sides to it and using of clients and even forces. I think the biggest problem with the story was the husband acting so cocky. I get he knew his wife was playing him and Castle but he also knew that it played into his double affairs and back to his first wife so he tried to cover his tracks with the false alibis and so forth. The problem was, he brought it all on himself.

I'm really enjoying this season of Castle, now that the "Castle mythology" is being ignored in the best use of bad continuity in TV history. The episode wasn't perfect - as has been mentioned, Castle not calling 9-1-1, chasing off after criminals as though he's Nancy Drew, Beckett being welcomed on cases far outside her jurisdiction and using NYPD resources including Ryan and Esposito to indulge her husband's case, etc., did make me roll my eyes. But when I remember season 4 e.g., those are minor observations and not even complaints.

Good things: plot. How about that? I didn't suspect the lawyer of being anything but a set-up so that the rich boyfriend would make his girlfriend take the fall for him. The motive was a last-minute addition, rather than a clue that the audience could use to figure things out and the initial restaurant conversation with the partner was one of the better red herrings I've seen, so overall solid writing, IMO.

Also: relationships. Castle and Beckett acting as though they're in a grown-up relationship, compromising, supporting, even getting on each other's nerves a little bit and, of course, having sex. Even if it's yukked up as nap time. Ryan and Esposito as proper best friends, with Esposito as funny, vulnerable and macho, Ryan as funny, supportive and every-so-slightly manipulative, but having it backfire with a possible couples weekend from hell. All four characters working together as a team. Good times.

Shallow: did anybody else think "A Buick? Castle is driving a f**king Buick?". No? just me? I need to take that man car-shopping... I didn't like the Mercedes, either.

Link to comment

Well, as far as jurisdiction is concerned, I handwave that off by t he fact that, while the incident happened in Westchester, a great many of the people involved (the husband's company and partners, the mistress) were in Manhattan and thus were more easily questioned by Beckett's team.  I know, making sense is not part of TV.

About the sexytimes, I've seen quite a few people suggesting that the reason we're getting more of these moments suddenly is because they're paving the way for a "pregnant Beckett" storyline later this season. I don't sense that at all. Hey may be they just like having sex!  Why does everything increasingly get linked to babies when it comes to their active (off screen) sex life. I'd like to enjoy them just being newlyweds and happy for now.

Shallow: did anybody else think "A Buick? Castle is driving a f**king Buick?". No? just me? I need to take that man car-shopping... I didn't like the Mercedes, either.

Oh, I wondered about the car too.  I'm not too familiar with American cars but didn't think a Buick was something someone like Castle would go for... unless he wanted a less conspicuous car for tailing people as a PI?  Or something other than the Ferrari to stick the boys with next time they are mean to him? ;)   I would think something like a Lexus or a BMW or a Mercedes if he's not avoiding those would be more the kind of car for someone like Castle.  I'd like Castle to have a stylish car if he's not allowed to have stylish clothes.  Of course the simple answer is: product placement. ;)  That, or budget issues. ;)  Castle has been wearing the same coat for 3 episodes now... not that one can really notice it since there's obviously no money to pay the electricity bills either.  I swear, one of these days, it'll be so dark we won't be able to see the body. ;)  Or maybe all the money went towards Beckett's lovely cashmere coat(s)?  The one she wore as she sat on Castle's lap at the end was nice and probably cost an arm and a leg or more!

But back to the episode.  Another solid effort from TPW & the newbie writer.  One of the more twisty COTWs, possibly too much so, but I won't complain about that since the COTWs are generally so thin.  Anyone else thinking that the husband had a 3rd affair with the lawyer?  Or that there was some lesbian relationship going on somewhere?  At least that's what I was thinking as the twists kept coming.  The lawyer pinged on my radar too for some reason.

I've liked what they've done with the PI arc so far.  They've had their fun and games, and now they've touched on the darker side as well.  One of my favourite bits of Castle from early on was when in the 2nd episode, I think, there was a scene where Castle realised the tough part of Beckett's job, in informing the victim's family about the death and that it wasn't all fun and games.  The scene gave them both a bit more depth.  Same thing here with Castle not wanting to get involved in cheating confirmation kind of work (but the touch on the thigh did it for the old softie, good thing her hand didn't go up any further heh!) and him realising the ambiguity and the cost in a PI's work.  I loved Beckett's advice to him at the end too.  It made me kind of wish they'd talked about Beckett's DC job in the same way too.  I would have found that mature approach way more enjoyable than the manufactured angst that we got.  Beckett being so supportive throughout was really wonderful to see and it really helps cement their sense of couplehood.  Bringing him coffee too.  Attention to the little things is nice to see.  They feel really solid now so I really hope there's not some stupid angst dividing them up when the mythology inevitably pops up again.  I want them as a team.

Napping was cute.  Especially in Castle's lap in his office.  But between fonting and napping, I wonder if they ever just cut to the chase and say they want each other. Oh, and not a fan of Beckett's PJs...Luke should just stick to one style already. ;)  And I think it would've been less noticeable if they'd toned down Stana's eye makeup for when she was supposed to be asleep.

Anyone else wondered why Ryan and Jenny didn't just invite Castle and Beckett to the ski weekend?  Or are they not on those terms?  The Ryan/Esposito story was alright, and Esposito wasn't too much of a jerk but I thought he was a bit inconsiderate in inviting Trixie (seriously?) to the weekend when he knew the Ryans wouldn't care for it.

Enjoyed the Hitchcockian vibe throughout and the cinematography was quite atmospheric.

Is Castle being a PI an aphrodisiac for Beckett or what?  Hehe.  Not complaining, keep it coming.  And pay the electricity bills, please!

I liked the way Beckett dragged out the "with my huuuuusband" when she was in his office stacking her paperwork. Is that the first time she's said it? Any way even if it wasn't it made me smile.

I've forgotten this was co-written with the newbie writer, not sure how much input she had with Old Man Winter but they did a good job with the Castle and Beckett dynamic, watching it again the relationship feels really solid - warm, natural and supportive which is what I always wanted it to be. I hope when this PI arc ends they can keep that going for the rest of the season. I'd wish they would tone it down on the childish innuendos about taking lots of "naps" etc, oh please let them talk about wanting sex like the grown ups they are even if we never get to see anything. It's a 10 p,m, show for crying out loud at least give the audience that.

I like that there's continuity in Castle's wardrobe - this is the forth time he's worn that soft grey button down shirt. (He also wears it in Time of our Lives, I noticed today, so it predates him being a PI.)

I wish they would forget about maintaining continuity in his (fuddy duddy) wardrobe and let me see more of it in the writing sometimes.

Well, I'm only hanging in because of the PI stuff - if he goes back to the precinct with the same configuration there as before, I won't be watching again.

I like him being his own boss as a PI and (theoretically) not being told by police officers what he can/should/etc do and not do even if it did happen here a bit in this episode.

Just seems like they are setting the stage to have him hang up his PI gig.  Hope not.

And, for a change, how refreshing his wife/long-time partner actually was supportive and didn't need to be dragged there kicking and screaming.

Oh, I loved that too!  Been waiting for Beckett to call Castle her husband and I think that was the first time.  If I were Castle, I'd have swept the files off the desk and napped right there. :P

And agreed about all the undesirable people that have popped up from Castle's past by now.  They should crack a dark joke about that.  The poor guy was subconsciously influenced to become a crime writer when surrounded by all those with criminal tendencies in his past.  No wonder he doesn't have any friends anymore.  ;)

Problem is, if it wasn't for the NYPD, he never would have solved the case and would have to go back to taking photos of cheating spouses rather than anything really challenging. And there's not much of a story in that. Gates can't be away every week to allow him to make use of their best homicide squad for his PI business.

But yes product placement. I'm a big believer in it as it helps finance production which is good for my business and the shows I'm a fan of. But it should be done realistically.

I guess I didn't notice the Buick as product placement ... I'll also admit I car almost 0% about cars, as long as they're comfortable, run, and get me from point A to point B.

The worst product placement Castle has done was back in late season 3 when they mysteriously had Castle switching between his iPhone and a Windows phone. And whenever they had him using his Windows phone it was always in closeup. It was awful and obvious. Ugh. I still cringe.

As soon as the lawyer waltzed in to stop the mistress talking, I knew it was her, just the way acted. *Sigh* I hate it when they make it so obvious like that.

I didn't think it was so obvious. I just thought the sleazy husband was pulling the "I'm important" card by giving his mistress use of his lawyer.

Anyone else wondered why Ryan and Jenny didn't just invite Castle and Beckett to the ski weekend?

Remember what happened the last time they tried winter sports? I'm pretending Ryan floated the idea to Beckett and she reminded him that Castle's ego couldn't take another hit like that.

I did wonder why they didn't just invite Castle and Beckett, but maybe they didn't want to be rude and uninvite Esposito?  What did make me laugh was Beckett saying how Espo needed to get a date because he and Lanie broke up "yet again."  Here tone is pretty much how I would sound if I said was I was thinking about "Esplanie" out loud.

I didn't think it was rude of Esposito to invite a girl they might not like when they were the ones that got him on the dating site in the first place.  But since they had a girl in mind I'm not sure why they needed the profile.

Why does everything increasingly get linked to babies when it comes to their active (off screen) sex life.

It happens in real life too.  People get married and they get asked when they'll have kids.  Shippers are just like your annoying relatives, only worse.

And, for a change, how refreshing his wife/long-time partner actually was supportive and didn't need to be dragged there kicking and screaming.

People are acting really surprised by this, but Beckett is usually very supportive of him, at least she has been since they got together.  The only times she didn't was in The Lives of Others (which was a set up) and in Driven (which was very exceptional circumstances/emotions involved).  The show has often focused on Beckett's drama and we see Castle supporting her, and now Castle has some drama and we're getting to see that Beckett is in fact just as supportive.  Which I agree is really nice, but it doesn't surprise me at all.

I don't think they had a girl in mind - they created a match.com profile for him to find him someone to take on the ski weekend, but they couldn't tell him that, so they made up the story about the girl being their friend and wanting to get to know Espo after they narrowed down choices to who they thought was "appropriate".

I agree. I'm not surprised either. But people (a select few?) made a bunch of noise about how it always seemed like Castle was a puppy following his owner around and how it seemed like Castle was more into Beckett than she was him, so it's nice to see that argument be put to rest (if it was ever an argument anyway; I never really felt like it was a good one).

Ah, yes, that makes much more sense.

Driad. Thanks for Lee's review.

Cliche’ #2. The old “attorney bursts into the interview” routine. Think about it. Who let her inside, and how did she know where or which room to enter?

This made me laugh because yeah it happens a lot on shows and it does cross my mind.

*By the way, I am a bit excited about seeing Nathan Fillion on The Big Bang Theory. That should be a hoot.

Agree with this, I hope I get a chance to see it somehow.

The last red herring/suspect seemed very awkward, like the writers merely tossed him in the script because they thought they needed to fill a void. Seemed forced and weird and really didn’t fit into the plot.

That's what lowered the bar on this episode even though the case did hold my interest more but it got silly as they piled the suspects on "it was Eva!" "it was Cole!" "no it was Eva!" and so on, I wish they had cut back on the number of red herrings this week because the case was the first one in a while that held my attention for more than five minutes.

Castle made a good point when he said Cole was too cocky and narcissistic to kill himself. That’s typically true in real life.

I didn't think about it on first watch but yeah he wasn't the type he loved himself waaay too much.

But that's Espo for you. That's a pretty stupid thing to do considering it could ruin it for both couples, I know it's only a weekend away but why you would want to increase the chances of having a crappy time?  But that aside I like it when we find out they're socialising together outside of work as friends be it holidays, dinner etc makes it more realistic. Pity we never see anything of these events but they're not case related so hearing about it will have to be good enough.

And agreed about all the undesirable people that have popped up from Castle's past by now.  They should crack a dark joke about that.  The poor guy was subconsciously influenced to become a crime writer when surrounded by all those with criminal tendencies in his past.  No wonder he doesn't have any friends anymore.  ;)

Heh, yeah that explains it, the guy should have a serious complex by now.  It's getting kind of eye roll worthy though whenever an "old" buddy of his arrives you just know they're going to turn out to be killers or at least up to no good and about to take advantage of a sadly often gullible Castle.

This is the way they write this show. What happened in previous episodes does not figure into the current one (unless it is a deliberate follow up). The audience remembers but the characters don't. From Castle's point of view this is probably the first time this has ever happened. It sometimes makes the characters seem awful stupid but with some of the plot lines they come up with Beckett or Castle being stupid & forgetful is essential.

I know there was Damian Westlake and Sophia, but am I forgetting someone else? I mean most people don't know anyone who turns out to be a killer, but it doesn't seem like that high a number for a TV character.
