S19.E05: Week 3: Movie Night

Last season, after the switch-up, many felt that Drew made it obvious that he enjoyed working with Whitney much more than Cheryl. It didn't help that he got some of his best scores that week with Whitney and the judges praised her a lot for what she was able to bring out of Drew. There seemed to just be a consensus that Drew and Cheryl didn't exactly like each other very much or at least he didn't like her.

I forgot to mention that as adorable as I thought Mark and Sadie's dance was and as much as I enjoyed it, I honestly thought it was a Foxtrot for much of the dance, then saw some elements that sort of looked like a VW so then I got confused and wasn't sure what style they were doing. With the announcer guy gone and I missed when the number was put on screen, until I think CAI mentioned VW, I really couldn't tell that was the style they were doing. So as much as I enjoyed the dance, thought it was sweet and adorable, on a technical level I can't say I thought it was a very good Viennese Waltz.

Also, I don't think Whitney called Alfonso "fat ass"; she said she had been dragging his fat ass across the floor, which isn't really name calling. Plus, it was the first time I recall seeing some personality from Whitney, so that aspect was awesome.

Does anyone know why they aren't using the fabled Disembodied Englishman to intro the dances this year?

Loved the Badie Show; thanks for posting!

I've wondered if the show, going after a younger demo, wants to take the emphasis off of the ballroom/Latin style and it's requirements and place more emphasis on production values and just dancing. I think the show believes the younger demo is turned off by "stodgy" formal dancing filled with rules, so they are putting less and less emphasis on the actual style. Therefore we don't need someone announcing whether we are going to see a fox trot or waltz. It doesn't really matter even if we are left guessing when the pro bends the rules.

I don't know why the Disembodied Englishman (aka Alan Dedicoat) doesn't announce the dances, but he's still there (or pre-recorded for each show). I noticed he calls out each judge's name when they give their scores.  Maybe to save time? But how long does it take to say "Dancing the XX, YY and her partner ZZ"?

First time I've ever found Kevin Hart funny and charming to boot (normally I have no tolerance for him). And I love that he threw out the 10 for Tommy and Peta based on just a feel-good/entertainment rubric.

It may be premature to say this but lo and behold Julianne seems to actually be elevating the other judges' critiques. They're altogether more technical, on topic and concise. I also actually understood where CAI was coming from with her allusion to Yoda for Tommy.

I don't think they were booing because Bruno didn't get to speak. It goes uncommented on with everyone else. Plus, there was quite a bit of time before Tom asked for applause for the band.

Loud booing. I've never heard anything like that before. Erin and Tom both looked really embarrassed. But...why did it happen? I don't get it.

As for the dancing...I'm glad Val got the first set of 10s even though he couldn't get the dance cleared like Derek did (complete with Kelley's widow giving her blessing in person.) Both were good, but I found Val's more creative (then again, I'm -too- familiar with Kelly's original and missed some of my favorite elements, probably because, as others have said, he was limited by Bethany--who did well with it.) Also agree with the person upthread who said Val brings sex appeal and romantism to every dance and every partner while Derek is just "cute, very talented guy who's got a partner". I thought Val was gracious with Janel at JT and with Erin, but it would have been nice if his choreography got a little more praise from everyone. I thought Julianne would be doing more of that like Maks did when he judged, but so far... not so much. Still, she's better than I expected.

As for Erin, I think she's great as a host. Brings some intelligence that Brooke and Samantha never showed--really fast on her feet and tries to give some content and freshness to her backstage questions rather than Brooke's stale, "So, how did you feel out there (fill in contestant name)?" I think Erin is perfect for this and is quick to "get" anything Tom or others say to her. It's refreshing!

Anna talked about this on Afterbuzz and basically said the same.  They commented on how cute Sadie's dance was, but it wasn't really a VW.  I suspect Mark and some of the other pros took full advantage knowing Len would be away this past week so they were less likely to get called out on things like that.

The Afterbuzz people were also pretty dismissive of both perfect score dances as well.  They gave a lot of praise to Val and Derek, but it was a combo of thinking it was far too early for perfectly scored dances and thinking they both had some obvious mistakes that weren't mentioned.  It actually surprised me a bit how dismissive they were of Janel in particular, while still managing to endlessly praise Val.   Though I think some of it had to do with them knowing Janel's musical theatre background and that a musical theatre jazz number was basically her bread and butter.   With Bethany they just noted she was a half beat behind the whole time, which wasn't mentioned, and that they are having trouble connecting with her on any level.  They seem to all be on the Alfonso train at this point.

Kevin Hart annoyed the hell out of me with his constant yelling out of the scores.  It was cute the first time everyone was trying to channel Len, but by about the third time Kevin did it, I wanted to smack the living daylights out of him.

And Alfonso?  That "Dr. Evil" impression got old after about the second time you did it.  I got it -- your theme is taken from Austin Powers.  No need to beat me over the head with it.

I'm really glad to see Lea and Artem are still in this.  Artem's got the goods to keep delivering great routines that challenge and showcase Lea's talent, and I would like to see them make the finals, that's for sure.  It's just a pity that she's doing the show a year shy of October 2015 -- but I have to say, she looks better in 2014 than her character did in 2015I

Is it this version of DWTS that is having the viewers choose the music for the dances in two weeks?  Yeah, THAT'S going to work out well.  Ugh!

I disagree and I also disagreed with the Afterbuzz panel when they brought this up. I thought Sadie and Mark's Viennese Waltz was the best that night in balancing a good amount of technical content with creativity in portraying their movie. There was quite a bit of waltzing in both closed (at least 3 sections had dancing in ballroom hold) and open positions, port de bras, fleckrl (near the end where they are rotating in one spot), and some side-by-side processions you typically see in many V Waltzes.

They sure kept the "Raise the Paddle", that I posted about earlier, quiet last week. They didn't even mention it on air or give us any results, but as I feared that was probably just a test run. If the FAQs for this coming week are accurate, "Raise the Paddle" will count this week as part of the judges' scores. Maybe it won't happen or will only count for 1%, although it sure sounds like it will be 1/4 or 1/5 of the judges' score. I'm not sure if Len is back.

9. How does the ‘You Raise The Paddle’ scoring app work?

This season on Dancing With The Stars we are giving you the opportunity to be the judge and score each couple alongside the judges during the East/Central broadcast of the show. Visit http://abc.go.com/shows/dancing-with-the-stars/you-raise-the-paddle at 8et|7c to score the couples’ performances as they are showcased during the show. Your score will count towards the Judges’ overall score.

You must be logged in to your Facebook account to score. You may score each couple only once.

The scoring windows for each couple will open at the start of their performance and remain open for 2 minutes and 15 seconds, so stay tuned and keep your ‘You Raise The Paddle’ page open. The page will update automatically when it’s time to score each couple.

During the scoring window for each couple, you will see boxes numbered 1 to 10. To score the couple, select a number (10 being the highest, 1 being the lowest) and select the Submit button. You will then see a page thanking you for your score with the option to share the fact you scored on Facebook or Twitter. You do not have to share your score for it to register.

‘You Raise The Paddle’ scoring will not be open outside of the East/Central broadcast, so if you are viewing the page outside of the 8-10p ET/7-9p CT times you will not be able to play along.

10. How will the scoring work?

During each scoring window, select a score (10 being the highest, 1 being the lowest) and submit it. At the end of the scoring window for each couple we will calculate an average score, taken from all the audience scores. That score will then be combined with the scores from the other Judges during the 10.6.14 episode.
