S02.E04: Journey the Rivers of Iron

Recommended Posts

Murphy's Law keeps hitting Alex & Spencer over the head!  Seriously, can they not catch a break?  I want to see Spencer get home and help save the ranch, sooner rather than later!

Whitfield is one evil man.  He wouldn't even cover the poor prostitute with a blanket.  It appeared that Banner is beginning to see what an a**hole his boss is.

So, the "Train Station" stems from Donald Whitfield and the Dutton clan continues the tradition.

Does Taylor Sheridan know that capitalism goes beyond ski resorts and airports? He seems to be suffering from tunnel vision. 🙄

Zane undergoes a brain surgery and 10 minutes later he's back to normal. Okay. 🙄 What's with that sloppy bandage on his head?

FFS. Just get Spencer and Alex to Montana already!!!

Can you imagine the infection he would likely get under those unsterile conditions?  🙄

Yeah. Dr. Miller boils his tools and equipment in the water but the "head holder" and those belts are unsanitized.

There'll be no need for cranioplasty either to repair his skull.

Zane is such a tough guy who heals miraculously. 🙄

I don’t understand why Spencer jumped off the train in the middle of nowhere. Why didn’t he just push the dead bodies off the train and stay on it? Or why didn’t he just jump off the train earlier as soon as the group threatened him? I do like seeing him get out of the scuffles he gets into so skillfully. He’s a badass. But I’m afraid his luck is going to run out at some point.

I wonder what Alex is going to do for money now. I don’t think the mugger took her wedding ring so she might have to sell it.

Because if he pushed them off and he stayed on it, the bodies could be discovered and the police wire ahead to stop the train for the culprit.

If he jumped off, they might not be discovered until the train reached the ocean when he would be long gone.

Same complaint I’ve had all season. How many super evil mustache twirling villains can Spencer meet? Explain to me why the bad guys needed him to drive the booze truck? They had like 50 guys and the address of where it was going and put one of their guys in the car with him? And don’t get me started on the train hobo thing. Sigh.

Alex is a total bad ass however. Her walking thru that train car with her head held high was so good. Can we please just get these two to Montana already.

I love the slivers of life out on the ranch and how hard things were. We all know the Duttons keep their land, so the stakes for it being taken away from them are pretty much zero which reduces the tension in watching. It’s the journey, not the end result I guess, which is the fun.

I guess I just figured they wouldn’t be discovered because they were in the middle of nowhere. It’s possible someone in the caboose might see the bodies, but I’m not sure they could do much about it until they got to a station. I have a feeling the train didn’t have a wireless radio since they were fairly new at the time. Spencer could just jump off the train undetected at night before they got to the station.

Also, with the bodies left on the train, and that one officer knowing that Spencer hopped on the train, I’m worried that he’ll be wanted for murder now. By pushing the bodies off, he’s basically getting rid of the evidence. Assuming the bodies stay undiscovered for a while.

He could've thrown one off every few miles!  I don't know if that would've helped or made it worse, but knowing Spencer's luck, there'd be someone lurking in the bushes (another hobo, perhaps) and he'd be caught and hauled off to jail.  Seems like he's always in a no-win situation.

I'm with you though.  Maybe he should've ridden it out and jumped off in the dark of night.  Oh well, the writers want to make this journey as long and painful as they can!

If Spencer and Alex were to write a book about their adventures, here's some titles I was thinking of:

Spencer & Alex:  The Endless Journey

Spencer & Alex:  Ships, Robbers & Hobos. Oh my!

Spencer & Alex:  How to Avoid Beatdowns & Shootouts When Traveling.

Safari Tips:  Finding the Best Tree to Have Sex in While Avoiding a Lion.

Expand

Alex:   American Express Traveler's Checks.   Don't Leave Home Without Them.

Elsa Dutton:  The people in my family don't read travel books.  Dutton's lives are hard and they have no time for travel brochures, Harvey House suppers, or side excursions to see the the World's Biggest Ball of Twine in Kansas.   Duttons may die but we do not stop until we complete the journey.   Some say that our ancestor, Henry Hudson Dutton, did not disappear, but is still searching for a Direct Passage from Nova Scotia to Bozeman.

I don't have much to say about the episode itself, except that I really hope that Creighton finally realizes what he's done in tying himself to Whitfield.

So true. I did think of another option. He could have just held them at gun point in the beginning and made them all jump off. It’s kind of amazing he still has his rifle after everything he’s been through.

Exactly!  Didn't someone warn him about carrying it around (maybe the first city he was in?)  There's quite a bit of this show that is very far-fetched, but I try to look past it and just enjoy it for what it is!  It sure is fun to snark about it though!  😄

In addition, the train people back then weren’t going to put a lot of effort into investigating the deaths of three ‘hobos’ illegally riding the train.    They won’t know where it happened or who did it.  The supposed police officer can’t properly identify Spencer, nor would he really be able to identify which train/car he jumped on or that there were people already in it.   Who would even think to ask him?

Is it just me or is NOTHING happening on this show?   I think Odysseus made it back to Greece faster than Spencer getting to Montana.

And the hobos ... a few episodes ago, Spencer was winning bare-knuckle fights on the ship.   Now I'm supposed to believe he can't dispatch a couple of winos and a little girl-thing?   He didn't even have to kill them.  He could have booted them right out the door.
