My husband does this all the time with our son's friends. He references some TV show or something that was part of the popular culture before they were born and stuff like that. I keep saying "THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT".

BUT THEY SHOULD! My sister told me that we are invisible to the youngs. Blech!

My goodness, I am so not invisible to the youngs. By virtue of being my son's mother I am a minor celebrity, loved and feared in equal measure. And I keep up. One time I was at a social event with several youngs and one of them asked me if I was "familiar with the concept of shipping" and I laughed and laughed. Honey, I am not exactly in the home for Old Out of Touch Geezers.

Shipping??

Have they heard of the Pony Express and steamship freight? That's how we ordered our hoop skirts.

I worry sometimes that I'm using words that young people don't understand. it's hard being old!

I tell hilarious stories of my wild youth in the seventies, when you could smoke in bars and you could get a diaphragm for birth control.

One of the advantages of being an old person is that we remember how things were done pre-smartphone, and we can function without them. What do young people do when they don't have GPS? Do they even learn how to read maps? Where can you even get maps now?

My nieces mind was blown when I told her I travelled with y family  without a cell phone and used a printed map. Yes, we did get lost but sometimes getting lost is part of the fun.

Heck, I know who George Burns, Gracie Allen, Jackie Gleason, Imogene Coca, Stiller & Meara, Dick Cavett, Bette Davis, ect ect are. It seems it's fashionable to *not* know anything pre-2010.

But when we were kids they were still part of the popular culture. You saw them on Hollywood Palace or Ed Sullivan, or even The Jackie Gleason show. There were only three channels on TV so we saw all the old movies on Boston Movie time or equivalent after school.
