William Sadler really leaned into playing the grandpa-with-possible-early-stage-dementia. He's 74.

IRL Selena would've had a tooth knocked out, but then most people in these shows would.
Apparently lip lacerations only need stitches if they're longer than half an inch — in case anyone else was wondering.

The new Texan rookie in the trailer park should provide some laughs.

Hurray no Bailey again. Not even a mention.

It looks like James might be out of the picture too? Or maybe they haven't decided yet. Perhaps a writing/show-running response to demands for actor cuts without actually cutting him just yet?

The rookie with cancer? Why? Oh. Maybe also so they can tell the budget folks he's half on the chopping block? Do they know that feels kind of insulting to some cancer "survivors"? Or is it just me?

I laughed at Nyla ducking out the window to go to Angela and Wesley's.

Texas rookie in the trailer park with Smitty could possibly lead to laughs or disaster.  Does this mean he can drive his car to work now?

I don't even understand how a rookie with cancer isn't an automatic dismissal.  I suppose until his results are in, nothing could be done about removing him and we know Lucy's probably going to keep her mouth shut for the time being.

Glad Selena passed her rookie final.  The horror on Nolan's face when she pulled out the crystal and put it on the dash was amusing.

Not looking forward to the upcoming Bailey drama.

Well it's not exactly her final like a pilot taking a solo flight but she has reached the point that everyone expects her to pass probation.

I wasn't expecting Texas to just as easily mirror West with the station parking lot crew, or how did he not see them as he walked in to work those few days. But the I guess West didn't see them until the plot needed him to either.

That was a dedicated to their mission street gang. They were all ready to serve life on a vengeance murder, and fight their way through the police to do it.

If there's no money for an actor to be the Captain why even mention it. You might as well use the opportunity to distinguish LT Gray from Watch Commander Gray. With the kid's cancer probably returning and Juarez all but done I guess by the time Bailey comes back Sergeant Bradford takes over as the watch commander and the two surviving rookies stay as the FTO's.

If he can pass the physical endurance requirements, they would be liable for unlawful termination if they fired him for having cancer.
But if he shows up late again or is AWOL, yes, they would have cause to let him go, although his superiors might be able to offer a spot to him if/when he recovers.

The show started with a Boot could be bounced at anytime. The Captain overriding then Sergeant Gray in the first episode over Nolan and Nolan version 2 over an accidental discharge of his weapon. While many were looking at legacy West in his first days asking how he could stay on.

Celina Juarez is a badass! 💪🏼

I don’t trust Seth Ridley. He’s telling Lucy his SECOND sob story. First, the OD’ed high school girlfriend, then the cancer thing. He knows Lucy is an empathetic person. It feels emotionally manipulative at this point.

Knowing the situation, James shouldn’t have invited those people to their house. This conflict in their marriage feels forced. James that we know will respect Nyla’s boundaries.

Lucy having a drink with her 2 exes at the end of the shift is kinda awkward… 😬

After Tim warns his Boot about being followed home on his "cardio training" walk we moved to the husband giving up Detective Harper's house.

Of course it is a TV thing that the stars live on their beat when in real life very few live anywhere in the city limits

I was just about to post about this. He's made three major mistakes that could've/should've gotten him washed out and for every one, he's had a "not excuse" that perfectly plays on Lucy's heartstrings, either he's super sus or it's bad writing desperately trying to him sympathetic as fast as possible.

Gonna spoiler tag this just in case

Spoiler

The synopsis for episode four references Lucy growing suspicious of Seth.

I had these same thoughts. He could be conning Lucy while he has something devious going on. He presents himself as "much too clean-cut."

I kinda love the idea of wimpy rookie turning out to be some kind of major scammer. It’s a much more original arc than timid guy learning self confidence. I guess we’ll see.

I’m glad they didn’t drag out homeless rookie’s deception very long. Tim caught him on day 2. I’ve forgotten the story behind Smitty’s situation but it looks like a fun place to live.

I guess at some point I will have to learn the new rookies’ names.

Smitty just likes to sit around cops while in uniform. Except when called out to assist the FBI then he does actual police work.

With Sergeant Bradford going back to field training we know their names, it's Boot.

For half a second I was like, "Oh hey, young adult cancer representation!"

then "oh god, it's just "Cancer" - the nebulous evil Cancer, not putting a name to it, just letting people conjure their mental image of it. If the cancer was aggressive, he probably got chemo - he sure has no chemo brain or long term side effects, unlike most people. This should be a pile of fun."

Ooo. I totally missed that.
Was the first sob story in the previous episode?
So:
1) Dead girlfriend, and 2) Cancer.
Not comedic, but likely the writers are going with the comedy rule of 3 anyway.
What will be 7.3’s sob story?
Old Yeller got rabies?

What is this rookie’s real deal?

Maybe he’s homeless too??
If so, that is really awkward given the loss of homes in LA from the fires right now.

Remember when shows used to pull episodes because of real life mass murders?

Since this department is under fire from the community it wouldn’t look good to fire someone because they didn’t have a home. I also thought new rookie with the sad stories is hiding something or just trying to scam Chen.

Texas is now another don't I know you guy, at least among football fans not TMZ. Joining Sonny Crockett of Miami Vice, Ranger Trivette of Walker and Johnny Utah of Point Break.

But probationary,  make that any cop does not get public notice when they are gone, even after community policing day because they go back to just a uniform in their shop driving by
