So, a Japanese Cheesecake? I searched it :

"a light and airy cheesecake that's also known as soufflé cheesecake, cotton cheesecake, or jiggly cake.  Texture: Japanese cheesecake has a wobbly, airy texture when fresh from the oven, and a chiffon-like texture when chilled.  Sweeter than conventional cheesecakes."

It sounds good.

I don't know if the confection sugar on the top is supposed to be John's face, but it looks adorable.

Becky and Daniel- Blue shirts. They had to flip their cheesecake to hide the crack in the top.   Yolanda says not sweet enough.

Starlett and Kai-yellow shirts.  Pumpkin spice with lemon in it.  It looks delicious, and Yolanda likes the sweetness.

Danielle and Courtney-orange shirts. Lemon cinnamon Japanese Cheesecake.   No pumpkin.  Flavor is nice, Curtis likes it.

Kaitlyn and Ronan-pink shirts.   Pumpkin Spice Japanese Cheesecake, lots of cracks.  Curtis likes it, Yolanda says lemon overpowers the pumpkin spice.

Winners of the safety bake, and into the merged contest next week are: Kai and Starlett (yellow shirts) with Pumpkin Spice Japanese Cheesecake, with John's face dusted on it.

I love that most of them were very close.

Elimination challenge:   Curtis Stone's pick.

Becky and Daniel-blue shirts. She thinks it's a sugar cookie, he says crackling conchas (Central American sweet bread with crackling on top) half strawberry, and half cinnamon.  Their conchas look fantastic, great crackling.

Danielle and Courtney-orange shirts. Tart with chocolate pastry creme and fruit on top. No yeast.  I'm very worried for them. I'm afraid the other teams are right about the conchas.   I think they fell for a fake out with the cocoa powder.   Their tarts look amazing.

Kaitlyn and Ronan-pink shirts. Spanish bread treat, conchas is what she's talking about, half cinnamon and half strawberry crackling on top. The tops didn't crack properly. Their conchas look nice, but not enough crackling on top. Curtis says not enough sweet.

Dessert: Conchas, chocolate, strawberry and cinnamon.

Bye to Danielle and Courtney, I'll miss them.

It's "craquelin", which I only know from GBBO.   Although a crackling topping would be awesome, and I would totally eat it.

It's Joel.

Thanks, I've seen the conchas before, but didn't know anything about them.   And craquelin?   Maybe I should watch the GBBO with captions).

I liked Danielle and Courtney, but it was obvious they were outclassed by the others.  They were the only ones that failed badly in the safety round, I don't know how they could see pumpkin and claim it was just cinnamon.   Then they were the only ones to fail badly in the elimination round.

The elimination was anticlimactic, I knew when the show took lengths to avoid showing us what they baked until it was on the judging table that they had stuck with their tarts.

I did not realise that the brother/sister team is Mexican (or perhaps half-Mexican).  Good for them for recognising the conchas instantly.

I think Courtney is someone who didn't deal well with the pressure.   She arrived at Conchas too late but she did get there.

But I'm always surprised when people overthink their flavor combinations.  Is lemon cinnamon a common flavor combination for anything?

Never heard of Ravi before (don't watch their show).  Felt like he was just hanging around backstage to wait for Joel so they could go to Hooters or somewhere for dinner, and Joel said, "Hey, you can make some money.  I'll get them to let you be our guest judge!"

I like Joel, but I wish he would stop yelling his lines.

I like Joel a lot but for some reason haven’t gotten around to watching his show.  So I have no idea who this Ravi is.  I know Joel is really tall, but Ravi looks like he is about 5’ 2” next to him.  I didn’t find Ravi funny at all.

As far as Joel yelling his lines, I think that’s part of the schtick.  I think he is hilarious.

Animal Control is decent, with some episodes being stand outs.  Worth checking out.  The cast are all quite talented comedians, and Ravi holds his own, imho.  I guess he was being a polite guest.  LOL

Joel and Curtis are nearly a foot taller than Ravi, but I wondered if Yolanda was wearing stilts.  She was towering over Ravi, who is nearly 2 inches taller than her.

I don't know if I'd want sweeter cheesecake, but the lighter texture sounds wonderful.  Too often I find cheesecake to be too dense and thick to be truly enjoyable.

Their craquelin was too thick to crack properly but good on them for thinking of the correct thing even if they didn't know the right name.

I only know about craquelin from the Great British Baking Show.  I know about conchas because the WAWA near me sells them.  Prepackaged, not freshly baked, and I've never had one but now I kinda want some.

I liked them.  They got along really well.  But they were terrible at interpreting the clues.  Although at least they realized that the cocoa powder was used in the mystery dessert.

I think Yolanda stands on the first step that leads up to the triangle table in some shots so that could be why she appeared taller than Ravi maybe?
