I don't have Netflix . . . but given that this series premieres in a week, I figured someone had to start a thread.

Here's the main trailer:

Looks like the plan is to speed run through the East Blue stories. The big question is whether the series will have the clout that Death Note and Cowboy Bebop couldn't generate. American adaptions of anime are dreaded . . . .but given how mangaka (series creator) Eiichiro Oda was involved, maybe it won't be a mess. Bonus: the cast from the original anime will be dubbing the Japanese version . . . .for hardcore otaku, it would be like watching One Piece again for the first time.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King. Too bad all the other Pirates came up with the same idea. Enter a world where the Marines uphold the laws of the sea and the Pirates are running rampant. The characters are divided into normal people and Devil Fruit users. A person who eats a Devil Fruit gains a semi-random power that makes them enormously powerful, but the user is no longer able to swim if they fall into the ocean, they have to be saved. Luckily Devil Fruits are extremely rare.

Once they saw how bad the dye turned out they should have slapped wigs on them.

I do not agree. Then the hairstyles would seem unnatural. 🤐So it's good that the actors' hair was just dyed. But they added liveliness and color to the action.

And yes, I have not read the manga, but I really liked the show. Now I want to read the original in order to reveal the history of each character in more depth. And if this is so, then the creators of the show have achieved their goal.🤩

I smiled through the last 10 minutes. I'm still giggling now.

Agree. The season finale was just perfect. He had such a positive spirit! Each character reappeared on screen and was shown how they all react to Luffy's poster. Most, however, smile, and you can not help smiling.☺️

I watched this, despite never watching the Anime or reading the manga.  Overall I enjoyed it.  However, I found Luffy (young and adult) to be very annoying.  Is he like that in the anime?

You should watch the first season of the Anime, the villain is a weird version of Michael Jackson.

As a fan of the anime/manga I have been really curious about how this would turn out, especially considering the not so great track record of anime adaptations and what a wild series this is, but I was pleasantly surprised by how it turned out. You can really tell how much love and care went into this series, how much getting the vibe right was important to everyone involved, and that the manga's writers was here to make sure that the show manages to keep the original stories spirit. There are some things that I was sad to see left out and some changes I didn't love to the source material, but I really was surprised at how much they translated faithfully from the manga/anime, and even when things were left out they usually added some shout outs to things that were left behind and there were quite a few references to events, locations, and characters who will be important later. Even a lot of the things they left out or changed, I do get why they did it, you can only get so much into a Netflix show.

There is a lot to like about this show, the cast is all excellent, both the main characters and the supporting cast, the costume design and sets are all amazing, I am so glad that they used so many practical effects and sets, but I most love how much they committ to how weird this world is. They really lean into the quirky characters deigns, like the many different odd shades of hair, the cartoony sets, wacky bits of world building like the birds that deliver the newspapers and the snail phones, the abrupt tonal shifts (which are just going to get more intense as shit gets even more real) and very anime fight scenes, the wanted posters popping up over peoples faces, I really respect that the show runners really went hard on what gives One Piece its unique identity.

If you like the show, I really would highly recommend giving the manga and/or anime a look. For me the art style really turned me off at first but I came around to it eventually and at this point in the anime especially the art style is totally different, and while its certainly a time commitment, I would say its worth it. I am crossing my fingers that Netflix gives this a second season because the story only gets better from here.

I've never watched anime, but I follow people who talked about this one, a lot. The anime, not the netflix show. I follow a young woman who just got married, she's on her honeymoon in Japan, and her husband made some new friends at a bar, or place to eat, who apparently worked on this show. I don't know if they were crew, or in front of the camera. The instagram stories are gone now, otherwise I'd link to them.

I'll check this out, I just have other things to finish first.

I'd alway been aware of One Piece even though none of my kids have really been into it, I remember one Halloween someone at our school dressed as Luffy and I immediately recognized the costume. My daughter started watching this and then raved about it to me, so now I am watching it with my two other children.

I love the whole world built around this story,  it has turned out to be must watch tv for our family, everyone enjoys it. All of the main and supporting characters are great, but my absolute favorite is Luffy, he is the perfect blend of innocence and positivity, find him to be utterly charming and sweet. He is just adorable.

We ended up watching the first episode of the Anime to compare the two shows. I appreciate how faithful the live action is to the original and I am grateful that they reined Luffy in a bit, his anime version tends to do a lot of screaming (a trait I find common and exhausting in a lot of Anime). I was immediately turned off from the Anime when I found out how many episodes there are: 1000+. I'm not sure how that is even possible but its about 900 too many for me.

I'm looking forward to more seasons of the live action but hope that it reaches a resolution much quicker than the original version.

Finished - it was OK.  Luffy and Zoro should be dead if not for convenient plot armor.  Oh, and . . .

Spoiler

The anime has over 1,100 episodes and he still hasn't found the fucking One Piece.  This season made it to about episode 45. Sorry, I'm out.
