Further tidbits from the TCAs (via reporters tweeting stuff out), either from PBS president Paula Kerger's executive session going on right now or press releases

Ken Burns will be doing a 6 part doc series on the American Revolution that will premiere in Fall 2025

PBS will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Austin City Limits this year

Kerger is asked about balancing PBS Passport, PBS' in-house streaming subscription vs the Amazon add-on and other streaming services, she said they've established a system for shows getting royalties from Amazon. On the streaming options vs local stations, Kerger said they aren't in conflict and support each other. On making deals with streamers, it's important that for instance Youtube TV and Hulu subscribers pick up local stations' live feed, directly giving local stations more audiences

Regarding investigative series Frontline's success and longevity, Kerger said there's not one really left in the space except for maybe 60 minutes

Regarding celebrity hosts and what they bring to the show, Kerger said they think carefully about who they bring in and the host is usually passionate about the subject

Asked about what PBS is doing to diversify the documentary space, Kerger said 54% of creators on current programming come from underrepresented communities

Some Masterpiece bits:

- "Moonflower Murders", sequel series to Magpie Murders, is premiering this Fall

- "Alice & Jack" is a 6 episode series that will premiere Sunday March 17 at 10pm ET. Love story over the course of 15 years that stars Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleason

- "World on Fire" will  not be coming back for another season. One reason is that the BBC decided not to renew it

I overlooked a new program episode for February: "Nova:  Building the Eiffel Tower", Feb 14

There looks like there's going to be some real interesting programming coming in the next couple of months plus I look forward to whatever they announce at the TV Critics press tour this Tuesday Monday

I thought the Eiffel tower episode was very good & well worth a watch.

If there is a topic for Great Performances, I couldn't find it. But I thought that this might be of interest to some:

'How PBS Captures Broadway Shows for Great Performances'

excerpts:

Quote

There is arguably no bigger expert on the art of filming a live performance than Horn, who has been a producer and director on Great Performances for over 40 years—making sure that audiences around the country have access to Broadway shows, operas, dance, and concerts for free. Horn has won four Emmys, and he’s worked with a who’s who of theatrical legends. Ask about any of them, and he’ll have an anecdote.

Quote

The first step is show selection. Horn admits it’s not as easy as going to a particular show and asking if PBS can film them. First, PBS has to make sure there’s enough in its budget to cover the costs, since the network also films concerts, dance, and operas. Filmed performances are one of the most expensive things that the network produces. Horn estimates that it costs around $1.5-$2 million to film a Broadway musical and $1-$1.5 million for a play (in London, the cost is “a little more than half” of that due to cheaper labor costs).

No, no topic for Great Performances as far as I know, other than here. One can always be created if you think there's enough interest and if you don't know how, just say so and either a mod or one of us can create it. I'm not sure at the moment what subforum it would go under as it is both a documentary and a performance series, but we can easily ask the mods to figure that out

FYI, a subcategory PBS Documentaries has been created under the parent category Nonfiction and Documentaries. This will allow we users to add subforums under that for various PBS docs and doc series. Existing PBS docs and doc series subforums will be moved under there as the mods have time. If you want to create a doc subforum but don’t know how you can ask a mod for help or say something here and one of us with experience can do it for you. I asked how to handle “Great Performances” since that’s a weird hybrid and a mod is looking into it

To follow up, the mods have created a subcategory for Great Performances under Nonfiction and Documentaries -> PBS. For you and anyone else interested, you are free to decide what topics to create, whether just a general discussion thread, individual topics or perhaps season threads

Regarding the TCA Summer Press Tour, PBS put on their pressroom website that they will be presenting Monday (7/15) and Tuesday (7/16). Given the shortness of this press tour, I figured PBS would be just one day, so 2 is exciting and the journalists present always love PBS and its presentations

The link below shows you PBS' schedule over the 2 days and you can click on the links to get more information. Looks like some interesting stuff coming up
