Kevin Feige opens up about Phase 5, Kang, and the future of the MCU

Thunderbolts is also in the works for 2024, with a bunch of familiar faces.
That's another one. We've got a lot of things that start shooting relatively soon. What's fun about that, and I sort of said this at D23, is that they are barely heroes. None of them would consider themselves heroes. When your de facto leader is Bucky Barnes, that's sort of all you need to know. That's the trickle down. But again, it goes to the amazing work that [casting director] Sarah Finn has done across the whole MCU. You've got David Harbour and Florence Pugh and these people who are at the top of their game and popping in everything they're doing. They're already here and established in the MCU, and we get to build the movie around them.

EXCLUSIVE: Following his Oscar-nominated role in Minari and scene-stealing part in Nope, Steven Yeun is continuing to show his range as he is now looking to add a Marvel movie to his resume. Sources tell Deadline, Yeun is set to join Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, in a part that is not only significant to this film but could also play a role going forward in future films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He joins an ensemble that was announced during Disney’s D23 event last year that includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. Ayo Edebiri also joined the ensemble in an undisclosed role.

The film will bow on July 26, 2024. Marvel had no comment.

Steven Yeun On Joining Marvel’s Thunderbolts: ’The Intentions Of The Character Were Very Clear’ – Exclusive
By Ben Travis    March 14, 2023
https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/steven-yeun-marvel-thunderbolts-exclusive/

Quote

For the actor – whose Thunderbolts role is currently under wraps – it was an opportunity to re-team with director Jake Schreier, whose upcoming Netflix series Beef stars Yeun in a leading role opposite Ali Wong. “I don’t know if it was explicitly on my bucket list,” Yeun tells Empire of joining the MCU. “It was more the story, getting to work with Jake Schreier again, who directed Beef, and what his intentions were. The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that’s what drew me to the film.” But who will that be? A villainous role? Someone in the orbit of Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross? A fresh recruit of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val? Stay tuned…

New Captain America Movie, Thunderbolts Team-Up and Avengers: Kang Dynasty All Pushed Back

Announced back in September, the team-up movie finds Falcon‘s Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell and Hawkeye‘s Florence Pugh continuing their character arcs as Bucky Barnes, John Walker and Yelena Belova. 'Thunderbolts' Director Says MCU Film Shares Something Surprising With Netflix's 'Beef'
BY PERRI NEMIROFF     PUBLISHED 4 DAYS AGO
https://collider.com/thunderbolts-director-jake-schreier-beef-comments/

Quote

When asked if we’ll see any qualities of his past projects on the big screen in Thunderbolts, he pinpointed a story connection between the upcoming MCU film and Beef. Here’s how he put it:

“Obviously I can say so little, but I think it's about characters and is there something specific to those characters that bring them together and something that they're going through that isn't the most traditional superhero story to be told? And I think if you can hit that and if you can make it specific – I think if you look at something like Beef what makes it what it is is that it's so specific on so many levels. Sonny (Lee Sung Jin) brought so much of himself to it, Ali and Steven, everyone, and in being that specific, it becomes something universal. And I think that's sort of similar to the way that we're looking at Thunderbolts is that there is a real clear take and perspective on these characters, and there's a specificity to it that. In the end, obviously, we want to make a big universal movie that everyone can connect to, but that you can only do that by making something that feels personal, and I think that's what's exciting about the project to us.”

Though nothing has been officially announced, it looks like we now have confirmation that Yeun will indeed portray Robert Reynolds, aka the Sentry.

While speaking with comic artist David Finch, The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Kirkman came right out and said: "My good friend Steven Yeun is playing the Sentry in a movie:"

“Yeah, he called me, he went in for a costume fitting. I hope I’m not… I don’t think this is a spoiler or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe. We’ll see. I don’t care. I don’t work for Marvel. What are they going to do to me? He called me and he said, 'I just came back from a costume fitting for the Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that are yellow and blue.' He said he was at the costume fitting and was like, 'Aww, crap. I forgot Invincible was yellow and blue.'"

Steven Yeun is falling out of Marvel Studios‘ Thunderbolts pic due to scheduling issues after production was pushed on the film because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Deadline has confirmed.

Steven Yeun will not be suiting up for Thunderbolts, the antihero-centric feature in the works from Marvel Studios, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Yeun’s involvement in Thunderbolts was first reported back in February, though Marvel never officially announced the casting. Five months earlier, during a D23 presentation, the studio revealed Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour and Wyatt Russell were among the Marvel mainstays who would be in the film.

Like many tentpoles, Thunderbolts was struck by last year’s dual writers and actors strikes, which put schedules in disarray across Hollywood. Thunderbolts was initially slated for July 2024, but was pushed back a year to July 2025 and has yet to begin filming.

Florence Pugh
The Chameleon
...
The powerhouse performer of the bunch, Pugh’s breakout came in the indie Lady Macbeth in 2016. She followed this with an Oscar nomination for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and the A24 horror hit Midsommar, proving both her critical and commercial appeal. While Don’t Worry Darling, the first major studio film that Pugh led, had a rough landing, she’s held her own in ensembles like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. And while studios are not yet ready to hang a franchise on Pugh’s shoulders alone, she is a regular at film markets, throwing her weight into packages like the upcoming romancer We Live in Time, in which she co-stars with Andrew Garfield. The English actress also is one of the few New A-Listers making a full-court press with Marvel. (Yes, Zendaya’s in Spider-Man, but she signed on nearly a decade ago. And it’s safe to assume Sydney Sweeney won’t be doing another Madame Web.) Pugh, 28, earned an eight-figure payday for two Marvel films, first the Scarlett Johansson-led Black Widow then Thunderbolts, where she will be at the top of the call sheet. She also popped up in the TV series Hawkeye, showing her dedication (or, at the very least, contractual obligation).

Descriptions of trailer footage that was shown at SDCC...

First Trailer for Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts Movie Released at Comic-Con
By Aeron Mer Eclarinal   July 28, 2024

Quote
Spoiler

The footage began with Alexi Shostakov (aka Red Guardian) and Yelena Belova's reunion, with Yelena telling Alexi, "There's something wrong with me:"

Yelena: "You feel fulfilled."

Alexi: "So full. So filled, but what brings you here?"

Yelena: "There's something wrong with me."

A montage then showed Bucky entering a courtroom, U.S. Agent looking at news articles about himself, and Yelena's hallway fight.

The exclusive look also showed the team coming together, with each member given a mission by a mysterious benefactor. It is later revealed to be a setup.

Yelena and Ghost fight U.S. Agent and an unknown assailant. The footage shows Lewis Pullman as Bob enters wearing a hospital gown before the room locks down.

Yelena tells someone, "Someone wants us gone. Eventually, you come to realize that there are bad guys.. and there are worse guys."

In a separate scene, Sebastian Stan's Bucky is not happy to see Valentina. He then puts on his Vibranium arm.

Brandon Davis of Comicbook also teased that there is a scene in the Avengers Tower with Valentina.

Marvel's Thunderbolts: New Footage Shown at SDCC, Mystery Title Addressed

Via ComicBook's Phase Zero Host Brandon Davis from inside Hall H:

Spoiler

"Yelena knocks on Alexei's door. He is slobbing it up on the couch and tries to spruce up the place and himself before opening the door but it's still very, very messy. He claims to be taking steps with a lot of work and being fulfilled, clearly lying. He asks what brings her here. "There is something is wrong with me," she said.

Bucky enters a courtroom. US Agent looks at news articles about himsel. Yelena has a hallway fight reminiscent of Black Widow's in Iron Man 2. She investigates a room, finds charts, and gets shot at by US Agent. Ghost comes to her aid while another enemy helps US Agent. "Bob" enters the room wearing a hospotial gown. The room locks down its doors.

Yelena explains she is a contract killer and has surmised that someone wants all of them dead. The room turns into a furnace. At a part with Loki's scepter in a glass case, Bucky is not happy to see Valetina. He puts on his Vibranium arm.

Music makes the whole movie feel a bit delirious. Dark color tones make the movie feel gritty. There is a scene in what might be Avengers Tower."

How Top Gun: Maverick Inspired Lewis Pullman to Join the MCU
by Lyvie Scott   Aug. 14, 2024
https://www.inverse.com/lewis-pullman-interview-thunderbolts-mcu-top-gun

Quote

Pullman was offered his mystery role in Thunderbolts* after Steven Yeun departed the project, citing scheduling issues brought on by production delays. At the time, he and [his Top Gun co-star, Danny] Ramirez were also housemates in New York, which made it easier to get his opinion on the MCU.

“I remember I knocked on his door,” Pullman recalls. “I was like, ‘Dude...’ And he was immediately in his excitable demeanor: He was like, ‘Dude, you gotta do it! Then we’re gonna be in a movie together! We’re gonna be fighting each other or maybe fighting other people together.’”
*  *  *
Ramirez first joined the MCU in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in 2021. The miniseries positioned his Joaquin Torres as the next Falcon, with him inheriting the wings from Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) himself. His next appearance, in Captain America: Brave New World, will see him taking on the mantle to work side-by-side with the newly-minted Captain America — but Ramirez is clearly hoping for a team-up (or even a face-off) between his character and Pullman’s. “Anything’s possible in the MCU,” Pullman recalls his co-star saying.

I know that K.E.V.I.N. decision to make the Defenders saga canon came too late for this production but I would like at least a mention of Hellcat, Jessica Jones' Trish Walker as a possible Thunderbolts II team member.

I'll be in the theatre as close to opening weekend as practical.

The comics came after my time, after hearing how Deadpool didn't have the rights to the character so Peter stood in I wonder if that Bob is the MCU's Hydra Bob?

I like that they didn't nerf the Winter Soldier like they did in the Falcon Show.

So how much would I have to pay Disney to make Valentina Allegra de Don’tcare Wossname just go away? I can’t abide this character.

(It isn’t nice to make me find Julia Louis-Dreyfus annoying, Marvel. Stop it.)

I watched the trailer again, and realises it's a sequel to a movie I didn't like, I movie I didn't watch at all, and a miniseries I didn't finish. That's the problem with making it too interconnected. If people start skipping entries, it's easier to skip ones depending on the missing ones.

I didn't watch Black Widow but, I did watch Ant-Man 2, Hawkeye and F&tWS so, i know some of the characters. Plus, I love David Harbour on Stranger Things 😍

I'm assuming you won't need to watch every movie/show to understand the movie

I completely forgot about Hawkeye. Ant-Man 2 was the one I didn't see. But that makes this movie dependent on four other things? No. I saw the Marvels, because the trailers were so fun. And the movie was almost as fun too! This trailer leaves me cold.

James Gunn made it work with his team. Too much back story on the costumed government killers may be the problem. The teaser makes it look like they all are sorry at what their lives had become. And if you look at their screen history none of them can be fun like Rocket or suddenly have a previous mission like Drax and Gamora.

I watched Black Widow, and I enjoyed it; I loved the Hawkeye series (and Yelena). There were things I enjoyed about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but USAgent/Capt. ‘MurricaFkYeah and the aforementioned Allegra were a huge misfire. I doubt I’ll watch this one. It looks like a drag.

On the contrary I think most of them were blank enough slates previously they can make them more interesting. For instance they were able to make Zemo a more fun character in Falcon & Winter Soldier.

Deadpool & Wolverine relies on the audience having seen a bunch of movies that came out twenty years ago or in the case of one particular named character, a movie that never came out at all! Despite references stacked on top of in-jokes stacked on top of references stacked on top of intricate and sometimes contradictory continuity, I think that movie still did pretty well. If it was anyone's entry point to the MCU they likely had no idea what was going on but the story managed to work all the same.

I'm pretty sure as with most things in the later MCU continuity, there will be some snippets to catch us up on who these characters are. We can already see from the trailer that they're going to have an early showcase fight so that everyone gets to show off their special skills. I think it will be easy enough to follow along. I have only seen most of the related properties here once and I'm not feeling like I need to watch all those things again before seeing this.
