8. Quantum Leap - Could Go Either Way
...
The freshman drama is averaging 2.6 million viewers and a 0.37 rating in the demo, losing a big chunk from a strong lead-in The Voice.

However, it does command strong viewing in delayed numbers, leading the freshman crop in the demo.

NBC gave it a vote of confidence with a backorder, but it would need to increase a bit to move to likely renewal status.

NBC | The Voice (5.6 mil/0.6, read recap) was steady week-to-week in the demo yet lost some eyeballs, while Quantum Leap (2.57 mil/0.4, TVLine reader grade "A-"; read recap) hit multi-week highs with its fall finale. (Season 1 resumes Jan. 2, 2023.)

Scorecard: Quantum Leap and La Brea Have Slipped in the Rankings, The Winchesters Tops The CW’s Genre Entries, and More

Next up is NBC’s Quantum Leap which is at Number 50, averaging a 0.37 rating with 2.6 million total viewers. Those numbers are actually not bad for the 10 PM EST hour, and it is possible that the show could continue into a second season. But if NBC decides to stop programming the 10 PM EST hour (a very real possibility for the 2023-24 season), this show could be one of the casualties. It is the second lowest-rated drama on NBC, and network execs would have a hard time justifying keeping it around on a reduced schedule. Fans should definitely make some noise in support of this show and it could possibly leap over to Peacock if the network cuts its hours.

Why would NBC stop programming at 10pm? Are they going to move their national news program earlier? CBC did that quite a number of years ago now.

This article was from November and before Quantum Leap was renewed.

There were some rumors last fall that NBC was considering getting rid of the 10 p.m. Eastern hour of programming.  I'm guessing they'd do it because so few people watch TV at that time and I imagine they hope they could move those shows to Peacock.  But if they decide to do it, it's unlikely to be for next season.

Well, the one on the 16th made total sense — no point competing against an NFL playoff game.

I don’t understand the one on the 23rd though. Is there some big awards show or something on another network?

I don't think so. The Good Doctor has a new episode on the 23rd, and that is Quantum Leap's usual competition.

No mention of Janice.  Is she just going to go away now?   Putting the characters in the imaging chamber more makes sense, unless they invent some new HQ drama to replace the Janice and Martinez plots.

Quantum Leap Taps Manifest’s Melissa Roxburgh to Guest-Star in Season 2
BY KEISHA HATCHETT  JULY 22, 2023
https://tvline.com/casting-news/quantum-leap-season-2-melissa-roxburgh-cast-premiere-spoilers-1235017714/

Melissa Roxburgh will make the leap from Manifest to Quantum Leap.

During Quantum Leap’s panel Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, NBC announced that Roxburgh will guest-star in the sci-fi drama’s Season 2 premiere, set for Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 9/8c.

Francois Arnaud (Midnight Texas), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal, Blindspot), and P.J. Byrne (The Boys, Shazam! Fury of the Gods) are also slated to appear in the episode.

Additionally, the network showed the first eight minutes of the season opener, which will not be posted online.

Spoiler

The lengthy sneak peek confirmed that — spoilers ahead! — Ben (played by Raymond Lee) didn’t make it home, as was hinted in the Season 1 finale. Instead, he winds up in the body of a man named Perez on a plane in 1978, flying somewhere over Russia. Scared, frustrated and cut off from the Quantum Leap headquarters, Ben has no choice but to proceed with the leap on his own.

Perez’s cohorts — played by Roxburgh, Arnaud, Abrams, and Byrne — are down-and-out members of the air force, tasked with a secret mission to transport a mystery crate to New Delhi. However, the plane is shot down by missiles before they can reach their location. Whatever is being delivered in that giant crate is extremely important, because Roxburgh’s character risks her life (and Ben’s) to get it off the plane before the plane explodes.

Interview with one of the producers, (spoilers if you haven't seen the premiere yet): 'Quantum Leap's Exec Producer Teases Season 2's Time-Travel Adventures'

Quote

Cheryl Eddy, io9: In season one we had Ben as the leaper going on his time-travel adventures, but also a parallel storyline with the team back at headquarters. With that big mystery resolved in season one, will we be seeing less of the home team moving forward?

Chris Grismer: I think you see as much of those characters but in a different way this season. As you saw last season, some of them were involved in the leaps, especially in the last episode, and I think there’ll be more of that this season. This season offers us a chance to spend a little more time in the leaps, getting through the emotion of the leaps and being with Ben. But the other characters do come along for that ride.
