In SUPERMAN & LOIS, after years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world's most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, "Teen Wolf") and comic books' most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, "Grimm"), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever - dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today's society. Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, "Little Fires Everywhere") and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, "The Peanuts Movie") could inherit their father's Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older.

Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, "Entourage"), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark's first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, "Graceland"). The adults aren't the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle's rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, "Wander Darkly").

Of course, there's never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois' father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, "Nip/Tuck") looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment's notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois' return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, "All American") enters their lives.

Based on the characters from DC created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, SUPERMAN & LOIS is written and executive produced by Todd Helbing ("The Flash") and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns. The series is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Superman & Lois Might Begin Filming In Late September
Craig Byrne   July 5, 2020
http://www.kryptonsite.com/superman-lois-might-begin-filming-in-late-september/

Quote

So, obviously things are subject to change, and it is to be assumed that if filming can safely start either sooner or later, it will, but right now, Vancouver production charts list Superman & Lois as filming from September 30 – October 15, 2020. Just one more day from that and we would’ve hit the anniversary of the Smallville premiere! Lee Toland Krieger (Riverdale) is still listed as directing the pilot.

So, again. This could change depending on when production can begin again — but the news is encouraging that it made it onto a production calendar.

Oh I was just coming to post that it was late August.

The planned start dates, which are tentative amid a COVID-19 spike in the U.S., vary for the various shows; I hear they range between Aug. 20-27. I hear the dates reflect when actors would need to arrive in Vancouver for a two-week self-isolation required by British Columbia, the province that Vancouver is part of. Filming would start after the end of the quarantine period.

5 BIG TAKEAWAYS FROM DC FANDOME: EXPLORE THE MULTIVERSE

1. SUPERMAN & LOIS WILL BE A FAMILY DRAMA WITH SUPERHEROICS
...
Fulfilling the idea Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman teased just before it was cancelled, The CW’s upcoming Superman & Lois will be something no other Superman TV could be: a family drama.

“Clark and Lois are married. They’re not only married, they have two teenage boys,” executive producer and showrunner Todd Helbing explained. The mission is, in part, “to tell a story that is as grounded as it can be and still have Superman.” The show will explore what it means to have children when the parents have demanding jobs like an investigative journalist and the world’s most famous superhero.

The show will also explore the sort of children people like Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) would produce. Thanks to last year’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the couple now have a teenage son Jonathan (who appeared as an infant at the start of “Crisis”) and his fraternal twin brother. According to Helbing, the writers used the universe-altering effects of the Crisis to age the kids up (and bring Jon’s brother into existence) because teenagers create more conflict on family shows. Additionally, “we wanted to present two kids with wildly different skill sets.”

Their skills, and the Kent family bond, will be tested in a somewhat familiar backdrop: Smallville. For reasons that will become clear, the family moves back to Clark’s hometown —not that it’s the idyllic place Clark remembers. “I came from a small town in the Midwest.” Helbing said. “We had a business leave and the town started to dry up.” Despite Smallville’s upcoming economic trouble, Helbing said Clark and Lois will still find it “easier to raise children [there] than it is in Metropolis.”

“The storyline with the sons is really compelling,” Tulloch said, also noting that though Lois’s dedication to her work remains, the reporter wonders how much it alienates her children.

Hoechlin suggested Clark will also face a similar internal conflict: “When is it OK to turn off the world?” he asked in regards to Superman making family time. The actor’s father was a doctor and he recalled all the times he was called away to attend to his practice. “It’s a perspective shift for me to look back on how he accomplished that … and wore both hats.”
*  *  *
Also complicating matters is the presence of Clark’s high school sweetheart Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui). Though Helbing emphatically stated Clark will never have an affair, he said there is dynamic to explore in how “as an adult, you deal with that relationship.” He also suggested the show will avoid the sort of Lois and Lana rivalry the characters endured in the Silver Age of comics — when both characters hatched ridiculous schemes for the Man of Tomorrow’s affections. “We also don’t want Lois and Lana brawling,” he said. Nonetheless, there will be some conflict between them.

Adding to these conflicts will be Lana’s daughter, Sarah Cushing (Inde Navarrette), a new character created for the show — like her father Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez) — whose story will cross with the Kent boys.

Despite sounding more like One Tree Hill than The Adventures of Superman, Helbing said the show will still have action. “There are set pieces. There are heroics,” he explained. Lois will also be seen as “effective” in her own milieu — suggesting the show will also have a thriller edge as she specializes in revealing corruption. The pair will no doubt use their skills to solve crimes as Helbing added,”[Superman and Lois] are an unstoppable force [together].”

The producer also admitted that Superman will get a new “badass” suit, as the one Hoechlin wore in his Supergirl and Arrowverse crossover appearances was not up to the wear-and-tear of a weekly series.

DC FanDome Report – “Superman and Lois” Panel
September 16, 2020
https://www.supermanhomepage.com/dc-fandome-report-superman-lois-panel/

Quote

Superman Homepage reporter Michael Moreno watched the panel for the “Superman and Lois” TV series, which was made available on demand on Saturday, September 12 in the WatchVerse section of DC FanDome, and filed this report:

Jim Lee, who is Creative Officer at DC Comics hosted the 2020 “Superman and Lois” Panel at DC FanDome on Saturday, September 12. Panelists included Todd Helbing (writer and executive producer for the “Superman and Lois” series), Tyler Hoechlin (Superman/Clark Kent), and Elizabeth Tulloch (Lois Lane).
*  *  *
Jim: You look too young to have teenage kids.

Todd: Yeah, well, we lead into that because Clark Kent doesn’t really age that much.

Tyler: You gotta look close (points to his chin). The greys are coming in. They’re there, don’t worry, They’re there.

Todd: Tyler’s been shaving; he’s been clean shaven for a week now. Yeah, I think as a father who happens to have 2 boys, that felt like a really great way to bring in some personal experience and just to tell really a story that is as grounded as it can possibly be to have Superman in it. And, as a couple, we really get to lean into Clark and Lois’s not being Superman or most famous journalists in the world but as parents. What is that like to have jobs like that (which a lot of people can relate to nowadays)?… A lot of families that have 2 working parents, all the complexities, difficulties that come with having jobs like that, and then with 2 boy… So we wanted to present 2 kids that had completely different skill sets, and how do you deal with that as parents?

Jim: And I don’t know if you’re comfortable revealing this just yet, but there’s a reason Clark and Lois moved back to Smallville. That’s a big piece of it.

Todd: Yeah, I’m not gonna give the reason yet, but the story of Superman has taken place in Metropolis for very long. Obviously there was the Smallville series. But I came from a small town in the Midwest, and the town that I grew up in had a business leave. That sort of affected everybody in the town, and the town started to slowly dry up. And it felt very current with recent years after 2008. We wanted to tell a story where you have the parents, after this tragic event happens, move back to Smallville and really find that it is easier to raise kids maybe in a place where life isn’t so hectic as it is in Metropolis.
*  *  *
Jim: So, on top of this challenge between, you know, this personal challenge between Clark and Lois and their family, Todd, can you talk a little about, as they go to Smallville, the other elements of the other members of the supporting cast of Superman that kind of want to activate and bring into the fold? We were talking about, the other day, about how love triangles are really important in the Superman mythology, starting with the first, which is Superman and Lois and Clark, right before Lois figured out his secret identity.

Todd: Yeah, well, I think it’s fun, too, when they go back, that Lana Lang is there. You know? Lana was Clark’s first love, and I think it’s an interesting dynamic. As an adult, how do you deal with that relationship, you know? It can’t be Superman. And we don’t want Clark ever having an affair on Lois. There’s not that situation. That’s never going to happen. He’s as good as they get.

Bitsie: But she should know that. You know what I mean?

Tyler: laughs

Todd: It’s also like we don’t want Lois and Lana brawling, but that dynamic, as an adult, is really interesting to us, you know. Those feelings are impossible to ignore. And I think that that’s a real thing for some people, especially when kids are involved. And then to see her husband and her kids and that dynamic. There were a couple of people, a couple of characters that we invented, Kyle Cushing, her husband, and Sarah Cushing who, it’s sort of wrapped up with the boys, and then they have their own love triangle. And then a character that I think is interesting is General Lane, Lois’s father, and his relationship with the two of them. You know, how he sees Superman – he’s a very military guy – so he sort of looks at Superman like his soldier. And so his relationship with Lois is a little fraught, because of the way that he took his job when he was a parent versus the way that Clark is doing his job. So all that messiness is really fun.
*  *  *
Bitsie: Are we going to see a new suit?

Tyler: Are we going to see a new suit? Ah, Todd? Are we going to see a new suit?

Todd: So, OK I’ll take the heat for this one. You know it’s like, originally, for this one, you came on for the crossovers, and that suit just wasn’t built to sustain a series. And, I think, just in everything that we were talking about earlier, you know, it gave us this fresh slate. Yeah, let’s make a new suit. So, um, there’s gonna be a really bad ••• Superman suit in the show. That I’m pretty excited about.

Superman and Lois: First Production Photos Show Smallville Being Built
BY TOM CALEN  SEPTEMBER 18, 2020
https://www.cbr.com/superman-lois-first-photo-smallville-set/

Quote

Construction is underway for Superman & Lois's version of Smallville. Photos shared by Paul Orazietti, executive director of Cloverdale Business Improvement Association in Surrey, British Columbia, reveal initial construction of Clark Kent's hometown.

In a Sept. 16 tweet, Orazietti posted photos depicting early progress on set construction, as well as two previously released pieces of concept art showing viewers may eventually see when The CW series premieres in January 2021. Orazietti also stated that the city of Surrey is "working on [a] long term deal with WB for a production set."

Surrey is located in British Columbia, Canada and comprises seven neighborhoods. One of those neighborhoods, Cloverdale, is where the Superman & Lois Smallville set is being constructed. Cloverdale has a previous connection to the Man of Steel. The city was home to the main street and downtown sets for The WB/CW's long-running series Smallville. A section of the city's fairgrounds is the current location for the set builds.

Production on the series stalled amid the coronavirus pandemic, with work resuming in August 2020 and filming planned for an October start.

SCOOP: John Stewart Will Be the Justice League's Green Lantern
Written By Mikey Sutton   September 16, 2020
https://www.geekositymag.com/post/scoop-john-stewart-will-be-the-justice-league-s-green-lantern

Quote

Quite honestly, Green Lantern, for all of its flaws, was engaging pop entertainment; if Greg Berlanti's original vision for it wasn't dismembered by WB (a repeating story), it probably would've succeeded. But Berlanti has a Green Lantern of his own for HBO Max. I recently scooped that Green Lantern is being planned to join the Justice League in a theatrical sequel. No, it won't be Reynolds, who isn't in the Snyder Cut, either; those rumors are bogus.
*  *  *
As I mentioned then, Green Lantern hasn't been cast yet. The only GL who has been selected is David Ramsey, whose John Diggle was revealed as John Stewart afters years of fan speculation and wishful thinking. Ramsey will appear as GL in the CW's upcoming Superman & Lois TV series, another Berlanti production. However, sources said that he might not be Stewart for HBO Max, apparently. (The latter remains a question mark if it will be tied in with the Arrowverse as Berlanti heads both.)
*  *  *
According to insiders, the Green Lantern being discussed for the new Justice League is Stewart, with Hal Jordan remaining on HBO Max for now. I had this revealed earlier, but here are additional details.

Is ‘Superman and Lois’ already erasing ‘Supergirl’?
BY JAY SNOW    SEPTEMBER 22, 2020
https://www.hypable.com/superman-and-lois-erase-supergirl/

Quote

Now that the time has finally come, it feels like those behind Superman and Lois are making a multitude of decisions that altogether ignore what Supergirl has contributed to the Arrowverse over the last five years.
*  *  *
If we’re to believe the Superman and Lois pilot script that leaked a few months ago is the real deal, that would mean

Spoiler

the character currently known as “The Stranger” played by Wole Parks is Lex Luthor from another Earth. First, surely there will be an explanation for how this is possible while Jon Cryer’s Lex torments Kara and Lena in National City since two Beth Kanes could not exist simultaneously on Batwoman.

*  *  *
Too many of the creative decisions for Superman and Lois seem to be taking away from the foundation that Supergirl has built over five years. But altogether, it is a symptom of a larger problem, which is those behind the Arrowverse using “Crisis on Infinite Earths” uniting the multiverse as an excuse to change absolutely whatever they’d like with no logic put behind the decision.
*  *  *
Superman and Lois seems to be getting free reign to use whatever they need to tell the best story possible (and it sounds fantastic, don’t get me wrong). But these decisions are an excessive use of the leeway that “Crisis on Infinite Earths” has provided. Aside from Arrow, where the changes didn’t really impact anything, Supergirl has been hit the hardest by this new Earth.

These decisions are already undermining Supergirl, and Superman and Lois hasn’t even aired yet, but so much of what we have watched Kara do on Supergirl now feels incredibly pointless.

‘The Flash’, ‘DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow’, ‘All American’ & Other Berlanti Prods. Series Set Tentative Production Start Dates

I hear The Flash is currently slated to begin filming its seventh season October 1, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is targeting an October 5 Season 6 start, both in Vancouver. All American is looking to begin filming its third season Monday in Los Angeles. Of the remaining Berlanti Prods. series, Superman & Lois, Titans and newcomer Kung-Fu are eying mid-October starts. Breakout Stargirl is on track to begin shooting its second season at the end of October, while Doom Patrol‘s third season is expected to start production in January.

As is the case with any production during COVID, the dates are tentative and subject to change. Some of the series mentioned in this story had earlier target start dates that were subsequently pushed, a common occurrence amid the ongoing pandemic.

Warner Bros TV, the studio behind all Berlanti Prods. series, declined comment on the new dates.

Casting news: https://ew.com/tv/superman-lois-cast-sofia-hasmik/

Quote

EW has exclusively learned that Sofia Hasmik (Mad About You) is joining the Arrowverse drama in the recurring guest-star role of Chrissy Beppo.

A journalist at the Smallville Gazette, Chrissy "has a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time," according to the official character description. "A go-getter with dreams of bigger and better things, a chance encounter with her idol changes her life trajectory. " Could that encounter be with Elizabeth Tulloch's Lois Lane?

More Casting news: 'Stacey Farber to play Leslie Larr'

Quote

Stacey Farber is joining the cast of The CW’s upcoming “Superman & Lois” where she’ll play Leslie Larr in recurring role.

Farber’s Larr is described as “the right hand to one of the most influential people on the planet, she’s gone from a young, idealistic dreamer to a hardened, world-worn dream killer. Athletic, strong… and oftentimes heartless.”

The article also explains a possible comic connection, and speculates about her role.

Wow. A Superman show and yet another L.L. person.

A (far from complete) list--this is just the major ones:

Lois Lane
Lucy Lane
Lex Luthor
Lionel Luther
Lana Lang
Lori Lemaris (reasonably reoccuring in the comics, but I think never used in other media)
Linda Lee (one of Supergirl's secret identities)

Lesla-Lar is SUPER obscure, if it's the legit origin of Leslie Larr.  Two or three appearances in DC comics ever.

No way that's just a coincidence.

I noticed the omission of Lena Luthor and Lillian Luthor from your list of "L..L.'s." Lillian has blamed Superman for repeatedly crushing Lex's plans for world domination, and Lena is Lex's sister, although her connection to Superman has always been through his cousin Supergirl more than through her brother Lex. But she still knows who he is and may well pop up occasionally now that she and Supergirl are finally repairing their own friendship.

I admit I was focusing on characters who originated in the comics. Lionel Luthor came from the comics, for example, even though he was a much more minor character. I just looked it up, and apparently Lena (like Lionel) had some quick minor intro in the early 1960s.

Lillian is one I'm not sure if there's much history.  I think Smallville had one, but I don't know if she goes further back.

Lena actually does date back to the early 60s, but as I noted, she was more heavily featured in connection with Supergirl than she was with Superman, and her backstory was very different from the one of the Lena we know today. For one, she went by the last name of Thorul, which was an anagram of "Luthor" created by her and Lex's parents after they disowned him for turning to a life of crime.  Also, she was a powerful telepath, having accidentally gained this power as a toddler when she touched a space brain that Lex was studying at the time.

Also a new(?) synopsis for the show:

Quote

The CW sets up a super Tuesday in 2021 as the world's first superhero and the world's most intrepid reporter balance saving the world and raising their family in The CW's all-new series SUPERMAN & LOIS, premiering Tuesday, February 23 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT), paired with the return of the Scarlet Speedster in the network's most watched series THE FLASH (8:00-9:00pm ET/PT).

It's interesting that while his show is the latest, they are positioning Superman as the first superhero.
