Wow, that was actually a pretty good twist. Maybe I should have seen it coming, but I was so squicked out by that moment when Armstrong started kissing Rachel and then climbed on top of her, plus annoyed by the heavy-handedness of the religious fanaticism, that I completely fell for the misdirection. It seemed like such the typical religious-conservatives-are-crazy-hypocrites thing that cop dramas and mystery shows do a lot that I was didn't pick up on the hints (if there were any?) or think it was anything more than it appeared to be. Love it when a twist makes the plot more interesting. You got me, show. And the actual murder, with the mace to the head. Damn. Very effective and well-executed (er, so to speak). Vega quitting and Flynn considering leaving is really giving the show a sense of finality in these final episodes. I'm actually finding it pretty sad.

The $100,000 Pyramid - General Discussion

No, there's supposed to be 10 episodes, although the 10th was postponed due to the rerun being inserted and all the episodes pushed back a week, and hasn't been rescheduled yet. The same has happened with Match Game, though Celebrity Family Feud's 10th episode has been rescheduled for September, so hopefully Pyramid's will be as well. http://thefutoncritic.com/showatch/100000-pyramid/listings/ -
Not a bad episode, but a little too straightforward to be much more than that. Everything seemed fairly clear from the beginning, with no real suspense or twists. I guess the fact that the mother knew and wanted to die was intended to be a twist...except, eh. Not that surprising. Poor Vega. That was actually pretty decent of the IA guy to reveal that he was there on the orders of the higher ups, making it clear they (or just the chief/captain/whatever) was out for him. At least this way he can choose his own future instead of having them decide it for him.

I always thought the episode of Friends where Joey played Pyramid was a prime example of the destruction of Joey's character and making him far too stupid to be believed, because no one could be that dumb....and yet, after Sunday's second episode, this suddenly doesn't seem so implausible.- 1.2k replies

The $100,000 Pyramid - General Discussion

I've always found Terry Crews incredibly hot (because....well, hello), but this episode kind of killed it. As someone who knows I'd probably get flustered and not come off too well if I were on the show, I try not to judge too harshly...but the man just seemed dim. Like downright stupid. At one point I just sat there looking at him thinking, "I can't believe I ever found you attractive." And that made me sad. That second episode was just horrendous. And I'm not going to blame the contestant for anything he said. He could have said "your kids" and I wouldn't judge him, because after Natasha couldn't get anything with even the best clues earlier, he was just blurting out anything in desperation. Natasha was so damn incompetent I can imagine him dismissing everything that came to mind as not good enough and not something she would have gotten...because she wouldn't have. Awful. -
Good episode, albeit quite sad. It's been a while since they did one where both the killer and victim were sympathetic (maybe since the suicide one in Season 2?) so that was a nice change of pace. Cool murder, but yeah, sad story all around. One thing I'm starting to appreciate is how unpredictable the ongoing stories are so far this season. I really have no idea where they're going or what's going to happen next. They introduce an annoying new detective, then ditch him after two episodes. Introduce a new detective...and now she hasn't been seen for two episodes. Lucas is setting himself up for trouble by creating a false witness...then Vega gets him out of it. It looks like Betty's attacker might go free...and then he's convicted. Vega gets in trouble with the chief for talking to a reporter, then she's happy with him again, then she's mad at him again! Flynn has a one-night stand with an Interpol agent who's only in town for a case...but now he's staying! And she's not happy about it...but maybe she is? Four episodes left and I have no idea what's next. And that's pretty cool. I just hope the witness thing doesn't come back to bite Lucas in the ass and Vega doesn't get fired in the end. I want happy endings for everyone.

I sometimes find Leslie tiresome on SNL, but she was on fire tonight. That one question obviously won't dissuade anyone who thinks this version is too dirty, but when she revealed her answer I honestly was rolling in my seat. I'm still not crazy about them checking each other's answers, but in this case it bothered me less than usual. It was odd when that guy chose Cheryl for the final round after making such a big deal about Leah, but the answer was such a slam dunk she luckily didn't blow it.

Yep, pancakes was so obvious, but I LOVE when they get it at the last second. So exciting. So much fun! I really wanted her to say "Because I want to sit in a tub..." but after last week's "in the tub" fiasco I wasn't sure if that would be allowed. Best episodes yet. Non-annoying celebrities. Good game play. That's what I'm here for. -
Media: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Makes The News!

'Til It Happens To You has lost at both the Oscars and Grammys, so I don't think there's that much love for it. Especially since Gaga isn't nominated since she didn't write enough of it to qualify for Emmy consideration (you have to be credited with at least 20%; she has 10 to Diane Warren's 90. Warren is the sole nominee). I knew better than to expect any major nominations, since the average age of the Emmy voters is something like 70, and more youth-oriented shows seldom do well (outside of Girls, which had a mountain of hype behind it). But then, if Rachel and company go to this much trouble to woo the voters and still come up with nothing, then screw the voters: -
I must not have been paying close enough attention, because I didn't detect any chemistry between Angie and the Interpol agent, so the ending came out of nowhere. In retrospect, all the little moments they spent getting to know each other made sense, I guess, at least in terms of what the writer was building toward. Given what the girl screamed when they found her, I couldn't decide if she was a true believer who'd bought into the cause or if he'd just brainwashed her. Between Vega getting chewed out at the beginning and Lucas being shady, I spent most of the episode wondering if the season and series was going to end with both of them getting fired. After the end, Vega seems safe, but this still seems like it could end badly for everyone.

Here's what CTV's website says:

Angie said the murder/confession were six months ago. So yeah, it seemed like as soon as the mother got back into the country, she strapped on the bomb and marched to the police station. Too impatient for appeals, I guess. I have to admit, I didn't feel as bad for the victim as I suspect I should have. The whole time she was sticking her nose into the teacher's business, I kept thinking, "Girl, you are stupid. You are a teenager. You're never going to be able to break that story in the school paper, even if it were your business, which I'm doubtful it is." So when he killed her, I kind of just shrugged. The wife and unborn kid, them I'll feel bad for, not inept Nancy Drew. eta: While I didn't miss Angie's son, I did like the ending and it was kind of nice to see him one more time before the show ends. Glad to see this is the kind of show that doesn't forget details about the characters' lives like that.

I don't get the point of Kennicki. Why bother introduce him for only two episodes, only to ditch him? Did they just realize the character wasn't working? Was the actress playing the new detective not available at the start of the season and he always intended to be a placeholder until she could start? It's just so weird to bother with him for two episodes.
-
They established early in the episode that Tracy didn't have any close friends, only her online readers (who she presumably didn't mention the first kid to). Probably a deliberate choice on her part.
-
The most entertaining episodes yet for me, but I do hate it when they do a question where there's really only one answer. I mean, Rosie proved that there kinda sorta could be another answer, but as soon as Alec read it it was clear that contestant was going to win.

Jennifer Esposito is the new female cast member. Duane Henry is also officially a regular.

Yeah, that buzzer for rubber duckie was bulls---, prepositional phrase or not. Count me in as being unimpressed with Jeong. Not Martha and Snoop level bad, but still, annoying and semi-unengaged. Thank goodness Tisha and the contestant won. She wasn't great at the game for a lot of it, but she pulled it off in the end. The only celebrity I liked last night. Nope. After three weeks the shows have all remained steady, and above a 1. In week one Pyramid received a 1.6; in week three a 1.5. Not a failure in the least. -
Guess I'm just an easy touch then, because the biggest thought I had as the episode ended, the thought that I came here just to post, is "I love this show." Despite some logical issues I couldn't be bothered to worry about, I found the episode thoroughly entertaining. Not the best of the season by any means, but it got the job done. I'm going to miss this little adrenaline rush of a show. The action is more engaging and thrilling than just about anything else on TV right now, I love all the characters, and...I just love it. This episode only reminded me and reinforced it for me. I love this show.

Yeah, I don't care if it didn't feel like a season finale. I honestly laughed out loud more than once (especially in the "car chase" sequence), which hasn't happened with this show in quite a while. I like Sheldon's mom and she and Leonard's father were cute together. Good episode.- 99 replies

(Geez, first the system posted the comment seven times, then it deleted all of them instead of just leaving the first. Trying this again...) I thought from the start that they leaked it specifically to gauge the audience response before renewing it. Better to find out the reaction to a Beckett-less Season 9 before ordering it than after. If the reaction was, "To hell with that chick! We wants the BOYZZZZ! Only boys detecting! Plus random British chick and daughter. YAYYYY!" then they'd know renewing it was worth it. If the reaction was, well, the one they got, no point in renewing it, though they still had to go through the process of signing the actors just in case until the final decision was made. Didn't see this mentioned, but after the news broke Penny Johnson Gerald tweeted a pointed: "God don't like ugly". Heh.
-
I may be reading too much into this (though that's half the fun at this point), but I couldn't help notice in the final police station scene when Castle said Beckett would miss him when he was gone and Beckett replied "You're not going anywhere," she seemed to put the emphasis on "You're." Not the "not" (as in "You're not going anywhere.") or even the "anywhere" ("You're not going anywhere"), but "You're not going anywhere." As if he wasn't, but someone else is. Foreshadowing?
-
I thought that was a lot of fun. Loved all the creepy atmosphere, which would have made for a good Halloween episode, but was definitely still effective now. Have to admit, I found Beckett messing with Castle highly enjoyable for certain...(ahem) real-world reasons (and making Haley run away at the end? Heh.) But Castle going to his office alone to get the dagger instead of telling her when she was right there in the apartment with him was just stupid, and I don't know why the killer lowered the dagger when Castle called out his name instead of, you know, completing his mission and stabbing the guy. But those are the kinds of things I know I'm not supposed to think about. Still, really fun episode.

Thank you for pointing this out. I know Two and a Half Men is terrible enough to cast a pall over his work, but Lorre actually made a name for himself on women-driven shows. If anything, Two and a Half Men is the outlier and Mom is his "usual." He worked on Roseanne. He created Grace Under Fire, Cybill and Dharma and Greg, all of which were largely driven by female characters and relationships. Mom really feels a lot like him returning to his roots.
