I have never gotten candy at a wedding, nor have I ever heard of a candy "bar". But I love the concept because...I mean, candy! Fun!

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Incidentally, those Baby on Board signs (which I almost never see, actually) aren't a particular peeve of mine. I just think they're stupid. But lots of things are stupid and don't really bother me because I just ignore them, and those signs fall into that category. I don't have any allergy or other reaction to scented products but I tend to really dislike the types of scents that are put in soaps and other household products. I use unscented dryer sheets and unscented detergent, for example. What's annoying is when something that I would never expect to be scented is. For example, recently I bought two big boxes of Swiffer duster refills. Got them home, opened a box, and was assaulted with a very strong and horrible smell. Turns out the dusters were scented. If I'd known such a thing existed I would have carefully looked for boxes of unscented ones, but it never occurred to me for a second that anyone would ever want a scented duster. Ugh. -

Even discounting the possible arrogance of it, the reason I think the notion of putting a sign on your car in order to get people to be extra careful around you is because nobody is intentionally going to hit another car. Even the drivers who are reckless aren't going around thinking, "Gee, I hope I hit a car today!" Those drivers are behaving that way because they think they can do so and have no consequences. So putting a sign on that basically amounts to, "Don't hit my car. It is extra important because there's a baby inside," even if a person is willing to accept that it's extra important for that reason is just silly. Drivers typically make a point not to hit any car on the road. If they hit your car it will have been an accident. I do think reminders to drive carefully/alertly are in general a good idea. But I think those reminders should be...well, general. It's important to drive safely because controlling a massive, fast-moving piece of a machinery is a big responsibility and not taking it seriously puts you and people around you in danger. I think that discomfort/annoyance is exactly what people typically mean when they say they dislike babies. Not dislike in the sense that they think they're bad people. I love babies but I understand that when my friends who don't love them say they dislike babies they don't mean they think babies are evil or out to get them and it certainly doesn't mean they think people should stop having babies. It means they don't enjoy spending time with babies. -

The X-Files In-Jokes list is one of my most frequently used resources for XF (along with insidethex) and has been for over 15 years. It's great. I think it's awesome that both of those sites are still around, since most of the sites I frequented back when the show was still on are long gone from the web. -

I've seen this claim before but can find no evidence that it's true and Snopes says it isn't. Do you have a source for it? -

I tend to be a take-a-picture-of-the-thing sort of person, but I can say that when I was young and traveling with my family my mom would frequently insist on having at least one person in a picture and her reasoning was that if she just wanted a nice picture of the thing she could get a postcard or (at this point) find one online that was probably better than one she could take on her own. She wanted a picture that showed that we were there to make it more personal. Plus, having looked through many many photos of other people's trips I will say that I find it much more enjoyable if there's a mix of pictures with people and without than if they're all without. And in particular, if I'm looking back at photos from past trips--like looking at photo albums from family trips when I was a kid--it's definitely the photos with me and my sisters and parents and the sights in them that are most fun to see and bring back the most vivid memories. -
That video is great, though when they talked about Patsy's style I was sad there was no focus on her pyjamas (loooove Patsy and her pyjamas). They mentioned Trixie's PJs but not Patsy's! But my favorite part is at the end talking about Chummy when Miranda starts doing her thing when she repeats a word. "Can't stop saying mufti now. It's a great word. Mufti!" Oh, Miranda.

Note: I have watched this whole season, but I'll be very careful not to say anything spoilery. I agree. It's certainly true that Patsy and Delia couldn't expect to find broad acceptance of their relationship in society and even necessarily among those at Nonnatus. However, even back in the fifties (is it still the fifties on the show?) and before people did carry on long-term romantic relationships with people of the same sex and sometimes family or close friends would be well aware, even if nobody spoke it aloud. Which means that Patsy is likely to stay closeted with regards to the general public--and wisely so--but doesn't necessarily have to be super secretive when it comes to the people she's close to even if she never announces anything openly. As others have mentioned, Sister Julienne seems to be the sort of person who is very open and accepting of people whose lives or lifestyles are very different from hers, even if she doesn't necessarily think what they're doing is "right". I wouldn't consider it at all unreasonable for her to be kind to Patsy and understanding of her situation and supportive of her in the face of any conflict. The person whose reaction is of most interest to me is Trixie since Trixie and Patsy are fairly close. Because, while Trixie is a modern sort of girl as far as style is concerned, I'm not sure she'd easily understand or accept Patsy being a lesbian. She strikes me as the sort of person who would just be shocked by it and react negatively more from the shock (and a complete inability to identify) than any strong sense that it's fundamentally wrong. Yep. I think Call the Midwife is generally a very optimistic show, and even in this case there was a happy-ish ending with the living twin, but yeah...they were just way too happy at the beginning. No way was it going to be smooth sailing for them. And the way it played out I found it incredibly emotionally affecting. I think this was just a really wonderfully written and acted episode. I thought the emotional responses of all of the characters involved were very true and played out very effectively. Yes, I think the loss of Jenny has helped make the show feel a little bit more fresh. I liked Jenny just fine, but I do think this show works better with focus shifting among the various characters. Because it's just filled with great characters pretty much across the board. Even with Chummy gone--and I do particularly love Chummy and Miranda Hart in general--I don't consciously miss her because I love the other characters as well.

As I am strongly in favor of informal weddings/receptions (not that I'm at all opposed to formal ones, but I think doing something informal is an equally good way to celebrate), I see nothing wrong with serving pizza. It wouldn't be my choice--if I were having an informal reception I'd probably go cookout style and do burgers/chicken/steak tips/etc.--but I could certainly imagine it.

The X-Files Revival: All Speculation Leads to the Truth

There are at least two FtF hallway scene outtakes that have been released. , where Scully pushes Mulder up against the wall, and this one where Mulder carries Scully off. There may be more for all I know. I wasn't aware that any aired in theatres after the credits. Definitely. -
I think of Aubrey as a really solid episode, though not a standout. I was curious how it did in our elimination game and it went out in the third round of eliminations (though I never voted to eliminate it), which I find a little surprising. It's not one I watch much, though, because I find it scary and I'm a wimp when it comes to scary episodes.

Patsy joining Nonnatus House and Trixie meeting the vicar both happened in season 3. Jenny left at the end of that season though she didn't get married*. Cynthia deciding to become a nun happened in the Christmas special. The reason it might feel like there's been a whole season without Jenny is because, though she hadn't left permanently, she was away for a couple of episodes in season 3 (specifically the episodes in which Patsy arrived and Trixie met Tom) after her boyfriend died. *That is to say she didn't get married yet in the show timeline. In the Christmas special there were scenes of her in present day and she had in fact gotten married at some point.

I think it's easier to apply to more these days since applications are done online and a lot of schools accept the Common App (though some require a supplement also). Common App was around when I was applying to colleges but it wasn't nearly as widely accepted. Another difference I've noticed is that it seems to be more common for schools to have non-binding early admissions, so a LOT of my students apply early to schools. None of the schools I applied to had that option. One of my sisters did apply early but it was early decision (so binding) and she got in, so that meant she only ever did one college application.
-
I think I remember my college application results: I got accepted to 3 (Carleton, Macalester, Bowdoin), waitlisted at 1 (Amherst), and rejected by 1 (Wesleyan). I'm not entirely certain that last one was a rejection rather than a waitlist, but since I wasn't going either way (it not having been a top preference) it didn't leave that big an impression. It's the same way with grad school. There were really only four schools I was interested in and I remember the responses from them (3 acceptances and 1 waitlist) but I applied to at least twice that many schools and don't remember all the results. I remember that whole thing with the codes. Except at the time I took the SATs I didn't know what schools I'd be applying to. I think I kind of chose some pretty randomly. But I don't remember how the whole system worked--was it like they'd send your scores to those schools for free but then when you wanted them sent to other schools later you had to pay? I dunno. I also remember getting so many mailings from different schools, the vast majority of which I would never have had any interest in, and since I was the third child in fairly quick succession (oldest was 3 years ahead of me in school and middle was 1 year) that meant we'd had those mailings flooding our mailbox pretty constantly for at least four years. I also remember getting a number of mailings from the Army, including some with little gifts (like I think I got a little keychain flashlight in one or something?) and they were the only people who actually called me on the phone and all I could think was, "Um...you guys really don't know who you're talking to because if you did you'd know that you don't want me."

Here's a moment later, with the skull. Yeah, this feels awfully rushed. But the thing that concerns me most is that it be well written, and with a team of writers who are used to writing on a tight schedule I guess this isn't really pushing it all that much. I hope.
-
If it's a character flaw then I share it. Though I guess it's not so much pranks in general. I think there are good pranks that are fun and funny for all involved. But so many pranks seem designed to make people feel stupid and I don't like that at all. When someone pulls them on a person they're close to who they know enjoys that sort of thing, fine, but as a general rule I don't really advocate making people feel stupid or laughed at.
-
Well, if CSM can be on the show then certain The Lone Gunmen could be. (I tend to forget they're not alive since I never watched season 9.) Didn't we see his flesh burn off? I have a memory of seeing his skull in flames or something similar. So basically the only way he could be alive is through some supersoldiery thing that I am not remotely interested in. But I could see him being involved in some sort of flashback.

The X-Files Revival: All Speculation Leads to the Truth
smrou replied to Primetimer's topic in The X-Files [V]
Well I for one would highly enjoy a Mulder/Scully sex scene, but a) I know that'll never happen (see before re: Chris Carter's puritanism) and I accept that and b) I'm not really sure how one would fit into a typical XF episode given, as mentioned before, the decided lack of emphasis/screen-time on life outside work. I think the key is what Bastet said before, namely that these are the same people we already know and there's no reason for them to be different just because they're now in an established romantic relationship. I mean, for most of the original run of the show--certainly from the cancer arc on if not before--Mulder and Scully were each other's significant others just without actually having sex and living together. Mulder even said as much in season 7 ("not in the widely understood definition of the word"). So I guess I think that, yeah, CC is able to write a long-term relationship because that's what Mulder and Scully were. Granted, I'll be very disappointed if there isn't explicit mention/representation of the fact that they're an actual couple now, but I really view that as something that can be shown with a little scene or line within a scene here and there* and shouldn't be a focus of the episodes. I would hope that every attempt would be made to maintain the Mulder/Scully dynamic that we all know and love from before. And given the fact that CC has never seemed particularly on board with Mulder and Scully being romantic in the first place I actually kind of trust him to do that. If he decides that he needs to really tackle the relationship rather than just let it be a thing that's happening in the background...then yeah, I'd be worried. *Like...in an emotional scene like at the end of Amor Fati they could simply kiss on the mouth like normal people instead of Scully making out with Mulder's forehead, y'know? Or...when Scully gets her guaranteed-to-happen phone call at 11:21 PM she can be in bed with Mulder instead of alone. (I'd say naked in bed, but that's hoping for too much.) You're no fun. ;) -
The X-Files Revival: All Speculation Leads to the Truth
smrou replied to Primetimer's topic in The X-Files [V]
I don't think that's true. The show never had much emphasize on their personal lives--we got glimpses of their outside work lives here and there by they were minimal--so I don't think it's that different now that Mulder and Scully are an established couple nor do I think it's any less interesting. Just...you know, show that they're living together, let us see them kiss a few times, and I think that will do the trick. (I'd suggest that a sex scene would keep people's interest, but Chris Carter's like some kind of puritan where sex is concerned so I know it's not gonna happen.) -
Stupid stupid stupid idea. What the hell would be the point? I know that I'm just one person and not everyone feels the way that I do, but I'm pretty confident that those who are excited about this revival are excited at the prospect of specifically seeing Mulder and Scully (and to a lesser extent probably Skinner) and that's the real draw. Sure, people like Doggett and Reyes, but I don't think many people are clamoring to see them again and any screen time they have will be resented because it will mean less focus on Mulder and Scully. Seriously, it's such a bad idea. This is fantastic news. This is another reason why I'm more optimistic about this limited run of episodes than I would be about a movie. Because Chris Carter would probably write the entire film script on his own--maybe with input from others, but he'd craft the story at minimum--but when it comes to episodes he's always had lots of people contributing.
-
My read, which is obviously highly suspect without knowing the people involved and exactly what their history is, is that clearly the ex isn't really over your friend--if she were she wouldn't have that emotional reaction--but that doesn't necessarily mean she'd go out with her again if given the opportunity. She obviously still has feelings regarding your friend, but they could be primarily feelings of hurt or anger. Which would not make her inclined to want to get involved with her again.

I don't know the Cadillac one, but that Android commercial is fantastic. The first (and I think only) time I saw it I actually rewound to watch it again. Though that was at least 80% in order to hear "Ooh-de-lally" again.

I'm not particularly spoilerphobic in general--I am for certain shows where there's a good deal of mystery or suspense and that's a big part of what I find enjoyable--and I wasn't back when XF was on the air originally. But back then at least as far as what I learned about episodes before they aired, as someone who wasn't seeking out spoilers but wasn't avoiding them, it usually didn't include a whole lot of detail. These days it seems like often the level of detail that gets spread around is far more significant. So once we get closer to shooting time and then airing time I may decide I want to go mostly spoiler free, though I know CC tends to be very secretive so I'm not super worried. But for now I'm all about getting some news about at least broad concepts--things like whether William will be part of the story, as Bastet mentioned--and eventually pictures from set. So I think I'll be at home in this thread as well.
