I don't watch a lot of international TV other than the occasional British, Australian, or Canadian show but Los Hombres de Paco was a Spanish show that had a prominent storyline involving the relationship between Pepa and Silvia, two women (a cop and a forensic scientist, respectively). I haven't ever watched the show as a whole, but I've watched the whole Pepa/Silvia plotline on Youtube. But actually I just remembered that I read this piece from AfterEllen recently that's about international LGBT TV and is actually the introduction to a weekly column on the subject.

Small Talk: The Looooove. The Priiiiiide. Welcome Home.

I just don't see the point of it. It's what Mindy McIndy said: it's just not XF to me if it's not Mulder and Scully. It's nothing against Doggett/Reyes and Patrick/Gish, though I did find Doggett to be pretty boring, but...I just couldn't bring myself to care. -

And I will give the opposite response of just give up, there's no point in watching past the end of season 7. Or maybe there are a few episodes important to watch (a couple, but not all, of the S8 episodes that have Mulder in them), but I never watched any of season 9 except the finale and find I don't regret it in the least. -
Top Gear is as much a comedy show as a car show, though as someone who has a particular interest in cars the car bit is what first drew me to it. I used to watch it religiously but stopped some years ago because I began to tire of it (and, more specifically, found Jeremy Clarkson more and more difficult to take). At any rate, the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment is only about ten minutes long. If you record it you could just skip to that part.

For folks who missed the video, though, it's airing on BBC America today. Definitely watch it. She's ridiculously adorable in the segment.

That was a particularly tough episode for me for some reason. I think largely just because of the agonizing decisions that had to be made by Sister Evangelina and then the two sets of parents. And I'm sure every moment Sister Evangelina was crying I was as well. And then of course the Patsy/Delia relationship is tough because I want so much for them to be able to just be happy together and it's not nearly that easy. Thankfully there's the Fred/Violet storyline to bring a little cheer to everything. They're just super adorable.

Aw, BYAM, your kitty is adorable! And I happen to be partial to tuxies, at least at the moment, because my current my kitty is also a tuxie. And also super cuddly.

I haven't seen enough of Timothy in the classroom to seriously question his teaching, but as others have said in this thread I find it difficult to be sympathetic to his attitude. I'm a high school teacher and I know that I and my coworkers appreciate having flexibility in how (and, to a lesser extent, what) we teach and if the administration was coming down on Timothy for not being completely by the book or trying to dictate exactly what he does in his classroom I'd be on his side. But what exactly did they ask him to do? Emphasize critical thinking and teach more non-fiction? That hardly seems like it's taking the reins out of his hands or asking him to explicitly instruct students in test-taking. In fact, it sounds a lot like entirely appropriate and important things to teach. As for the specific content, I thought it was "The Lottery" that they were discussing in class and making comparisons to Hunger Games. It wasn't clear to me if Hunger Games was actually part of the curriculum or if it was just something Timothy was contrasting "The Lottery" with because the students were familiar with it already. I always take issue with TV shows (and probably movies, though I think of it as more of a TV thing) where the bell rings and as students are packing up the teacher tosses a writing assignment at them like that. Granted, I often scramble to write my HW assignments on the board as kids are packing up, but that's when it's just some textbook problems for them to do (I teach physics). When it's something more involved there needs to be time to give more explanation and some parameters. So my initial response to that assignment was more along the lines of, "Ugh, this annoying 'shout out a prompt as kids leave the room' trope," than questioning Timothy's actual teaching.

I was totally screaming at my phone "Chuck Mangione. You're talking about CHUCK MANGIONE!" A name I'm pretty sure I only know because of King of the Hill.

"I'll give you two guesses, one of them is wrong" The Trivia Thread!

Right?! I originally only asked for ten songs, then upped it to fifteen because I knew it would be so easy to get 5-6 songs just from those two episodes alone. I considered changing the question to listing episodes that used pop music (and naming at least one song). That would be "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted". Yep. And "My Weakness" was used earlier in the same season in Closure. Well, there are definitely fifteen named already. My favorites have all been mentioned. It was thinking of "Wonderful Wonderful" and "Doesn't Somebody Want to be Wanted" (mentioned in a recent Extra Hot Great in which "Never Again" was the canon submission) that prompted the question, but my other favorite uses of pop music on the show are "Red Right Hand", "Twilight Time", and "I'm Only Happy When It Rains". So that win goes to Bastet. Nicely done. -

Okay, new question. Most of the background music on the series is original by Mark Snow and there's also sometimes some classical music by various composers. However, occasionally the soundtrack includes pop music*, sometimes used very memorably though not always. Name...let's go with fifteen songs the show has used and the episode in which the song played. Note: if it's a song that's merely sung/quoted by a character (for example, Mulder singing "Shaft" or Scully singing "Joy the the World") that doesn't count. *I'm not sure if "pop music" is quite what I'm looking for here, but it's the best term I could think of. I intend it very generically. -

Okay, this is one that I knew right off the bat but didn't answer because it would mean I'd have to come up with the next question (I'm suuuuuper lazy!), but I've decided that's a burden I can handle. So. It's Grover Cleveland Alexander High, which is mocking David Duchovny for his incorrect response on Celebrity Jeopardy!. -
Oh my goodness, every scene he was in I was just totally captivated by how adorable he was. Glad to see Shelagh getting back to nursing.

I know I've seen lists of XF titles from other countries, but I certainly don't remember any. Well that's not true. I remember that it's Akte X in Germany, but I'm pretty sure that's just a direct translation. ETA: I was wondering where I'd seen a list like this so I just checked the XF In-Joke List site and it has it. So that's where I've seen it and that also means I could answer this easily now, but only by cheating. -
There are a few reasons I often do this. 1) The berm left by the plow at the end of the driveway. Even on a regular driveway the snow left by the plow is the toughest part to deal with, but my driveway is right on a 90º turn in my road (and it's on the outside of the turn) so as the plow makes that turn it drops a lot of snow in my driveway. The longer I wait to go out with the snowblower the more times the plow goes through and the more difficult that berm becomes. So if there's going to be a lot of snow I find it a lot easier to do it a couple times over the course of a storm rather than once when it's all finished and it's an enormous pain in the ass. 2) Timing. I don't want to shovel/snowblow after dark and if it's snowing all day I would often have to if I waited until it stopped. And if I wait until morning that just gives the snow more time to compact and get heavier and for the plow to run through a few more times, making the berm particularly difficult. This reason depends on the type of snow. With the super light powder we've been getting it's not really a consideration. 3) If I don't know that the next day is a snow day (which I never do until after dark at least) then I have to think about how I'm going to get my car out in the morning around 6 AM. I don't want to wake up at 3 to clear the whole storm worth of snow from my driveway before work so if I get rid of as much snow as there is the previous evening then there isn't as much to do in the morning. And chances are I can just shovel the berm and drive out without shoveling the whole driveway in the dark of early morning. For this last storm, which dropped 15 inches in my town, I was away. So I got to come home to that glorious gift (though I knew it was going to be happening, of course). So I shoveled my way up my walkway then cleared the driveway all in one go. But man, it's gotten so difficult to do the end of the driveway because the snow on either side is so high that the snowblower can't even come close to getting the snow over it except when I have it tipped back pretty far on its back wheels.

Okay, for real it's a little embarrassing how swoony I, a 34-year-old woman, was at that little pinky clutch. Like, Jude's reaction? (Which was so well acted, I thought.) Had nothing on my reaction. But then later I found myself wondering about what Connor's thinking and feeling here. Mostly I wonder how spontaneous that was. Was Connor just playing along with that girl? He described her as "hot" to Jude, and yet when they did go out he seemed to totally disregard her in favor of touching pinkies with Jude. Was it only when sitting there next to Jude that he started to feel something? I guess knowing more detail about their history (i.e. did more happen in the tent than we've been informed of) might help. It read spontaneous to me, but thinking back to it now I feel less sure. At any rate, I really like the girl who was Jude's "date" for the movies and hope she sticks around.

For the record, I would totally eat asshole-shaped chocolate.

In the Big Inning - The Unnatural Die Wahrheit ist irgenwo da draußen - Triangle Trust No One - The Erlenmeyer Flask (I think!) I remember it was something Navajo for Anasazi, but hell if I can reproduce it. Argh. That's only 3.5. I thought I might be able to actually get to five. And I can remember a few more of the taglines (without knowing the episodes), but not enough to get to 10. -

I know one. In Dreamland (the second one, I'm pretty sure) Morris Fletcher told The Lone Gunmen that Saddam Hussein was actually just a character played by an actor named John Gilnitz. That's the only one I can remember, though. Which is frustrating, because when I'm watching and the name comes up I always notice, but now I just can't remember when that has happened. -
I watched Ben and Kate, too and really liked it. It seems like almost everyone here watched that show. But somehow I didn't realize before that the woman from that show is one of the stars of Fifty Shades. Don't know how I missed that.

I don't suppose those glasses he wore in First Person Shooter count? They were definitely dark glasses, but were for the game not the sun. (Never Again is the only other one I could think of.) -
I don't know about this thing people do, going to something as a joke. All that does is contribute to its success, after all. If critics pan it and viewers mock it but it makes a shit-ton of money, then that's all that will really be taken away from it. I mean, not that it's for me to decide how other people spend their money or that I think people doing that sort of thing are doing something wrong or anything like that, I'm just not sure it makes sense to me. I think if I wanted to see something as a joke I'd do what Pixel said and wait until it's on Netflix or something. But maybe that just says more about how cheap I am than anything else.

Does Terry O'Quinn count? He played one character (don't know the name) in "Aubrey" and then played SAC Michaud in Fight the Future. But that's one episode and the movie, so I don't know if you're counting it. But he's the only one who came to mind right off the bat. Wait! He was in another episode, wasn't he? In season nine (which I didn't watch)? Still, I haven't thought of any others yet. -
I'm interested, Kev! My mom makes a good carrot cake (she makes it every year for my birthday) but...you know, I don't think I've ever made one. And it's my favorite cake! That's pretty ridiculous. But then I guess I don't bake cakes often at all. Only for special occasions, really, and since carrot cake is my birthday cake, I'm not the one who makes it (I do usually make my dad's cake and I always make my mom's...and I'm now remembering her birthday is this Sunday, so I better do that tomorrow because I'll likely want to hunker down on Sunday).
