S11.E11: Top 10 Perform + Eliminations
dusang replied to Bella's topic in So You Think You Can Dance
Personally, I would think the AfterBuzz episode related to the SYTYCD episode could go into the specific episode thread. I'm just watching it now, I never have watched it before. This is going to sound stupid, based on the fact that we theoretically get "expert opinions" after each dance, but I'm always amazed to hear the level of detail that real dance experts see in a performance. Nick and Jaimie are pulling out details I never would have noticed. -

No, I'm thinking of one where there was actually a cage on the stage and the girl definitely had a long extension ponytail that she flipped a lot and possibly a faux-tail on her ass. Dan was definitely guest judging. Although good guess on this one! Who knew there was such a plethora to choose from! -

Yeah -- Blake did a routine in SYTYCD-Canada S1 where guest judge Dan Karaty was like "that would not get by the censors in the US." (I wish I could find a clip of Dan saying that -- he looked so stunned... and like he possibly wouldn't be giving a standing O for a few minutes.) The following season Blake upped the ante and did an even more "sexy" dance to stun Dan but (IMHO) he overshot and went from "sexy" to "tacky". (I don't remember the dancers or the song, though, so I can't find a clip.) But Blake was a regular choreographer and judge on SYTYCD-Canada and did some really great routines. -
Soooo... I have a real-life exam coming up that I'm super stressed for so I'm being really grown up and dealing with my stress in a reasonable way: avoiding studying by watching B99 and reading these boards constantly. So my stress levels are now manifesting as constant low-level nausea and I have a burning need to talk about B99 at all times. Just rewatched The Apartment. This episode had a few more logical flaws than some others but I still love it. Jake is a bit more ridiculous than usual -- the mail tub, the going-to-a-loan-shark (I really hope he returned that money ASAP and isn't continuing under that added debt), followed by Jake being able to "run the numbers" to determine that Gina would make a profit (which, incidentally, I don't think she could in the short term). (Also, I hope there was a second bathtub/shower somewhere in that apartment.) Although, the montage of apartment-hunting was hilarious and sadly relatable. But I love Santiago's evaluation -- every part of it but particularly when Jake runs through all of her flaws and then reveals that he found her list. (Although, to be super nitpicky, she complains about Jake "smelling like an ashtray" in Old School so it's a bit odd to reveal that she actually stress-smokes.) Also, Andre Braugher's gravitas is amazing. "Proud, mama hen." indeed!!

I feel like Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domnhall Gleeson (yeah, I can't spell), et al must really like this movie to have made themselves available for that band appearance. I wonder if Jon was miffed that he had to talk about An Honourable Woman with Maggie and Stephen just got to listen to her sing!!

The video links are messed up -- there are three of Ade & Valerie and two for the brightly coloured group dance. Also, did they forget the lighting cues for the ballet piece? They were literally dancing in the dark. -

Yes -- they did the superhero dance, which I believe was in the "All-Stars Choreo & Dance" week. -
"The Daily Show": Week of 8/4/14

It was a clever spin on media panic to incorporate NYC real estate. I mean, if you're going for the Brockman "without knowing precisely what the danger is, would you say it's time for our viewers to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside?" you might as well personally benefit from it, you know? -
Yeah... I'll never understand what CBS was thinking at that point. And then introducing the Seaver character by the abominable Rachel Nichols... the only worse move would have been to hire Elisabeth Rohm. Blergh. Sorry, I think I'm straying from topic. I just saw an early Emily episode where she confesses to being a nerd and then bonds with Morgan over Kurt Vonnegut. I'll buy Emily as a nerd but I do not buy being a fan of Vonnegut to be evidence of said nerdiness. Or maybe I'm defining nerd too narrowly? Also, to quote a great man of our time: "You know, "nerd culture" is mainstream now. So, when you use the word "nerd" derogatorily, it means you're the one that's out of the zeitgeist."

I thought the season six departures were network mandated?

Was that really Christina for all of it? Also, did everyone notice the woman in the backrow get on her knees?? Damn that show was risque ahead of its time!! -
Honestly, I didn't see most of the spy arc, so all I know about it is how much people hated it. I did notice, in a recent rewatch of the Tobias episodes, that JJ (and Hotch) called Emily out on her "unflinching" approach to the work and she claimed to be "better at compartmentalizing." In retrospect, that could be viewed as laying groundwork for her having secret field experience. Of course, even if they did intentionally lay that groundwork, they clearly didn't handle the endgame very well.

I really enjoyed how they took the "straight man" (Holt), made him have a complete freak out, and never felt the need to break him from being the straight man. There was nothing out of character.
-
No matter how hard-core his need to escape, a person of Reid's experience and personality making the conscious choice to take Dilaudid will never ring true for me. Also, based on the Henkel episodes and the description of the effects of Dilaudid, making that his drug of choice while still working in the field and functioning in life is even more ridiculous.

S01.E13: Argentine Default and Native Advertising
dusang replied to maraleia's topic in Last Week Tonight
Yeaaaaah, @Victor the Crab that's why you noticed his name. Actually, again with the Port Authority thing -- I was just waiting for John to say something about how absurd it is for the Port Authority to claim any control of the image of an ENTIRE SKYLINE. Much like the Argentina piece, I felt like the punch line was absent. -
Should I put this here? Or should/do we have a separate thread for web exclusives? ETA: we do now! Thanks, @Athena!

Although I do have problems with the entire addiction arc and how the team failed to acknowledge it, my larger problem is how they got Reid hooked on drugs in the first place -- I can see him having a downward spiral from the Henkel thing and conceivably ending up hooked on alcohol or even prescription pain meds but I do not see him taking the same drugs that Tobias gave him.

I loved that they spent most of the credits focusing on his abs. That's the kind of in-depth reporting I like to see. (Sorry, I don't know who he is.) Although you remind me that I did really like the piece on "native advertising.". -

That was an oddly lackluster episode. I have huge problems with hedge funds and the insane power they wield politically and economically. George Soros and his hedge funds basically bankrupted the Bank of England through deliberate manipulation of the Euro -- the really scary part is that he literally had access to more money than the Bank of England. Hedge funds and currency speculation are hugely complex and generally tedious subjects but, it he was going to cover it at all, I'm disappointed that John did such a strangely superficial job of it. -
Semi-random but since the "empathy" convo is there and I just saw that episode again -- I have always hated Morgan saying that. It's not "empathy" when you're having PTSD flashbacks of a recent trauma; it's PTSD flashbacks of a recent trauma. (Bravo in Canada is running like a 48-hour marathon of CM -- I just watched the conclusion of the Tobias episode and then this follow up (sorry, I don't know episode titles) and I still really hate this as an origin story for drug addiction -- why on earth would Reid choose to take the drugs that were forced on him and gave him bad trips?? Also, knowing that he had been injected with illegal substances, why wouldn't he have been taken to the hospital and observed for dangerous side-effects???)

Howard Wolowitz/Simon Helberg: Did You Know He Went to Space?
dusang replied to Lisin's topic in The Big Bang Theory [V]
I just watched a rerun of one of the eps when he's in space - his Skypes with Bernie are comic genius! I really believe he is the unsung hero of this show. Also, he looked shockingly good on the space station. Too bad they can't give him a full makeover on terra firma. -
Thanks all! I guessed the "fan girls" but HT presented too many possibilities.

I tried but just came up with Hawaian Tropical Fruit Growers - what's HTFG?

Is Simpsons still that solid in the ratings?
