FilmNight: Movies you watched recently
Shannon L. replied to Rushmoras's topic in Everything Else About Movies
I watched Companion the other night and really enjoyed it, but I think it would have been more fun if they hadn't given away the who Iris was in the trailer. It was still fun, though, with another twist that I never picked up on. If you like dark comedies, you might like this one. -
Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals

Absolutely. His comic timing is what made that film and it will always be a favorite of mine. I've been looking at remarks about Val Kilmer on many different forums and very few people have mentioned Real Genius, so yes, it's definitely underrated. -

I went to see Novocaine today. It was about what I expected: over the top, really violent, and ridiculous, but it was fun. It wasn't a bad way to kill an afternoon. -
Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

My grandfather's funeral was in a church. They did drape his coffin with a flag and have military officers fold it and present it to my grandmother, but that was it. -
I'm finally near the end of the first season and for a few episodes now, they've all gotten a lot better. I think the writers finally figured out what the characters' true personalities would be and the actors have settled into them well. I still don't like certain ones, but overall, I'm not as annoyed by them as I was in the beginning. However, I'm glad that Mark and Jennifer end up divorced (as sad as that is). While I understand some of her complaints about Mark, I'm find her unbearable.

With the exception of a couple of episodes, I've only seen ER once and that was when it first aired. I also never finished it because I did eventually lose interest in the story lines and new characters. I decided to rewatch it, because I remember really enjoying it and this time, I want to get all the way through it. I'm seven episodes in and I hate almost every one of them. lol! Mark and Carter are ok, I feel sorry for Susan and she seems mostly nice, considering. I do remember some of Carol's story lines and know that she turns into a character that I like, but besides them and one or two of the nurses, I'm finding myself appalled at many of them in every episode so far.

OCD doesn't always manifest itself with extreme cleanliness and order. I don't care if my clothes are hung in the closet without any kind of order and there is a lot of clutter in my house. My OCD manifests itself differently. We're also not all serial killers, but we've already discussed that 😂- 8.4k replies

I watched The Gorge (Apple+) last night. It was.....something. I'm really not even sure how to describe it. All I can say is that while I was watching it, I found the first half very slow, but interesting, but throughout the second half, I found myself losing interest, which is ironic, since that's when the action really picked up. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone. -
This happened to come up in my FB page today. I looked into it and it's true. Lol! I thought Back to the Future was very clever and had me interested in what it meant. Darth Vadar and Vulcan were perfect references and I never would have been interested in a movie called Spaceman from Pluto.

I didn't mind the second or third movies, but the first one was excellent. Even today, it holds up really well. I already loved Michael J. Fox from Family Ties and this just cemented it. A personal reason for me loving the movie is because of dad. He's not a big movie person. He's seen some that he likes, but overall, he just doesn't care about movies. When this came out, we were on family vacation and we talked him into taking us to see it and to see him smiling and laughing through the whole thing just made my day.

I watched Down Periscope last night for the first time in a long time. With the exception of some of the sexual harassment jokes, it holds up well for a screwball comedy. And, while I'm typically not a fan of fart jokes, this one, once again, had me rolling, especially when followed immediately by the (brilliant!) marine life imitations. -
But they managed so well. I don't watch as many sitcoms as I used to, so I don't know when they stopped doing fun theme songs, but I checked The Big Bang Theory, which is the most recent one I can think of, and it was only 20 seconds long. The Golden Girls and Friends were 40 and M*A*S*H was 45. I kind of miss them, but it's not a big deal for me that they don't have them anymore. I don't see how they ate up too much time, though.

I think of that scene every time I buy hot dogs and buns.

Personally, while I understand pride, I've never understood being prideful to the extent of making yourself stressed out or miserable by turning down help, so if my husband told me that my future in-laws, who are exceedingly wealthy (the upstairs bathroom in their Bel Air home is the "seventh" door on the left) and from what I could tell, very kind and loving, offered to help, then I'd have said that maybe they could pay for....whatever....as well as flying their own Danish cousins in for the wedding.

Something I've noticed while listening to the song Popular on my phone is how good Ariana is. There's so much going on in the scene to look at that I missed, or didn't appreciate, some of the vocal choices she made. I did hear some people say that she was trying too hard to be Kristen Chenowith, and I can kind of hear that in this particular song, but I still give her props for how well she played the role.

According to the article I read, they couldn't figure out how to market it, which doesn't make sense to me, but it was a really different kind of cartoon for Disney at the time.

I don't know that I'll like it more than the first one, or even as much, but I'm in.

I still to this day say "Bring it on" in that serious tone that Kuzco uses. I also love "Well, which is it? That's a pretty crucial conjunction", but you can't work that into normal conversations. lol I agree that John Goodman had the right level of paternal warmth and Kronk? Omg....when he does his own theme music? His horrified reaction when Yzma pops up in bed with cucumber slices on her eyes? 🤣 The casting was great, but I think Patrick Warburton was exactly what they needed to push it into perfection. There was a lot of sarcasm. "It's a good thing you're not a big, fat, guy or this would be really difficult" makes me both wince and laugh. It's one of the lines that I'm pretty sure wouldn't make it into a Disney movie these days.
-
Imo, this is such an underrated movie. You rarely hear experts mention it when talking about Disney films. These days, it has a bit of a cult following. My kids, one who was too young to see it when it first came out, and the other who wasn't even born yet, love it. My husband and I list it as one of our favorite Disney movies. The making of it is a really interesting story and it's honestly surprising that it was ever made in the first place. We watched it again the other day and there are a few jokes that probably wouldn't make it in a movie today, but overall, it holds up really well. Edited: The link I posted wasn't working and I can't figure out why, so I removed it. If you are interested, just google "oral history of The Emperor's New Groove" and the Vulture article should come up.

We watched The Emperor's New Groove the other night for the first time in well over a decade. Some of the jokes might be considered too offensive today, but otherwise it holds up. I read an oral history on the making of it and it's quite amazing that it came together. Apparently, it's become a cult classic. Our two kids, both in their 20s, one of whom wasn't even born when it came out, love it. I'm sorry it wasn't promoted well and isn't discussed much when talking about Disney movies (at least not from people writing the articles or making the "Best of" lists). It's so underrated. -

Quotable Quotes: Lines from TV You've Made Your Own
Shannon L. replied to ABay's topic in Everything Else TV
Back when Arrested Development was reported to be canceled, some fans suggested that we make t-shirts that said "Annyeong, Hermano!" As a means of showing our love for it. I'll occasionally say that to someone who's familiar with the show (otherwise it would make no sense to the person I said it to). -
