Bummer. I wanted Simone to conclude her Olympics on a high, but I’m also really excited for Rebecca. She deserves the be a gold medalist.

Brody Malone is so stone faced and void of emotion except when Stephen Nedoroscik does pummel horse.

They definitely showed it during the prime time broadcast. You heard the music in the background during someone’s beam routine, but then they went back and showed Flavia’s floor routine a little later.
-
To be fair, they aired the final Japanese and Chinese athletes on bar, but it took FOREVER for that last score to post. The announcers could have built the tension on what score was needed to decide gold, but I think everyone was just swept up in the excitement of the US actually delivering. What was insane was the announcers were talking about the Chinese athlete who fell twice on bar as it was happening, but they refused to cut away from Steve Whatshisface measuring the spacing between his pommel setup. China was blowing the gold medal in realtime and that’s what was shown?

When the games are in LA, they will likely air it live on E! like they did yesterday and then air the final rotation live on NBC. There just isn’t enough airtime to show the whole thing in Primetime. Currently they’re cutting to top contenders between US events, so just Japan, China, and GB, although they showed some Ukrainian vaults too. They love covering vaults because they’re so quick. It’s low commitment.

Olympic Fashion: Go for the Gold... Lamé!
absnow54 replied to Trini's topic in 2024 Paris Olympic Games
I also like the understated design for Team France. Team Brasil was another favorite. -
I know it happens nearly every time, but it’s just so devastating to have such a strong showing and score easily within the Top 10 (she’s number 3 halfway through the qualifying rounds!) and not be able to compete. And the US is so strong, the only individual apparatus Jordan can compete on is Floor. I know those are the rules, but can understand the disappointment.

This is what I was unclear on. Was she covering for Mae in those final scenes, or was the entire series her setting up Sol to fail and botching the internal investigation to sabotage the Jedi order? It felt like a page out of Palpletine’s book where he infiltrated and sabotaged various parts of the republic to gain more power. She seemed pleased when the senate decided they wanted more oversight over the Jedi.

I was surprised that Sol went full evil and was going to shoot May’s ship down to cover up his crimes. I thought a level head was going to prevail, and he was going to see he lost his way, but instead the woodchuck had to stop him. I also thought the woodchuck was going to intentionally lead the Jedi the wrong way when they had him tracking May, because he recognized the Jedi were all cray. I thought they did a good job with the twist that the “villains” were the heroes of this story. I certainly was rooting for them by the end.

Yeah, The Book of Boba Fett was three episodes too long, so they started writing episodes for the Mandalorian instead. The Acolyte is telling a single story in a non-linear way, but as someone else already mentioned, it feels like a rough draft that was never properly fleshed out.

I kept hearing the same thing! And Osha’s motivation to be a Jedi has been bugging me too, because Sol kept encouraging her to join so she could be around other people like her, but she’s in a coven of Force sensitive witches. They’re all like her. What was that? I deliver all my peaceful news by lunging toward someone in an ominously threatening cloud of dust.
-
They showed the Ascension ceremony in a previous episode. Osha hadn’t been marked yet because the Jedi interrupted the ceremony, and Osha was reluctant to participate in the first place.

Not as good as Galavant, but still a lot of fun. The chemistry between Jane and Guildford was lightening in a bottle.

This has been my favorite thing about the show. Both the Ahsoka and Obi-Wan series dragged out the backstories for their villains, leaving their motivations vague. It’s refreshing to have a show that gets straight to the point. I loved in the last episode when Osha found a dead Torbin first, and Yord immediately shows up behind her all, “I followed her and saw that she didn’t do it.” There’s no way Sol initiated the attack, but I’m not as sure with the other three. Torbin was guilty of something to take the poison. And the Jedi are religious zealots just as the witches were. I’m so glad they’re finally acknowledging this! Luke being “too old” at 19 to be trained was one thing, but as soon as they made 9 year old Anakin “too old” in canon, the Jedi narrative really changed. It’s nice to see them explore being “too young” to make that kind of commitment. Obviously you can leave the Order, but that has to be such an isolating experience.

S49.E20: Jake Gyllenhaal / Sabrina Carpenter
absnow54 replied to Trini's topic in Saturday Night Live
I feel like whoever scheduled this show was definitely trolling. They probably got a slight ratings boost from Swifties checking for shade. I thought the OH HIM sketch was the best of the night, and should have been in the top half of the show. This really has been an inconsistent season. At least the 50th aligns with an election year, so they’ll be bringing their A game on both fronts. I usually like the joke swap, but this year’s was too uncomfortable for my taste. The only one I liked was Che trying to start beef with Kendrick Lamar, and visibly anguishing over it. -
At least wait until they reach production, at this point.

The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (2024)
absnow54 replied to ProudMary's topic in The SAG Awards
I thought it was interesting that the Succession cast didn’t win either of the individual awards. With the male category, it was a split between Brian, Kieran, and Matthew, but then Sarah Snook didn’t win! I wonder if SAG had Succession fatigue too. I wonder if Kieran shot himself in the foot by starting his fake feud with Pedro Pascal. -
Isn’t that exactly what the Mandalorian Universe is doing? Attack of the Clones is definitely worse. Phantom Menace at least has Dual of the Fates and podracing to make up for all the cringingly bad parts.

I can’t believe the forums went down the DAY the team medal drama was “resolved.” I missed you all something fierce!

She’ll be too old to compete for Russia in 2026 anyway. 19 is ancient for a Russian female skater. Now we’ll see if the IOC follows existing precedents of disqualifying the team results and reallocating medals…

I agree. He sits out the Grand Prix and 4c, which is where skaters can gain international experience. The men’s field is too inconsistent, and Ilia can’t carry US figure skating on his own. Unless someone like Vincent Zhou comes back next season, they’ll need Jason Brown to lock in Olympic slots next year too.

Prepare to hear ad nauseam for the next 2 weeks the exact schedule Taylor Swift will have to follow to fly from Japan to Las Vegas and make it in time for the game.

This certainly complicates Ava Ziegler’s strategy for Worlds. She needed Isabeau to win Nationals to leave that second Worlds slot in question, but now Amber Glenn has a pretty good claim on it.

The 96th Academy Awards
absnow54 replied to ProudMary's topic in The Academy Awards (aka The Oscars)
This! Ken getting the recognition for Barbie, even though Barbie carried the whole movie is the most Barbie thing that could have happened. I’m surprised Cillian still has the edge after Paul picked up the Critics Choice and hasn’t missed on a major nom. If he wins, I wonder if In n Out will give him an endorsement. -
The 96th Academy Awards

I feel like at this point, the only nominations that mattered were Lily and Emma, and the other three actresses were picked from a hat. The acting races feel more predictable than usual this year. The supporting categories feel locked up, while the lead categories are down to two front runners. I didn’t even notice that Leo was snubbed, because Paul and Cillian seem like the only options. Same. I loved the whole Barbie soundtrack except for “What Was I Made For.” Billie Eilish is so talented, but this song is like nails on a chalkboard for me.
