Yeah, Reba didn't really have any "friends" it seems it just revolved around "guest of the week" or Reba ended up at odds with something or when she did try dating, they had more baggage than her. I get the point was to show how Reba thrived after having her world really fall apart and even BJ and her truly becoming actual friends. However, they writers really put it in that Reba was on an island all by herself. Then again, everyone seem to have "no friends" or anyone really. I get it would get expensive, but you can't put in how Cheyenne was with a study group or Van still got together with a few old friends just to "relax" like most guys who are young fathers? Came a point where you wanted to go: "Umm... they should have lives outside of the house."

Right that was Jill having Randy pay for Brad's mistakes and even Randy bringing up how the guy was trying to scam Brad too. Same goes into Jill's intern time that season. Was she doing that or was she just worrying about class? Was she using it for her dissertation research or was it just for experience. They could never say what Jill was doing by season 7. Being a active femist, a nag or worried about school and trying to graduate.

Right and at that point, they would be doing that. By season 5, all of a sudden the two of them magically got responsible, saved for a house and so forth? Why, they were having another baby at 23 and Van is done with education and Cheyenne is done with gen eds and ready for graduate work to be a dentist in 2 years? Then again the creators saw that they might not be going forward another season and with the timeslot/date change and the CW at the time cancelling "good shows" and bringing back shows that said they were "done" until they flashed money in front of them. Season 4 is just an odd year, I really do think they didn't know what to do with the characters at that point and then dropped stories like Brock's depression or Reba pretty much getting herself in a good situation again. When season 5 started, seemed more like they were trying to move forward with Kira back, but at the same time realizing, maybe they needed to move the characters forward.

You do have to wonder WHY regular network TV still thinks most people are home to watch WWE. you have basic cable channels and specials and streaming. I do think Fox is doing like other networks and trying to get the show ended. Also, since they are writing in Amanda Fuller's REAL LIFE pregnancy and how the actors are saying they didn't work on Kris and Ryan having another kid because the writers thought that be to hard on Fuller since she couldn't get pregnant. It be a good way to wrap up the characters and give Kris and Ryan that "new baby" since they feel Boyd doesn't want them around anymore. Plus, fill Vanessa's "I want another grand child now" problem.

Shows get really bad at this when they "force" characters to stay in a specific spot due to feeling it will ruin the feel of the show or they won't know how to write it. Shows that were notorious for that were: Full House, Rosanne, Two and a Half Men, Last Man Standing and 7th Heaven. Because God forbid they spend money to build new sets or keep the characters interacting in a realistic way with it being more natural. I do know that they said if Reba would have continued they would have had them in both houses more regularly since the set was already built for Cheyenne and Van's new house. Which would have made sense with babysitting and being so close.

How true, but also sign of the times. Now, new drivers know there are stipulations to things. We sadly had a student die a few years ago in a car accident from speeding. They changed the speed zone areas that had been a certain way for almost 20 years. Sadly it takes bad things happening to raise awareness for various problems.

Saw where Randy's gets his license and Jill jumps on him not wanting to drive at night due to Brad. Shocking how not only Randy points out what happened with Brad was all a set up, but Tim and even Mark bring up that Jill is acting ridiculous. I do think that Randy then just taking the car out was a very 16 year old thing to do. However, instead of both of them truly realizing they were both overreacting. It was more of: "This is how Jill finally realizes she make a dumb decision." Its even more how the writers acknowledge that Brad was set up by a swindler, but then just act like: "Well, we talked about it, time to move on." Nothing was every revealed that the guy was lying and that the Taylors settled everything that it was a scam. However, this would have been a great way to tell the boys how people can be greedy and it's not them they are worried about, its other people out there. Instead, it's meant to be "a very special lesson for Jill" who then goes back into: "But I'm right all the time."

One is the Loneliest Number: Unpopular GG Opinions
readster replied to mstaken's topic in Gilmore Girls
They just turned Nicole into like many said a "stumbling block" for Luke and Lorelai. It also didn't help that even in the season premiere, they had it where Luke and Nicole jumped into a quick elopement and then went: "What were we thinking." Only for her "working brothers" to harass Luke with: "You must want something out of this divorce, no one just walks away not wanting something." It was such a farce and then of course Nicole was all: "Hey, let's try it again." Such bad writing. -
The way it was played and the reaction, was so spot on it was hilarious!

See and it was suppose to be along the lines of: "See, they are sacrificing a lot for family, because family matters!" However it didn't come off like that. Tim not getting the support the first time for NASA first just makes you go "why wouldn't you?" Giving everything up for Mark and him not even having a moment about his dad gave up for him just because his ideas for things was when life sucked, shave your head, wear goth and listen to goth music and life will be great. Hell, most of the time we saw Mark, even with Ronnie, he looked pretty miserable. Yes, Wilson pointed out like the writers wanted to convey that Mark was just confused about who he was at 13, which lets face it? Who isn't? However, they way they played things up with Jill and then Mark going to "preppy" and then back to: "Oh woe is me..." looked like a teen going through depression, but... they never went there. Then when season 8 starts, guess what? Mark is wearing pretty much normal clothes and the writers were: "Well, we got stuck, so we just pretended like Mark was healed over the summer." Same goes with Brad and professional soccer. College was ALWAYS going to be there. I mean Jill went back to school in her mid-late 30s. Yet, she was acting if Brad didn't go at 18, his life would be over. Of course the theme in the late 90s was: "all kids should go to college." Now, it is: "Not everyone will go to college, but everyone deserves an education." But Randy, hey no problem!
-
It is also like watching Tim turn down NASA to help Mark get over himself. I remember when Tim even asks: "I'm going to pay for this aren't I?" When he first finds out he is going into space. Jill saying: "Yes, you are." Why would he pay? He is getting a once in a life time opportunity to go into space, an every man, represent his company, his country and Jill is basically saying that it's going to be bad when he gets home. How is that supportive? Same when Season 8 starts and Mark is completely out of his Goth Stage, Ronnie is long forgotten and the focus is Randy leaving the show. I would have liked one point for Mark to have said: "Dad, you gave up a lot for me. Thanks for caring." Oh no, he is just "fine" when the season starts because the writers wanted an excuse for Tim not to go into space and they got bored with Goth Mark.

Right and as a result, I think that's where they should have taken the character and not that "gap year" writing by the seat of their pants BS they did with Junior the past year.
-
Yeah, they really did think Ritter was going to carry the show, but they really dumped a lot of stuff that would HAVE continued to work. 3's a Crowd would have probably had a better chance of continuing on.
-
TV/Movie is very odd at times. You get the ones who are: "Money, my creations live on!" Then you get those who are: "Yeah, find, whatever."
-
Completely agree. If it's successful, well hats off to them, but I doubt it will get past the pilot similar to the Sue Heck spin off and I loved Sue.
-
I know, it seems that 3's Company atmopshere had to ALWAYS bring problems. If it wasn't what happened with Susanne Somers, it was backlash from other groups to producers doing things that were very "under handed". I see why long after the show ended why everyone was going: "You know we were just trying to do our jobs and have fun!"
-
Yeah, I'm sorry, while the creators might LOVE Dylan and Haley, most audiences... don't!
-
It's funny how Diane was so sent on intelligence driven and Rebecca was on being a success. I do think things with Robin Concord went on too long and was glad he was gone by the middle of season 9. I think also the creators of the show around season 6 realized that Carly's family was nice in small doses. Whey they ever thought the Tortellis was going to be a good spin off, I have no idea. At least when Fraiser happened, everything made sense even when they rewrote his history that his dad was really alive and a police officer. With Nick and company, I'm sorry after season 2, I wish Nick and Bargetta along with Carla's oldest would have been hit by a truck and never seen again.

It's very interesting, but Van had a very similar life to Brock growing up. Both his parents didn't really expected much of him or wanted him to do what they wanted. Similar to Brock, he went into a career his father didn't understand. Didn't really approve of Reba or her family and felt Brock walked away from him.
-
That was another thing, BJ really also couldn't really get how depressed worked. In her own words: "You have me and your baby, why would you be depressed?" She didn't get that part at all. Even in the flashbacks when we saw Brock and Reba first meeting Barbara Jean and Brock's exact words: "I pity the person who settles with her." There was such great back story on Brock that dealing with issues of his own father, his mid life crisis that erupted before the affair happened. Having depression and being officially diagnosed with it. It made COMPLETE sense, but then it was: "Well, the WB is gone, the CW is here, we are moving your show time and other show runners are leaving the network. So, we are going to dump what was working with the show and we get Kyra back so, just forget that stuff happened. I believe the cast found out the show wasn't coming back just as the final episode was being written. So, that's why it had such a moving on in the final episode, but you could tell things were rushed by the time the final photo was taken at Cheyanne and Van's new house.

I always loved the callers during the series from Ron Howard to Reba. It was always great how they did things and there was a contest in my house in who was calling.
-
That was something also, Cheyenne had so much happening to her at 17, she focused on the ones that were right in front of her. Expecting a baby, be married so young, Van's parents hating her and so forth. Why add to it and worry about BJ. Even though you did see hints of it. Yet, some time passes before she really sees the effects of it. Especially at the end of the series, when she is expecting another baby and worried about money, finishing school and screwing things up. I consider season 1 that the writers were going through with that family was. They were in different territory than a series at the time did. They were trying to balance between being funny and being serious and also trying to be that this was an adjustment. By season 3 they were really in their stride. I think the change in network ownership and so forth is what hurt the show. Though they did drop plot lines like Brock's depression or that Barbara Jean was wondering if she had more issues than she was letting on.

Yes and it was brought up to in the last season where Frankie said: "One more year and we won't have to worry about social anymore checking in on us."

Right and with Rita the excuse was; "How many news reports do you hear about a parent or parents that are like that and no one throws them in jail." Which when you look at it: "Well, they have 3 strikes and they are out." in real life. Rita was funny at first, but as it went on and the more we saw her kids it was just: "What the hell is this?" Plus, at what point wouldn't the bank of foreclosed on the house. Rita even admitted that she threw money as much as she could, but was barely avoiding losing their "crap shack". Plus, the house was in such poor shape, it would have fallen apart years ago. Sorry about Cindy and Ashley mixed up, but you see my points. It was also like how they showed that Sue couldn't keep secrets or cracked under pressure. Then have episodes where she revealed she was cheating at games to beat Axl during the Escape Room (plus that employee would have been fired). Which showed another thing, it's not the 90s anymore, people sleep or show up late for work, they get fired and very fast. They also get black balled a lot sooner and why employment is also high these days. Companies get people who don't know how to make grill cheese and then these people think they can walk away with a 45K year job when they constantly have no work ethic. Yes, it's a reflection of the time, but it is also starting to be a reality check for people as they hit 25 and then don't get why they are living in their parents' basements.

Watching the episode where Harry's son was installing their extra phone line and seeing the steam roller episode. Wow! Tim and Jill are pretty good parents compared to everyone else, and if Harry and Deloris did have "4 kids" which was constantly said but we only saw the youngest. You have to wonder how Harry and Deloris had any relationship with anyone? They seem to be supportive when they HAD to be. However, Deloris seem to constantly attack Harry for whatever reason and if one small thing went wrong, Harry was: "What the hell?" Of course Dennis leaving Tim alone with open wires for 3 hours when he seemed to be just 10 minutes away from finishing was stupid. My wife saw the steam roller episode for the first time, she thought it was COMPLETELY stupid with how the father reacted. Even the kids: "You stupid head!" Mrs. Readster was: "I be telling him, you moved your car by the roller, your dad just let you, you are both stupid heads!" Plus, she also asked why were Al and Heidi just standing there and let Tim get beat up. Plus, when Jill was closing her eyes and saying: "Please tell me your father didn't just run that kid over." Um... that kid was NO WHERE near the roller, so how could she even think that?
