I believed, really believed, that people had seen the light and that good would triumph over evil. I want to slap myself for being so stupid and naive. People wanted this, and I don't know how much is borne from a genuine belief in this grotesque hellspawn, or how much was just to spite the other side they hate so much. And I actually felt guilty, like I hadn't done enough. For the record, my husband and I both voted, and that was all we could have done, but I still felt responsible somehow. I can't remember the last time I felt so goddamn powerless, and I can't even bring myself to imagine what the future will be like.

Really, how can you go wrong with Bob Marley?

I remember when, after 9/11, MTV showed this video constantly. The song still puts me at ease all these years later.

What songs brighten your spirits? Life can be stressful, so it's nice to have songs to encourage us to keep going. "You'll Be Okay" by A Great Big World takes a certain weight off my heart.

Ginger Rogers's "Let's Face the Music and Dance" dress from Follow the Fleet has been living rent free in my head lately. It's one of those dresses that shouldn't work, but does. The fur collar is not my thing, but Rogers pulls it off well, and I love the neck to toe sparkles, form-hugging fit, and the bell sleeves (which allegedly smacked Fred Astaire in the face all the time).

Looking Dapper: Favorite Fashion From TV
Wiendish Fitch replied to RealHousewife's topic in Everything Else TV
In the movie fashion thread, we discussed how lacking the costumes were in 2005's Pride and Prejudice. I find the 1995 P&P is a bullseye where everything is concerned, and the costumes are no exception. And even though I hate the 1980 miniseries, the wardrobe department there got it right, too (Lizzy gets to wear colors! Hurray!). -

I like the 2005 P&P fine, but I completely agree that the costumes are lacking. I have some thoughts on the miniseries (both 1980 and 1995), but I'll mosey over to the TV fashion thread... -

I was a dumb, backward, gullible eighth grader who all but devoured the friggin' Redwall books when I first watched Grease, and even back then I thought, "Yeah... no, these are not teenagers. Most of these people can rent cars. I don't know who Rizzo and Jan think they're fooling, but it ain't me." -

True, but there was something so right about the Regency era of the book. I realize this is a "me" problem, but I can't take anything in the movie seriously with Greer Garson basically wearing the hat from the end of Go Dog. Go! I normally love MGM's classic gloss, but it could be misused and ruin a movie (see also: 1949's Little Women). -

Re: Tootsie "I don't take this kind of shit from friends, only LOVERS!!!!" Come the hell on, Academy, she deserved the statuette for that line alone!- 4.3k replies

Teri Garr was such a delight. She was flawlessly cast as Phoebe's birth mom on Friends, a hoot in Young Frankenstein, and I wish she had won Best Supporting Actress over Jessica Lange in Tootsie (yeah, I said it!).- 4.3k replies

I griped about the awful bonnets in 1940's Pride and Prejudice in the Fashion Don'ts thread, but here's an example of a bonnet done right: Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) in Gone with the Wind: just the right size, frames and flatters her face, cute little lacy detail, and completed with that pretty pink ribbon. A+, Walter Plunkett!!

Well, Angela Lansbury played Laurence Harvey's mom in The Manchurian Candidate despite being just 3 years older, so you never know... -

It's bad enough that 1940's Pride and Prejudice is an overly cutesy adaptation with overly frilly, period inaccurate costumes, but did they have to make poor Greer Garson wear such cartoonishly oversized bonnets? -

Dunking on Andie's prom dress will never get old! And ITA about the 1976 version of Carrie's dress. I've said it before, I'll say it again: one could absolutely wear it today and receive compliments. Light pink certainly isn't everyone's favorite color, but I think it's a color that looks good on nearly everyone.

Gross. Yes, I get that some people do have nervous smirks/giggles in stressful situations, but that many people at once? And genuine, uproarious laughter at something so awful? My god, I officially no longer care that Book Carrie burned the gym down! Have at it, sweetie!

Re: Obnoxious parking behavior I normally would never, ever, ever condone the destruction of someone else's property. Never. BUT. Whenever I see some douchebag parking sideways in a public parking lot, because they're too entitled and precious about their car to park within the lines? Visions of "Before He Cheats" or the most famous scene in Waiting to Exhale play in my mind... -
Controversial UO: I don't like Edward Scissorhands. I'm sorry, but the ending destroys it for me. I can forgive a flawed ending, but this one is just too egregious to me. Still, this movie is a beloved classic, so I own that this is a "me" problem, but I just wish the movie had ended this way... I dunno, just a thought. Note: Forgive me if I've stated this in the past, I didn't have time to check the past posts.

You know what else is irritating? If Ross had seen that as a red flag, begged Julie for forgiveness and gotten back together with her, Rachel still would have gone back into "dog in the manger" mode. It has always galled me what little sympathy the other Friends had for Julie. Julie was a sweet person who never did them wrong, but they just accepted Rachel's psycho jealousy and Ross callously dumping her. None of them felt the need to call Rachel or Ross out on this. In fact, it was rare indeed when Ross and Rachel were called out on their bullshit. I can count maybe two occurrences (Monica's "I love Ross, I hate Ross!" and Chander's "If you say [we were on a break!] one more time, I'M going to break up with you!").

Joshua Logan's inept direction sure didn't help (sorry, but that guy is my Classic Hollywood nemesis).
