Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
zxy556575 replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Here's the "what is WRONG with you?" peeve to go along with that: people who think their own mistakes and choices are someone else's fault. That particular ticket of mine was at a downtown college campus and there was no other parking available. By that time I was pretty beat down by metered street parking anyway, after dashing out of class to feed quarters for three years. But the tickets were under $20 and at least they provided a pre-addressed envelope to mail in the fee. Silver-ish lining! -
I used to do nude art studio modeling and am not an especially body conscious/modest person, but even I would balk at letting a man I just met, gay or not, help me dress. I'd feel quite awkward, not in a "he's hitting on me" way, but more "he's judging me."

Whoa. Way to put it out there, Hasan. The audience was already doing a halfhearted, bored clap when he was introduced but it went downhill from there. Hell yeah, I'd contribute to a Kickstarter fund to replace NRA lobbyist funds! The only downside is that if Hasan's fame/popularity continue to rise he may leave TDS.

I guess my Dickensian notion of parents in the UK reading a royal family picture book to their children are misguided. But I still like to imagine it: "This is Queen Elizabeth II. As you saw on the telly, she's been our monarch for longer than any other king or queen. Her husband is Prince Philip. He's not a king, which may be what confused you. Prince Charles is Queen Elizabeth's oldest child and will become king when she dies. He was married but cheated on his wife and got divorced. He later married the women he had been cheating with, who was also married at the time." Small boy, when the book is done: "Not the brightest bunch are they?"

It's bad, right? I'm not just imagining it? I enjoyed seeing Sally Struthers turn it out like the old pro she is, but don't get why the show couldn't have kept it going with the various podcast guests and incidental scrapes/escapades as usual. If Marc wanted some dramatic tension he could have done drugs and lost his sobriety without making him pathetic and homeless.

Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Words's topic in Late Night With Seth Meyers
Well ... does it go without saying that I agree with Seth's political views? I don't imagine many conservatives are giving him an enthusiastic thumbs-up. I also enjoy when Fred Armisen is there and does the bit about watching every single TV show. It's supremely silly but he and Seth have such fond rapport that it's fun to watch. And let's not forget Frisbee! -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I'm always torn about technical repairs, when the techs come to my house but can't fix the problem any more than I could. There have been two recently -- one charged by the hour and I finally told him enough was enough after 90 minutes, and the other admitted defeat. I mean ... they did make a trip and did try, but a part of me feels like I shouldn't have to pay for no results. The yelling part reminds me of a parking ticket I once got. I had a quick errand and when I came out, the meter person was finishing writing the ticket. He blanched when he saw me and started backing away with his hands up like he thought I was going to strike him, or at the very least shout. I was like, "It's fine, dude. Go with God." I knew it was a no-parking zone and took my chances. I can't imagine what that guy's work life must have been like to elicit that reaction. -
Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Words's topic in Late Night With Seth Meyers
Agreed! Sharp political commentary, top notch interview skills, and comedy bits that make me laugh more often than not. I very rarely fast forward, and when I do it's because the guest bores me. Seth is also similar to Johnny Carson in that it's sometimes funnier when a joke bombs because of his reaction. My favorite recurring sketches are Jokes Seth Can't Tell and Ya Burnt. -
The Jim Gaffigan Show - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Jim Gaffigan Show
Ringing endorsements all around! :) Gaffigan has been doing a talk show tour and I do think he's a genuinely funny guy. His episode of Comedians in Cars also made me laugh several times. I like Michael Ian Black and Adam Goldberg, so there's a lot of potential to be good. -
My lesson from Whitney is that I should be defiantly proud of not being able to bend over or wipe my own ass. A heroine for the ages!

The Real O'Neals - General Discussion

Good point. His face and size already typecast him. -
"Dr. Brock Holt, a brilliant — but secretive — head surgeon employed at the hospital, where some of the most fascinating and bizarre medical cases are under observation." Thank you for the explanation because that sentence brought me up short. Did the press release intend to say brain surgeon? If so, did they think readers are unfamiliar with the word neurosurgeon? Or is Dr. Holt's practice restricted to fascinating and bizarre mole removals from the skull?

Say Yes To The Dress - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Rhondinella's topic in Say Yes To The Dress
Remembering back to the first season, we learned that the store does put a lot of pressure on their consultants to make their sales goals or else. -
Is Hankmed even profitable? Seems like whenever there are episodes that involve the business it's because they're broke or running on a dime or Evan is trying some new scheme to keep them out of the red. I can't remember the status of the guest house and whether or not Hank's still living there for free, but it's still pretty cushy. I wouldn't be looking to move if I didn't have to. But hell, after eight years I'm still not sure what any of them do during the winter.

Ha! Perhaps. Too pale, too freckled.

TDS 3.0: Season One Talk
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
I was waiting for some kind of announcement, too. In the end, I thought the bit worked well and was pretty funny. Seth Meyers has a recurring bit where a couple of his minority writers come sit with him and tell jokes he can't, and those make me laugh as well. It really does make a difference whose mouths they're coming out of! -
The Real O'Neals - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The Real O'Neals
ABC may be overly sensitive because they took a risk on a family sitcom about a gay person and want it to be as non-threatening as possible to the general public. Won't do to have its star snottily espousing unpopular opinions in print. Salon takes up for Noah: "Hollywood doesn’t need to silence Noah Galvin. What it really needs is 1,000 more celebrities exactly like him." -
Right? The brother/sister pair were especially squeezable, with the boy telling his sister not to be scared or upset because he was there, and the exchange of I love yous. One of the younger sprogs was hugging his stuffed animal pretty damned tightly during Jurassic Park. Aw. They were also very positive that "I never looked like a fish!"

I'm not arguing your point, but some people sure seem to internalize that. I've seen three instances recently of black people on TV who mentioned their own skin tones in comparison to other blacks. One was Sinbad on @midnight who made a spontaneous joke (i.e., unrelated to anything that was being discussed on the show) that the panelists were lined up according to skin color -- a white person, him, then a darker-skinned black person. The other two comments were from people on talk shows. I need to do some reading about colorism. I just finished a memoir set in India, which also has widespread discrimination wrt to skin tones. It's all quite disturbing to me. I can't think of anything analogous in Caucasian culture. Is there? We put people down for looks, weight, speech patterns, behaviors, etc., but those prejudices also cross racial lines. I've certainly been told over the course of my life that I need to get some sun, but I don't think it works the other way. Interesting conversation, thanks.

The Jim Gaffigan Show - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Jim Gaffigan Show
Season starts on June 19th. Seems like there isn't enough traffic to warrant separate episode threads. I was kind of bored and stopped watching last season but, in a display of uncharacteristic optimism, put it back on my DVR to see if anything has improved. -
All Episodes Talk : Season 9
zxy556575 replied to zxy556575's topic in Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee [V]
And now I'm hungry for pastrami. I loved the VW bus! And of course Jerry's matching shoes. Aside from Obama, I think this is the first episode where they didn't leave the city. I got quite a few laughs so, success. The episode also worked insofar as I put Gaffigan's show back on my DVR. I like him and Michael Ian Black but initially thought the show was kind of dumb. Maybe the new season will be an improvement. -
I didn't want the kids to watch the baby elephants almost drowning! I didn't even want to see that. Too tense. Nadiya was a very popular winner on the British Bake-Off so I was a little surprised that the kids weren't feeling her. Guess they just loved the spiderweb cake a reallyreally lot. Re Jurassic Park: "If I was in the car with her I would have thrown her out to the dinosaurs. You brought this on yourself." "Not the brightest bunch are they?"

Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Words's topic in Late Night With Seth Meyers
I love how Seth (and some other hosts) have given up any pretense of presenting satirical jokes about Trump and segued directly into "this guy is an incredible, dangerous asswipe." Was it necessary for Seth to repeatedly collapse in fake laughter during the segment with Maya Rudolph? Maybe he was over-caffeinated, -
FWIW, my online guide shows both new episodes airing on the 19th, at 10 and 11pm Eastern.
