Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
zxy556575 replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
@Qoass what kind of gerrymandered neighborhood offers recycling for some residents and not others? Is it an apartment building? The recycling dumpsters in my former condo complex were a bit of a walk from my unit, but they allowed me to offload my collection whenever I wanted instead of having a specific day to put things out. @Bastet, I agree about not caring one bit if someone goes through my bins to remove aluminum or whatever. Any paperwork I care about has been shredded, and people are welcome to rifle through my old grocery lists and junk mail. I should create a peeve of the day calendar since I seem to have so many. Today I downloaded some software and gave my credit card info, as you do. I then got an email that said: Your order is currently under evaluation by Avangate anti-fraud Specialists. We perform this verification to prevent unauthorized use of the credit/debit card used in the transaction and unauthorized use of your personal details. In order to validate your payment and complete your order, please provide us with the following documents during the next two business days: - a copy of a recent credit card billing statement, confirming the name, address, and telephone number associated with the credit card presented for your order. - a copy of a photo ID (identification card, driver's license or passport) of the Credit/Debit Card account holder. Uh, no thank you! Please cancel my order. This was software with a monthly subscription fee, so too bad for them. -
I started watching for the first time last month and am currently halfway through season 4. I'm enjoying it, so it's a little disappointing to hear that the show goes downhill. Truthfully, it's kind of heading that way already, if downhill means concentrating less on cases of the week and more on complex international espionage blah blah. Some of my slight boredom may be due to binge fatigue, but I appreciate the warning about skipping season 7. I'm not really attached to either Jesse or Maddy but don't especially care to watch her die.

Right! I was already dubious because the feed was broadcast worldwide and nobody recognized the place? Granted it was mostly bare ground but there were a few identifying characteristics such as the central pole and even the absence of animal stalls, hay, equipment, etc. It was in pretty good shape for something that supposedly had been abandoned. He's horny and she's attractive. :)

This show is weirdly cagey about peoples' jobs, but if it's portrayed honestly, I'd be interested to see Heather's work schedule. A lot of domestic flights don't require layovers and flight attendants with seniority would likely win their bids for those schedules. These are a friend's current shift requirements: no workday over 13 scheduled hours, at least 9 hours between shifts, no more than 6 work days in a row and 140 total work hours a month. -

Or else Heather made some unkind on-air comments about not being attracted to him or not liking his looks (if anyone did, my money's on her), and Derek is overcompensating because his feelings were hurt. But it's still kind of a smug/douchey thing for him to do. -

So sorry, @GHScorpiosRule. Condescending and physically careless are a bad combo. I saw a dentist once who jabbed me so hard with the novocaine needles that I ended up with large bruises on my cheek. I emphasize that I saw her once. My niggling peeve is that almost nobody in my neighborhood bothers to recycle. I put out my bin on Mondays and there are maybe 3 other people on both sides of the street who have theirs out. What's the freaking problem?! We are provided with the bins, we don't have to separate any more -- just toss stuff in and you're done. Pickup is the same day as regular trash so it doesn't even require an extra trip to the damned curb. Back when we had to save, sort, and drive to recycling centers, no, I usually didn't do it either. But now it is zero trouble! -
Yeah, Laura's parking lot wienie is definitely not on the up and up. Why she was even polite to him is beyond me, much less starting to text with him. The highlight of the episode for me was Elise allowing Karl to hug her. Cracked me up.

How fun for you, @HoosierJen! That sounds like a lovely new leaf every year. If any of the nuns I had as teachers in elementary school were excited to meet their new classes, they hid it well. ;-) I actually had the same experience from the student side since one particularly odious person taught 7th grade and was then moved to 8th during my year. I had never disliked a teacher before and getting stuck with her for 2 years was a sign, I was convinced, that the universe was out to get me. Being an emotional pre-adolescent had nothing to do with it.

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

It doesn't seem common now, but I went to a high school of about 2000 and our Dean of Girls and Dean of Boys were the enforcers. Like, out in the hallways stopping kids for dress code violations and the like. They evoked Dolores Umbridge levels of horror and fear! -
Have you see Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet, on Nat Geo Wild? She treats wild animals at a couple of sanctuaries, makes large animal house calls and has a small animal practice. She has a family and one of her daughters may ride with her sometimes, but the focus isn't really on her personal life. As with all the vet programs, there are some animals that don't have a good outcome. Sad comment hidden --

Who else was yelling at Dr. Dee's vet tech to check her parka pocket for the nebulizer? We saw her put it there! The resident who brought in the pups to be taken back to Fairbanks said he thought the father was a Golden, with a joking suggestion that he maybe needed to be fixed. Well, what about spaying the guy's own dog, the mother? Maybe she was and we didn't see it, but the lackadaisical attitude some owners have about neutering their pets makes me shake my head. Like their own sexuality or macho/mothering instincts are somehow connected to their pets, which is gross to even to type. I wish Dr. Dee well establishing a no-kill shelter in Fairbanks. She's for sure a business dynamo as well as a tireless vet. The new vet at Dr. Pol's looks really familiar to me, like she was the tech on some other show? I just saw an article about a second investigation of Dr. Pol which I hadn't heard about. Some random vet in another state watched the show and took exception to treatment provided by Dr. Pol, including that he did not wear a sterile gown during surgery. He was found guilty of negligence and incompetence by Michigan Vet board, fined $500 put on probation, and required to attend continuing education courses. That ruling was later overturned on appeal, with the court stating the original sanctions were "arbitrary and capricious." "In the appeals court’s decision, the judges seem perplexed that Pol was reprimanded when the dog in question survived and its owners were happy with its care. They found that the sanctions imposed by the regulatory board were not supported by the evidence given."

Maybe it's because I've mostly seen them in sitcoms, but school guidance counselors and vice principals always seem to be ineffectual, humorless prigs. -

This totally never occurred to me until just now, but that may be why I also really liked Voyager. I enjoyed seeing how characters reacted to being out of their comfort zone with very uncertain futures. They weren't "normal" crews with preconceived allegiances and loyalties. -

I didn't find anything amusing about drunk Stephen, or exhausted Stephen bringing up/joking about how tired he was. It's his job to make it look easy. -
Thank you! That's what I was trying to articulate in my mind, beyond any liking/disliking of the characters of One and Corso. All that buildup and the backstories for ... nothing.

I could see Dutch being jealous of Pawter even if she wasn't romantically interested in Johnny. He's still her partner as a brother and she wouldn't do what she does or be who she is without him. Best friends can be resentful of someone who takes their friend away. Good to know that a blanket over the shoulders is the cure for cutting off a hand. Louella was sitting and chatting like it was a day at the beach. I suppose I could believe the frozen part had no feeling left, but it had to have been sliced off above the ice for it to stop expanding, and there wasn't even any blood.

Truly, it hurts my knees and back in sympathy when I see the bakers crouching, sitting and kneeling in front of ovens that are only a few inches above the floor.

For game meat, I don't see a whole lot of difference in taste between killing a bird or other animal with buckshot and having a dog retrieve it vs a car hitting it. I'll grant Ian the intelligence not to eat any animal he found in the road that had started to rot. Would larger roadkill animals like deer seem as gross?

She stone cold killed Corso, which I would have expected of Portia but not Two. I'm very interested in seeing how Two's emotional internal journey affects her actions. As I recall, Three and Six have only killed while being attacked or to protect themselves and others. Four ran his sword through Akita after any imminent danger to himself had passed. Five outright ordered a hit, making her a murderer by proxy. Android continues to be an intriguing gray area -- she killed but she's not "human." Would the GA would ever charge a machine with a crime?

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I know! When does this happen? I used to ride 'em all the time. Whee! Then somewhere in my thirties, my skull hardened or brain shrunk or whatever and I would get a pounding headache afterwards. Plus having zero interest in amusement park arcade games, food, entertainment, crowds, and heat any more. Mercy. So many people have been hoodwinked about the NEED FOR PROTEIN. Supplements, bars, capsules, drinks, brownies, shakes, meal replacements, and those huge 5 lb tubs of powder. The manufacturers must be making a goddamned fortune. I once worked with a stocky guy who'd been a vegetarian (not vegan) since childhood; he just always disliked the texture and taste of animal flesh. A co-worker once mentioned in passing that she thought all vegetarians were skinny. Well, okay but you do realize that every high calorie dessert, candy, starch, and junky snack food is probably vegetarian? -

My feeling is that this is a thread for offloading life's general irritations. If someone is peeved by people who drive while texting, wear open-toed sandals in restaurants, have neck tattoos, use crass swearwords, talk loudly in the movies, etc., and if I do any of those things, I gotta take my lumps. It's not surprising, or unkind, that my habits or looks may be irritating to others, just as theirs are to me. -

I genuinely don't know why this vexes me, but it's along the same lines as a cashier making small talk comments about what I'm buying. I went to the grocery store on Thursday. I don't go a lot, maybe once every 10 days or so. I don't "know" any of the staff and don't really see the same ones all that often. Thursday I bought a few things same as usual; the visit was nothing out of the ordinary. I had to go back the next day because I'd forgotten something. I was walking down an aisle -- not even checking out -- and one of the employees saw me and said, "Hi. Back again already?" I think he was the cashier who had checked me out the day before. I gave him what was probably a grim smile and said something innocuous, but what I wanted to reply was, "What the hell business is it of yours?" -
TDS 3.0: Season One Talk

I mean ... there was a camera crew there so everyone had to realize what was going on, but the Water Ice guy was playing it so straight I believed he was truly pissed! The two employees in the background weren't laughing, either. -
That was abrupt. It's not like I was longing for Corso to hang around but assumed that plot would play out over at least a couple of episodes. It was nice to see Bendavid; I guess I'm still a bit in mourning about One and the interesting ways his story could have gone -- resume his old life but provide secret assistance to the Raza, continue his revenge quest with help from the crew, maintain distance from the Raza but investigate Three's possible involvement more deeply, kill the company chairman and become a wanted fugitive again, etc. I like the idea of Android's programming being damaged and the possible consequences to her and the ship, but my overriding concern is that her personality isn't changed significantly and that, dammit, the crew doesn't need more problems. I appreciated that CI Kierkan was presented simply as a smart law enforcement officer doing his job and not some crooked nutjob. But we'll see.

Well, that was different. I didn't exactly guffaw but appreciated the effort to change things up.
