Kody Brown: The Man Who Survived a KNIFE to the KIDNEYS!
SometimesBites replied to Rhondinella's topic in Sister Wives
What, you think the mock tapioca and peanut butter Fritos are going to eat themselves? -
I understand pulling out your own wedding pictures as your anniversary nears, but only to look through and reminisce with your spouse and maybe a close friend or family member. But dumping 100 photos on social media, especially with that sleazy "never-before-seen" tagline, is like death-marching everyone you know through a slide show of your trip to the Grand Canyon. Not only is she riding Amy's coattails (or bridal train, as the case may be), but she appears sadly desperate to re-live being the fairy-tale virgin bride. With the camera crew no longer a fixture in her life, I think she's slowly waking up to the fact that all the marriage hoopla is over for her. She got her big moment in the beautiful dress, but the clock has struck midnight, the coach has turned back into a pumpkin, and the TLC Fairy Godmother is no longer singing bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. She has to wake up every day being way pregnant (even if you're happy about it, the end of pregnancy is no tiptoe through the tulips), being bumped on the regular (and I doubt a normal sex life with a virile 20 year old is quite as flower-petal-tinged romantic as she was led to believe), living in a house she considers beneath her, wanting the world to come crawling back to her doorstep to watch her give birth. Welcome to the reality of Gothard womanhood, Jessa!

Good assessment. Lisa Welchel had an actual acting career, plus she isn't tied to the type of sordid scandal that Jessa is. If you got "famous" for being in a huge, loony family and the huge loony family faceplants in public, that's a tough one to come back from. I think she'll hang on for a little while with the young female wannabes who drool all over her social media, but that will only get her so far.
-
I don't think they'll last long, unless something else comes up to keep Jessa et al in the eye of pseudo-celebrity. Right now she's clutching the disappearing caboose of her TLC exposure and a life that made her famous for being famous. Without teevee notoriety, what is she famous for? Her mom had a lot of kids? She's an uneducated, ignorant, haughty young woman with an underemployed husband and a baby? Put out a casting call with those specs, and you'd have a line for miles.

The Other Duggars: The Lost Girls and Amy
SometimesBites replied to Ljohnson1987's topic in Counting On
Agreed, esp. about Michelle being able to dress modestly without dressing in such wonky clothes. I'd argue that Deanna's outfit was more modest than that gray satin getup that Michelle wore as mother of the bride, because even with the dorky modesty panel that went up to her trachea, the bodice area was quite fitted around the bosom. So it was less modest and more ugly. Her Nurse Ratched dress for Amy's wedding was all kinds of fugly. It was ill-fitting, frumpy, had style details reminiscent of a canvas tarpaulin, and the color (besides being inappropriate--c'mon, Michelle, you know damn well it's gauche to wear white to a wedding) washed her out. To finish it off, she paired a feminine necklace with a blocky, sporty watch. Her hair just keeps looking worse and worse; even if she insists on the length, she could still do something chic: a smooth braid pinned up around her crown, a soft chignon, even a simple horsetail with a pretty comb or small flower tucked behind her ear. So many things she could do if she lost the nauseating perm and 80s bangs. She sure looked rode hard and put away wet--the stress is all over her face, smile or no. (And no, I didn't see that hideous 19 stones and counting cocktail bauble JB had made, either.) -

Snark Should Be Multiplied, Not Divided: General Show Discussion
SometimesBites replied to sweet201's topic in Sister Wives
1. Meri only had a catfishing prankster distracting her for about 5 minutes.2. Yes, Robyn is pregnant. I know it must come as a shock, seeing as how she's never had a child before and was far too invested in her bizness to want a baby.... 3. Not much news of the college kids, except Maddie has maybe changed locations. 4. No outward clues yet of the inevitable loss of the houses. I imagine heavenly father will issue an edict sometime in the fairly near future. -

Snark Should Be Multiplied, Not Divided: General Show Discussion
SometimesBites replied to sweet201's topic in Sister Wives
I dumped cable last year, so I never see the commercials for the upcoming pile of bullshit...THANK THE SWEET BABY JESUS. For most of last season I just came here to read the snark, and if something seemed weird enough I'd watch for myself. I still haven't watched the divorce episode or the last tell-nothing. Looking forward to fresh chatter with y'all, but I don't think I can watch any of it myself...they are just such lying, self-righteous, phoney, faking, assholes. This entire line of adoption crap absolutely nauseates me on behalf of those kids and their father. Even if he has been lackadaisical about seeing them, how DARE they make this a story line for television! How dare Kody wait until a camera is rolling and ask a child if she wants him to adopt her! They pretend this holier-than-thou, puritanical attitude about showing their bedroom, but parade their most appalling business around for mass consumption. Disgusting people. -
Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events
SometimesBites replied to maraleia's topic in Counting On
When I was married to my first dreadful husband, I despised going to weddings. I literally had to stifle myself from muttering under my breath and snorting with derision. Isn't that awful? You might say I was just a tiny bit jaded. But my second mister is a peach, and after 20 years together weddings can be happy and romantic again--most of the time (I guess we've all been to some weddings that we knew were disasters in the making...) -

Whoo. Sitting through a round of vows and I-do's would be awfully painful for Anna right now. Even if you didn't have everyone around you implying your culpability in your husband's cheating, there would have to be a voice inside asking why YOUR vows of love and devotion were so easy to throw over. :( -
Wonder how well they speak Spanish so far. One of the first few comments is in Spanish and is dissing Derrick's hair. *snicker

The Other Duggars: The Lost Girls and Amy
SometimesBites replied to Ljohnson1987's topic in Counting On
Honestly--and this is coming from someone who isn't all that enamored with Amy--I think she looks just beautiful. If she wants to bare some cleavage, well, you're only young once! I'd much rather see her embracing her sexuality than covering up to please the patriarch. I do believe the the huggy-squeezy pose they're in is doing a little of the pushing up, but there's no doubt she's comfortable showing skin. That's okay with me. I wish my own decolletage was still so smooth! And if she was at all swayed to pick that dress as a great big nonverbal fuck you to the rest of the Duggars, you go, Amy. -
Absolutely. I did a lot of thinking about this last night while my fella and I watched Living On One Dollar on Netflix streaming. I can't recommend this lovely little documentary more highly. Four young men travel to Guatemala and do the very best they can to live among the people who are struggling at the lower levels of poverty, while limiting themselves to the average income: about $1 per day. They come up with some fairly clever ways of trying to replicate the uncertainty of income, and instead of going in with the intention of laying their own trip on the people, they stay humble and seek to understand and to learn--and they really do come away with some understanding that will no doubt stay with them for a lifetime. The results are so moving...truly heartwarming and heartbreaking. The whole film is a lesson that Jill and Derrick need to learn. Jill is so sheltered that she can't even conceive of the blinders her life of privilege has put on her. The people of Guatemala do not want or need a sophomoric hyper-dramatic skit, for crying out loud. I mean, honestly: how dare they?

Totally agree. He's in an eternal pupa stage. I'm laughing so hard my cat is staring, like maybe she should just back out of the room. :D -

I think it unanimous. -
Oh my god, you people are on fire! Rimshots all around. I have SO found my tribe. How I love clever, intelligent, funny, and rather caustic (but only when the circumstances DEMAND it) people. And then you turn on a dime and say the kindest and most compassionate things. Effortful thinkers...my FAVORITE!

I imagine flirting on the outskirts of college life is heady, heady business for these two. Ben no doubt thinks of himself as a college man, and compared to Jessa's lifelong home schooling, getting 2 years of community college probably sounds truly impressive and exotic. -
Rewatch: Re-live the Walking Dead
SometimesBites replied to kj4ever's topic in The Walking Dead Franchise Shows
Don't know if anyone else is still marathoning--coming in late is what I get for having my nose in the 19 Kids and Counting hilarity, trying to adopt The New Zombie Spinoff That Is Not Worthy, and waiting impatiently for TWD to return. I Netflixed seasons 1-4, and I still love it, although I barely paid attention to telephone-crazy Rick and most of the Woodbury stuff. Also completely skipped the episode "Still," except to watch Daryl and Beth burn down the shack to "Up the Wolves." I fell in love with that song the first second I heard it. In fact, I've compiled a little playlist of TWD music that I keep on in the background while I'm working (I'm a writer, working on a post-apocalyptic novel. No zombies, but TWD music evokes that sense for me.) Guess I'll have to purchase season 5 to tide me over for the next five weeks. -
Spoilers and Speculation

In a fit of "WHERE IS MY DAMNED SHOW...I NEED MY TWD NOW" I came poking in here, only to see the above. Delighted and geeky happy dance ensues...adore Merritt Wever, adore my TWD. Too awsome. That is all. /geekrant. -
Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events
SometimesBites replied to maraleia's topic in Counting On
^^^THIS, THIS, THIS. Every speculation about Josh's choices being in any way motivated by Anna not measuring up to what he wanted sexually is somewhat offensive to me. I'll let the uber-fundies go down that road. I don't like Anna's religion, and I don't like Anna's holier-than-thou vibe, but she doesn't deserve to have her sexual appetites and proclivities questioned, now or ever. Josh made his choices because he's a hypocrite, a liar, and a cheat.
