  1. I disagree. IMO Sandra has a very lowkey, grounded intensity & charisma to her acting that largely goes unappreciated unless you were to try putting another actor in that position. That's important for a character like Eve, who is not the most likable of heroines. I don't think another actor could keep me invested in Eve when she's being a total fucking mess. To me, it's just that Jodie has the flashier role. I do think that Jodie deserved a nomination - I personally would have given her Evan Rachel Wood's spot - but I don't think it's a matter of her outshining/outdoing Sandra. They were both compelling but in different ways. Anyway, Jodie's tweet in support of Sandra and Phoebe was so cute:
  2. Sandra Oh has made history as the first Asian Emmy nominee for best lead actress in a drama. :) I might be slightly bitter that Killing Eve didn't get a nom for best series - not surprised that the Emmy's can't hop off GOT's dick - but I'll focus on the good here lol.
  3. To be more specific - just because this particular subset of fandom deserves a ton of shit imo - the Bughead fans were terrible to Vanessa. Obviously #notallbugheadfans, but enough so that it was definitely A Thing. Poor Vanessa. All because her character posed a threat to their ship.
  4. Yeah, the category is stacked, plus the Emmys like nominating the same people over and over again. But I'm hoping the level of critical hype for Sandra does the job. Both the Riverdale series itself plus the fandom are racist hot messes. I'm still irritated with the storyline involving the Serpents having Native American roots and now being led by white savior Jughead.
  5. Frankly, after hearing what the scene entailed, I'm GLAD they deleted that reveal. Zia indicates that she's a lesbian, but that she'd make an exception for Chris? Ew, no thanks. The last thing I want are on-screen lesbians who end up dickmatized. Because hey, we all just need to find the right man, right?
  6. I'm interested in seeing if Sandra Oh manages to snag an Emmy nom for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Killing Eve. If she does, she'll be the first ever Asian nominee in that category.
  7. I definitely liked Irina a lot more than I was expecting. The banter between her and V was hilarious. I loved that Konstantin was freaking out that V would kill her because "she's so annoying." Eve's final line "where??" did crack me up. Bih, you just stabbed her in the gut. She's probably still dragging her ass out of the apartment building. (Feel free to skip the next paragraph if you've never watched Elementary) In an earlier ep thread, I mentioned how Eve & Villanelle remind me of Joan & Moriarty on Elementary. I'm definitely not the only person to feel that way, either. But even though I shipped Joan & Moriarty - look, you don't paint a giant-ass portrait of someone unless you have a big gay crush on them, amirite? - I never actually wanted to see anything explicit happen between them because I felt like it would have ruined Joan's character... Joan has always been so together and unabashedly good. It would have made zero sense for her character to essentially go "fuck it" and hook up with Moriarty; her sense of right/wrong (not to mention her loyalty to Sherlock) was too strong. By contrast, Eve... well, she isn't evil, but there's a sort of darkness/messiness within her that Joan never had. Which is why I could actually see something happen between Eve and Villanelle down the road without ruining her character or the writing.
  8. Nah, as a lesbian, I love that "gross" lesbian attraction thing! Stabbing someone and then freaking out over it? SMH Eve, that's not how you do foreplay with someone even when that someone is a crazy assassin! Eve is such a mess, I kind of love that she's not, like, this pat likable standard heroine. ETA: My question is, do you think that Eve planned stabbing V all along, or was it a last-minute decision that she was waffling over right until she did it? At first I thought it was the latter, because it's no secret that Eve is kind of a mess when it comes to having conflicting feelings about V. But yeah, she refused to shoot V and yet a knife is much more personal/intimate than a gun. So, like, maybe Eve viscerally wanted to hurt V in a more personal manner bc she was raw over all the shit that V had put her through? ETA 2: Okay, per the cast, sounds like Eve was playing V the whole time.
  9. This is just a minor thing/observation, but I really liked that Villanelle's "was she an Asian woman with amazing hair?" line explicitly noted that Eve is, well, Asian. Something that I've noticed in a lot of "colorblind" casting is how weirdly reluctant the writers seem to be to note that the character is a particular race even when they should. It's like they think that noting that so-and-so is black/asian/etc. would somehow lessen the impact of casting colorblind? Like, oh, if you mention she's Asian, it means that you actually DO see race, which goes against colorblind philosophy. I remember it drove me nuts in a season 1 ep of Nikita (with Maggie Q) where a witness is being interviewed about what Nikita looks like and not once did he say that she was Asian even though it would have made sense. (The series did get better at this later on and explicitly acknowledged that she had Asian heritage.) I loved seeing Fiona Shaw get her drink and flirt on.
  10. In an article/interview, (I think) Sandra Oh talked about how Eve herself isn't even really sure why she got out of that car yet, or why she's behaving the way she is wrt Villanelle. So IA that Eve's, er, questionable decisions are a deliberate writing choice in line with her character and not necessarily a plot hole. She might be smart, but that doesn't necessarily make her a good spy, especially since it's obvious that there's something going on beyond mere professional dedication to her work. Heh, I can only speak for myself + my friends, but all of the other lesbian & bi girls I know are going nuts over this show, not to mention shipping Eve and Villanelle hardcore. Of course, we're self-aware enough to know that there ain't no happy ending in sight for Team Evil, but that's okay because a large part of the appeal for me is how fucked up and unhealthy and pathological they are. I consider them to be an edgier, sharper version of Joan/Moriarty from Elementary (which I also shipped). Why is femininity a bad thing when it comes to grave subject matters? I personally love how so very female/feminine this show feels through and through. I got a kick out of the fact that the (male) author was inspired to write the books because he was so sick and tired of the embittered male loner stereotype that was so pervasive to the genre.
  11. After Years Of Playing The Friend, Sandra Oh Is Finally Getting To Be The Star The fact that it took Sandra Oh this long after Grey's Anatomy to land a lead role is proof enough that Hollywood is fucked up wrt POC representation. I mean, it's Sandra Oh. And it's so telling that when she first got the script for Killing Eve, she was confused about what part she was supposed to be reading for because there weren't any stereotypical bit characters. Not gonna lie, the main reason I gave Killing Eve a shot was because it had Sandra Oh as one of the leads. Yeah, Killing Eve is an excellent show in its own right, but there are a lot of excellent shows out there; I don't think my life is suffering because I've never watched Breaking Bad (well, aside from the pilot). I only have so many hours in the day, and having a Korean WOC lead actress made Killing Eve stand out to me. I can think of, like, two or three other shows that had a Korean actress as the lead, and that's if I go back more than two decades to include Margaret Cho in All-American Girl lol. Things are better when you broaden the net to include all Asian ethnicities, which I still feel a connection to, don't get me wrong... I gave shows like Fresh Off the Boat, Nikita, Agents of Shield, and Elementary a chance because they all had Asian woc leads. But as a Korean woman I do feel a more specific affinity in seeing another Korean woman as a lead. Of course, even though I gave Killing Eve a shot because of Sandra Oh, I'm continuing to watch because it's a great show on its own. Diverse/atypical casting might work as a hook to make me give a show a chance, but after that the writing and the characters have to grab me. Nikita (sob) did that, Elementary and Fresh Off the Boat did that for the first couple of seasons but is now more hit-or-miss, and Agents of Shield...didn't. ANYWAY... I love Killing Eve. :)
  12. I am so excited for this movie, because I love the two Rachels and I love lesbians and I love religious angst. I've heard that they changed the book's ending for the movie; apparently the movie's ending is more hopeful than the book's. That's all right with me!
  13. It bothers me that they didn't get an actual kid with Treacher Collins syndrome to play the main role. Yes, I realize that Jacob Tremblay is a great little actor, so it's easy to brush off this criticism with "well, they just cast on talent and got the best actor for the role!" But, like, considering how often anyone with TCS gets the opportunity to act (i.e. next to nil), for all we know, there is some kid out there who is fucking talented but will never find out because they won't get a chance to show their stuff. Let's be real, it's not as though casting went through an exhaustive search among TCS kids only to come up fruitless; in all likelihood they decided to go with Jacob to capitalize on all his hype. This is what one kid with TCS had to say: A movie like Wonder would have been such a great opportunity for someone who wouldn't otherwise get the chance to be in a big Hollywood movie. It's a shame that they dropped the ball here. Hannah deserved to see herself truly represented on screen.
  14. Where did you hear that he was getting a minimum of 15 years? All of the reports I've read say that he copped to a plea deal of 4 to 7 years in order to avoid a 20 year sentence. That said, even 15 years is still too little. 50,000 images? Dude deserved (literal) life in prison.
  15. Good fucking riddance. Am I celebrating his suicide? Not really. (I resent that he was such a cowardly piece of shit that he killed himself to avoid facing the consequences for his behavior, I resent that he got to make that choice while victims of child pornography get no choice.) But I am unapologetically celebrating his death, idgaf. Maybe if he had been given a life sentence, I'd feel differently, but he was going to get out in only a few years anyway. It is not a net loss for the world now that Mark Salling is no longer in it. Fuck him and fuck the people bleating, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!" Miss me with this sin leveling bullshit. I've made a lot of mistakes in my life. I've lied, I cheated on a test in high school once, I lose my temper. But I've never possessed child abuse/pornography (to say nothing of 50,000 images of it with children as young as 3)! I feel perfectly fine judging and throwing stones at Mark, thank you very much.
  16. As an Asian woman, I've been on the receiving end of attention from both men & women with yellow fever before, and I hate it. It's dehumanizing because it's like they didn't see me as a person in my own right, but just like the fact that I'm Asian. This one guy in college proceeded to simultaneously hit on my roommate, friend, and me (yes, we're all Asian and no, we look nothing alike) while waxing on about how exotic~ our looks were. And then more recently there was this woman who liked me, but she was also downright obsessed with Korean culture. And she seemed to develop a full-blown crush right after she found out I'm Korean. (We only knew each other online.) Her last gf was Korean, too.... which, like, the lesbian dating pool is super small, so it felt like she was seeking us out or something lmao.
  17. From the Manny Jacinto interview: You're entitled to your wrong opinion, Manny! (I love Sung Kang and Justin Lin, too. But there were later movies with both of them lol.)
  18. Super late, but yes, cute aggression is a real documented thing that's been studied, and it's something that I've used in reference to myself before. Whenever I see my 3yo niece, I feel a lot of cute aggression, it's this weird feeling of agitation/aggression because you're overcome with positive feelings toward something cute and you just don't know what to do with yourself. When I see my niece I just want to squeeze her super tight (I don't actually do this, I give her normal hugs because I'm not insane). Or when I see cute dog videos online I feel this urge to punch something because I'm frustrated that I can't just reach through the screen and pet the FLOOFY LITTLE DOG OMG IT'S SO CUTE JUST KILL ME NOW I WANT TO SQUEEZE IT TO DEATH. It's fucking weird, man.
  19. I'm with the writer of that article, Dee. I was fully over the MCU and was just waiting for superhero movies to please please please die eventually~... but I also have moviepass, and I figured why not go if it's essentially free? And I'm glad I went because I absolutely adored Tessa as Valkyrie. Her on screen entrance had me rolling.
  20. I can see why, tbh. M/F love scenes exist in a different context to M/M & F/F love scenes. Gay/bi characters still struggle to get their relationships told in a way that isn't completely desexed (but also not weirdly fetishistic). So of course people are going to be more sensitive about a desexed same-sex love scene compared to a desexed het love scene. Note, I'm speaking generally, as I have not seen CMBYN. Anyway... last week I saw the movie Novitiate, which is about a teenage girl who joins a convent in the 1960s. As you can probably guess by the fact that I'm typing this in the LGBT thread, she ends up developing feelings for another novice. I'll copy & paste a description of the scene from this review: It's a fairly small part of the movie, which is less about Cathleen's desire for same-sex female intimacy than about her desire for intimacy in general. But it was still a pivotal moment in the story. The movie as a whole could sometimes veer towards being a bit... over the top lmao, but overall I really liked it.
  21. I'm pretty sure they did pull out a pocketknife first. But yeah, he was vandalizing their neighborhood and was obviously looking to start something. But the way Archie tells it, he was just innocent north side Archie.
  22. Yeah, I was wondering how it would play out with Marvin. Considering his age and the era - the 90s aren't ancient times, but we've really come leaps and bounds since then when it comes to empathy towards gay people - it would have been realistic for him to have a bad reaction, but I couldn't see this show really going there. I don't know how unrealistic it was for Marvin to be as fine with it as he was, but I'm happy with it*. Even in the 90s there were old farts who accepted gay folk. IA that the Huangs seem more likable because for once they weren't the focus... on the flip side, it's kinda fucked up that a show that was revolutionary for centering around an Asian-American family has to sideline said Asian-American family at this point to make them more likable. Note, I'm not blaming anyone here, since I feel the same way; it's a fault of the show's writing IMO. * Especially if he's going to turn into one of those embarrassing dads who constantly asks Nicole if so-and-so is her girlfriend and tries to set her up. Because Marvin is a supportive dad, dammit!
  23. Honestly, I'm not sure I'd enjoy this show half as much if it were less cliche/cheesy. Riverdale is such a dumb show and I love it! TBH, despite my comments in last episode's thread, I don't even actually want Jughead to die, because every cheesy teen show needs a popular character for me to flat out irrationally dislike. It's a staple! And poor Archie is just too boring to hate thoroughly.
  24. Well, yeah, of course it's unlikely; my comment was blatant wish fulfillment more than anything else. I don't actually think the show is gonna kill him off you guys, lol. I'll look on the bright side though; without Jughead I wouldn't have the iconic "I'm weird, I'm a weirdo" meme in my life. Cole has the most irritating voice ever, it sucks that he's the narrator.
  25. Oh yay, another tired "I have to hurt and push you away for your own goooooood" plot. Trashy soaps/dramas love that kind of story, don't they? LMAO. Anyway, Betty siccing the Black Hood on someone wasn't really how I wanted her to get more in touch with dark-ish Betty but I'll take it. I prefer Betty coldly~ doing what she has to do instead of being weepy. I rolled my eyes when Archie acted so indignant towards the other serpents. Dude, did you forget to mention that you pulled a fucking gun on them? You instigated all that shit, dumbass. Another point against Jughead: He clearly doesn't appreciate an adorable mutt like the Beast. >:( I'm glad to see Bughead shaken up after seeing how the fandom treated Vanessa Morgan (#notallbugheadfans); I hope she's invested in private security after that kiss lol. OK, all of my comments about this show seem (are) super negative but honestly this is one of those shows I love to hate. I love how trashy/ridiculous/stupid it is. I've seen the consensus that this isn't as good as season 1, but season 2 gave me Archie trying to start a militia, making shirtless vigilante videos that look like a scene out of gay porn, and waving a gun around while spraying red graffiti. I still cackle when I think about it. The one thing that season 1 gave me that is missing in season 2 is Dark Betty "exploring her BDSM sexuality" (tm Cheryl).
