  1. Heartfelt speech from the president of Ukraine, and...commercial πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
  2. Check out his comedy specials. They're quite extraordinary.
  3. Anybody else having a problem with the forum (not) automatically refreshing? Just me?
  4. I only deleted that finale in June, and for what turned out to be Stupid Reasons. I'm keeping the last 3 eps of BCS until the S6 Blu-ray comes out.
  5. I just realized the Emmys are on on a...Monday night?! WTF? Now that I've missed the first hour and a half 😠 Thank dog for you guys, you're how I'll catch up 😍
  6. One of those nice long profiles that Vanity Fair does is up on their website, Rachel's "first interview as she steps back from the nightly grind and revs up for her next act."
  7. Werner Herzog recommendation: Grizzly Man (or anything else, really). I'm glad those ginger mints worked for you! I was fortunate to be able to take Zofran, which is nothing short of a wonder drug. Weighing in from Houston, Texas, Beto is the real deal. What you see is what you get and there's not an insincere bone in his body. (Now that I have used up my cliche quotient for the day...) I think he can sometimes come across as too earnest for his own good, but I also think that people might finally be ready to hear his message and give it serious consideration.
  8. Not only was V rowing like a pro after the arrow wound, she then carried her pack on her left side, which is where the wound was. Rather than get mad at the continuity fairies, I just handwaved it that a lot of time had passed. Like, a LOT.
  9. I kept taking everything the women were saying in the past tense and putting it in the present tense. Because I fear that’s where we are going. I watched this on demand after stumbling across it airing live, and have a recording for it set so I can watch it again.
  10. Well, the DVR gods have helped me decide what to do going forward. Since my series recording was set for TRMS and for all practical purposes that doesn't exist anymore (except for whatever the Monday show is going to be), it's officially the end of an era πŸ˜” I'm going to try Chris Hayes this week and see how that goes. I can only take Lawrence and Stephanie Ruehle in doses of about a few minutes at a time, so that's not going to be very comprehensive if I want a day's worth of news! I will miss this thread and all of you smart and engaged posters. Expect I'll see many of you around elsewhere on the site.
  11. Very fine article from The Guardian: 11 hours to get to Breaking Bad? Better Call Saul’s impossible task
  12. I don't hate Will Smith or have any feelings about him at all, actually. But I do hate his behavior here. Assaulting someone and then twice yelling profanity in these circumstances -- and then presenting yourself as a protective family man -- is beyond the pale.
  13. Yeah, what was with the cheery song they switched to at one point? I think that was "Spirit in the Sky," by Norman Greenbaum, which technically is a song about life after death. I take your larger point, though, and would really prefer, as others have noted, some quiet instrumental music, and the images of the deceased and their contributions to the film industry filling my entire TV screen, please.
  14. Well, it is the kind of thing you can do in the tub. (β„’Miss Alli)
  15. I keep thinking Belfast might stand a chance at Best Picture because it resonates with what's going on in Ukraine...but I don't know when the voting period was, so.
  16. I'm ushering at a Ukraine/UNICEF benefit concert this coming Friday evening and am having the same conversation with myself!
  17. Encanto, that is how you do an Oscars acceptance speech! Beautifully done.
  18. I hate it that when someone is speaking or singing in a foreign language, all my subtitles have to offer is "singing foreign language."
  19. I think the first part -- calling the actors onstage -- was funny and made a valid point (and fairly subtly), but the groping went too far.
  20. I think the house writing style is for Rachel's voice, so the scripts are always going to sound like they were written for her. It then becomes a matter of which guest host can deliver them best. On tonight's show, OMG Amy Klobuchar looked like she had a glam makeover! I think all she did was change her hairstyle, but I could barely concentrate on what she was saying, she looked so different.
  21. Well, her name was Lilith. Wikipedia Although maybe we should give Stan a pass, as Frasier hadn't aired yet. 😈
  22. I deleted the series recording from my DVR, and then "Just when I thought I was out..." I wound up watching the show Friday night. I like Ali the best of the guest hosts; I think Aymon tries too hard to be casual and it doesn't suit him, and the less said about Ari Melber, the better. Rachel's "special sauce" is, I think, almost impossible to duplicate. It's a combination of deep research, dogged persistence, connect-the-dots, 25-minute-long openers, and Rachel's own personality and energy. To me all of the Good Journalism would be nothing without the personality that's gone along with it these many years. I have a lot of confidence in her staff, but I just don't know how sustainable The Rachel Maddow Show is without Rachel Maddow. I'm not saying it's a cult of personality or anything, but the reality is that we choose who we let into our homes on our TV screens, so personality is a factor.
  23. A friend who identifies as libertarian heard the news about Rachel and sent me an article from Yahoo News that Tucker Carlson has experienced a ratings surge thanks to Dems in the 25 to 54 demo, which is utterly mystifying to me. I do think Rachel's ratings are going to fall off a cliff starting next week. Is anyone here going to watch TFRMS (The Faux RM Show) long-term? I am really not sure what I am going to do. Her writers clearly have a "house style" that the guest hosts "deliver," but it always seems a bit lacking without Rachel's unique energy.
  24. Man, Dave's still got it, hasn't he? He didn't miss a beat; it's like he's never been gone. Still the master in my book -- and I adore Seth, don't get me wrong. It shows a lot of grace and humility and confidence to share the stage with the guy who first made Late Night must-see TV all those years ago. (And I love that Seth dressed up for the occasion!) Variety: David Letterman's Interview with Seth Meyers Was Late Night at Its Best I virtually attended a lecture series a couple of weeks ago hosted by a mainstream liberal seminary and one of the speakers focused on the use of comedy and humor in preaching. He played a number of clips illustrating comedy that "isn't funny" but that examines the lived experience of the performer (Gary Gulman, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro) as well as some clips showing how comedy can have serious undertones in the area of identity, and "Jokes Seth Can't Tell" featured prominently in the latter.
