I wanted to like this but they lost me when it became apparent that every person of color on the show was dating/sleeping with a white character. Then, of course, Fran's really good looking brother had to hook up with Anne. It came across as some white liberal fantasy; there were parts of it that totally rubbed me the wrong way.

Season One Talk: The Umbrella Academy
ShellsandCheese replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Umbrella Academy
I really enjoyed the series but I thought Ellen Page was the weakest link in the cast. I'm sorry but the actress playing Vanya needed a little more oomph and Page was just doing her usual emo hipster schtick. She was my least favorite character, and I was hoping by the third episode that she would just go away, lol. They had a really jacked up childhood; they had a robot for a "mom" for goodness sakes and a talking chimp as a butler. Their dad purchased them and turned Number One / Luther into a partial ape. And Vanya was all woe is me, dad always told me I was so normal and I wasn't special. Truth is Vanya was simply someone who couldn't hack it in real life. And Ellen Page was probably the worst possible actress to play the character. -
There were issues with how Dr. Don Shirley was portrayed. His family said the film wasn't true to him but then he came out that he had some sort of falling out with his family - and he cut them out of his will (don't know if that is true). Mostly, a lot of people felt it was another White Savior movie; personally, I didn't get that impression and was more disappointed that it wasn't about The actual Green Book. A lot of the outrage surrounding the movie actually left a bad taste in my mouth because of who was most vocal; think about that scene in Get Out with the work liberal whites saying they'd have voted for Obama for a third time. A lot of the criticism in particular from white people just came across as too over the top and too try hard, trying to show they are woke or down for the cause. I'm happy that both Octavia Spencer and Mahershala Ali now have two Oscars each.

Right. It wasn't my fave but I enjoyed it more than ASIB, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Vice just to name a few. I really wanted Roma or BlackKklansman to win but Green Book winning in my opinion is better than some of the other alternatives. (The film I really wanted to win wasn't even nominated so there's that).

If this is a BCoop reference, it's also the fourth time that particular movie has been made. I think ultimately that worked against him. However, everything about this awards season has been mind-boggling to me. I do not understand all of the love that Bohemian or Green Book have been getting. Both were perfectly okay movies but I wasn't blown away.

Hahahaha. Right. I watched the first episode and realized that as much as I enjoy Marie Kondo - I cannot with the show. I’m just over “reality” TV shows in general. I think this would have worked better with a three part special where Marie just demonstrated and reflected on her method. They could have dedicated like 30-45 minutes to each stage. That would have worked better than adding in these random families.

I thought I would enjoy it but I didn’t. People like this are just so ridiculous to me. The first mom has two kids, two! Not five or six, two - and she’s so overwhelmed she can’t do her own laundry? Most of these people probably need mental health therapy to get to the real root of their issues. Tidying up won’t help you in the long run when you can’t even manage to do your own dishes or laundry. Also, for the life of me, I just don’t understand people’s need to have so much stuff and junk. I don’t get it.

I've never seen people cross weakened, damaged, and cracked glass flooring so slowly. The whole time, I was like, "move"!! Also, Ezekiel really does need to pin his hair up on this missions.

Truthfully, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Unless I absolutely had to be there, I'd probably tell my partner to proceed without me, unless they didn't think they could handle it. But that's just my personality. And it has happened to me - I usually just do a quick group text with an update and go from there.

The only reason I'm cutting Molly some slack is that she didn't take credit for any work that Taureen did. She simply did the presentation by herself. All of the partners knew that it was a joint effort | venture by Molly and Taureen. I'd feel differently if she had been working with Taureen without anyone's knowledge and then boom she got in front of the partners and actually took sole credit for something they were both working on. There is a difference between the two. As for me, if I'm stuck in traffic or in another meeting and I know I have a presentation that I'm going to be late for or possibly miss; I'm letting the appropriate parties know what is going on. I know this show is fictional but my biggest takeaway was that both Taureen and Molly were sloppy; and neither would get very far in a real life corporate environment. Too messy, too petty, and not good at relationship building.

Molly sucks at office politics but I don’t think what she did was that bad either. It’s not that she didn’t give Taureen credit; all the partners knew it was a joint effort. She did the presentation by herself because Taureen had a conflict. All of the presentation could have been avoided if Taureen has let the partners know, in addition to Molly, about the conflict and the presentation could have probably been pushed back. Instead he tells only Molly and quite frankly kind of put her in a bad spot - becaise the partners are then coming to her asking where Taureen is. And that’s why every college student hates group projects. Taureen was being real petty with the aggressive Molly comments and then dropping off the case. He should man up and address the issue and move on. He could have easily pulled aside and let her know that he didn’t appreciate her doing the presentation on her own after she gave him the impression that she’d let the partners know and they’d wait to do it together - and tell her not to let it happen. He sucks at office politics too.

The Time Traveler's Wife In The Media
ShellsandCheese replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The Time Traveler's Wife
HBO shows typically don’t go to Netflix. But you can get the HBO channel through Prime - or they may eventually it stream it on Prime. I may be the only one but I don’t have high hopes with Moffatt. Sherlock went down hill real fast and rather spectacularly and DW has been uneven for ages. -
Methinks Jane might regret leaving the safety of the 38th floor. I’m also curious to know what went down with the couple and their third. I mean if you’re going to have threesomes in your town, you gotta be prepared to maybe see that person again. Other than that, I got nothing. Okay I take that back. It should be illegal for kids to purge and to kill kids; they know not what they are doing. With their brains not being fully formed and all. That bus load of kids is going to regret signing up to be violently axed to death.

LOL. It was probably McEnroe, but yeah it just doesn't happen. Moving along, I really hope that Del Potro wins tomorrow! I still don't care for Nole.

Serena told the crowd to stop booing. She gets props for that. She treated Osaka with the respect. And I’m sorry when it comes to talking to umps, I’ve seen far worse; even from St. Federer, who I admittedly love. People always try to magnify what Serena does x100. I actually don’t think what happened warranted a free game either. This is the same tournament where an umpire gave a pep talk to a male player with no consequences - and PM was not giving her a thumbs up. Both his hands and arms were moving; I thought he was mimicking an elevator.

I feel so bad for Osaka. I know a lot of it is cultural but I wish she would stop apologizing for winning!!! At least Serena told the damn crowd to stop booing. Osaka won that match, she killed it. I hope she’s able to truly celebrate it. This was the worst.

I hope not. If HBO wanted a long running series they should have created something original and not a book adaptation. Plus I’m sick of their Limited Series turning into regular series. Also Richard didn’t bring that cops. Listen to the dialogue at hospital. It was Curry. I’d imagine Richard probably turned around and went back to the house when he saw them approaching. He flat out told Camille Vickery wouldn’t have listened to him but Curry wouldn’t take no for an answer or something.

Hated it. The way the ending and big reveal were handled, sucked. Ugh.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
ShellsandCheese replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Sharp Objects [V]
Yeah. I don't see how the last episode could possibly stay true to the book. There's no time, unless it's going to be a two hour eppy. I agree that more than likely, Adora will be exposed but Amma will be fingered for the murder of two girls and they'll skip the Amma moves to Chicago....er St. Louis with Camille stuff. There was a lot of focus on the dollhouse this week, a lot. I would imagine that we'll finally see what's really going on with the dollhouse next week. I'd be okay with changes that skip Amma moving but I really hope they don't change the ultimate ending. -
My previous post was deleted. To sum it up, this episode left me exhausted. It's pretty clear that everyone in the town (at least the adults) knows that Adora killed Marian. Alan knows. Jackie knows. Chief Vickery knows. They all know. Reminds me of that quote about the only thing required for evil to triumph is for "good people" to do nothing. The director made it a point to linger on Alan watching Adora go up the stairs with her tray of bottles and then showed Alan having a memory of him with Amma. He knows. He has always known. Also think back to his word choice when he confronted Adora about having lost a child too and how well he bore that. He knows.

It’s not unusual for a small town with hardly any people of color. I’m guessing back when Camille was in high school there was probably just a couple of black families; modern day, I bet there are hispanics. But we don’t know if they even live in Wind Gap, it’s very common for people to work in one small town because that is where the jobs are and live in the next small town over. I see it all the time in small towns in my own state. Also I don’t think either Gayla or Becky fall into the magical negro trope. I think their portrayal is absolutely spot on for a small southern town like Wind Gap. Hate to sound mean but they would be non entities to the whites around them; especially those members of the ruling class for that town. As the maid, cook, etc Gayla wouldn’t be be chatting with Adora like they are old friends. She’s domestic help; she does her job, is cordial and respectful, and goes home. She’s no doubt very empathetic to Adora’s girls but there’s not much more to it. I’m not even trying to make sense of Camille’s hair and the timeline. Wasn’t it long when she went into moms room to touch the camera, then short before her sister died, and then long again......
