TDS 3.0: Season One Talk
Ottis replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
Glad you got that out of your system. It isn't the only article online that questions Noah's beliefs, however, particularly on atheism. Here's another, based on the same tweets. http://thehumanist.com/arts_entertainment/culture/hey-trevor-noah-we-dont-all-need-a-god And a Noah Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialTrevorNoah/posts/10150463885157453 There are also a bunch of articles about his tweets about Jews, which is a slightly different topic but could support a belief that Noah views the world through a Christian belief system. Which, getting back to my original post, may be why his interview with Dawkins seemed to be that way. -
Way too cutesy for me. Between the "Okay, thens" and the way the couple dealt with the dead body, and all the low-key, Fargo responses, it kept taking me out of the show. I liked the unique delivery from season one. Season 2 sounds almost like an SNL skit. Too much.

OK, so I'll say it: Did Tracy used to lock on to the cue cards/teleprompter and read all his lines? Because he was doing it so much in this show, it was distracting. Also, his open, when I guess he acted like he was affected by his accident and then joked how he wasn't, was weird because I didn't see/hear a big difference from how he acted and then how he kept going. That is all said within the context that his recovery, and then hosting the show, was amazing. He was best when things started to go wrong, like the camel. And there was a deft bit there where he started a line early, and then did it three times total as part of the joke. Not sure if that was planned, or he screwed it up and then covered magnificently. On a show as liberal PC as SNL, that last line in the singing kingdom skit was just bizarre. It went against everything SNL speaks to. How in the world did it get approved and used? A closing joke about how two gay men are weird? Ugh.

Creepy episode. No boys that age want to take dance advice from a dad. One of the kids at the dance reeling in ... the principal (who then looked disappointed when he was pushed back - ew). Louis telling his workers something big was coming and then never giving the news ... twice? Jessica knowing nothing about her MIlL's boyfriend when even the neighbor knew - and still wanting money? Every time I started to get into the ep, something would happen that took the exact wrong turn for me..

I FF'd through a lot of that episode, mostly the creeping around and the obvious fighting/stabbiness. Because ... other than proving Rick's point, why? Now we have yet another group who wants to kill humans for their own twisted reasons. Great. What's worse, we still have hundreds of walkers coming. So this show is treading water for a while. Don't get me wrong. TWD is done well, and this ep had great moments (including the first surprise attack). But I feel like we've seen this all before.

Most everything in that interview was meant as a joke. But the audience started to applaud when Trevor asked that, because there was meaning to his comment to Dawkins, which I suspect has to do with Trevor's own beliefs. You can't ask someone who is obviously against something how they are enjoying the benefits of that something without giving the joke additional meaning. It would be like asking a Republican elected official how he/she enjoyed unemployment benefits they used before becoming a politician. Implicit in that joke is the denial of the subject's position. Actually, just did a quick Google search and it turns out I'm right: http://thedailybanter.com/2015/03/trevor-noahs-atheist-problem/ -

That's where I am landing as well. Trevor also asks strange questions, vs. getting to something interesting. His interview of Richard Dawkins was a real head scratcher. I have to assume Trevor is religious, given his crack about "god-given talent" (he is a scientist, Trevor, a man who learns for a living, not an athlete), and his insistence on how Dawkins is a "man of science." Then the weird left turn about Dawkins' daughter and the ties his wife makes. More often than not, I find Trevor's interviews very lightweight, even more so those of JS's. -
You're not alone. The entire thing felt like one big "been there, done that" episode. Laughed once. I think.

Us, too, and it is all due to less Lizzie. Oh, she's there. But she doesn't talk much and she doesn't drive much of what is happening. She just runs. The few bits where she does drive something continue to drag the show down ("I look like my mother, don't I?") or make no sense (beating down the abusive guy in the diner who simply went for Lizzie's gun). The rest of the show is pretty good so far, including the Dembe plot (which I kept expecting to intersect with Red directly). Maybe they realize the less Liz drives anything, the better the show is. Make her a passenger.

I was just there a couple of months ago for a week, staying in Old Town. I have no idea where a quarry could be that is close to Alexandria, but then I was on the Potomac River side of it. Maybe on the far west end? I would love to know where in Alexandria they are supposed to be. The roads on the map seem to be in a sparsely populated area, so sparse i thought they were still in Georgia for half the episode before remembering. I didn't get the impression that Alexandria has any spaces like that. Loudoun County, maybe.

Why not? If this show were on once a week like most shows, then five or six episodes is plenty of time to decide whether or not you like a show. I don't see why it needs to get a pass because it's on every night. Mind you, I don't dislike Trevor, or the show. My main take-away with Trevor is that virtually anyone could do this show so long as they have the same writers and the same format. It's like, he's just there, it could be anyone doing this job and it would have essentially the same impact. I don't need a month or a year to decide whether or not I like someone. I don't think Trevor needs to "get better," he'll still be Trevor. I think they should have picked someone stronger for this. YMMV. But keep in mind this is not a scripted show, with every show written around a theme months in advance. This is a host finding his voice and style, and that takes time. Some people didn't like Jon Stewart after a week or two. Things change. So far since Trevor took over, there have been some awesome segments, and some duds. His international perspective has potential, if they can capitalize on it like they did when he compared Trump to an African dictator. Which way will they go? I'll give them a month. As an aside, the show - both with JS and now with Trevor - needs to find another way to talk about racial issues, gun issues, etc. than with reports and skits that basically say, "Can you believe how stupid other people are who believe this is OK?" It's beyond well worn. -
Here is what I hate about the end of this episode; Now we are almost certainly going to have to endure at least one episode (please, not more) of all the people in the same place fending off zombie attacks. It will be kind of like season one again. And I have no interest in reliving season one. Let's move forward. You know how I identify with Rick? Not as a ZA survivor, but as an office worker who finally has a good enough reason to dispense with the nicey nicey "teamwork" stuff with people who are idiots or get in the way. The man has had enough. And he doesn't care who knows it. I get it. The problem is, that's one thing in an office, it's another when it is in a ZA world. There is a fine line between wanting the best for everyone through tough love, and being a dictator. I don't know what the show is trying to prove to us through Rick's behavior. It appears that Rick's rationale is correct at its core but he has taken it to a highly questionable level. Does it continue, or does he reach a different understanding?

S02.E03: Shaquille O'Neal's Motors
Ottis replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Fresh Off The Boat [V]
That was brilliant. Just a well done joke within a joke. If you knew who Shaq was, the reason for the damaged doorway should have been obvious as soon as they showed the door the first time. I wonder how many times Shaq had to tape that shot. It looked like he really sold it. -
S02.E05: We Can Do Better Than This
Ottis replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in You're The Worst [V]
I don't think 11yo boys writing erotic tales is unusual. What was unusual was his Canterbury Tales style at age 11. That was just odd. Is he actually good at anything? His one book doesn't seem to sell. He struggles with recaps and whatever that NCIS thing was. And while the show seemed to think his erotic tales were good, the short bit we heard was not good. I don't know what exactly Jimmy can do well. This is becoming a central point for me. You see flashes of Gretchen doing her job. I don't know what Jimmy does. -
AS monologue and Weekend Update were best parts of the ep. Almost every skit felt like it had a premise, and nothing else. Interesting opening and then nowhere to go. The airplane and the baby shower skits were especially that way. Maybe the writers had a short week or something. The hands-free selfie stick skit was a great idea that was spoiled by weird execution: The selfie's taken by the selfie sticks often included the camera taking the pic, in the pic. The gun bit wasn't very funny but it was very political, and I liked that SNL went there. Or rather, returned there after a long absence.

I've always thought that Henry knows more about why his wife was killed and is hiding something significant from Barry. No way a guy just gives up and goes to prison so quietly for allegedly killing a wife he loves. Throughout the series, Henry has come across almost as someone resignedly waiting for something. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned into a bad guy. I posted this a few eps into season one: Iris can't work as a romantic interest. Barry grew up with her as his sister, basically. the show tried to make something out of it, but it just makes no sense. You don't grow up with a person of the opposite sex as your adopted sister and then fall in love with them and want to be romantic. I don't mean it in an incest sort of way. I eman it in a relationship dynamic sort of way. And it seemed to be true from the beginning of the series, which is why I kept posting that it made no sense to have barry moon (lust/9 after iris. So this turn of events I welcome.

S01.E09: Constant Horror and Bone-Deep Dissatisfaction
Ottis replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in You're The Worst [V]
They better reveal that Paul has a horrible side, because otherwise he is getting screwed in that relationship, and not in a good way. I get that he may not be everyone's cup of tea, but nothing wrong with a nice, nerdy guy (or girl). if the show sees him as being a loser just because of what we saw, that's wrong. -

Is there a difference? I don't like his movies or his humor, didn't watch the interview. Guess I didn't miss anything. A week plus a few days isn't nearly enough time to decide whether Trevor's TDS is good. I'll give him at least a month to sort out who he is. -
Second ep in a row for me where I had trouble finishing and didn't care about the characters. I had to sit down four times to finish this episode. Still like the production values overall, and I *think* I like the central philosophical point around whether a crime not yet committed is a crime, but the show wanders around too much for me to maintain interest. Don't care about Vega's boss, and the three precogs should be fascinating but they aren't. vega and the one precog are OK, but really, what he is doing is kind of nuts, given he has no training or skills beyond his murder flashes (and he is doomed to a lifetime of those, so does he really plan to keep this up?). The show needs a plot line that makes me care about someone and give them the possibility of a better future.

Cold Open: So-so. Kind of over Trump. Monologue: FF'd through most of the talking. Agree that Bobby going from Jared to Josh Duggar was amazing. Wish they would have slammed kentucky clerk way harder, or at least slammed the people who support her. Abilify: OK. Homecoming Dance: Skipped a lot of it. Hillary: Hillary was better than I expected. Liked that Kate challenged her a bit on recognizing gay rights. Just the fact that HRC went on SNL, even though she was among friends, is a good thing, IMO. Weekend Update: I FF'd through every character bit they bring out, in this and other episodes. Can't they simply mock the news? The Millenials: Had great promise, but was so shallow. Yes, everyone knows Millenials are entitled and phone-obsessed. Can we dig a bit more, please? I badly wanted to share this one at work, but in the end it was so lightweight and cliched that I can't. Katz's Delicatessen: NY joke, don't care. And it was way too long. If that happened in a restaurant near here, someone would have called the police. The Squad: It felt authentic and well done, but I don't care about Taylor Swift or her squad. I don't remember the rest of the show. FF'd through most of it. I liked that SNL was getting a little more cutting edge with political commentary. I saw enough Miley at the MTV awards or whatever she hosted recently.

I knew this show had gotten to me when they cut to the girl playing the Dr. Dre melody on her flute, and then to Eddie being dumbstruck, and my eyes almost teared up! Finally, he found someone who might get him. My kids were only mildly surprised when I started rapping to the flute player with the Snoop lines and then the actual song cut in and Snoop came on. Thank god I remembered the first two lines correctly.

Could someone please explain what that phone is? I am simultaneously watching seasons 1 and 2 (it really isn't that awkward) but I don't know why her getting up, getting a (second?) phone out of a drawer and leaving is so terrible?
-
I haven't watched any episodes, and just read this season finale to see how it ended. And ... I still don't get why this show exists, or why people are watching it. All the plot points were variations of what we already saw on TWD, right down to the "I will turn, shot me now" and all the "how various people react when confronted with the end of civilization as they know it" stories. Unless you are a ZA fanatic (and granted, there are some ZA fanatics), what is the appeal of seeing it happen again, but to different people?

So did Taco do something to Andre's implant stash that caused Frank "The Body's" girlfriend to actually have lopsided breasts? Couldn't quite follow that.
