  1. Perhaps not the BEST moment, but hands down, the most shocking moment of the show was when Maddy was killed. Just the shocking suddeness of the moment, coupled with the violation of it being a family member, and the brutality of it all. I was shocked that they got away with that on TV in that era! I mean he rammed her face into the mirror, FFS!
  2. I get that DS9 wanted to engage (Heh) the "TNG" fans right off the bat.. But having PIcard on really added minimally to the plot, other than to say "SIsko is a NEW kind of Commander"; I mean yes, there was some tension between he and SIsko, but it wasn't like they were ever about to truly breaks ranks and come to blows. Yes, they really introduced the "THis is a job, not a family" concept quite early int he series. Which brilliantly counterpoints the Jake/Sisko dynamic.(Though I do think Jake is one of the weaker players not only in the pilot, but the entire series.) Intersting to see how that characters started: I think they established the base of Sisko's character pretty well int the pilot, but the only character who seemed really "fully-formed" right off the bat was Quark; seems like Armin Shimmerman really grokked onto Quark's role pretty quickly and seamlessly. Agreed. But, more than just the TNG connection, O'Brien is realyl the "Everyman"; he's the character that we, the viewers, can empathize with immediately. He's familiar from TNG, he's got a realistic life (Wife, kid, etc.), and has recognizably human flaws (short-temper, a bit racist [certainly about Cardassians].
  3. Really? They're cribbing from Dawson's Creek now>? UGH, this show.
  4. And of course, who can forget the "Sexy Lingerie" episode, where the girls form a rock group?
  5. UGH. This show! Samcedes? Just stop. I really don't care about these two, particularly together. (Though I do appreciate Mercedes trying to stick to her personal and religous convictions.) Yes, this episode shows Blaine in a negative light, and I was OK with that. And give Darren Criss kudos for trying to make it believable. And to Chris Colfer for portraying the arc his character is going on, where the balance of power has shifted from Blaine to Kurt. Poor Artie. I'd rather he get no lines (like in the last 4 seasons), than have him be the one to get the STD/Creeper storyline. That said, I still do kinda miss the newbies (Well, most of them, anyway. And particualarly Blake Jenners shoulders....)
  6. Welcome, one and all! :) I'm ecstatic that we're getting some interest in this; I hope we get a mix of viewers new and old, as I always enjoy seeing fresh perspectives on DS9! Looking forward to lots of stimulating conversation.
  7. Totally agree, Jediknight. Jonathan was the one had an actual compelling arc, not Warren or Andrew, and Danny STrong really portrayed that extremely well. (S4's "Superstar" was one of my favroite episodes of the whole season- and I love the way that Jane Espenson and Danny Strong seemed to have such great chemistry and friendship behind the scenes.) Though I love Tom Lenk to this day, Andrew remains my least favorite character of the entire series. But for Season 6 overall? Marti Noxon effectively brought this show to it's knees for almost the entire season,
  8. Seemed the most logical to me, but I'm open to group-concensus!
  9. UGH, this show. Yes, I remember hate, hate, HATING that whole shtick. But I"ll post about that when I get around to it in the rewatch.(MAybe my opinion will have softened, though I tend to doubt it.)
  10. Seems like there is enough interest to begin an (unofficial) rewatch of DS9 from beginning to end. All are welcome to join in; I'm hoping this topic will get some lively discussion amongst fans old AND new! I opened this thread to discuss the logistics of the rewatch (Episode Order, "Due Dates", questions, etc.) The complete series is available in a number of formats, including online streaming/purchase (via Netflix, Amazon, etc.), or should be readily available on DVD as well. For Season 1, the Episodes are: 101-102: "Emissary" (DUE 04-25-14) 103 "Past Prologue" (DUE 04-25-14) 104 "A Man Alone" (DUE 05-02-14) 105 "Babel" (DUE 05-02-14) 106 "Captive Pursuit" (DUE 05-09-14) 107 "Q-Less" (DUE 05-09-14) 108 "Dax" (DUE 05-16-14) 109 "The Passenger" (DUE 05-16-14) 110 "Move Along Home" (DUE 05-23-14) 111 "The Nagus" (DUE 05-23-14) 112 "Vortex" (DUE 05-30-14) 113 "Battle Lines" (DUE 05-30-14) 114 "The Storyteller" (DUE 06-06-14) 115 "Progress" (DUE 06-06-14) 116 "If Wishes Were Horses" (DUE 06-13-14) 117 "The Forsaken" (DUE 06-13-14) 118 "Dramatis Personae" (DUE 06-20-14) 119 Duet (DUE 06-20-14) 120 "In the Hands of the Prophets" Tentatively, we're aiming for 2 episodes a week. To try to gather more people for this, we'll give until 04-25-14 for people to watch "The Emissary" and "Past Prologue". People can open individual threads for each episode as they finish them; in keeping with the spirit of the forums here, it makes sense to be able to refence current/previous events for each episode, but let's try to avoid spoilers (as I'm hoping we can even get some new converts onboard for this rewatch!!)
  11. Is that the "Cross-Dressing Quark" episode? Ok, then I stand corrected. But "Move Along Home" is still egregiously bad. The Wadi (Which we NEVER see again!) as a race were pretty terrible, there was never any genuine suspense or feeling of "intent to harm", most of the main character were still in the process of being fleshed out and thus were pretty shrill and disgreeable, and the scene at the end seemed to take FOREVER. (And the rocks were CLEARLY styrofoam; IIRC, Dax gets hit by one, and can't even PRETEND to be stunned [though that may be Terry Farrel's acting more than the special effects.) And Bashir plummets to his "Death", and there's not even a LINE about how surprised everyone is about how he just re-appears after the "game" is over. But Avery Brooks trying to sing the stupid hopscotch rhyme was worth the price of admission for the episode all by itself!! Also, the episdoe where Julian gets possessed was pretty terrible, too. (Siddig El Faddil seems to think that "whispering= menacing" most of the time in the episode.) Andt hey totally gave away the "Surprise" in the episoe; when the "Mysterious Assailant" pushes the Klingon off the 2nd floor of the bar, you can TOTALLY see that it is Bashir, and this is SCENES before the big reveal!! I'm glad to get some discussion going! Lets think about a schedule for the rewatch; how about (starting from the beginning) if we ask people to watch the Pilot & 1st episode ("The Emissary" and Past Prologue.") by the end of next week (04-18-14)? Or ist hat too soon, and we should give 2 weeks so we can get more people participating? Then we can open threads for the individual episodes for discussion and thoughts. (In keeping with the theme of this new site, I think [as Chip suggested], that referring to previous events/episodes is OK, but we'll try to keep "Spoiler" free in the discussion threads. (I'd like this rewatch to be a great "jumping-on" point for new fans, as DS9 is still the most watchable AND relevant (IMO) of the Trek series.)
  12. Utterly agree with this, having seen him live a number of times.
  13. You're using the word "Career" loosely, I assume? IIRC, Just four episodes ago (before her now-recurring status role, she was selling CD"s out of the back of her car before somone supposedly "discovered" her. Thank you! A) We've never seen these "close friends" of Mercedes before, so their dissent carries NO weight in my mind. (That, and their comments are beyond stupid!) B) Schue is rolling over in his grave! He spent THREE SEASONS trying to teach these people to have values and morals, and about the importantce of diversity. Now that they're in the "Real World" (HA), they just completely disregard the values that they've made their own? But ESPECIALLY Mercedes, who never really gave a shot what anyone thought of her in the past (which is part of what I liked about her.)
  14. Thanks for the title edit, Chip! Rather than doing individual episode threads, would it make more sense to do a "Great DS9 Rewatch thread"? And should we think about about setting up a schedule? Is two episodes a week do-able for most people?
  15. I love that Morn, who never gets a single line, gets a forum thread before almost anyone else. Priceless! (And thanks. Actionmage)! For some reason, the scene in "Who Mourns for Morn", where Morn simply vomits up the liquid latinum never fails to make me laugh. (Guess that says something about me....)
  16. Apparently, the line-up for the Boston Creation Trek Con is pretty stellar this year. AND they have Avery Brooks scheduled. I hear he's a BLAST to hear/see in person, in a "Head-Shaking/WTF" kind of way, apparently. Which fits my percpetions of him based on the interviews I've read through the years. (Is anyone else planning on going, out of curiosity?) Yes, both "Far Beyond the Stars" and "In the Pale Moonlight" are two of the best episodes of the entire series. (I also like "The Vistor", but that's more of a Jake episode than a Sisko episode, though it really is more about the bond between father/son.) Yes, I can't say enough about "Far Beyond the Stars". It really is great, as it handles a sensitive topic poignantly, without resorting to the normal Trek heavy-handedness. And having the characters play their "Alter-Egos" really serves to throw the viewer off just enough without alientating them.
  17. Yes, there were alot of head-shaking moments in Season 1. Like the Tosk episode. And any early Jadzia-centric episodes. Just terrible. But, the good certainly outweighs the bad, even in Season 1.
  18. My 2 favorite episodes are both "Dream-Sequences". (And I think sev captured them both!) The first one is later in the series, when Natalie gets stranded at a diner, and envisions a murder-mystery taking place all around her, where Blair is a jilted heiress, Tootie is a crop-duster pilot, and Jo is a kind-hearted waitress. (The image of Blair slinking around the diner with a gun in her hand never fails to make me smile.) The other was an mid-series episode where the gang ends up getting killed-off one by one. (And Blair again gets the line of the show when she pops out of a closet with her hair all teased-up and shrieks "Dippty-Doo'ed"!" Her delivery of that line was priceless.
  19. Wow. Another underwhelming episode. I can't even begin to describe my disdain. I almost miss the LIma kids. (Well, I miss Blake Jenner and his shoulders, at least.) UGH. Could they throw Samcedes at us any harder? Who throws a fur (even a fake) into the East River? And they had one throwaway line when Sam dumps change in the river, but Mercedes can throw a damn coat in? And seriously, these two been reunited for ONE EPISODE; if there's that much drama already, that's doesn't bode well for a healthy relationship. And Mercedes reasoning for "breaking up" with Sam was spurious at best. (And what was with the unsubtle TIna diss? "We had blacks, gays, and Tina.") Wasn't Sam just MAKING OUT WITH HER three episode ago?!?! UGH, this show. She could have done the assignment as requested? THAT is what Mme. Tibidoux is trying to teach her. Discipline, education, and humility will take you a long way in life (and presumably on Broadway), Also, she could have listened to HER BOSS on the production, rather than trying to wheedle special treamtment out of him at every turn. (And the bit about her "changing the lines" to Funny Girl is completely out of line.) Rachel is incredibly insufferable and entitled. I know that's supposed to be part of the charm of the character, and all credit to Lea Michelle for owning it, but can't Rachel ever learn anything? Ever? The whole "Gay-Bashing" thing could jsut as well have been omitted, for all the attention and effort they focused on it. And what was up with the weird directing choice of just showing the eyes/part of the face when they got the call about Kurt being in the hospital? Very offputting, IMO. I like Darren's little "No-one's going to hurt you" bit. Very endearing. But it's been awhile now, I'm not really seeing the chemistry between CC and DC anymore. (I try to avoid the "Behind the Scenes" dish/fandom battles as much as possible, but the cracks are starting to show on the screen, I think. I'm actually starting to enjoy the Blam scenes more. (I did chuckle at the "Star Wars fan-fiction" gags.) And poor Artie continues to get the short-end of the stick, even in NY; I hope they're paying Kevin Mchale handsomely to endure this.
  20. Actually, I found that both Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon have really upped their game in the last season or 2 (I actually was kinda hoping for a "Girlfriends Talk Show" sketch!!) And Aidy was wonderful as Ursula in the "Little Mermaid" sketch. Loved the dress, and the hair, and her vocal inflections and facial expressions were spot-on!!
  21. The same can be said of MANY characters, which is part of what I liked about Season 1.; totally setting the stage for later events/storylines. Gul Dukat, Kai Winn, and Garak all show up in small doses in Season 1! (Even Vedek Boring [errr.. Bariel]) shows late in Season 1, if I recall correctly!!) IMO, Kai (or Vedek, at this point) Winn to this day remains one of THE BEST "Love to Hate Them" characters on any incarnation of Trek. What Louise Fletcher did with that character is utterly sublime and masterful.
  22. I think they're still finding their footing and chemsitry. But (much as I like Ceciy Strong) having 2 anchors is definitely an improvement. I thought this show was relatively solid overall; no home-run sketches, but nothing that truly flopped, either. And Anna really gave her all to each sketch. (And I agree "Dongs all over the world" was WAY more catchy than it had any right to be.)
  23. Not that I know of! (I accidentally had "Caps Lock" on, and I couldn't edit the title afterwards. Feel free to normalize the casing, if you like!!) Yes, Duet is (arguably) the best hour of the first season. And "Move Along Home" is arguably the worst hour of the entire series. (Though the episode where people dreams come to life is also pretty terrible.) I was disappointed that the "Circle" storyline didn't have a bigger payoff, but I'll talk about that when I start my S2 rewatch later. It's also interesting that the Rom we see in the early episodes of S1 is a COMPLETELY different version of the lovable Rom we see in later seasons.
  24. Avery Brooks certainly brought a lot of gravitas to the role, for sure. And I really like the chemisty between him and Jake; it's not very often you see such a profound father/son bond depicted on television, let alone on a Sci-Fi/Star Trek series!!
  25. With apologies to the TWOP forums for stealing the brilliant subheader. :) I've just turned my friend on to DeepSpace Nine, so I've been doing a rewatch with him from the beginning. It's funny how many threads they began paving right in the first season that pay off WAY down the line. (The whole Changeling/Founders arc really begins right in the pilot, and slowly gather steam over the seasons.) And while I cringe knowing what's coming (Run Along Home, anyone?), it's actually more enjoyable to watch with a DS9 newbie, who doesn't know what's coming, and what episodes are great and what episodes bite the big one. It's also interesting how, in my memory, I remember Kai Opaka playing a MUCH bigger role than she actually did. (She was only in 2-3 Episodes, I believe?) It's also neat to see who had their characters pegged right from the pilot ownward (Quark), and who had to grow into their roles over the seasons. Knowing what's coming, it does feel weird to watch the show and NOT think/hear about the Dominion and the Jem'Hadar! (And since my friend doesn't know abut that whole storyline, I'm doing my best not to spoil him,) Anyone interested in doing a series rewatch? (If we get enough interest, we may even be able to set up a calendar and spin it into a seperate discussion thread.
