I do have acquaintances where two step siblings married each other, after their parents met and married when they'd both moved out of the house and were job having, house owning adults with one having had a failed marriage, but still it raises eye brows when people find out. I don't like the way it was written but I don't find two 16 year olds who just met and connected being romantically attracted at all creepy. It's insanely complicated, legally and emotionally as this show has pointed out, and I don't ship them in any way, but the attraction itself is pretty normal. It's more normal to me than them having an insta sibling bond because of their age and Callie's experiences.

This family has always spent money they didn't have, and they've managed to send several kids to college at the same time (some to cheaper schools than others to be sure). Meri will be living at home, possibly only doing part time (she has to do the show after all) and only be paying in state tuition fees. She's not raiding Truely's college fund to do it. She's most liking paying out of "her money" and the kids wouldn't be getting it anyway. I think its much healthier for her to be doing something productive with her time than sitting mopping about Mariah or scrap booking or being forced into a babysitter role (you know that Robyn would simply use her as a baby sitter) that she doesn't want. IF they actually were really sister wives things might be different, but I can't imagine the others would feel too happy with her over at their houses "helping" with their kids at this point either. Especially as almost all of them are now school age.

I think Mrs Quinn is still a way from that yet. She's just had her perfect world smashed, she's becoming more accepting but I don't see her happily side step parenting Jude in the way Stef or Lena may or may not reach out to a Quinn figure or brunching with the extended family yet. I don't know, its possible this is set up for Braillie, but I still think its going to blow up mightily on everyone before that happens, especially with Sophia who clearly doesn't (again may its just "yet") actually want to join the Foster-Adamses as much as she's all about Callie and maybe custody battles. Depending on the next few episodes I can see Robert walking away (maybe just temporarily) from Callie for her sake and maybe Sophia's rather than eventually see scenes of him and Mike bonding over being Dads. Well what we're seeing here is very recent, they were pretty much a broken home family albeit one that never acknowledged that. Mike fell into a bottle for 10 years and left 90% of the parenting to Stef and Lena. I think if Stef had left Mike for another man we'd be seeing a lot more hostility from Mike. Although this episode shows they still have unresolved issues from their marriage, Stef's revelations and break up and issues with the new SOs, I think it helps that Stef created a different life for herself rather than theoretically moving in with another male cop in terms of blended family. I think in a lot of ways it fits in with their theme of family. Yeah teens that aren't bio related sudden thrust into a kinda intense situation (emgency foster care) might become romantically attached. It's not necessarily good for all the reasons that already played out on the show and what Callie said in 1A when Brandon didn't want to back off mooning over her, but I don't necessarily fault the writers from playing with the idea, which I suspect is not uncommon. I do fault them for this storyline being the weakest part of the show, but it does seem to be a fairly popular one with ABC Family's target audience. It seems to be a very common theme with ABCF to have a "forbidden" (therefore intense sexy supposedly) relationship in some way. I'm just glad that on this show they're pointing out that an adult seducing a 16 year old is statutory rape and that if that 16 year old is also high and/or drunk then its even worse.

Spoiler Discussion: The apple was poisoned?!

The clip was ok, I'm assuming (hoping) things will be a lot better when we have more than 1 minute of footage and its property quality etc. I think we're seeing the fact that Anna's actress is literally fresh out of drama school and maybe she'll get better as she gets more comfortable and experienced. I do give Snowing more of a pass there, because the literally had to do it to save her life when she was 2 minutes old. Elsa's parents obviously had their reasons and thought they were helping and protecting there daughters plural. But they had several years to come up with "accept and control" rather than "repress and be a recluse". -
The concensus seems to be that Meri was thinner at the start of the show because she dieted for it. I think the girls are mostly heavy because of what they eat, a lot of high fat, carbs and sugar processed crap. I think the Christine storming off was mostly so they had some quasi interesting footage, but seriously, a sisterwife discussing even the possibility of future children is off limits? Isn't that the kind of the point, what makes polygamy so much more interesting than monogamy with love being multiplied? How did they cope when they were all pregnant together, with the constant reminder that Kody was having sex with the otherwives the day after he had sex with them. Or is it because she won't have more kids now and it reminds her of that?
-
Or maybe he won't have a nice little wife and a nice little family until his late 20s or early 30s and will support the Kodettes on his own. Or maybe he'll have a big bossy strong wife who takes up all his time, money and attention personally ;) Seriously I do think its likely that the older kids might end up supporting their parents and youngers sibs when the gravy train ends, as is not entirely unusual but I do hope they get to live their own lives as well.

I really hope RC plays it with at guilt or at the very least some awkwardness with Henry after everything. But it is passed time they explored this relationship, I just don't want it to become a clone on Henry and Regina (and so the Charmings and Emma) became. Belle is enough of that. Anna looks good in the flesh and I like this pic of Elsa better than the 1st one. Storyline and how it affects characters to be involved remains a big wait and see but the visuals seem ok. I like the new poster. I'm fond of that shot of the town and whatever madness is going to be coming signposted on it. -
Robyn Brown: She wanted the family, but got stuck with the man.
Featherhat replied to Rhondinella's topic in Sister Wives
She certainly could have made better choices, most especially regarding her running up massive debts. However she was pretty young when she married the first time and obviously has some issues with losing her virginity before marriage (or without marriage), though I roll my eyes at the "stole" part unless further details emerge, and delaying babies doesn't seem to be anywhere on most mainline Mormons radar, let alone polygamous sects. As for her not divorcing earlier, yeah, well a lot of much stronger, independent women with live and jobs can have difficulty pulling that plug. I definitely agree she seems entitled and lazy, i'll never forget her thinking she should just pop her bills on a counter the magic bill paying fairy will take care of them. And her idea of a family "business" is one where she sets it up then whines that if they can't get a loan then she can't pay someone else to run it whilst she has a baby. There must be a limit to the number of women available in this community, although you'd think a family who've already declared bankruptcy so much would be wary of someone else with massive debt. They should have picked another Janelle type, someone who wants kids and a partner but who would also have a job outside the home with Christine helping take care of the kids. Browsing the internet there does seem to be a niche market for that even within the Mormon community. Kody was already shopping the show when getting to know Robyn, maybe he also figured better a thin 30 year old than a 22 year old to be less stereotypical of people images of polygamy and she was the one he knew at the time and she with Meri's help convinced him she's the one....fourth. -

I've read that interview or a similar one just like it. I totally get it, I like the idea, it just fell flat to me in execution, the way they blocked it out. I do think he's actually one character that OUAT can do just about anything to (besides total genuine woobification) and it will work because he is supposed to be a sociopath and mimic what those around him want/need to get what he wants. The new promo pic is ok, but I'm really gonna have to see some footage of all of them to see how its shaping up. -

Featherhat replied to regularlyleaded's topic in Once Upon A Time
Didn't that just turn out to be Kristen at E! pulling a story out of her ass? And what they actually said was no plans (so far). Unless it does really well in the ratings I can see them proceeding with more caution than Wonderland *because* it is the current hottest property for Disney (excluding Marvel and Star Wars). -
Well she and her husband were supposedly looking to add wives but were never stable enough to even consider it. From her POV, she was a broke single mother living in a trailer with debts up to her eye balls and few prospects. She meets Meri/Kody and moves into a decent rental, gets her debt absorbed into the family debt, gets to be the main storyline in a reality TV show (with "all" the fame and cash), gets to put the bills on the table and ask who's paying for them, gets to be the new younger, thin "pretty" wife who gets the most attention but doesn't necessarily have to deal with Kody's narcissism on a regular basis (and gets to blind him to her less attractive qualities for a long time was well) and a built in family. I think she seriously did desperately want to be the cherry on top of a perfect ready made family unit full of "sisters" and built in helpers, baby sitters etc, similar in a way to Christine's wish to be no 3. I don't think its worked out the way she hoped on a lot of it, but its probably better than where she might be now if she and Kody hadn't got married. I imagine that if a guy in this community is an introvert and can't stomach the thought of multiple (or even 1) wives then he simply makes it known he's not called for it. Some sects might give him a harder time than others but it means one less guy competing for at least 3 wives so I imagine sometimes its a relief when its clear someone can't/won't handle it.

Back when I was a Meredith/Derek (and Alex) fan I'd have vehermently disagreed with you. After they got back together they were relegated to mostly 1 minute plots whilst new relationships took up 20 mins, kind of like Snowing. I don't like it but it seems the way a lot of these shows work. Given their track record with Neverland and Oz it was never not going to be All Frozen all the time, that pattern was clear even before Wonderland failed, although they might have dialled it back somewhat if they had another outlet, I still think A and B season arcs with different characters all over the place were something they decided would keep the show "fresh" . And Frozen in particular I think they have several reasons for tying it to the mothershow first before even attempting a separate launch. -

Yeah it does and I really don't mind him as a villain and think as presented he's at the very best a creepy skeeze, I just think the transition was very ropey and not "smooth sociopathic asshole" which is more what he's supposed to be. I think its one of the weakest things about the movie, I'd have been ok if they'd just packed his random self off home after Anna fell for Kristoff because "falling in love" over one dance was silly and that's all there is to it. That's probably a twist too far for movies like this in general though. -
Spoiler Discussion: The apple was poisoned?!
Featherhat replied to regularlyleaded's topic in Once Upon A Time
Meh on Hans, I thought the whole "I'm actually a giant asshole" twist was lame, not that it happened, but how it did, I wasn't surprised to hear it wasn't planned from the beginning. Then he was carted home by his brothers. IF they want to give him "layers of gray" about it, it probably fits better than making Regina or Rumpel (or Maleficent in the recent movie) actually a giant woobie. I could see him being a Hook in S2 character, at the very least he can canonically charm people. No but its not unique to OUAT either. LOST did it a lot, Grey's still can't resist adding new characters every year although they have no story for many of the ones they already have, same with Revenge. It seems to be a hallmark of many hit ABC serial dramas. I suspect the Knave was decided before Frozen happened in such a huge way and will be Red/Belle-d. -
Usually I think they are at least theoretically supposed to all agree its time to bring in another wife. Meri is credited with pushing a reluctant (in the very beginning) Kody on Robyn, possibly because she wanted an ally in the family. They also all looked at other potential 4ths a couple of times before Robyn. That's one of the reasons Christine was so upset about the kissing and the wedding dress with Robyn/Kody before the wedding, it's against their courtship rules No kissing before marriage (and whilst she's giving birth to his daughter) and wives are supposed to choose the wedding dress together. Also Kody's supposed to get full approval of their church to make sure its all spiritual and he can support an extra wife etc. He's not supposed to be able to install a theoretical mail order bride no one has met and agreed to, although again in practice it might get tough to all disagree. I firmly believe that not all relationship have to be strict monogamy to be functional and workable. I'm not sure how often that happens in religiously mandated polygamy wife a dufus in charge, but even then I believe Christine when she says she wanted to be a 3rd wife (and last) although her reality might not live up to how she imagined it and I believe Janelle might have enjoyed working whilst having a sister wife to take care of all their kids together, although her relationship with Meri was poisonous.
-
Since she and her husband weren't married for very long before divorcing, probably not or at least not for very long at all. She might even have a .better relationship with Kody, even if it seems mostly friendship. I kind of get wanting to be the 3rd wife if you've been raised to be polygamous. 1st wife (usually) gets the legality but has to deal with being no1 and watching others come in and "steal" your husband emotionally, even if you've been expecting. Meri and Janelle show the dangers between two women starting to share a man. As she says no3 can potentially be a peacemaker or at least not as controversial. And there's more likelyhood of being the last (as she was for 16 years) since 3 is the minimum for your own planet.

So hilarious yet so poignant. The final episode rightly gets a lot of praise but all the final series leading up to that was brilliant, and very few of the most well acted, heart breaking dramas about WW1 recently come close to the poignancy of the poppy field after a legitimately hilarious comedy.

I only watched this season after watching the others and got a huge shock! I think the things I enjoy most about is the theme song and that is did indeed have a "fortelling" or reimagining of immediately pre Tudor England 30 years before "The King in The Car Park" etc, even though it too would have Richard apologists annoyed.

Is It Worth Holding Out Hope For Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Featherhat replied to Primetimer's topic in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The thing is even the less "connected" episodes of Buffy are still (usually) entertaining TV. The show famously had richer ground to explore than might have been guessed from the title, but even the early episodes before Joss was able to develop his themes fully, were entertaining. They were both more imaginatively written and better acted and IMHO simply more engaging than current AOS, and that's current AOS even with the big twist because the characters still aren't popping for me, despite the vastly better plot. At this point I think SG-1, one of my favourite "popcorn" action procedural shows had better early season "game changers" than AOS currently does and that limped on for 10 years. It's possible that apparently not constrained by Cap 2 anymore that they will be able to unleash AOS at full potential. But what about when Marvel tells them they have to keep ******** explosive Avengers 2 secret quiet but work it into the show afterwards? It's not like the Post Thor 2 episode was particularly interesting and there weren't a fraction of the embargoes as there were later. I think actual "state of the MCU after Thor 2 reviews were more interesting than what they managed to do with the generally charismatic Jaime Alexander. There's always going to be something as long as the movies are running and "but, but, but....!" only works so many times until it comes down to the showrunners of this actual show. -
OUAT vs. Other Fairy Tales: Compare & Contrast
Featherhat replied to Camera One's topic in Once Upon A Time
I personally haven't been able to make it through an entire season of Supernatural though I've tried several times over the years with different seasons. I think it has a lot of problems, although they are different problems than OUAT has. On slightly related note, I've started watching Grimm in the last couple of weeks. I'd never seen it before, even with the "OMG two fairy tale shows in one season - fight!" thing that briefly went on in the media in 2011. They're so different that they'd never have been compared if they hadn't premiered within 2 weeks of each other, though its pretty cool two shows both considered such risks using such difffernent interpretations of “fairytales in the modern world” conceit are/were both hits for their network/timeslot. However I have to say I'm up to 1.15 and its only ok for me. Part Supernatural part CSI, if it wasn't for Monroe and the evil captain I probably won't be sticking with it. I love the idea of using the original Grimm fairy tales and often prefer the "grounded in reality" versions of things but the CSI aspect of the show and Nick are pretty bland for me. I did like their version of Red Riding Hood though. -
That's sadly not uncommon. You'd be amazed at the number of (reasonably intelligent) people who know nothing about what they believe or why they do anything to do with their religion, its history, its doctrines, its symbolism. I think the Browns at least do (or at least did) have a much stronger link to their religion than they ever advertised. Before Vegas a lot of the places they lived were quite heavily AUB and the kids went to “plyg school” organised by their church. One of their (or the AUB itself) conditions for the show was that they didn’t talk much about religion, thereby giving the impression that they were almost randomly polygamist instead of part of a community that 3 of the wives were born in to. They might not have been able to argue doctrine much, but no worse than many people from more mainstream groups. The Richards OTOH do seem to be using the Bible as cover for Daddy Richards wanting to move a girlfriend in. Of course Kody’s teenage conversion (and his father’s late in life one) can be considered in much the same light.

Spoiler Discussion: The apple was poisoned?!
Featherhat replied to regularlyleaded's topic in Once Upon A Time
I think ABC/Disney are in "wait and see" mode regarding everything Frozen. If it hits as OUATS live action version there's going to be enormous pressure to wither spin them off or keep them around as part of the main cast. If after a couple of episodes the huge hype becomes a huge backlash and/or does nothing for the ratings then they'll probably leave well enough alone. Personally I'm not sure they'd be able to sustain a weekly Elsa-Anna-Kristoff series either live action or animated, especially if OUAT goes overboard in the same way they did with Neverland and Oz etc. The old cartoons they did of their 90s/early 2000 popular movies quite often flopped and/or were terrible brand expanders. That would actually be a breath of fresh air to the OUAT cannon. I mean OUAT has also done that TLK doesn't have to be romantic, but it has become both rather stale and lightweight in recent seasons. -
True. You might as well ask why any modern woman becomes a not so spectacular guy's mistress but, but they still do, and at the very least its all out in the open here. Also I do remember reading somewhere that there are more people like Robyn (and Janelle) - divorced women who become later wives than you might think in polygamous communities, maybe that was also in play here. I don't think either polygamy or poly in general would suit me in practice in the slightest, but there have been various times when I've thought in theory that a part time partner would be great compared to either no partner or a full time partner. I do think being open about wanting to sleep with other people is preferable to having a secret affair, but that the other partner should also get the opportunity to run screaming in the other direction and not brow beaten into it, which is what often seems to happen even within "polyamory". I wouldn't want to do it, both for practical, hygiene and emotional reasons, but I don't think its so much worse than having 4 separate houses because your wives who share your dick, your personality and your time can't bare to share a kitchen or even co-exist within the same 4 walls. Women who by their own admission hated seeing the evidence that their "husband" actually does so "romantic" stuff with the others on film. At least you'd get to see them every night.

Ratings and Scheduling: Who's the fairest of them all?
Featherhat replied to Serena's topic in Once Upon A Time
I think it might have done better in OUATs slot, (and as originally envisioned as a limited series not "we'll see what happens") . But I think there's a reason they threw it to the wolves as it were, in a timeslot ABC traditionally has a lot of trouble with, and it wasn't because they had a lot of confidence in it. -
A lot of religious ceremonies are centred around "commemorating" an event in some way, many from hundreds or thousands of years ago, the effects of which are still being felt in the world today. It's not necessarily a bad thing for anyone to remember the persecution of their ancestors or religious forebears. But I believe it also has to be put into context with the reality of life to day for every religion, good or bad. Something are going to have inherently more immediate/drastic meaning for the same groups in different parts of the world, as wrestlesfamingoes has said. For the purposes of remaining somewhat on topic Mormons were persecuted. Having read "Under the Banner of Heaven" etc I think its insanely complicated and doesn't look good for Joseph Smith under any definition but theoretically a lot of this happened within 100 years of many current LDS living today in Utah. Christine (and maybe Meri and Robyn) grew up hearing stories about how their immediate grandparents had been forced to flee to avoid being imprisoned and murdered for their beliefs (sometimes by different sects of their own religion) so I do semi get the paranoia after only 50 years. But this show is so scraping the dregs with this "different" poly family and they've never had an honest discussion about their actual basic and day to day religious beliefs so it all rings false for the show anyway.
