Supernatural Bitterness & Unpopular Opinions: You All Suck
FlickChick replied to mstaken's topic in Supernatural
Which is yet ANOTHER REASON why Dabb should NOT be a showrunner. How many do we have now??? -
I haven't read them all, but this is a site I believe someone here recommended. I've enjoyed the reviews I've read. Not necessarily snarky, but IMO critical and honest. http://thesnowleopard.net/thehistoricalmeow/2018/10/17/supernatural-season-14/

If we needed any further evidence of this very thing, look at the TV outlets' voting for Jared and JDM "best scenes" from our supposed "very special 300th" episode. One wouldn't even know Jensen was in the episode - and in some ways - he wasn't. The focus of the episode was clearly on Sam and John. And I agree with @ILoveReading, that Dean (and Jensen) is being given less and less to do in most episodes. Just like Crowley was...

I agree with some others here that the episode was certainly not as epic as one would hope for a special 300. Too much fluff for me, trying too hard to go for the "feels". Trust me when I tell you that I have cried - a number of times in this show - but not in this one. I felt that it was obvious from the title "Lebanon", to opening with what would be a normal "case" for the Winchesters, to the teens' drama, that this episode was originally intended to be a story about a local case and how the townsfolk view these guys. Then BOOM, a 180 degree turn into a story about Dean's wish to have his family all back together - dad included when JDM became available. That's probably why they have two writers for this episode. Obviously, Dabb was going to write the teen story for the 300th, because 1) that's his level of writing 2) have to compete with the teen story in the 200th 3) he's trying his damnedest to get teens into Supernatural come hell or high water - probably still hoping to get his spinoff. I've come to the conclusion that Dabb is not only a lousy showrunner, he's also a lousy writer. In short, I was offended by Sam's kill of Zach (pretty sure that was Dabb's idea) and also, as mentioned above, only Sam getting an apology from John about screwing up his life. As with so many other episodes, this one had such potential if only they used it in a way that mattered. It was nice to see JDM again, I just wanted more meat to the story. As always, Jensen brought his A game. Too bad that most of our writers don't seem to have an A game to bring. 😞

They chose poorly.

Chances are that it wouldn't play out that way. Instead, the writers would put Dean in the box and then give the story to Sam, Cas, Jack, Mary, Bobby et.al. to wring their hands over a solution. You know, give the other characters a chance to breathe.

Oh please, say it ain't so!!! I would gag on another replay of "Swan Song". Probably more than gag, I would more than likely delete the series from my DVR.

FYI, from TVLine: * In honor of Supernatural‘s 300th installment (airing Feb. 7 on The CW), TNT will broadcast a marathon of 25 fan-favorite episodes over Feb. 4 (from 10 am-3 pm), Feb. 5 (2 am-3 pm), Feb. 6 (10 am-5 pm) and Feb. 7 (10 am-2 pm).

Just because they got an early renewal doesn't mean we know the details. As in: how many episodes they film and IF it is a final season. We probably won't know that until the up-fronts in May.

I hope you're right about Jensen not allowing Dean's character being trashed in that manner if Dabb tried to do it. I'm not sure that Jensen has the authority to refuse to follow script in a main plot point and not just a line of dialog. And if they do succeed in showing Dean in that light, I'm with you there too. It's probably the end for me as well except to see if Jensen gets some good scenes.

I, too, agree that Pelligrino has range and is a good actor, but also agree that the writers should have gone with a different direction in his storyline. I think that many fans are really, really, tired of either Lucifer or Nickifer on their screen sucking up time for other potential storylines.
-
Alas, with this writing crew and showrunner, all we'll get is uninspired, regurgitated storylines AKA: second verse, same as the first. All we can hope for at this point is a halfway decent episode every now and then and some good acting from our stars.

Apparently our cast is billboard worthy! LOL

I agree about writers reading a fan's posts! Maybe some of them would learn something - especially the post you mentioned. I second and beyond a collaboration of Yockey/Thompson to finish out the series. I agree he probably won't be back - but I think he loved working on this show! PS: Does anyone know if Yockey will be writing another episode this season?

Fabulous post, @ILoveReading, everything you said and more is true. I personally believe that Jensen's talent rivals not only TV actors, but movie actors as well. I also firmly believe that if this show had ended in S5 as originally planned by Kripke, Jensen would have been in several projects by now. And it breaks my heart that he is fed mostly garbage by this current regime.

I thought I read something about Warner Bros. looking at starting their own streaming service. Just what everyone needs - another $$ account. If they do, they'll probably take their own shows off of other streaming services so they're available only with their account. Perhaps this is the beginning.
